Yesterday was topsy turvy, since I spent the day on a grant panel. I didn't get my walk in until late - got home after 8 as it was getting dark, so I'm just now getting around to reporting in...

Today's our last day in Japan. Don't forget to post your wrap up for August here and then jump on over to the Hyde Park thread in Challenge walks to pick your distance for September.

I jogged today. I think the problem with my foot was a new brand of jogging shoes. I went back to the old brand (new pair, though) after resting my foot last week and put in 3.0 miles plus warm up and cool down today for 3.7 miles.

Total miles for August - 88.27, about 4 over goal.
See y'all in New York tomorrow.

OWLWHO, I just want to tell you that your quote, "Don't give up what you want most for what you want for the moment", is going to be written on my bathroom mirror, posted on my fridge, and written with my collection of quotes in my 'Journey Book'. {A scrapbook I'm making for me as I travel the road to healthier life!}
I walked 752Km, The length of Nova Scotia. Finished that in May. Finished my first 5Km road race on July 25, well I walked it, but I finished!!! And I've done nothing since, untill tonight. I read your quote, thought "Oh Heck Yes!!!", and took myself to the gym for a quick workout on break. 3am and I'm on the treadmill jogging a mile!! Thanks for the kick in the hiney you didn't even know you were giving this stranger!!

goal: Walk/bike the virtual length of Nova Scotia, 752km.As of June 28th I am 23 km's from the half way mark!! Nov 20, 08...471kms...Dec 18/08...525kms! MAY 2 2009---752KMS MET!! WOOT WOOT!!!
Success has many parents, while failure is an orphan!

I have to exercise in the morning-before my brain figures out what I'm doing!!!

I won't be reaching either my walking or biking goal. I must have had a bad math day when deciding on my biking goal. I could make my walking goal, but don't want to stress my knee too much.

Nope, Youngstown State University. I like to tell people that I'm on career #20, since I was 45 when I finished grad school. Since I'd already done so many things, including my stint with the park service, I was one of the people who was comfortable making class and public presentations right from the outset. One of my profs teased me that if he squinted a little he could see the uniform.

Your conversation this morning sounds like great fun. What a great age!

So, Ann you do have a career on the stage. I taught for four years, and that's a bit like being on the stage isn't it.

Did your preservation degree come from U of D? That's where my sister's historic preservation Masters came from.

I finished up the 84 mile walk to Mt. Fuji just now with a walk over into the park near my house and around it. While walking I was stopped by a four year old who wanted to know if a house that backs onto the lake in the park was my house. We had a wonderful conversation about why it would be nice to live in that particular house. What a wonderful moment of grace.

Joan, I spent about 5 years in retail and a couple of years as a National Park Ranger (interpretive ranger in an urban park- spent a lot of time talking to groups). These days, I'm occasionally asked to make presentations about historic preservation topics and I even offered to talk to students at Sanford about my work while I'm there, so that's about my speed as far as public speaking goes. I'm an architectural historian with an MA in history/historic preservation, BTW. I have absolutely the coolest job (even my profs from grad school think so) and that's why I offered to talk to students.

Joan, I'm not that outgoing now, let alone then. I know its hard to look back and wish you'd been there for more, but at least you did see that one. I imagine that seeing him again as a teen was a bit of a shock. My nephews were, lets see now... 12, 8, and 6 when I moved to Seattle. I only saw them a few times between then and when they were about 20, 16, and 14... all at least 6 ft tall.

So were you in Oliver Twist? If you were, I saw you. I came up from college (Washington College on the Eastern Shore) to see Jonathan in Oliver Twist. His voice had changed and the kid I knew - I'm six years older - who sang alto in an Episcopal boy's choir in Philadelphia - was a remarkable baritone. He blew me away. I wish I'd seen the shows he was in over the next couple of years.

I remember Jon. You're right, he was memorable. It wasn't just his size - it was that he was this really big, really sweet kid. I had a lot of friends in the classes of '81 and '82. There were underclassmen on teams and sometimes even in classes with us... and of course about 500 students from k-12, so a lot of us knew each other.

Wow. Very small world.

My cousin Jon, who would be 45 years old now if he were living, was a Sanford graduate. He graduated in 1982. When he was freshman he played the beadle in the production of Oliver Twist. He was a real big guy so for sheer size, might be memorable. You and he were there at the same time, but I think you were a senior when he was a freshman. He boarded his first two years - was not a day student until his last two years. What he loved most about Sanford was the stable and a horse named Zandy, if memory serves me correctly.

I know the Holiday Inn -- Naaman's Road. Have stayed there many times - unfortunately mostly for family funerals. I don't know the chemical plant in Claymont, but I thought there was a Phoenix Steel plant at the far north end of town, maybe across the border in Marcus Hook?

