FBS is fasting blood sugar, that critical statistic that rules the lives of all diabetics each morning. Below 120 is a good range, but my high of 187 was much better than the 200+ I was having before the cleanse. I've never done a cleanse before, so I don't have anything to judge by, but the Isagenix cleanse was easy enough. The actual cleanse part was only two days at the beginning and two at the end. In between those, I ate a normal lunch and had the Isagenix shakes for breakfast and supper. I was seldom hungry and eating two almonds every two hours took care of the mouth hunger. After that,I'm primed to think cutting back on portions is easy!! The improvement in the diabetes is phenominal.

There's a new thread, also under Vegan Challenges for Week 2. I posted everyone's weights. Jocelyn, I am not sure what your weight is, so I just said you're down 2 pounds.

Someone started a Week 2 topic and a bunch of folks posted results there.

Running Jo - where do you want the posts to go?

FYI - I was only down .2 this week. Shoot. Haven't broken this stupid plateau yet. Hopefully next week.

Good luck with that!! It's amazing that you did an 11-day cleanse. sounds so hard!

What does FBS stand for?

Anyone else have weigh-ins to report? I hope we didn't lose everyone in the first week!!

week one: 182 lbs, FBS 187, inches lost: 10
SW 182

The inches lost was from the 11 day cleanse I did. The most weight I lost down to was 180 (6 lbs) but as soon as I started eating regular again, I gained two pounds. This week I am determined to get at least one more lb off by careful eating. Starting this week, I'm following Dr. Barnard's plan for reversing diabetes at NutritionMD.org
Regulating the blood sugar is more important than the weight loss, but they work together.
Wish me luck!

Sorry about the audition, RunningJo, but if it opens new doors of opportunity in the future, then it will definitely have been worth your time. :) And if he wanted a different style of voice, then it doesn't mean you have a lack of talent, so I hope you find comfort in that!

I weighed in this morning, and I lost but I feel like it doesn't count! We were low on food yesterday until I went to the grocery store in the afternoon, so my lunch was very, very light. So I think that's why my number went down so much. But oh well, it's what I weighed this morning, so I'm going to share it!

Sorry you did not get the opera thing, but I am sure that there are better things ahead. Did you ever go on one of those American idol shows, or even audition for one? I watch them occasionally but not to often. i have also watched some Canadian idol spots. tomorrow is weigh-in Day, I am sure i will be successful again, thanks to everybody giving me encouragement. for me it is a matter of life or death, to get rid of that belly fat.LOL I just finished getting a full body massage tonight, ah! luxury! but the sciatic right leg is still killing me. It actually hurts worse than the heart but the heart is more deadly. LOL

I notice that my weight always comes up as Kg but believe me, I never weighed 210 Kg LOL It should be reading pounds (that is what my scale says), and I cannot seem to change it so wanted you to know. LOL

Congratulations, you guys on losing this week!! I am going to take my weight from this morning, which was 142.6, because I went a little overboard tonight and I know tomorrow's weight will be more. Yes, that's cheating, I know. But I'm down 2.2, and although much of that was TOM water weight, I can start fresh tomorrow after a good night's sleep. I'ts been a stressful weekend.

I didn't get the gig I auditioned for on Saturday.... I think it was that I'm the wrong voice type (he seemed to want more of a high soprano), but possibly also because I just don't look the role. I'm a little sad.... but hopefully more things will come in the future. The guy runs an opera company in NYC. He seemed to like me and maybe he'll use me on another project. who knows?

I'm singing a gig two weeks from today in New Hampshire. I would be thrilled if I got down to 140 by then so I feel good in my dress.

