Another 4.5 today but split into 2.5+1+1 with rest in between - still a tightness but no pain.
Rest for Monday.
Thanks for the support.

Great time, Shark--esp. considering you were in pain. Glad to hear the leg is improving. I have a tendancy to pull something in the lower back of my leg too..don't know what I pull (not the calf muscle) but it is tough when it goes and trying to walk through it doesn't help.
Great that you got to go to that spark convention and thanks for the report.

OK - more great advice - stretch before you decide to jog the first .5 miles of the 5K - dang dang dang - pulled something in the left calf at .5 - walked it in thinking it was a cramp = drove to the Cincy Spark convention thinking it was not getting better and stretching as best I could while driving. It became clear it was a pull and I am having a tough time walking around the house. (BTW finished the 5K in 38:30 - second fastest of my attempts).
SP Nancy gave a great speech and Becky the dietitian was great too.
If you need guidance and want to see what you can accomplish check out Nancy's Sparkpage.

Day off on Sunday - makes me sad - but will see how it goes from there.

Do your best every day - but not every minute (we all make mistakes).

Don't feel the need to run (or jog) the whole way. I started by walking the 5K as fast as I could and maybe jogged a little at the end - if I felt I had gas left in the tank.
I also do my own 5k's on the local paved trail - use these as walk only training/exercise functions.
But you will find the races are favorable to walkers as well as runners - not as many but there will be people with a wide range of times.
Tips - learn you pace outside of the race environment - you will feel the urge to keep up with the pack but you dont want to burn out - keep your pace. I do go faster in the races despite this advice but have never gotten too far out of my zone.
Have fun - enjoy the group - there is down time before the race - lots of people of different capabilities but all with the same objective - finish the race as fast as you can.

I've set a goal to do at least 3 5K races in 2010. I have started training. I really have only gotten into doing a walk/jog routine this summer. Any pointers???

Its a great feeling isn't it E - I enjoy being with the group - getting out there and performing our best. Feeling like you are worn out but getting the rush near the finish to push that last couple hundred yards to the finish.
Very rewarding - very supportive groups as well. They know what all of the runners/walkers are trying to do.
Congrats on your success.

Way to go, Shark!

been absent here for a while, but I finished my first real sanctioned and organized 5k race yesterday (and all running to boot!) in 7+ years. 43:22 still about 2.5 minutes short of PR but I had a lot of reserves left (took it easy because I did not really know what to expect or how my body will react to it.)

Fitness Goals:

2009:
Finish a 5K walk/run -done 9/19 Camelot for Children 5K
Finish the C25K program -done 9/2009
Finish a 5K running -done 9/19 Camelot for Children 5K
Start triathlon training

2010:
PR in 5K road race (currently 40:46)
Enroll and Finish my first Sprint Triathlon
run 250 miles for the year
bike 500 miles for the year
run a 5K under 30:00

a little walking a little jogging. I'm trying to increase the jogging part. My regular walking pace is about 4 mph but I've been doing it for a while now. My top jogging speed is a pitiful 6-6.5 mph but I can't sustain it for very long but interval training is good so I mix it up.

Gem - I won the race today - 4.04 miles in 58 minutes.

You win the rest of the week.

I must have been slacking a bit today as I got passed for the first time in 18 months by another walker. She passed me and just kept on going.

Heat and humidity slow me down. Around 45 minutes last night for the 5K course. But my daughter has started doing this with me and she maintains good pace. I may have someone to participate with me in the organized events as well.

Have a good day.

great times! It's been so hot and sticky here where I am that I'm just walking for the most part--some of it fast, but I've put in more than 7 miles each day and sometimes 10. Today it is 7 miles.

Finished another 5K during my lunch break 48:54. Wanted to go out yesterday but it was in the 90s, humid and were air quality warnings, so I skipped.

80s and humid today, but all in all went fine

Gem - will let others deal with mole skin - I have not used it.

Did 42:43 on Saturday - self initiated 5K - was a bit off for me the whole way.

Today was hot and humid so I did weight training and will leave aerobic activity for Monday.

ok--so here is my dumb question of the day..how is mole skin used? I know it is supposed to be good for blisters, but how do you use it once the blister is there? It would seem to me that if it is put on a blister that it would tear the skin off.

