I just really worry about the way the burger is cooked. Is it heated on the gril right next to or on top of the last hamburger? Most places just do this and if so why bother? Have you ever asked?

I don't know if any of you have run across this website before, but it is a great resource guide for when you want to eat out and want to know what vegetarian foods will be available to you.

Not all IHOP's have veggie burgers. I went to one about a month ago and was very disapointed to see that there was nothing for me to eat there.

I totally agree with Kelly that it's ridiculous what they charge for the Boca burgers when I can buy a whole box for the same price (or less)! Besides, I think the Boca brand is kinda gross, BUT I am glad they are acknowledging us. There have been so many times I have just ordered a baked or sweet potato and some broccoli. And WHY, WHY do so many places (ie Cracker Barrel) feel they need to put MEAT in the vegetables? I'm not real fond of ham floating around in my beans! Maybe it's just a southern thing?!

BTW, the Chili's black bean burgers are great! I think they actually make them.

I don't eat at chain restuaruants too often, but I'm usually pretty good at finding veg-friendly options most of the time. Even when it's a meal that's like "shrimp or chicken alfredo" or whatever, I just tell them to put the meat on the side (my DH will eat the meat), or if It's just me and DH isn't around, I'll just ask them if they could double-up the amount of veggies in the meal or substitute the meat with mushrooms or whatever I'm in the mood for.

While it's great all these restaurants offer Gardenburgers, etc., it sometimes frustrates me because they'll charge like $8 or more for the burger when I know damn well I could be eating the same thing at home for a fraction of what they're charging.

Of course... that's what eating out is, though... everything costs at least twice as much to eat at a restaurant than it does to make it at home.

This is really cool news. And think about this: you have broadened the owner's mind about vegetarian foods and the needs of more patrons. Congrats.

That's great, Linda! That just shows that it's not fruitless to make requests; sometimes people listen. You've given everyone healthier options just by wanting them for yourself.

We have a number of local restaurants that offer delicious vegetarian specialties. It's great. A bar and grill near campus has the best veggie (black bean) burger I've ever had. They're not chain restaurants, but it sure is nice to have so many options now that it's difficult to choose where to eat!

A neighborhood success story:

A diner opened up across the street from my house about 3 years ago. My husband had joked that if we knew the diner was coming, we could have saved a fortune on the kitchen remodeling.

I used to eat pretty much all my meals there. Then, I found SparkPeople, joined WeightWatchers, started their Core diet and switched to a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet.

Needless to say, frequent meals of diner food became a thing of the past.

Yesterday, my husband gave me a new menu from the diner. At my request, the owner had added veggie burgers, a dinner salad with beans (no meat, no bacon) and the option of adding a fruit plate or veggie plate to all sandwiches instead of chips! And they always have 5 soups on the daily board and at least one of them is vegetarian. And there's a note that they'll make a Reuben without corned beef (my favorite treat that always confused the cook - he wants to substitute turkey for beef and I just want extra sauerkraut).

It's not always healthy - often cream based or very salty soup. But at least I have more options when I stop over.

I sure wish they had Ruby Tuesdays in So. Cal.--I remember eating at one in Florida a long time ago, and I loved the salad bar.

Places that have Boca burger:
Denny's
Baker's Square
IHOP

Places that have veggie burgers:
Islands
Red Robin
Elephant Bar (EB also has a tofu stir fry)
Ruby's Diner
Johnny Rockets
Burger King

(My husband, who was a meat and potato guy until 13 years ago LOVES his veggie burgers--I think it's his comfort food now.)

Excellent lunch yesterday -- at a local Ruby Tuesday's restaurant where my entire table, ordered the salad bar, which was chock full of vegetarian friendly items such as edemame, sunflower seeds, chick peas, fresh veggies, potato salad and the usual rabbit type food LOL. They also had a broccoli cheese soup, which I should not have had because it was WAY TOO salty - blecchh. But you know the story, I finished the bowl because it was there. Sigh.

Have to share my Friendly's restaurant story:

I met a friend at the Friendly's in Cortland NY yesterday - halfway between our two cities.

I ordered the Crispy Chicken Salad and told the waiter that I didn't want the fried chicken because I was a vegetarian. He said "No problem, we can put grilled chicken on top".

I didn't bat any eye, just said "no, no chicken today".

This is right up there with the bacon that keeps showing up on my side salads at Applebee's.

I agree--many more options these days; I grew up in the 70s when we lived on lentil loaf and homemade carob chip cookies...we almost NEVER got to eat out.

BTW, IHOP and Denny's also have Boca burgers. Also, on the soup front, Mimi's Cafe has veggie corn chowder (probably not vegan).

That's great! I've definitely noticed over the past 5 years or so it's been easier all the time to find things to eat. They're still not always delicious things to eat, but at least they're trying more often.

Just a note--we went to Baker's Square today and they have a new soup, Tomato Basil, that they say has a vegetable base (no beef or chicken); also, they have Boca burgers and macaroni and cheese (without chicken base, the manager says)...I was good and didn't have the mac and cheese, but the soup was really good!!