What an awesome life you are having, travelling around the world. You will have memories to tell your kids or cousins forever. your partner sounds so supportive. Mine is too and it is so much easier to have someone help you along than to make fun of you. He has even gone vegan from vegetarian, just to support me ( he does not have a weight problem) so I have no problem in making meals. I am so blessed. Enjoy your rest of the stay on the other side of the world and welcome to coming back too. Do you have jobs to come back to? Write a book or do a travel documentary if you took lots of pictures. emoticon

Congratulations Runningjo, (I hope I am not premature) on your audition. Hey, in make up and stage stuff they can make you look just about any age they want LOL I, personally, have known two opera singers in my life, and that is so cool. they are far from my life now but I would love to hear you sing. Send me a CD eh? LOL
I am still on track for Mondays weigh in.

BLM - I actually am not doing so hot with my water these days. That's a good idea though - to try to focus on that. I recently read on Sparkpeople about the study that just came out about the dangers of sitting too many hours in a row, so I was already thinking about setting an alarm to go off every hour or so, so that I can remember to get up. Perhaps I can set the alarm and walk around while drinking water! That should help me to start off with at least.

And RunningJo, wow at being an opera singer! (I was about to say I've never met one in real life, but I guess I still haven't, lol, since I haven't ACTUALLY met you.) But good luck with it!

Temporary- I'm auditioning for a new opera that will premier at Opera Company of Philadelphia. I'm a singer. I'm actually auditioning for the role of a 15-year-old girl, so I might not get it if he doesn't think they can make me look 15 onstage. (But in opera, teenagers are always cast older because you have to be a trained singer to sing almost everything.)
Sorry about your ankle! I get knee problems when I run sometimes, but I find that when I'm just a little bit lighter, like 5 pounds, it goes away. Another incentive to the lose the weight!

I have problems with food too... I still have an emotional attachment, and when I'm stressed or hormonal (like I was this week) I just want sweets and NOW. I am over my maximum almost everyday, but I also work out a lot. Just yesterday I burned about 1100 calories with everything I did. And tonight I'm going to run 9 miles. However, I sneaked a peak on the scale today and I'm down 2 pounds! And you probably already know this, but if you really bulk up on the veggies, it can hold off your hunger amazingly. I had a bunch of broccoli with olive oil as a snack yesterday, and I wasn't hungry again for another 4 hours.

Good luck, and have an active and healthy weekend everyone!

Temporary,

Are you drinking enough water everyday? I find that when I drink my 2 liters of water during the day (take a drink every 5-10 minutes) it makes me feel less hungry and keeps my mouth occupied. I also found mint gum to help - A LOT. I'll chew it mid-morning to keep my snacking before lunch down as well as after dinner since late night snacks tend to be a problem for me. The mint helps with digestion, keeps the mouth busy and curbs my appetite (nothing seems appealing with the taste of mint in your mouth). I've tried other fruity gums and they kind of make me hungry for sweet, fruity food.

Another thing is that eating more 'mini' meals works well for some people and is supposed to help keep the energy going all day long, but if many little meals don't fill you up and you're always hungry for the next one, maybe eating fewer ones that are more satisfying will work better for you.

Just a few suggestions. This diet should be a change to a healthier way of living - not torture where you're always hungry! emoticon

Yeah! I found you again by accident. I was just posting on the regular format and I did not know how to find you again, is what I said in my post but I did lose the one pound so I am now 199. Hurrah. I guess I was typing in the wrong name for the lose 10 lbs in 10 weeks thingy and now I have already lost the next pound but I will not weight in until Monday and then maybe I will be sown to 2. Way to go Jonibee1. I love you too.
All this marathon talk makes me feel bad. I have a daughter who runs 100 miles. Wow.
But the gal with the ankle problem. JFYI I broke my left ankle when a teenager, falling off a horse LOL and thru' the years the pain got worse. (arthritis had set in) but after we had been veggies for at least a year (now over 3 years) I never have pain in the leg or in my terribly crippled hands which are now pain free and I can knit and crotchet again. well as I mentioned, I did have 2 heart attacks over Christmas (why I will never know)To me it was just a great big warning to GET RID OF THE BELLY FAT. I was not giving my heart room to breath! Yesterday my naturopath let me go back to Aquasize but to take it easy. I did, and it was so wonderful to get back in the water again. Can somebody tell me how to post me picture in the full body castor oil wrap?

