Ok I am joining in with three goals that I will hopefully follow for the next 12 weeks!

Do 12 minutes of stretching every day.

Read 12 books in 12 weeks.

And do 12 reps of 12 exercises for my arms every day.

Really great idea! I love challenges! If it's not too late, I'd like to join. My goals:

Lose 12lbs in 12weeks
12 servings veggies/week (I get plenty of fruit, but am lacking veggies)
12 day streak: 8 glasses of water for 12 days straight (I am sooo bad at drinking water!)

Thank you.

Wow what an awesome idea! I will (try to) lose 12 pounds in 12 weeks and eat at least 12 sevings of veggies each week. I am good getting my fruits in but veggies are a little harder for me.

Good luck on your goals everyone!

It's easy because you're taking your goals and putting them in small packages that takes away the feelings of being overwhelmed. 6 in 6 or 12 in 12 seems so much more doable than I want to lose 52-100 lbs this year, know what I mean?

That's so inspirational. I don't think I would have ever taken a horrible night like that in stride. I'm sorry that the guy was such a jerk. I think I would have totally folded. Your goals are intense and I wish you the best. I'm vegetarian and considering moving my way toward vegan, but not until I incorporate more whole foods. Maybe between you and watching Forks and Knives I'll be able to make that jump

I am going to jump in for the 12 weeks that just began 3/25. In fact, I already started because I decided to go 100% vegan on Sunday after watching "Forks over Knives".

So here are my twelves in 2012:

1. Eat 100% vegan for 12 weeks - 3/25 to 5/10
2. Focus next 12 weeks of training to run in See Jane Run 5k - 6/3/2012
3. Try 12 new vegan recipes per week
4. Move 12 minutes every 2 hours (counter sedentary work)
5. Increase weight training reps to 12 per set
6.12 day streak - Logging my food every day for 12 days in a row.

This is why I decided to go 100% on Sunday. I posted it on the one month challenge:

... I just got challenged to go all the way. I started out planning to go gradually from flexitarian to vegetarian to 100% vegan. On Sunday, an old friend came to town with her new boyfriend. I went to brunch with them and I picked a BBQ restaurant because it was easy for them to find.

I ordered a meat dish and greens. They ordered a meat dish and carbos. Halfway through the meal, her boyfriend vehemently lectured me for being "overweight" and abusing my body by eating foods that were bad for me. To be polite and considerate of my friend, I did not tell her boyfriend that I had been working on my health, training for a race, and eating mostly vegan. I guess by not resisting him, he doubled down on his urgent advice to me about "Changing My Ways!" I think he was really talking to her by lecturing me in front of her, because my friend had gained a significant amount of weight since I last saw her.

Even though I think his motives were suspect, I could not stop thinking about the message behind the message. To me, completely unknown to him, he was making me think about whether or not the time for being on the fence about flexitarianism and veganism is over for me. Then I decided to finally watched the documentary "Forks over Knives". I knew about several of the doctors in the documentary and I also knew about the China Study. I guess having all of this happen at the same time has convinced me that it is time for me to be on a completely plant-based vegan diet. I recommend seeing the film, if some of you have not seen it already.

Hi again! I lost between 4-6 lbs depending on the day... only about half of my goal of 12 lbs. I wasn't really on my game until two weeks ago and I've worked out every day since then. My goal for the next 12 weeks is to follow my Beach Body Challenge using ChaLean Extreme DVDs, walk the dog 20 minutes per day, and do Zumba once a week.

This 12 in 12 goes all year! The first session ends on Monday... so if over the weekend we can all check in with losses, gains, or whatever you've learned about yourself, that would be great. The next session begins in two days. Just post what challenges you'd like for yourself in the next 12 week stretch. I'll be back tomorrow with some ideas!!! :D Love you guys!!! xxox

Boni, we can definitely do it together! I was walking the dog for about 20 minutes three times a week in the cold winter weather. Now that spring seems to be here, I'm walking 45 minutes a day. So way more mileage. :D

Wow! Way to go! I just got back to serious walking this week now that the temperature is higher and the roads are clear. 21k last week. I tend to not go out on bad weather days and that is not good. I seem to lose weight better when I exercise. So, here we go. I will refocus! Hopefully better news the next go round.

Hi Boni! :D

I lost about six pounds, so I am happy with my results, but I'm not happy about how I did not stick with an exercise program.