Blister tips:
if if get a blister I spray on the spray bandage and sometimes use mole skin (very cheap). you can buy mole skin at the drug store and cut it to the size you need. I usually only get blisters when I race half marathons, but this spring I was getting one on the side of my heal. I've switched shoes and no longer get that blister.

walked 5k this morning in 49:30. emoticon

Gem - was at the local running (walking) specialty store this week and noted the "toed" socks - have you tried those to protect the toes? Might help.
Heels - not sure what to suggest.

yeah--I tried the different sized shoes and I still get the blisters. The podiatrist noted that I have some toe issues--and that is a big part of the problem. Surgery could be done to break and then straighten the toes, but it sounds to me like the fix is worse than the ailment so I just live with the blisters. The bandages do help somewhat. I think that all the toe stubbing and falling out of trees over the years caused my toes to be permanently crooked an hence, the blisters--on the toes at least. The heal ones? Can't blame that on anything other than bad luck I guess.

Keep after it E - activity is the key - the others are just data points we use for motivation.

Gem - hope you figure out the blisters - have you tried different sized shoes? You likely have.

Foot doc gave me a localized steriod injection yesterday to try to fix my tendon issue - feels better today but the steroid weakens the tedon for a couple of days so no aerobics until Saturday. But there will be a personal 5K held that day.

Do well.

ha, shark. Speak for yourself on the once only blister thingy. I keep buying new sneaks--I've asked the podiatrist for suggestions, I powder, I use foot deoderant--new sox--no matter what I do, I get the blisters. I found some nice blister bandages that I put on them now so I can usually head back out. Ibuprofen really work?

I went at it again. Bandaged those ankle blisters up, the weather co-operated and finished another 5K in the same course. Got a stopwatch this time: 48.41 PB for the course. Need to take some Ibuprofen before I go to bed tonight...

E - welcome and thanks for the contributions - I completed my first "official" 5K Saturday - and beat my 40 minute goal (by less than a second). Now for a new goal - I jogged the last .4 and it causes a foot tendon issue - so I am going to establish a walking only baseline and work on that time - something like sub 42 minutes for starters - around 13:30 miles.

I think many of us have had the bad shoes or bad socks issue - makes it tough to get out for a while - but an issue we generally only face once.

Do well and keep posting.

Second 5K today at my lunch break. Different course (Upper Saucon Township Community Park). .43 mile flat gravel track around a bunch of soccer fields, parked .1 miles away from the course and did 7 laps of the track to complete the 5K.

Happy to report that I reached my goal, since I walked it in 50 minutes flat.

Unhappy to report, that something gotten into my brain today and made me wear low cut socks to walk it in. The result, ankle blisters, bloody socks and bloody shoes. I got to trash every single pair of low-cut socks I own.

I completed my first walking 5K for a while (actually last time I did the distance in any form was in 2002 in the Teterboro Airport 5K. I run/walked that at 40:46; that's my PB). This course will be my personal "official" course and is the Lehigh Valley Road Runners 5K course at Little Lehigh Parkway in Allentown, PA. I did it in 54 minutes with about 60% effort and my goal is to get under 50 minutes (I can do it) so I can participate in organized 5K Runs as a walker (most of them have a 50 min cut-off time around here). I give myself a month.

13.75 miles for me from Friday through Sunday evening. The slippery ground didn't allow for much speed, but some of it was jogging and some of it was walking very fast. I may try for some jog/walk tonight. So far today, I've put in 4.75 miles but just walking. 3 miles of it was fast, the rest more leisurely. So far, the weather is dry so tonight whwen it cools down, the jogging trail is calling me.

emoticon I was looking for applause for you shark, but all I could find was this blue ribbon. Great time! I've walked over 5 miles today, but not very fast at all--too hot, too sticky for me to tolerate. Raining now....but it seems to have only added to the humidity. I may try later to get in a decent time.

Rain Delay - 8:00 5K start delayed by thunderstorm - I am ready to go but it may be another 30 minutes before this junk clears out.
Read a timely article on lightning safety this week - I wont venture out even though I would be willing to get wet.
Rain stopped long enough for a 40:41 walk/jog. Plus a cool down mile in the rain.

Do well.

But I have an idea - it is the Wacky Walkers Official Multi-location 5K Activity Walk - yes the WWOM5AW!
Here is the concept - We are all virtually connected but we are too far apart to be physically present for the event. But - through the powers of Spark People and Google Earth we can each create our own race course and do the event at a time that fits our schedules.

So what should you do? If you already have a 5K course mapped out = set a time and go race yourself - keep your time and if you wish share it with the group. If you dont want to share keep your time so you can track your progress in the next event.
If you dont have a course open Google Earth - find your house or apartment and using the path function create a 5K course. Then perform the event.

I will start - 8am Saturday I will start my portion of the event - mine will be known as the Hurrying Hoosier 5K Race Walk (and yes as the only participant I will both win and finish last).

I will post my time sometime after the race Saturday.

This should be viewed as an effort to encourage all members of the Wacky Walkers to be more active this weekend - if you can't do a 5K - plan a shorter course - but get out there and do more than you planned.

Hope someone will join me.

Shark
