Great choice, Joan! Glacier NP is losing its glaciers, so we should visit before they're all gone!

Hmmm... Olympic is in a rainforest, so it is incredibly lush and green. North Cascades is much more of the majestic mountain view sort of park. Glacier is losing its glaciers, so perhaps we need to go there before they are all gone. Theodore Roosevelt is special to me simply because I love all things Roosevelt (have read extensively on both presidents and a few other members of the family, since the Progressive Era and the New Deal are my favorite eras). I'm trying to remember whether there are enough trails at Isle Royale to keep us busy, though everything I know of it comes from Nevada Barr books (for anyone who likes mysteries and National Parks, I recommend her books). Acadia is a different sort of rugged coastal park.

I lean toward Acadia, but I'd be amenable to any of these. I think we're more likely to end up walking to them than in them - looks like it'd be hard to map the mileage on the park trails. There are some really cute little towns along 20 between Mount Vernon (where we went for the tulips this spring) and North Cascades. Concrete is one of my favorite places! I'd say the same of Olympic. Forks is where the Twilight books take place. Sequim (pronounced Squim - don't ask me why!) is a popular place for seniors to move because it doesn't get any extreme weather. Port Townsend is great and so is Port Angeles.

Looking across states that have a border with Canada here are some options.

North Cascades - Washington
Olympic - Washington
Glacier - Montana
Theodore Roosevelt - North Dakota
Isle Royale - Michigan
Acadia - Maine

There are some National Monuments and Historic sites in other states bordering Canada. These are presumably a bit cooler in summer, possibly in places with higher elevations.

Anything jump out at y'all?

Something patriotic? Philly, DC, or something like that? There are, of course, many other possible locations... Or we could head for a National Park, but somewhere that's not too hot this time of year? It is also prime vacation season after all.

I'm in Hafnir, wandering around looking for a nice outdoor cafe for a glass of wine or an espresso. From the satellite image in google maps I don't think I'm going to find anything. Good thing I brought my camp stove & coffee!

Ann--Congratulation on finishing the marathon!! Isn't it wonderful just to know that you can do it! Let us know when you post your blog.

Joan--stay inside today and keep cool! We are suppose to get in the high 90's today, but we don't have the humidity, which makes a big difference.

Ouch!Joan, that definitely sounds like a good day to stay inside! When I finally get around to doing my blog on the race (slept about 12 hours after the race and just got up from a nap) I'm including a picture just for you, so you'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Ann - congratulations on finishing that marathon. That's quite an accomplishment. I'd go out and walk in celebration of your accomplishment, but according to my car on my ride home from church the temperature was anywhere between 99 and 103. Officially it's only 99 at the airport. Heat index is 103. Yes, we have humidity in North Carolina.

I have to update on all my whining and complaining about the weather in my area. I looked back on my posts, and just 2 weeks ago it was in the 40's and 50's. Today the high will be 94* and it feels soooo nice!! The warm weather is so nice--maybe I'm part lizard! Anyway, that's how crazy this spring/early summer has been.

The taper is ALL good Ann. You've built up the endurance, and you need to rest your legs.

Thanks Jan! The taper is making me antsy, so I'm glad that I'm headed to the expo this afternoon and starting to gather my stuff for my gear bag. Just read your blog entry about the relay - so cool!

Owl, I hope we get to see a video of your handbell parade. Try shifting around a lot with the standing and don't lock your knees - but you knew that.

Yes, I have been really absent this month! emoticon My knee is feeling better each day, but still has a ways to go. The weather is rainy and/or humid this week, so I am not biking or walking. Probably good for my knee. Not so good for my mileage. I am off to handbell camp tomorrow and will not be back until Sunday evening. I might walk a couple of easy miles (handbells in a parade!) and a little biking. Lots and lots of standing, which will be challenging.

Joan, you didn't miss it - its Saturday. I finished the temp job today and am ready for a rest! I know I walked a lot around the sale while working and got some other fitness in while toting boxes... but haven't logged anything because how would I measure? I'll do a last few miles over the next couple of days, and then Saturday....

Welcome back Jaydee.

Jan - how did your relay go?

Ann - I've lost track about your marathon? Did it happen and I missed it? I know I saw some long training walks on your posts.

Carleen - how's the knee?