Oh, you do know the area! I went to high school in Hockessin (Sanford) and will be there at the end of Sept. for my 30 yr reunion. I grew up near Chadds Ford and my mom lives in Cheyney now. One of my brothers-in-law started out as a chemist in a plant in Claymont and I worked at the Hilton (now a Holiday Inn) that's right off of the 95 exit. When I worked for a bank in West Chester my boss lived in Kennett Square and would give each of us mushrooms for Christmas every year(and one of my coworkers grew up on the grounds at Longwood - dad was a gardener and now her husband is, too). I'm not sure that I can stand to eat scrapple anymore, but it would be nice to at least get a few bites of a cheesesteak +/or tastykakes while I'm there. Amazing the things we'll eat when we grow up with them, huh?

Hey Ann, I know exactly where you're talking about - SE Pennsylvania. My grandparents lived in Claymont, Delaware and my cousin lived in Hokessin. My grandmother liked to go up to Kennett Square and eat mushroom soup at some place up there. Have also done Longwood Gardens and I have a childhood friend who owns a horse farm in Delaware County.

I'm crazy about cheesesteaks, Tastykakes and scrapple.

I'll see about a walk that includes Hyde Park, since you mention that. And from my perspective as a NY City gal, Hyde Park *is* upstate! emoticon

I'm originally from southeastern PA (either western suburbs of Philly or northern suburbs of Wilmington, DE - we were closer to Wilmington).

I've been playing around with start and end points, but they're too far apart! I remember at one point seeing a view from a hillside on the FDR site near Hyde Park, NY. I think that the President (long enough ago to have possibly been Clinton) met with another head of state there and one of the photographers captured their view... beautiful! (I'm a historian and pretty much addicted to all things FDR) That's not even upstate. The Pocono mountains (run north/south up the eastern end of PA, not sure just where they end) are gorgeous in the fall... This isn't helping to narrow things down at all, is it? LOL.

Still resting my foot, so elliptical again today. Yesterday was a planned day off for several reasons - I worked from home in order to be able to attend a funeral - and it was too hot and too stressful on my foot to walk outside. That and the ragweed is in bloom and my allergies are acting up. I took my allergy meds last night and I'm feeling a thousand times better today.

Elliptical again today for 4.09 miles.

Ann - sounds like a good idea. Do you have favorite state in mind? I hear Vermont is good for leaves and I've heard that upstate New York is also. I wouldn't know about upstate, being from the city like I am originally. emoticon

Where in the northeast are you from? Maybe we could work that into the walk...

JANNERUN, sorry to hear that you're feeling poorly. Hang in there and do what you can.

VB, sorry about your foot. Do what you need to rest it. You don't want a chronic problem (I should know...)

I've had a really bad sinus infection that caused a lot of dizziness and headaches and then the side effects from the medicine cause shortness of breath and chest pains, so I haven't done anything lately and feel like such a slug. So I'll be cutting my mileage back to the 51 mile walk, and hopefully I'll be able to finish it.

Did the elliptical today. I didn't do much over the weekend. My left foot was bothering me a bit so I mostly rested. Got a little antsy from rest on Sunday afternoon and put my sneakers on to walk, but decided to cut it short and only did a half mile.
Today's mileage on the elliptical was 4.67. I'll do elliptical tomorrow - less stressful - and then we'll see.

Sort of an "easy" day today. I set a 2.5 mile goal on the treadmill with lots of hills on the course and finished it up in 25:50, which I guess isn't too shabby for me. With the warm up and cool down I covered 2.83 miles.

Was going to do the elliptical today, but decided to do a short run. So I put the treadmill on the "run around the very flat track" course and ended up jogging for about a 5K (3.1 miles). With the warm up and cool down I covered 3.33 miles. This was a much better outing than Monday, and without the hills much easier. Tomorrow is an off day.

Jan - thanks for asking.

Did the elliptical trainer today. May do that again tomorrow and take Thursday as a rest day and do elliptical on Friday. There's not as much 'stress' on my legs on the elliptical. Then I'll see about jogging on Saturday morning. Now that I'm a runner again, I've got to figure out how to rest and what cross training really works. Some days running feels really great and other days every step is a chore. Guess they balance out. I'm not going to give up on running though. It's a convenient form of cardio.

I guess it was a good thing that I had an really excellent jog/run on Saturday because today's jog/run never felt good at all. I jogged/ran for 35 minutes and then did some walking. Total distance = 4.31 miles today. I am contemplating reducing my distance goal for the month. My legs feel like they need some rest. I think I'll sleep on it...
