Maybe we can do Ontario in September and NC in October.
Since I live in NC, I can find something in the mountains easily. And in October, our leaves are at their best. It's still too hot in September for pretty leaves in the NC mountains.

Ontario is right next door (Michigan). I've been there several times. It's a lot like Michigan so I would feel right at home. I also love the mountains of NC. That's a beautiful state! Have always wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail.

I've been working on tracking some family history. My dad spent part of his childhood in Oshawa, Ontario, something I know happened but don't really know anything about - I'm trying to figure out how many members of the family were there and how many of them moved back to the states about the time my dad started high school. Anyway, doesn't have to be Oshawa but Ontario would be good!

Any ideas for a destination for September???

I'll choose something tonight no matter what, but I do like suggestions. I am reading a book set in North Carolina, Ontario and Scotland, so it might be one of those three locations if I don't hear back.

I'm back!

We got to Florida to help with my father-in-law on Sat. the 21st. We were just in time to be some major help. He died on Tuesday the 24th and we took off the next day with my mother-in-law toward home and then immediately to the northern edge of Indiana to prepare for the Funeral which was yesterday.

Congratulations RLPARKER! You made it.

I did a treadmill run today and I'm now at 80.6 miles. I'm just seeing the sights here on Dartmoor. Very pretty.

Where shall we walk in September?? Any ideas. Today is August 30th, so I'll have to create the walk thread tomorrow.

Spent the weekend up in the NC mountains. Lots of interesting there this weekend. On Saturday morning, I ended up volunteering at a trail race. (I've perfected the art of pointing to the right. :-) I'll post the link if I can find it. It was a 10K through our church camp - I think the name was Continental Divide Trail Race. I tell people that to drive to the camp, you leave North Wilkesboro, NC on 18 and stay on 18 until you cross the Eastern Continental Divide. Then you take the 1st left. There were just over 100 men in their event and around 40 in the women's event. The oldest runners were between 75 and 80. We ran into them in the afternoon in a nearby town and they had nice things to say about the race. This is the link -

On Saturday night we went off to see a friend act in a play at the local little theater. The play was Don't Cry for Me Margaret Mitchell. It's about re-writing the script to Gone with the Wind. We laughed so hard I thought I would be ill. Eyes were watering.

Also walked quite a bit around camp.

I'm at 77 miles.

I actually agreed to be available for calculus tutoring for this semester while this young'un takes his AP calculus course. I realized how much fun I was having re-acquainting myself with math and spending time with a young person who really is interested in it. I think he'll actually do fine without me, so perhaps this won't be a huge time commitment. We did spend some time talking about what he has to bring to our bargain. Basically, I will need to study a bit so that I can recall what I taught over 25 years ago! So he will have to keep me informed of what they are doing in class so that I can be prepared when we meet. Should be an interesting time.

Didn't do anything on Tuesday - it's a very challenging day at work and I had to meet with my student.

I'm proud of you Ann. Isn't it interesting how you plan on going out for a short walk and it ends up being a long walk? There's just something about being in motion and having good company, like the company on this team.

No cardio for me today. Church in the morning, then lunch, then chores, and then 90 minutes doing some algebra - helping a rising junior with his summer math worksheet in preparation for his AP Calculus class. I've forgotten a lot - used to teach when I was in grad school in mathematics - but remembered a lot as well. Thank goodness I still have a collection of calculus text books and one college algebra book. Now have to decide whether I want to tutor this young man for the duration of the class. It'll mean I have to study!

Well, I was just planning on an easy day - around a local lake with my Seattle team, which is less than 3 miles. As so often happens, I ended up with some extra walking before and more after... LOL! It ended up just being one of the other leaders and me and a friend of hers, but we're close and it was a great chance for us to catch up!

You should both be proud! I didn't really do anything today. Saturday is often the only day that I get a little bit of work - just a couple of hours, but its something. Since I walk just about everywhere, not doing anything still amounts to more than 2.5 miles, and that's with taking the bus most of the way home because I had heavy groceries. I'm definitely proud of that!

A lovely 4 more walk today in the heat of the afternoon, though it's only a cool 87 out.

You know, I think I've lost count of who posted prouds for Thursday. I think maybe I will review this on Saturday when I'm wider awake.

I figure Kevin gets some excused absences.

Ann - I see you've been posting. Quick! Edit your earlier posts and include some "prouds" for Thursday & today.

Only one day to go in this little challenge.

So I have this young friend who recently finished college -- it took a summer school session and close attention to his physics class to do this. Anyway his degree is in Construction Management. The economy being what it is, he and his parents were wondering if he could land a job. I happen to know a home renovation type builder - the one who did some work on my house - and so gave the young man's resume to the builder and lo and behold, my young friend got an offer. And he got a second offer. And then he was torn about what to do.

