Just finishing up my May Tahiti and biking stats:

Seems like I lose interest in logging miles daily once I have hit the goal. I did cover 7.2 more miles.

That's 89 and change for the month! Hurrah!

emoticon

I am home from the beach. I arrived around 12:30 or so to find that my contractor and one of his guys had put my kitchen back together. Actually I found them here in the kitchen and so ran a few more ideas of how to spend money past my contractor. Silly me. However, now I don't have a stove in the garage and a refrigerator in the living room. That's a vast improvement. I am standing on my new oak floor in my unfurnished kitchen & family room combination at the kitchen island typing this. I spent part of the afternoon dealing with dust and clutter.

I'll be setting the Iceland walk up before I go to bed. Right now, I think I need to clean up from my walk/run. I could hear thunder far off in the distance so my walk included occasional jogs.

See y'all in Iceland soon.

I am trying for another 100 miles or so in June, so if there is a walk that far, that would be great!!

I'm fine with going to Iceland again. I'm hopeful that we can get some long walks together without having to use the transporter. Ann & Jan - are you looking for a more than 100 mile walk for June?

Jan - I hope you don't have to use the emergency exit. Clean up is complicated what with all kinds of special procedures required.

Hey Team - We need a destination for June. Today is the 28th. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joan

Joan--thanks for ordering the transporter and the user advice. Those emergency escape hatches are a bit messy, but might be worth it!! Will be using it tonight or tomorrow depending on how much house cleaning I can finish tonight for the weekend company.

Owl--have fun camping. Sounds like a fun bike ride to see Shrek and you should get in plenty of mileage.

I am so jealous. I wish I was walking far enough to need the transporter. Here is my progress so far:

Walking goal: 49 miles
35.95 walked so far, 73% complete, 13.05 miles to go
Biking goal: 150 miles
100.95 biked so far, 67% complete, 49.05 miles to go

My DH and DS are camping this weekend and planning a bike ride up the Paul Bunyan trail to a movie theater to see Shrek. Oddly enough, we saw the other three while on camping weekends, so we thought we would continue the tradition. Round trip: 50 miles. We did a leisurely stroll one year to see Shrek and ended up walking 13 miles. Brutal!

Jan - I'm not certain that the transporter actually has an emergency exit. Maybe you should just wedge the door closed from the inside to make sure you have a way out.

I've submitted the paperwork and the transporter should be there by the 27th. Good luck! emoticon

Had to go to the start of our walk to check to see if I was ready for the transporter. About 6 miles to go, and it is transporter time. Probably won't make it thru the whole walk, but I don't want to get stuck in the transporter!!

I'm against snow in May. Yuck.

Well the deconstruction on my house has begun. Came home to find the refrigerator in the living room and the stove in the garage. Thank goodness that Spark People got me cooking in batches and freezing things. I had soup for supper from my stash.

Walked when I got home.

Jan, I know what you mean. When you're ready for the weather to at least be decent and to be able to get outside, you just are. Of course, I figured out this winter that walking outside, even in the rain, improved my mood more than working out in the gym... but 30s and rain is vastly different from trying to get out there in SNOW in MAY!

I have been refusing to get on the treadmill, wanting so much to walk or run outside, but finally gave up and got in 2 miles last night on the treadmill. So tired of rain & cold--it even snowed yesterday, even though it didn't stay around. The next couple of days are going to be nice, so maybe I better get in 2 runs a days to make up for lost mileage!

It's easy to find an outhouse calendar, Jan (and thank you for appreciating my weird sense of humor.) I found several at Amazon. Just go to the Books area and search for Outhouse calendar.

There's a lovely multi-seat outhouse in the Hensley Settlement at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. I hiked up to the settlement a long while back -- early 1980s - and was gratified to find the still functional and lovely outhouse behind the school house. Looking at the Cumberland Gap web site, I see there are now guided tours to Hensley Settlement. Back in the early 80s, I think you had to make your own way there. We certainly could not have afforded to pay any fee back then for a guided tour-- poor graduate students that we were! If you're ever in that area of Kentucky, I recommend a visit there and not just for the outhouse!

Love the outhouse talk. I expect that I will be using one this coming weekend while camping (and biking!). Wish my knee would let me use the transporter beam and its amenties, but it is acting up again this week, so progress is slow.

Walking goal: 49 miles
29.5 miles walked so far, 60% done, 27 miles to go
Biking goal: 150 miles
86.55 miles biked so far, 58% done, 63.45 miles to go

It does not appear that I will be reaching either goal this month, emoticon but I am still plugging away. emoticon

Spent the weekend doing the clearing out I need to do in anticipation of the work beginning in my house on Tuesday morning. They're tearing out ancient carpeting and vinyl. Can't wait to see what is discovered. Big sigh in anticipation.