We have another six weeks coming up and I'm really excited about it. I'm doing the Beach Body Challenge and a new protein supplement called Shakeology. I aim to lose 12-25 lbs in the next three months doing intense cardio and muscle sculpting. :D

I just now saw this challenge and decided it would be a good idea even if I'm getting a late start. I think I will do the following:

12 minutes on the nordictrack daily
12 servings of fruit and veg daily
12 minutes of housework daily
emoticon
And keep it up for 12 weeks.

How are you all doing on this challenge?

Thanks for the info on the scales, Petalia. I'd say your method of measurement is far more accurate than scales are, for sure!

I just found this challenge so am jumping in with both feet...

Personal goals 12 pounds down by 25 March SW 195...GW 183

Up my water intake to 12 cups...that's water, not coffee, lol

With my hectic schedule those are two goals that I can honestly commit to keeping...Woohoo!

Terry, there are body composition scales. They will tell you your weight, your body fat percent and total body water. Apparently, the more hydrated you are, the lower the body fat reading. "Tanita" is a common brand for these scales. There are also skin-fold calipers. The simplest and most recommended one I came across is the "Accu-Measure". It is about $5, if that. It is the only one I know of that you can do on yourself. Plain old scale weight, for me, is not very interesting. The idea of reaching a certain number even if that means losing muscle doesn't seem right or healthy to me. Or, a person might not see their scale weight change or it might even increase, but their body composition could be radically changing, shifting towards more muscle and less fat. There's loads of discussion about how accurate all the different methods of studying one's body composition are. I like the idea of using the same method, at the same time of day for every reading. It gives you a baseline and from there a sense of progress or not.

Terry, I see a naturopath that does a test with pads on my skin like an ECG. It give her the amount of water in my cells, the amount of water on the outside of my cells, the amount of fat and the amount of muscle in my body.

Vegfairy, do you have a special scale or something that lets you know you've lost the 2 lbs of muscle? I think they make scales now that can measure that, don't they? Just curious, since I'd like keeping better track of that, myself.

WI 168 lbs, down from 172 at last weigh in, 2 lbs fat gone, 2 lbs muscle lost.

I have to work harder in next six weeks to ensure I continue to lose fat, but gain muscle. I have to get back to the YMCA and weight train, that is evident. Starting tomorrow? I might sign on for some personal training to get me started.

Down 1 pound, up 1 pound, down 1 pound. You're right, this Canadian winter - freezing rain - slippery roads are not conducive to walking and my yoyo weight loss shows it. Like you Terry, I need to focus and get serious. Since we started, I have only lost 1 pound.

Vegfaery, I dread this weigh in!!! I so dread it!!! I've not done well. I'm still struggling with "winter hybernation mode" that I seem to fall into every winter. Exercise and portion control have not been happening. That's the bad news.

The good news is that I have a doctors appointment coming up in a month, and I guess maybe I'm secretly afraid of doctors or something, because I will usually up my exercising and weight loss routine before a visit. Course a month is not long, but maybe it will make a difference.

Yeah, you are right, this probably needs to be a sticky topic, because it's so easy in an internet group to forget the "real" reason we are all here: to lose weight. I mean it's only human to get excited about recipes, suggestions for living the vegan life better, etc. etc....but at the end of the day our primary goal is to lose weight and become more fit. So a regular reminder of that...a kind of "weigh in" like in a real diet group (or Biggest Loser!), would be good. It's scary (I know I'm scared!!!) but it holds us accountable.

Most folks will not want to post their exact weight for the world to see, but pounds lost, and pounds left to reach our goal, would be good.

I think this post needs to be made sticky, since it is our challenge for 2012.

How's everyone doing?

I'm going to see my naturopath on Tuesday and I will be weighed and inspected and I hope to have some good news. I did my measurements a couple of weeks ago and I was delighted to see that I've lost more fat in inches around my body. The biggest change was on my hips and thighs and I am very thankful for that. LOL! :D I hope I'm close to achieving my goals of 12 lbs in 12 weeks. If I'm not down at least four pounds I know I have to buckle down even more. My diet is doing well... really staying focused on plants and not so much on grains. I have almost completely given up bread and pasta, alcohol and coffee, still working on sugar. I eat a lot of greens and beans, but I will admit that I have really been struggling with exercise. I know that Canadian winters don't help the situation and suffering from depression and low adrenal function often stand in my way of getting out of the house. I hope that this appointment on Tuesday will spur me on, spark an renewed interest in exercise and help me reach my goals.

