You can cut out alot of sodium by home cooking Bobby. I boil beans instead of useing canned. Frozen instead of canned can help also. I will let them sit in the fridge overnight to soften if i do not have time to boil them from scratch. You can also foods that flaver each other and cut spices out almost completely. Peas and corn are good examples. Rosemary and sage also good in sothern stile soups. Sage, tyme, bazel, garlic, and unions for italian. I usually used minced spices.Garlic and Union usualy do a good job of hiding the fact that a recipe lacks salt.

OK - I started this and failed to follow through with posts - but I have had a very successful season.
I got the Spark delivered this week - I am reading it while on the treadmill - great inspiration and reinforcement - we have read much of it before but we can use the support.
75 minutes today. Plus strength - eating smarter. Feel good. 9th day in a row for treadmill time. And my foot feels the best its felt since I started exercising.

Gem - sorry for the cc hassle - been there before to and it is tough having the violation. Hope it works out okay.

Thanks for the support Cindy :).

I understand the not pretty picture lol. I personally have a horrible time with the sodium. I am on blood pressure medication, the pressure is under control but with the diabetes doctor says I will have to take it forever. Anyway, that is why I should be more careful with the sodium but I do terribly! I tend to purchase the low fat products which always contain more salt. I am trying though but I figure I can only do what I can do.

I was lucky with the cc though as it was all caught quickly, seems they had been 'watching' the place I used it at.

Thanks, Bobbie. You will be back on track before you know it. It is tough this time of year to stay on any type of schedule.

That's a bummer that the same thing happened to you as happened to Patty with the cc. It is a shame some people are that dishonest.

I tracked my food already today... I do it ahead of time in case I need to adjust anything before dinner. Some days it is not a pretty picture! Mainly keeping the sodium down seems to be my problem.

yikes Patty, I just read about the credit card thing. In November I had to go in and get all my stuff changed because someone got my numbers on that summer vacation. It sucks, a violation.

Thank you, Cindy. Actually, the credit card wasn't stolen...only the number. We don't know how it happened and can only figure that there was a "leak" somewhere on things we ordered either by phone or internet or perhaps someone got the number from those electronic card swipers in the stores. Hopefully, they will find the person so we will know how to protect ourselves better.

I'm tracking exercise today. Lost track of the foods. Had to file a police report. Someone stole our credit card information and purchased nice gift for someone. The order was placed via a computer and the fraud department at Macy's thought it was suspicious so they called us and we called the credit card company. We now have new cards. Spent some time with the police filling our papers and finding out what we had to do to protect ourselves from identity theft. We now have on file an affidavit with the major credit reporting agencies so we are safe and as far as we can tell, there was just that one purchase. Jewelry, of course. Sigh. 'tis the season. emoticon Good thing I got in 7 miles before I had to go deal with that. Endorphins help a lot when dealing with stress.

I just caught up on my recording for the past 2 days. HAHAHAHAHA

I had a party on Saturday night - lots of deep fried foods and alcohol - had fun though.
Sunday I had a family get together and had a blast! - treats, treats..did I mention treats? food - alcohol

I did my best to record it all - I fully understand why I feel like a beached whale this Monday morning LOL!

I have printed this email from WW and have it in my pocket. I WILL employ these strategies for a happy healthy holiday!

Challenge yourself to use these easy tricks:
1 Always eat a healthy dinner before you go to a holiday party.
2 Bring healthy foods to potlucks.
3 At appetizer tables, choose two or three of your favorites and put them on a small plate or, better yet, a napkin. Then, walk away. When you're done with your food, throw away the napkin or take your plate to the kitchen. Avoid large plates.
4 At a buffet, cover most of your plate with vegetables and fruits. Then find room for smaller portions of the high-calorie main dishes.
5 Watch out for times when you feel guilty for overeating. Just because you slipped up at lunch isn't license to overindulge all day. Remember: One meal is one meal. One day is one day.
6 On the nights you decide to have a drink, limit yourself to one or two. And don't indulge every night, says Fink. Also, choose wisely—a gin and tonic has 155 calories for 7.5 fl oz, while the same size frozen strawberry daiquiri has a whopping 450 calories.
7 If you are drinking, alternate alcoholic beverages with nonalcoholic, calorie-free drinks such as like flavored seltzer. Or, choose wine spritzers, which are half wine and half seltzer.
8 Drink extra water to help flush out the excess sodium you consume during rich meals.
9 No matter how busy you get, make time for a healthy breakfast. Eating a morning meal will help control cravings later on.
10 If baked goods are your holiday weakness, consider hosting a cookie party: Ask every guest to bring one batch of his or her favorite cookies, plus the recipe, and share. This way, you and your family get a variety without having to bake loads. (For extra credit, challenge your guests to bring low-fat or low-calorie cookies.)
11 Store healthy snacks at the front of your fridge and pantry, and go for them before you treat yourself to the splurge stuff.
12 Just say "no" to packaged holiday candies and cakes! So what if they're red and green or blue and white—with all the homemade goodies hanging around, you don't need them.
13 Streamline your grocery shopping with lists of the ingredients you'll need for a week's worth of quick, easy meals. This way, you won't be limited to last-minute convenience and fast foods during those nights when you're dashing around.
14 Online shopping is a great time saver, but it means you lose out on the mall walking that usually goes with shopping. Make it up by figuring out exactly how much time you saved (say, 15 minutes per gift), then increase your cardio by that much for the week.
15 On heavy-eating weeks, add some strength training to your routine. Building muscle will help your body continue to burn calories while at rest.
16 Add health-related gifts to your wish list this year—they could help make for a slimmer, healthier new year.