The weather was one thunderstorm after another, so I did not do any cardio outside.

Elliptical today.

Ann--congratulations on the 20 miler and sucessfully going thru the transporter! I'm sure getting the 20 miles in was more of a relief!!

Got in a 6 mile timed training run with my relay team, despite rain, mud, windy and around 45*. I'm the slow, old lady but they are still keeping me around, which I'm not sure is good news or bad news.

I successfully navigated the transporter unit! My first 20 mile day... well, you can imagine. I've been in the bath and am working my way toward fixing dinner and putting my feet up, poor things! The good news is that I completed the 20 within my target time. I still need to speed up a bit to finish the full 26.2 within 7 hours, but I'm close! However, for today I'm toast...

Joan--if you ever come across an outhouse calander again, let me know. That would look great in my office!! And I know so many people I could give it to for presents!

Ann--I agree that the Porta Potty are so much better than park restrooms. At least you know sometime that porta potty was cleaned! A couple of summers ago we came upon a homeless guy sleeping on the floor of a park restroom, and I'm really scared now to use one in certain locations.

We have a rather strange sense of humor in our family, so no worries. One year hunting, my DH got a swan and we cut off the foot & wrapped the end of the leg in preservative & sent it to my BIL at an Air Force base in Japan. His Japanese co-workers wouldn't touch it and thought it was bad luck. The same BIL sent an wisdom tooth that he had pulled & put on a necklace to his sister in Idaho as a jewelry/birthday present. These are the same people who would appreciate an outhouse calander as a present!

I am the last person to comment on anyone else's sense of humor or interests, as I hang out in cemeteries on a pretty regular basis and sent my sister a huge stuffed fabric uterus (your really can buy anything on the internet)after her hysterectomy last fall. A friend of mine used to live on a farm that still had an outhouse (in addition to the indoor plumbing, not instead of) - but it was a very fancy double occupancy model. I did a lot of races last year, which I unfortunately can't afford this year, so I've become quite used to porta potties and prefer them to some of the park restrooms I've used. (I guess walking long distances is turning me into a bathroom connoisseur)

Jan, Ann, people worry about my sense of humor quite a bit around here at work.

I always buy my calendars for the year when they are half price. One year I waited a bit too long and the selection was pretty poor at the local Barnes & Noble. So I was forced to buy a calendar with pictures of outhouses. There really are some charming ones and some charming settings for outhouses. Guess it may be an acquired taste though.
emoticon

The calendar was prominently displayed in my office and the next year the pictures were displayed as "artwork" in my office.

I got a lot of eye rolling from drop-ins.

I detect a certain reluctance on the part of Ann and Jan to give this technology a chance. Jan, I'm thinking you might be more willing if I could provide a transporter device that was better suited to fitting into an outdoor environment. I'm wondering if the one available at the link below would suit?

Its a good thing I'm behind you in mileage, Ann. Not sure if I want to go in the transporter! Let me know how it goes, although the description did give a good laugh!

Was planning on a run this morning, but just haven't been sleeping well. The rain Gods did their dance & it was pouring when I was to leave for the run, so I decided it was better to get another 45 minutes of sleep. The dog even agreed!!!

Ann, I'm working the paperwork now to get the transporter to the right location. You'll recognize it when you see it. A blue building, one door, ventilation unit on the top. There's a seat inside as well. Make sure you turn the lock when you get inside so that the sign outside says occupied.

Here's an early prototype unit in case you have difficulty using my poor description above.

Okay - went for a walk in the park.

Ann - that's really wild. I love the moving walls. My renovation is not as wild. I'm having a contractor deal with it.

Speaking of wild, I was standing at the kitchen sink Friday morning at 6:30, filling my water glass and saw some movement in the backyard. There's lots of rabbits around here. First thought - that's a mighty big rabbit - realization...that's a fox. Now I live in suburbia, but there is a park nearby and a swath of land that isn't developed. So I had two thoughts - rabies and call animal control. Figured animal control wouldn't get there before the fox was gone. So I tapped on the window to see what the fox would do. Well the fox noticed the sound immediately and his (her?) reaction was to remove him(her?) self from the yard. This morning I was walking, a dog appeared from the woods by the path and made me jump pretty much out of my skin! Anyway, that's my wildlife adventure story for today.

Up early despite my best intentions. Have been to and from the Farmer's Market - beautiful strawberries await me. I'll be freezing half and eating half.

Not sure about cardio today. I did do a fast walk last night.