Okay, so that's me!! How about you????

I like walking for the same reasons Terry. Change of scenery. Right now because of a flash freeze I am indoors knitting. O.K. playing on the internet. :-) but I will get back to knitting shortly. Booooring.

I was thinking we weren't gonna weigh in till sometime in March? (Officially, I mean). I hope so, cause I've not done very well. When I hurt my back I had to stop exercising and just rest it, and my weight has went up! But I just began my workout routine today (should have sooner, but just didn't.) Back seems to be doing fine.

I'm like you, Bonidale...walking is also my favorite exercise to do, but winter really throws a wrench in the works for me. Today I went outdoors, seeing if I could "force" myself to do it. But it was freezing outdoors and I just could not make myself do it!

So I went inside, and did a routine where I did my "walking" on my rock and roll stepper and would do that for five minutes, then I'd switch to my regular stepper to do my "hiking" and I'd do that a few minutes, and kept going back and forth on those and that turned out to be a very effective workout! I was breathing heavy and sweating and felt like it was summer time again!

But it's still not the same as walking outdoors (which is less boring...seems like there's always something new to see when one is outdoors). But man, so far I just can't handle those cold temps! Maybe I'm a namby pampy, I don't know...but I just hate the cold! But at least maybe now I have an effective indoor workout...just will have to try to overcome the boredom of being indoors for my "walking" workout.

I can only focus on one thing at a time too and I know what you mean about the exercise. I don't have a nearby gym and icy road conditions sometimes limit the hours I can spend walking which is my favourite calorie burner. Good luck with your weight loss goal! "See" you at the end of the month and hopefully both of us will be 4 pounds lighter!

Boni, I'm not weighing in until the end of the month when I see my doctor again. By that time I hope to be down 4 lbs, but we will see. I haven't really started exercising yet, I think I'm focusing too much on this elimination diet. My numbers are excellent, but I should be doing more at the gym.

My goals this week is to:

1. Strengthen my back (which is almost better now) with daily walking and stretching.
2. To save the weight lifting till next week (because I'm obviously having tight muscle issues and need the walking and stretching to relax them.)
3. Using my Food Mover daily (Richard Simmon's little diet gadget that I use instead of Spark Peoples bells and whistles.)
4. Getting in more veggies than ever before (and less bready, carby stuff).
5. Working harder to keep my food vegan.

emoticon That is great news! I'm not weighing in until January 31 when I've been to see my naturopath. I was 174 on her scale at that time which is 172 on my scale. I had lost eight pounds of fat and put on two pounds of muscle since mid-October when I'd last seen her. My hope it to be down another four to eight pounds at my next appointment. I'd better get out there and starting walking and lifting weights. :D

My goals for the week were:

12 minutes - Logging at least 12 minutes of your chosen cardio at least three days a week.
12 day streak - Doing the challenge every day for 12 days in a row.
12 reps - Strength training at least twice a week and doing reps of 12 for each exercise.
12 servings of fruits/vegetables - What kind of vegetarians and vegans would we be if we didn't eat our veggies?
12 kilometres - Walking, running, jogging, swimming, etc. per week minimum distance.

I did the 12 minutes every day... woohoo! I completed my streak! Definitely got my 12 fruits/vegetables, but I didn't do the weight training or 12 km. So I'll work on that for the next week.

:D

Just found this thread this morning but I'm in, made the commitment and started last week.

My challenge TO MYSELF is to lose 12 pounds in 12 months, while becoming a semi-vegan. I'm aiming for 12 vegan breakfasts, 12 vegan lunches and 12 vegan dinners per month (expect to increase this later in the year); 3 times a week 12 strength training machines X 12 reps; 144 (12 X12) minutes cardio per week.

In week one, I met all personal challenges. Vegan breakfasts and lunches are proving very easy; dinner is more of a challenge because my husband usually cooks and, while he's not generally into big chunks of meat and has gotten quite turned onto vegetarian recipes in the daily NY Times, he does include some animal products like chicken broth and cheese. I was thrilled to discover that I could convert one of my favorite recipes (Thai Noodle Salad) to vegan merely by using agave instead of honey.

Here's to week two--good luck to everyone. We're doing this for ourselves, and we can do it. emoticon

I do not see this as a contest against others, it's a challenge to those interested in meeting goals this year. I work for myself and I live for myself. Losing weight and eating healthier shouldn't need to be a challenge, but for a lot of us it is.