Looks like a quiet weekend over here in this group. I've been out of town - in the NC mountains at our church camp. Went up to see my friends who run the place and did lots of walking up and down the mountain. The first session of summer camp starts next week. Lots of final preparations were underway. It was a good weekend.

Its just a few days, working a warehouse sale for Title Nine Sports (a women's sportswear company based on this end of the country). Every little bit helps, though!

Jan, you are allowed to complain about the weather, since as you've so admirably shown, you didn't let it get in the way of getting your miles in. emoticon

Very interested in hearing about this relay when it's over. You've been training hard, so I hope you meet whatever goal you've set for yourself.

It was in the mid 90s here today, with lots of humidity. I left work at 5:15 and managed to get a walk/run in before the thunderstorms started. Yes!

Sorry for all my complaining about the weather and thanks for listening. Things are looking up with only a slight chance of rain for tomorrow and into the 80's for the weekend. The relay will be run at some pretty high elevations, so it might be more in the 70's, but I better remember sun-screen! I am so nervous, and a bit excited!

Wow, Jan, awful weather. Having lived through Hurricane Fran (1996) and listened to trees come down around my house as I sat huddled in the closet below a staircase, I can sympathize.

Saturday was a horrible weather day! We had rain & winds up to 80 mph and lots of tree damage. Yesterday, there was rain, but the winds had calmed. This morning the weather has finally gotten better and I was able to get in a good run. It was so nice!! Of course, there is rain in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, but so far it is looking like my prayers will be answered and the weekend will be nice for the relay.

Jan - I'm not spending the whole weekend cleaning. I did do enough on Friday afternoon to allow me to go into the kitchen and not cringe. And I went to a surprise party for somebody's 50th birthday on Friday night. That was fun.

This morning - a run, and then met my usual Saturday walking buddy for a walk around the same route. Wasted time at the Caribou Coffee with the usual crowd. Bought a bathroom exhaust fan to replace what's in there now, some paint samples so I can paint the walls in the upstairs bathroom with the two colors I'm considering at the moment. The builder delivered my new dishwasher and a grill for outside. (Such a nice builder and one of the 'regulars' at the Caribou.) So I'll be able to grill out some time soon. Not today, though.

Hot hot and hot here - 95* and we haven't had rain a couple of weeks. Guess it's because it's raining in Seattle and Utah??

Jan, I know just what you mean. We had rain here early this morning and showers predicted for much of the morning, so I figured I was going to get wet. However, I lucked out. Hope you get a good day, too!

Sorry to hear about your knee acting up again, Owl. Give it the rest it needs.

Joan: Your vacation sound so fun! Now don't spend the whole weekend cleaning your house to make up for the time away!!

I'm just not getting in the mileage I would like because of the weather. With Utah being the 2nd driest state in the US, you would think it wouldn't rain so much, but it has rained everyday this month and set a record for the coldest June. And right now it is pouring, again and about 50*. This morning it was 46* and threatening rain, so I finally gave up and got on the treadmill. I have my last long run scheduled for tomorrow and I am NOT going to run it on the treadmill. I'm praying for a break in the storm just long enough to get the run in. Sorry for the rant!! Looking for:

Back from the beach yesterday. The house is awesome in places and a disaster in others. Two rooms painted and the downstairs bathroom almost completely functional again. Nobody working this morning. They'll be back after lunch.

Walked a long walk this morning - not as long as Ann's, but long enough.

Owl, sorry about the knee. I bet handbell camp will be fun though.

We went on an easy hike this morning through a salt marsh tucked into the northeast corner of South Carolina - Vereen Memorial Gardens. Very interesting and VERY mosquito infested. The Deep Woods Off worked though. Nephew said I was mosquito infested at one point, so we grabbed the off and sprayed all exposed skin and no problems after that.

Saw Shrek, bought lights for my two bathroom renovations, walked out onto the fishing pier. Another nice day. We'll do the morning at the beach tomorrow and get a last bit of wave jumping in, and then it's back home.

I have been thinking about a vacation, too, VB. The ocean sounds nice (and the seafood!) But being that I am in the Midwest, the ocean makes for a longer trip.

So I will have to settle for handbell camp in a couple of week. It is actually called a Handbell Festival, but three days of playing handbells and learning about them sounds like "camp" to me. Me, my son, and my sister, along with some of her handbell buddies. It will be nice to be away for a couple of days.