What kind of audition do you have, RunningJo? If you tell me you're a dancer, I will be so jealous! That's my dream job in an alternate universe. (Meaning I don't actually have the talent in this universe to even try, lol.)

My ankle is acting up, which is really frustrating me. So today, I wanted to ride my bike to stay off of it, but the weather does not want to cooperate. So I may have to do a video, but most of the videos I have that give me a good workout are pretty high impact, so I really shouldn't. Blech.

And tomorrow I'm running 4 miles. Also high impact, I know. But I'll wear my ankle brace!

I'm still having trouble with food. I'm going over my calories every day, but I'm really not sure where else I can cut corners. I eat 4 meals a day and one snack, and I am really quite hungry for each one of those items. I should probably find a way to make each one of my meals a bit less calorie-heavy, but it's a process that I'm still trying to figure out.

Good luck with the interview RunningJo! And that's awesome you're running a half marathon. I used to run when I lived in more of a 'town', but now that I'm in a big city I hate it - too many people around! My boyfriend runs regularly and I'm hoping I'll get out there one day this weekend.

I find weekends are the worse for both my exercise and eating because I don't have the structure to keep me busy (and not eating). I am really good at drinking water all day at work, but for some reason I just can't get into the habit when I'm around the house. I need to work on that starting this weekend. emoticon emoticon

I need to run 9 miles at some point this weekend, as part of my half marathon training (NYC half, March 21!!). I'll probably do that (gasp!) Saturday night. I have an audition Saturday afternoon, so I don't want to workout before my audition because it tires me out. So I'll probably run when I get back from the city.... Sunday is generally my off day. But considering we're weighing in on Monday, I probably should do something, at least walk a couple miles. Weekends are actually the busiest time for me! Weeks have been pretty dead because I'm... well, unemployed. But I have an interview on Monday!

so what's everyone doing this weekend to keep on track and ROCK our 2nd week weigh in? I tend to get lazy on the weekend as the gym we go to is not open (it's a european thing - a lot of 'inconveniences...). i have my Crunch Fitness Fat Burning Pilates DVD i am going to do. maybe i can motivate for a run too! we'll see if the weather (and mentality) will cooperate.

That's great! It really helps to have supportive people around. My boyfriend supports my healthy habits and is eating much better since we got together. He's a steak and potatos kind of guy with a whole bunch of snack food thrown in..lol I'm a pescetarian and I love trying new recipes and veggie dishes so we're finding a happy middle ground. He's starting to try new foods and getting some greens in his diet. I'm so proud :)

The most important people to me are my family. My husband is a nice healthy weight, and is super supportive of my decision to get healthy. My kids are too young to be a real support system, but they go with the flow as far as food is concerned. Well, two of them do, the other one is just too picky :)

I'm going through a similar thing right now with having trouble making friends! I'm American, but lived in the UK the past year and half, then moved to the Netherlands in December. I did make a really good friend in my time in the UK, but now I'm back to knowing no one - except now I don't speak the local language either!

It has been good for my diet though as I have trouble reading food packages, so in order to make sure that I'm not accidentally eating animal products, I mostly stick with whole food these days.

ALTHOUGH the scale went in the wrong direction this morning! I didn't enter it into sparkpeople, so don't bother checking out my ticker, lol, as it's now a lie!

It's actually a half pound over my starting weight for this challenge! I have to get it back down before Monday.

To answer today's question, the most important people in my life are my husband, my parents, and my sisters. My husband is definitely supportive of my veganism now (though he resisted when I first decided to make the jump), and he loves how it helps him eat healthier, too. Most of my family just thinks I'm a bit weird for eating this way, although my littlest sister did just start doing Meatless Mondays, so I'm really excited about that.