I got off easy today - next week is my first 20 miler! Joan, in 1946 my parents poured a 24 X 24 concrete slab and put up 3 walls and a roof. They got the 4th wall on by winter. My oldest sister was born in '49 and my brother in '53 and somewhere in there my grandmother moved in, all while the house was that size. Periodically they'd just move the internal walls around. My sister and brother remember it as an adventure - they were always allowed to take crayons, hammers, etc to the old wall during its last days. Eventually they started adding house. The last addition arrived around the time the last 2 kids did, though there were never enough bedrooms for all of us - my sister and brother took turns living in a basement room we called the cave. I was about 10 when they added a garage and they kept moving internal walls, doorways, and even stairs the whole time we lived there. I never understood why my friends' houses never changed!

Joan--home projects are what we live for at our house! We have tiled, torn down wall paper and painted, redone electrical & plumbing, had new carpet installed & are looking forward to painting the outside of the house this summer. Today it's the plumbing with a bathroom faucet that leaked into the cupboard below and then down to the basement. A bit late for work when I found this surprise, but lots of trips up and down the stairs, although the dog thought it was a fun game! Good luck on the projects.

Kevin, love the photo. I have never been to a warm ocean, so it reminds me instead of Lake Superior with the rocks and the spray.

The rain has FINALLY cleared and we expect some sunshine for a few days. It improved my mood this morning.

Hi everyone! I finally got here. Fun to see everyone walking along and chatting on the way.

I am envious about the band you saw, VB. I hope to happen across some during the summer. I pass a couple of band shells on my way home when I ride my bike from work.

I am going for the 49 miles walk. It seems short to me, but I hope to exceed it. Last week, I had a lot of back pain and had to stop walking and biking because it just hurt too much. By the weekend, though, my back was feeling better and I was pleased that I walked more than a mile before my knee hurt at all. And when I got home, it was just a little achy. This is progress.

Walking goal: 49 miles
10.8 miles walked so far, 22% done, 38.2 miles to go (further behind than I thought)
Biking goal: 150 miles
43 miles biked so far, 29% done, 107 miles to go

Lovely humidity here today. I will spare you all a description of my outfit, face, brow, whatever, now that I am back from a really otherwise good run in the park near the house. I had to work from home this afternoon. The renovation guy had to bring the tile guy by to see the work needed in my guest bathroom. I will be regaling you all with tales of my home renovation. It's exciting that it looks like we're close to starting. It's not so exciting to think of living in chaos. And everywhere I look I see more projects. Oh well. When I'm bored I eat out of boredom. I'm not expecting to be bored for a while!

Busy day today - church, lunch with friends, quick grocery store visit, home to fix lunch for tomorrow, get my act together to go to work tomorrow (sigh...) run, plant the basil & oregano I bought yesterday, start another load of laundry. Now it's back to church for band practice. We are playing a Habitat for Humanity benefit next Sunday and so are rehearing tonight with a handbell choir and a boys' choir. Should be interesting since we are not really able to play softly.

Now it's off to the showers for me!

Well, Ann, pitiful in the sense of 6 miles is 12 miles less than the 18. (I just love arithmetic!)

Put those feet up girl! You deserve it.

emoticon

emoticon = This is Ann walking briskly!

Have to write, so that Owl can see this especially, that when I was walking in the park I took a trail where you can see into the little amphitheater. A show (free - the best EVER price) was about to start. It featured a Gospel/Dixieland/something trombone (except for one euphonium) group out of Charlotte, NC. They were awesome. I was only able to listen for about 20 minutes and left as they were finishing up a really fun "As the Saints Go Marching In." It was a group called Mangum and Company Shout Band. Wish I could have stayed, but I had errands - strawberries, basil, asparagus to get at the Farmer's Market before they closed.

Joan, the 18 miles FELT excessive, well before I finished it. I keep having to talk myself out of downgrading to the half... and there's nothing pitiful about 6 miles - and we all know people who would consider that excessive (I used to be one... LOL).

Well, Ann, one might say that 18 miles is excessive, but since you have a 26 miler in your future, maybe not. Good job on the 18 today.

Meanwhile, I've done a pitiful 6 miles by comparison today. A walk this morning with a friend and a walk through the park nearby just now. I'm off shortly to pick up my sweet basil plant and take a look at the strawberries at the farmer's market.

In May we'll walk in Tahiti. Today I learned that Tahiti is part of French Polynesia. It's the largest and most populated island.

Walking this month will require the use of arithmetic! In order to get some of the longer walks in that many of us do you'll have to combine some of the walk choices below.

So, how does this work?
- Pick a distance from the list below or use math to combine some of the shorter walks into a month long mileage goal that works for you.
- Post to this thread and tell us what walk you're signing up for.
- Walk, run, elliptical - just get moving - every day and work towards achieving your goal.
- Post your daily mileage here. If you like you might also consider posting some pictures of the sights you've seen in Tahiti and the neighboring island. Google maps has a "More" button in the map area where you turn check Photos to see pictures that people have posted near your location.

See you soon in Polynesia!