Sounds like folks are doing good with the challenge!

By the way, I said something in one of my previous post about how I was getting inspired here because "I love a challenge", but I wanted to let members know that I'm not looking on it at all as a challenge against them (who can lose the most? If I do, I win, win, win and you lose, lose, lose!!!--type thing.) My ONLY competition here is against MYSELF! (That's hard enough for me! Ha!) I only want to use the "common goal" feeling here to inspire me...but I just needed to let you folks know that I'm not competing against anyone.

I doubt at the rate I'm going I'd win, anyway, even if winning was the plan! LOL! I got on my "rock and roll stepper" this week and (genious that I am) I took to exercising again as if I had not stopped (which I had stopped for several weeks) and I decided to increase the hand weights I was using on the stepper from one pound to two pounds. Well, oddly enough that small extra weight was enough to mildly hurt my back. So now I'm having to recover from a mild back injury. (When will I learn that I'm not 17 anymore! HA!)

This is my third day of taking it easy, so I plan to start walking and just mildly stretching after that, which is a good way to ease the back back into life again.

Hi everyone! I'm so glad people are still joining us.

How are you doing so far?

I'm trying to do a 12 day streak.. logging in every day with my food and exercise and then actually exercising my 12 minute walk every day. Today was a good day because I had my Jump Board class this morning at the gym, then I walked 40 minutes with my son to do his paper route and then later this afternoon I'll walk the dog for 12 minutes. Some days (because I suffer from depression) it's hard to even get out for that 12 minute walk, but I'm on a roll right now, today is day 5! :D

I'm doing great on my elimination diet. Basically it's a most raw vegan eating plan for two months with no gluten, no sugar, no caffeine and no alcohol. I'm drinking lots of water and eating plenty of greens. I hope to lose at least 8 lbs doing this.

Let me know what we can do for you! Do you need some inspiration?

I am SO up for this challenge (I think I gained 12lbs in 12 days over the holidays!!!).

I’m a late starter as I just got back from my New Year’s vacation with friends.

So my first 12s:
I would love to lose 12lbs in 12 weeks.
12 new recipes minimum in 12 weeks.
Be totally Vegan in 12 weeks (I’m just beginning)
Try 12 new things in 12 weeks (these could be anything at all!)
Build up to a minimum of 12 miles running per week by the end of 12 weeks

I’m going to post this as a mini-blog too to keep them visible to me!

Good luck everyone!

I will do the lose 12lbs in twelve weeks, 12 glasses of water per day, and twelve minutes of fitness related activity 4 time a week. It'll be good to have something to take my mind off of wedding stuff for these last four weeks! Good luck everyone!

Where do you live that it is -17? That sounds like Canada or Alaska if you live anywhere on the North American Continent. I guess I won't complain about having rainy weather to walk in, at least it keeps out weather in the upper 30's to mid 40's as a winter average.

I like some of these challenges.

12 minutes walk is easy for me. It takes me 7 just to get to my mail box and back. And I put in at least 30 minutes a day walking.

12 fruits and veggies a day should be easy for me after I get a good smoothie maker. I am thinking about the Ninja because it is compact in size and has a 1 cup food processor attachment I could use for nuts, grains and flax seed.

Yes, it will be THAT cold here tomorrow! Today it's hovering near zero Celsius or 32 F. A nice day... the calm before the storm. Brrrrr.

We have such fabulous weather here in Madrid now...should be wintertime, but feels more like spring. Got out today with my new pedometer and the Runkeeper on my iPhone, and it was such fun. I immediately felt like old times and feel like this time I can get going again. Have had some foot issues, lasting for a couple of years, with hardly any walking, so am feeling blessed. Today did 6000 steps from 4 pm, so tomorrow will hit the 12,000 for sure. This is going to make a difference!

Did you say 17 degrees "below" zero? Now THAT is cold!!! Yep, exercise indoors! Vegfaery, it's been getting down in the 20's in my area and I feel like I'm freezing! Ha! Imagine how I'd be at the temps you are facing! Ha! All my workouts have moved indoors! I'm just not a winter person.

Stay warm!!!

I used my rock and roll stepper yesterday and worked up a sweat, and then today did a basic weight lifting routine (in other words, an easier "getting-back-into-it" routine. (Funny how on some weight exercises I was just as strong as before, and others had my arms to trembling! Ha!) Amazing how exercise is...cause just two days into it and I'm already feeling better than I have in a few weeks.