That's so cool that you moved to Spain! I would love to live overseas, but not exactly sure how to make it happen. My boyfriend and I are hoping to live in Germany one day. We're both opera singers, so there is work in Europe, more work than in the states. It would be cool to raise German-speaking kids. ;-)

He's really supportive of me, but I also know when to just stop talking about weight and food all the time. And it's healthy to focus on the other things in your life instead. I used to have a best friend with whom I'd talk about weight issues, but we had a falling-out about 2 months ago. I've since realized that talking to her really got me down on the issue. I would constantly have to talk her up and reassure her that she's not fat(she's like a size 6).

I live with my parents (to PSYCHOJULES), but I can't talk to them about this stuff, except to say that I'm trying to lose weight, and don't eat my food. :-) My mom has had weight problems herself, but she's a very private person. She's not really big into the heart-to-heart conversations.

my boyfriend is the most important person in my life. we moved to spain about 1 1/2 years ago and it's been a sort of rough transition (but coming back to the states in April!!) as the language barrier has prevented us from making any really good friends we can relate to - so he's kind of all I got here. Don't get me wrong, we've had a great time traveling and experiencing a ton of new things, but there are so many cultural differences that we just don't fit in. #1 being the lack of a vegetarian culture!

anyway, after about a year of being pretty lazy (we both were pretty active when we were in the states) we decided to excersise more and be more conscience of how much we ate. We've been vegetarian for 10 (him) and 8 (me) years now, so the transition hasn't been so much of WHAT we were eating, but HOW MUCH. As for working out, I was very intimidated to join a gym here as most people in Spain are TINY(!) and I just felt 'too fat' to start working out there (if that makes any sense.. I'm overweight, but don't want to work out because I'm overweight...). So, my boyfriend who isn't much of a gym person joined with me to help me get over my intimidation.

He's been very supportive and has dealt well with me cutting foods out of the house that I tend to go overboard with - he puts his foot down at chocolate though, and I'm ok with that. Anything in moderation. We've both lost about 10 lbs and even though we love each other just the way we are, the changes in our healthier lifestyle are making us not only look, but feel better too.

ps. sorry about the SUPER long post. As you can tell, I don't have any 'girls' (sorry any guys on the post) to talk about these things with. emoticon

its hard to say who the most important person to me is--i suppose my dad and mom, no one else yet. mom doesn't know much about my goals, but as long as i'm eating right i think she's okay with it. dad just wants me to lose weight, mostly admittedly for health reasons, but it gets annoying listening to lectures though i have been working on it myself already. he means well, though.

I am living with my son for past six months and he is very very supportive of my weight loss efforts. He encourages me, guides me and answers all my questions regarding good nutritious food as he is finishing his Masters in nutrition. He is the one who introduced me to Sparkpeople. My husband passed away two years ago and that has forced us to look at our health issues.

My husband of nearly 41 years loves me no matter what I look like, but I like me better thinner. He has been supportive of my desire to eat vegetarian and when he fixes supper, if I'm going to be there to eat it, he eats vegetarian too. He doesn't undermine me by choosing places to eat out that are difficult for a diabetic vegetarian -- even though he loves those all you can eat fried fish places! So I return the favor by eating baked or grilled fish once in a while so he can enjoy his fried platter.

I have two people who are very supportive of me.

My husband, first, who is just as excited as I am about eating veggie meals. That helps so much when not all of my dinners come out as good as I would have liked. :) He is always telling me how beautiful I am and that if I never lose any weight he would love me no less.

My good friend down the street, is my second support. She is also trying to lose weight so it helps the two of us to rant/beam/just talk about how life is going and those dreaded cravings we all get. Sometimes it is just easier to talk about food/weight loss issues with her than my husband(no matter how supportive he is...it is a girl thing). We have lunch together at least once during the week at her house and so that is fun to have a healthy lunch to share with a friend.

