Joan, I'm loving our March destination! I have little interest in travelling internationally. I guess its no surprise that everywhere I want to go has to do with architecture or archaeology? (my yen for the ancestral homeland has so far confined itself to the Shenandoah Valley and the neighborhood in Philly where my dad, and his parents, were born)

Bet you're wondering where we are walking in March. So the discussion over the last couple of days have involved the Ides of March and Julius Caesar. There was a suggestion of walking to Rome, but I think we've done that. I'd have to check the archives, but I'm pretty sure we have.

So, one of Julius Caesar's claims to fame was his military successes in Gaul. You can think of Gaul as more or less modern day France. That got me to thinking about the Normandy and Brittany areas I guess for two reasons. First, almost every Sunday I count the offering with the church treasurer and this most recent Sunday I got a call that he couldn't be there as his father-in-law had died the night before. I told the preacher that morning and the preacher had been visiting with this gentleman a few days earlier and told me a couple of things about him. One of them was about his service in World War II. So that put France and Normandy on my mind. The second thing is that I've always been fascinated by a place called Mont Saint-Michel, which you can read about here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Saint-Mic

It's an interesting tidal area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

So since Julius Caesar was a Roman who "conquered" France, and since that made me think about what I wrote above, we'll we walking to Mont Saint-Michel. I'll be working on setting up the thread, which should be up before I go to bed tonight!

There's a town named March on the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England (yes, islands can be problems as far as mileage), there's a Mars, Pennsylvania, a Mars Hill, NC, a Mars Hill, Maine, and apparently also a Mars in the Ukraine. This morning Fort Lawton, a historic army fort here in Seattle (opened in 1900) was officially decommissioned. The fort is just a couple of miles from where I live. so a couple of friends and I went over. It originally consisted of over 700 acres. In the 1950s the army surplussed over 500 acres and gave them back to the City of Seattle. Those acres are mostly city park, which gave us an army base within a city park. Oh, and original portions of the fort are a historic district and there's a military cemetery too so this is an amazing place and it has huge significance in Seattle history.

Friday was a rest day. Two walks today. Very windy here today. I walked around the lake this morning--paved trail--with my usual Saturday morning walking buddy. The lake & trail are on my way to the library so on the way there this afternoon I stopped and walked around again. Because of all the rain we've had and then the gusty winds found two LARGE trees blocking the trail this afternoon. They'd fallen sometime between when we passed that spot about 8:20 this morning and when I was walking by around 1:30. From the looks of it, they just simply laid down. Wow. One pine and one probably either a maple or poplar.

Well, it was a rough week. In addition to the sinus infection I had a "mild" migraine (is there such a thing?) and was achy and ran a low grade fever one day. Some kind of 24 to 48 hour virus? Who knows. Sigh... I went walking late this morning, but with a decided lack of speed. Not feeling 100% yet, but better.
