Friends & newcomers alike -

The March walk is now up. We're continuing south in search of warm weather. In March we will aim to get to Sunset Beach, NC. You'll like it there. While there, if you have extra miles make sure you cross the bridge to the island and walk west on the board along the ocean (the island faces south to the Atlantic) to Bird Island a wildlife refuge. If you reach the very end of Bird Island you'll be in South Carolina. Pretty cool....

Hope to see everybody posting their mileage goal over on that thread soon.

Well, I won't be even close. It has been an unusual month. My oldest grandson (4-years-old) was hospitalized about a month ago with a rare kidney disease. They are trying to get it under control. My daughter has 2 younger sons and another on the way in June. I and the other grandma have been helping with the 2 younger plus getting up to see them (an hour away) plus work and other commitments. I am please I have been able to do as much as I have.

Well, I'm definitely not making it to New Bern this month, but I've decided that I'm okay with that. Other good things are happening - My sister and I are going to look at apartments this week, in Fredericksburg, VA, which is MUCH more walkable than where I've been living in MD. Good things are happening!

Thanks, everyone. My mom was doing much better by the time I got there, so I didn't stay long. The memorial service for one cousin (dad's side) was yesterday in the DC area, so they dropped me off in MD last night. It was one of those lovely family times for a not-so-great reason, and my cousin would have totally loved it. I'll probably be back up in PA around the end of this month or early March. The other cousin was living in Ecuador, so his sister and another of our cousins have been down there dealing with all the paperwork required to bring him home. There will probably be a couple of memorials for him - one In Charleston, SC for his kids, grandkids, and the community that he was part of there, and then probably one in WV, where he was born, with the extended family, later in the year. For now, time to get back to work and catch up!

Should get extra miles for Sunday, as I was walking in knee deep snow looking for our dog that ran away. Missed the first quarter of the Super Bowl, but the dog found his way home walking on top of the crust on the snow. Worried about the dog since DH saw lots of coyote tracks in the field behind our house and we have been hearing the coyotes for the past week or so.

Just 49.36 miles to go!

Well, my last few days have been nuts. Sunday afternoon I found out that one of my first cousins (mom's side) had passed away in his sleep Saturday night. Monday morning I found out that one of my first cousins (dad's side) had passed away Friday evening. So, I got the fun job of calling my 88 yr old mom and telling her that one of her nephews AND one of her nieces had died. So, I got work out of the way today and tomorrow I'm headed to PA to be with my mom. As usual, I have no idea when I'll be back in MD. Will walk as much as I can we'll just see how it goes.

I'll do 84 miles - Windsor, NC to New Bern, NC + 4 miles wandering around when I get there.
That’s 77 miles (to keep up with my 2.75 miles/day goal), plus 11 miles left over from last month.

Hmmm... magic bus, huh? Is this anything like the magic transport we used a couple of years ago that looked suspiciously like a porta-potty?

Since its a short month, I'm going to go with 54 miles - Belhaven, NC to New Bern. Well, that and I love the idea of taking the ferry. If it looks as though I'm going to beat that I can always call the magic bus back and switch routes, right?

February's walk starts in the Great Dismal swamp with a destination of New Bern, NC. In fact, our walk ends here, at Tryon Palace. Tryon Palace is where the colonial governor of NC lived. This isn't the original dwelling, but a reconstruction. Here's a picture.

Those who can walk 142 miles will get to go the whole way by means of their own feet - by walking, or jogging or elliptical trainer. Those who choose a shorter goal will be picked up by an imaginary bus early on the morning of February 1st and driven to their starting point. It's kind of like the magical school bus, but completely different!