My boyfriend is the most important person in my life. Although he thinks I am beautiful exactly how I am, and doesn't feel I need to lose weight, he still supports my determination to get fit and healthy, and when we're together, we cook healthy vegetarian meals together. He lives in Boston, I'm in New Jersey. He has lost about 60 pounds in the last few months, just by changing his diet, so he is an inspiration to me. I love him SO much. We're still getting to know each other, so he doesn't exactly know how deep my self-image issues stem from, but whenever I open up to him and tell him something important to me, he's completely understanding. He is amazing.

My husband and my son are the two most important people in my life. My son is grown and living in California (I'm in Michigan) so my being a vegetarian does not affect him. My husband is supportive and eats the vegetarian meals I cook but eats meat when we eat out.

The most important person in my life is my son (my husband passed away eight years ago). He is very supportive of my lifestyle. He started eating vegetarian a couple of times a week a few years ago, and now he seldom eats meat. He has no problem eating whatever I eat when he visits and he and his wife will make and eat vegetarian meals with me when I visit him. They don't go vegan, but hey...

You all are so creative with your meals!

I made lentils today... They were actually supposed to be lentil patties, as found in my Vegan Kitchens cookbook... But for some reason they didn't stick together and I couldn't make them into patties. So I just called them lentils mixed with onions, walnuts, and spices and called it a meal. ;-)

New question... I want to get to know all of you, so let's get personal. Who is the most important person in your life, and are they supportive of your weight loss goals?

I'm a late-joiner... wanted to post this week's weight so I can be on track for the Monday weigh in..

151.2lbs

Hoping to be at 140 before going back to the US in April. This challenge is perfect!

Dinner tonight: Chickpea and cauliflower curry (Chana Masala) with onions and red cabbage mixed in and a few tablespoons of greek yogurt. It's a great substitute for sour cream in any dish!

I made saag last night for dinner. I made "paneer" out of tofu, and it turned out pretty tasty!

Tonight's dinner will be Cuban black beans served over quinoa. I don't have any vegetables to do a proper side though. Well, I do have kale that I was going to use for tomorrow's dinner, but perhaps I can just use the kale tonight and force myself to hit the store tomorrow instead of today. :)

I'm supposed to cross train today (meaning anything but run), but I feel pretty blah. I started my period yesterday, so that could be why. Perhaps I'll do one of my easier videos and just be happy that I did SOMETHING.

The scale has gone down (less than a half pound a day, but still any movement down is good) two days in a row now, so I'm pleased with that. I should try to use that good feeling to get me to move my body today!

Dinner tonight needs to be really healthy... Maybe leftover split pea soup that I have in the fridge. I had a horrible run-in with reese's peanut butter cups this afternoon. :-( It's just a really bad time of the month... I'm so lethargic and don't want to move. I think I was hoping the sugar would give me a rush of energy. It did, but I know I'm going to crash tonight, well before watching the Biggest Loser. well... we all have those days. I'll get it together, starting... NOW.

I weighed yesterday and was 129.4 I am getting frustrated for the last couple of weeks I am not losing anything. I have been going to the gym twice and yesterday I went walking. I think maybe I am eating too many nuts. I make a mix of them and eat 1/2 cup. So today I bagged them doing 1/3 cup. I walked over 6,000 steps yesterday. Getting 10,000 steps in was harder than I thought it was going to be. My rottie was getting tired, so had to take him home.

Hope your first day went well!! I had a great workout, but went a little overboard with eating... I just get so hungry when I exercise really hard. It's a constant struggle. Today's workout is running 4 miles (I'm training for the NYC Half Marathon on March 21) and then I'm hoping to go to Zumba tonight. I went last week for the first time, and I really loved it!

Question of the day: What's for dinner tonight?

Not sure what my answer would be for this.... I'm low on groceries, and hoping to get some ideas!