Last night, my knee hurt enough to wake me from sleep, so I have decided that I am going to stop walking for exercise for a couple of weeks. I will be using the elliptical once or twice a week to keep my insurance company happy, and I will be continuing with yoga and biking (which somehow does not bother my knee as much). If I don't see improvement with the cessation of walking and increasing of knee exercises, the doctor will be seeing me again.

So I have lowered my walking goal emoticon .

I'm going to try 67 miles - Melar, Iceland to Hafnir, Iceland, since I'm starting a little late and haven't been able to exercise as much recently.

6/8 - 67 miles - 3 miles = 64
6/9 - 64 - 1.5 = 62.5
6/10 - 62.5 - .5 = 62
6/11 - 62 - 1 = 61
6/12 - 61 - 1 = 60
6/13 - 60 - .5 = 59.5
6/14 - 59.5 - 1 = 58.5
6/15 - 58.5 - .5 = 58
6/16 - 58 - 1 = 57
6/17 - 57 - 1 = 56
6/18 - 56 - 4 = 52
6/19 - 52 - .5 = 51.5
6/20 - 51.5 - .5 = 51
6/21 - 51 - 1 = 50
6/22 - 50 - .5 = 49.5
6/23 - 49.5 - .5 = 49
6/24 - 49 - 1.5 = 47.5
6/25 - 47.5 - 1 = 46.5
6/26 - 46.5 - .5 = 46
6/27 - 46 - .5 = 45.5
6/28 - 45.5 - 1 = 44.5
6/29 - 44.5 - 1 = 43.5
6/30 - 43.5 - 2 = 41.5

Well, I didn't make it, but I will try a more realistic goal for July!

Back from the ocean. Here in southern North Carolina, the water temperature is probably in the upper 70s or low 80s. The humidity in the air is awful, so the water is very refreshing.

Seafood tonight, Owlwho, probably steamed mussels.

Ah the life of ease! Must not think of where I would be at this time next week, for it ain't pretty. (But they do pay me to be there....sigh...)

Up early for a run with my sister. My sister was never ever one of the family athletes, but she took up running in college and she can go. Keeping up is a challenge. Her son, my favorite nephew, is slow like his Aunt Joan. But he slept in. Pre-teens need lots of sleep especially when they don't turn their lights out! About to do sunblock and head to the ocean for the afternoon.

Ran with my sister this morning 3.2 miles.

More when I get to the beach - more posting, not sure about another run today. Probably not on the latter.

Congratulations Ann on getting your very long walk done for your training.

I got up and walked this morning - 3.2 miles. At some point I need to do the running total, but not now.

Jan, I was incredibly slow! We got our corral assignments and I'm in 29 (there were 36 last year and there are more participants this year), so I've got a little bit of a cushion. (I have to finish within 7 hrs of when the last corral starts) Still, I need to be faster. The good news is, I don't need to do this many miles again until the race, so I'll be concentrating on speed for the next couple of weeks. That is, after today, because I'm still pretty sore... doing just enough today to get the kinks out, very slowly.

A friend sent me some amazing pictures of the Iceland Volcano, but I can't get the link to cooperate. The Volcano is called Eyjafjallajokull. Say that fast 3 times--or even say it once!

Hi

I'm new to this team so am going to start with the middle of the road 80 miles - Langarfoss, Iceland to Hafnir, Iceland

It looks like a nice walk along the coast so I will look for some beautiful pictures to share along the way.

I enjoy walking but don't always get out there and do it consistently, a good challenge like this should help.

I'm going for 116 miles - Hjardharfell, Iceland to Hafnir, Iceland. I have my second 20 mile day this week, then its 12, 10, and the marathon on the 26th... so just my high mileage days will take a good chunk out of that!

We're hiking in Iceland in June. I think it's so we can be closer to the volcano. I have to admit I have done zero research to figure out exactly where this volcano is. In any case, Iceland is a change from our tropical walk in Tahiti in May.

So, how does this work?
- Pick a distance from the list below.
- Post to this thread and tell us what walk you're signing up for.
- Walk, run, elliptical - just get moving - every day and work towards achieving your goal.
- Post your daily mileage here. If you like you might also consider posting some pictures of the sights you've seen in Iceland. Google maps has a "More" button in the map area where you turn check Photos to see pictures that people have posted near your location.