So...I'm proud of my young friend for his follow-up in making sure he told my friend the builder and me why he took the 2nd offer. I'm proud of the thought he put into his decision making. I thought he handled himself really well, and left everyone with a good feeling about him. I'm also proud that he wasn't too proud to do the networking thing to try to find a job.

Oh, and I'm proud of myself for ordering the salmon and steamed vegetables at the Outback tonight when we went out to celebrate good friends' 33rd wedding anniversary.

Got up this morning to go for a run, and there is a thunderstorm with pouring rain, so maybe tonight.

But I had to post that I am proud of my oldest Son today. It's his Birthday and he is 32, and works long hard hours as a welder, plus is in the Army Reserves and is a very good father of 2 cute boys. If you saw the hellion he was years ago, he's come a long ways!!

What a great bunch of folks!

I have to say I'm proud of this team in general. I think we have lots of folks walking to various interesting places and I know that it really charges some folks up as they reach their Spark goals. I'm also pleased, happy, thrilled that all of you walking to Dartmoor this month are my good Spark Friends.

Jan - hang in there. I'm thinking of you. You've got a lot on your shoulders. Kevin & Ann - You two are in my mind a lot as I think good thoughts about y'all finding employment and I hope soon.

Everybody else on this walk - please join in and tell us something you're proud of today and through the rest of the week. I think this does at least two good things - gives you an opportunity to reflect on something good, which I hope raises your spirits, AND helps to get to know others on the team. The thing I like most about Spark is the connectedness I feel like I have with folks here. And part of that just comes from getting to know each other a little bit better.

Jan, you and your mom have taken on a lot of caretaking.

Well, I'd have been perfectly happy to have spent the whole day on the couch today, but I got myself up off my butt this afternoon and did C25K W6D2 (couch to 5k, week 6, day 2). I've been surprised at how consistent I've been, and I've been able to keep it up without having to repeat anything, yet. It feels as though I could not possibly be running (jogging) more slowly and still make any forward progress at all, but I'm doing it!

Sorry for not posting yesterday--crazy busy at work lately and been helping take care of family. Have been taking care of my oldest grandson every day this week because my DIL has been in & out of the hospital and his Dad has been working mandatory 10 hour days. Glad I could help them out. And my Mom needs to go out of town for a meeting in Southern Utah at Bryce Canyon, so I will be the care taker for my Dad (who does not drive and has dementia) tonight. I'm just glad that my Mom can get away for awhile, even if it is only one night and a long drive involved. I'm proud of her for not breaking down while being the main care giver for my Dad and her Mom, my 99 1/2 year old Grandma.

Way to go Joan! Yes, Kevin, it would be great if your wife would join us. I just got home from tonight's Storm game. Our girls came from way behind to pull off a win... another great game in a fantastic season. My brother-in-law and a good friend of ours came to tonight's game with us. He had a horrible day - arrived at his shop this morning to find that it'd been broken into and most of the hand tools his employees need to do their jobs are gone- but he showed up and had a good time and got to talk about it. (and I was happy to have an opportunity to think about someone else's problems) I'm proud of our Storm team, but really proud of my family. My sibs (which for me includes both brothers-in-law) and I are close and really there for each other.

Hey Kevin, I think it would be marvelous if your wife joined us in September. The more, the merrier.

I had to run to the grocery store this evening and I stuck to the list. I'm trying to be more diligent about making good decisions and so am proud that I did not give into any bad decisions.

This morning about 6 am when it was light enough to go outside it was warm, about 74* and windy and I hate, hate, hate walking or running in the wind as it just clogs up the sinus' and makes me miserable. I got out the dog's leash and took him for a walk despite the wind and it turned out pretty nice and I didn't get as clogged as usual. So I'm proud of myself for not skipping a workout because the wind was blowing.

After much fussing with the camera, today I managed to take a picture of myself for a blog entry I'll write after dinner. I won't say I like the picture I'm keeping, but I can live with it... LOL!

Kevin, I'm a fan of Allis-Chalmers. I did a lot of work on documentation of(and appeared in a documentary about)a hydroelectric plant near here that's been using the same Allis-Chalmers turbines since 1898.

Well, it's supposed to be even cooler here today. I guess we'll have to see if that comes to pass. Met a friend at a local lake this morning for our traditional walk. We thought it felt pretty good out, but about a mile in we realized that it was plenty humid. Saw a gorgeous gray heron. Solved the problems of the universe also during our walk. emoticon Just an easy 2 mile stroll. Housework looms in my future.

Our heat index was just past 110 degrees at 1:00pm. It was only 93 heat index when we were finishing our walk.