I luv the idea of a 12 challenge. Will join gladly and expect to hit it hard. Today got a new pedometer, got it worked out, and am about to head out for a spin around my urba. My goal is 12,000 steps a day, tho might be tomorrow before I can get it going. My main problems is water drinking, making myself do weights, and promise to do both beginning today. We can do this yall! Good luck! emoticon

So last night I told my partner that I had to walk 12 minutes every day minimum. She said that wasn't much... but it was 6:30 at night and I had not yet moved my body. So into the very windy night we ventured with the dog in tow. We all walked for 12 minutes and I met my challenge for the day. :D Great practice for today... day one of 12 weeks to lose 12 pounds!

Count me in! This challenge is right on time for me. I have been struggling for consistency with weight training. Adding the 12 reps and committing to strenth training at least twice a week sounds doable.
Also, the 12 minutes of cardio sounds doable!

I'm up for the challenge. I weighed this morning and was not happy with what I saw.
Would love to lose 12 pounds.
Also can handle the 12 minutes a day and hopefully more.
The 12 servings of fruits and veggies should be doable too.

I'll sign up for this challenge, too, Vegfairy...and it's a good, doable challenge. I think it helps me "want" to do it because you've placed an end date to it (as far as when this first challenge ends) and I guess maybe I love a challenge like that (maybe I'm competetive?)

I'll take on one of your challenges of:

*12 reps - Strength training at least twice a week and doing reps of 12 for each exercise.

I know that sounds like few, but I'm adding some of my own:

*Aerobic exercise at least three times a week.
*Using a vegan exchange diet system daily.
*Checking into if there's a local diet/support group in my area to help keep me motivated. (And use this group for motivation, too.)

When I last saw the doctor my weight was 172. My goal of losing eight pounds in 8 weeks was probably a bit ambitious since I haven't really done anything to make it happen. I see her again in the beginning of February, just four weeks to go. I can definitely lose 4 lbs in 4 weeks, and with the help of this challenge, I feel very motivated to succeed.

I'll weigh in at my next appointment and hopefully I'll be where I need to be to be on target with this challenge and the challenge she gave to me. From the list on the first post, I have chosen:

12 minutes - Logging at least 12 minutes of your chosen cardio at least three days a week.
12 day streak - Doing the challenge every day for 12 days in a row.
12 reps - Strength training at least twice a week and doing reps of 12 for each exercise.
12 servings of fruits/vegetables - What kind of vegetarians and vegans would we be if we didn't eat our veggies?
12 kilometres - Walking, running, jogging, swimming, etc. per week minimum distance.

Hopefully that is not biting off more than I can chew. Here's to 12 lbs in 12 weeks!

This challenge for 2012 is as easy as it needs to be or as complex as you decide. The main goal for this challenge is to lose 12 pounds. For some people it will mean losing 12 pounds in 12 months and for others it could mean 12 pounds in 12 weeks and anything in between. For some of us we might decide to lose 12 pounds in 12 weeks several times over.

Please choose as many challenges from the list below or none at all. It's all about you. Pick one for now and then add a couple more when you've mastered the first one.

12 minutes - Logging at least 12 minutes of your chosen cardio exercise at least 3 days a week.
12 day streak - Doing the challenge every day for 12 days in a row.
12 reps - Strength training at least twice a week and doing reps of 12 for each exercise.
12 servings of fruits/vegetables - What kind of vegetarians and vegans would we be if we didn't eat our veggies?
12 miles or kilometres - Walking, running, jogging, swimming, etc. per week minimum distance for some, maximum for others.
12 activities - Learn the art of meditation, yoga, or Pilates. Take up ballroom dancing, tennis or synchronized swimming. Add 12 new activities to you exercise regime and share them with us.

If you think of others, I can edit the post and add your suggestions.

The first 12-week period is Monday, January 2 to Sunday, March 25. In that time you can try to lose 12 pounds in 12 weeks or just 2 pounds if your goal is not that ambitious. At the end of this period, we'll re-group and begin anew.

Please share your comments, experiences, triumphs and struggles with us. Don't disappear if things get tough, we're all here for each other and so if you hit a hurdle, let us know and we'll talk you through it. This particular Spark Team is comprised of a great many very helpful and insightful people. I am just so optimistic about our chances for health success in 2012. I just know that together we will succeed.