I have tracked a few days in a row now and it is helping me leave those delicious looking and no doubt tasty morsels right there out of my belly where they belong!

Nutrition wise I need some work on but for now I am working on the calorie parts. I know I need more fruit and veggies but one step at a time!

Tracked it all.......so day one, success! If I wanted to eat it, I had to track it and lo and behold, those tasty looking little morsels just in front of me, stayed in front of me and did not become part of me (lol. Too much trouble to have to go weigh, measure and track them so I didn't eat them.
I don't know how I was doing calorie/nutrition wise before I started to track again, but Monday....I was able to choose and balance based upon the charts.

Let's revive this for the upcoming Holidays:
My challenge:
Start using the food tracker again and more consistently. I've been slacking off and taking the easy track...veggies and water only. Now I'm going to track it all. Start the new year off right by establishing (re-establishing) a good habit.

Repeat after me - I will not eat my kids Halloween candy - for the second year in a row. Wow that sounds great.

I will not over eat at Thanksgiving - for the second year in a row. Wow that sounds great.

I will not over eat or over treat over the year end holiday - for the second year in a row. Wow that sounds thinner.

Semi-final results - holiday officially ends for me Monday morning - 186 - down 2 pounds for the holiday season - the paintball games for 3 hours Saturday helped.
We all need some mid term (4 week) goals - set yours here so be bold and start your own challenge - Gem will take care of it - you just do the work.

My challenge for this was to try to be more consistent with tracking. I did reasonably well. I tracked over 90% of my exercise--not quite a good with the food but at least better than what I had been doing. Breakfast I tracked everything, each day. It's the other meals I am less consistent about.

OK team - the time is up on this challenge - I was 188 when I started the lose 5 pounds over the holidays challenge = and I weigh 188 pounds this morning. I got it to 185 the day after Thanksgiving. I had a great 5 weeks of exercise - I just had a little to much good food to make the goal.
But I got a bunch of new clothes for Christmas - I had to take some LARGE shirts back and replace them with MEDIUMS! Jos Bank delivered a pair of 34 waist pants instead of the ordered 36's - I have not taken them back because they pretty much fit.
It is so exciting for a formerly XL and 40 waist guy to be wearing medium shirts and size 36 pants. When I started my diet I could barely get in my size 40 pants.
How is that for a positive spin on failed challenge.

Ive been racking up the miles this week. 13 yesterday and well over 5 miles each day last week--I'm not too good about getting it into the tracker so I have to work on that. Hope you all have a great day.

How does what you got for kcals compare with how many cals. the fitness tracker gives you? I get a lot more cals on my pedometer and treadmill than the fitness tracker does. Just curious.

Been running my tail off today = finally got to the treadmill for a good workout - bought a heart rate monitor - enjoyed using it. Very interesting technology.
Found that my normal program yields good target range results and the calories burned per my treadmill are about 10% high.

I like your ideas Shark--I usually eat 2oz salmon at breakfast and I find it helps squelch my appetite for a bit longer than when I don't eat it. You'll get through the plateau!

A little behind on my progress to my holiday goal.

So what do I do - panic - spin out of control - NOPE!

It is a change day - what is a change day you ask?

Simple - I've made a few changes for the day - for starters I added 3oz of salmon to my breakfast - next I went for a 4.5 mile walk outside at 13 minute pace (rather than my usual 1.6 with incline on the readmill) - and last I am headed out to a Thai restaurant for dinner - will eat healthy but not my normal fare. We will see what happens - maybe break through this mini plateau.

Walked around seeing the sights in NYC this weekend. 10 or more miles total for the weekend. I had the pedometer Sunday and 4.5 miles. Forgot to wear it Saturday, but did a lot more walking so I figure 10 or more for the weekend. Good enough for me.

HI, Was just putterin on the sight and found this challenge. So I'm going to add myself in. I would like to loose and maintain 5 lbs by Jan. 2, 2009. In addition walk 5 days a week, get on my elliptical 5 days and strenth train 5 days. The exercise is the easy part, what I put in my mouth is another.
