On pasta I tend to just sprinkle nutritional yeast when I'm feeling to lazy to make a faux parmesan. I also sprinkle it on pizza, but not too thick or it gets kind of pasty. A lot of health food stores sell commercial fake parmesan, but I find it to be kind of overpriced so I've never tried it.

Also, I know it's off topic, but someone mentioned a nacho cheese dip with nutritional yeast, so I figured I'd link to my favorite one I've tried. I made this a few weeks ago, added a can of vegan chili, and dumped it over rotini to satisfy a major chili mac & cheese craving. Oh man, so good.

Hi Astro,

"MOM2JLP" mentioned the Parma product kinda midway through this this thread. (I haven't tried it, but apparently it is good.)

Hope you're able to locate some.

Grace & Peace,

I haven't found this yet -- but it's supposedly a fantastic vegan parmesan cheese:

www.eatintheraw.com/ -- it's called Parma!

Anyone here try this?

Hi MMATHEWS!
I have just started using Nutritional Yeast, & I do think a lot of people use it in place of Parmesean Cheese on pizza & stuff. However, I've been adding it to different things (like on top of rice & sprinkling it on toast). It has a really unique flavor that I think goes well with lots of foods.

You've gotta try it!

So, I haven't had nutrition yeast, do you use it in place of parmessan, (Which I now just go with out) or what do you do with it?

Thanks!

Crazy right?! I did the same thing with Quorn, which I think tastes just like chicken. If I sneak it in without saying anything he thinks it's great, but if I ask him to try it, he balks. Stubborn man... emoticon

i LOVE nutritional yeast - it is full of all the B vitamins (esp. B12) that vegetarians may lack if they don't eat well. but on the condiment track, we went and bought Parma last week - it was in the refrigerated cheese alternative section of our coop. it's basically raw walnuts, yeast and sea salt (similar to the great recipe posted earlier). i love it! and my son loves to put our new "sprinkles" on his food. :)

Hey thanks for the website and advice. I checked our local king soopers (they carry Kroger) and I couldn't find the nutitional yeast but they did have bulk foods and lots of good stuff. Our safeway has grind our own peanutbutter bins and bins of bulk food and they had wheat gluten. I live in Greeley, CO which anyone who's read fast food nation knows it's got a huge packing plant, but our west side of town has some semi-upscale grocery stores and someday maybe we'll have a whole foods. There's a small grocer that has organic produce but they didn't have egg replacer or nutritional yeast.

I made the mozerella cheese and just used some brewers yeast flakes which are quite delicious. I put a little smoke flavor in it. It could be worse and it was fun to make. I'll decide what I think after it refrigerates. I was impressed how it got kind of stretchy and formed a ball in the pan though, it's a nutty, smoky, odd kind of substance :)

We'll see I guess!

Red Star Nutritional Yeast--is a great supplement and tasty treat for vegetarians. My kids love it on top of pasta.
I didn't by mine online, but I found some online venders that sell Nutritional Yeast. You can see what the package looks like to make your search easier.

It is cheaper in bulk, but I like the convenience of the shaker for the children. I paid about 4 dollars a container at my local health food store, but I bought 6 at one time and got a discount.

I buy my nutritional yeast in the health food section of my local Kroger (if I can buy it in Knoxville, TN, you can probably find it more easily than you think).

The brand I buy (the only choice at Kroger, but it's perfectly fine) comes in a round shaker container. I've also found it cheaper in bulk at health food stores, but Kroger has it!

Yeah, I think Walmart and Safeway would be the last places on earth you would find nutritional yeast! :) If no Whole Foods where you live, any local health food grocer (i.e., not GNC) would probably have it. Most towns have one - just follow the faint scent of freshly juiced wheatgrass, and the hemp-fiber clad people with dreadlocks...

You can get the yeast from a Whole Foods store. You can find one near you on their website.

I think you may have to order it from the internet or check a health food store. I've checked wal-mart and safeway in my town and no dice on the nutritional yeast but it doesn't seem to expensive if you shop for it online.

Here's a link where I found that recipe and a whole host of other cheese recipes from the 'uncheese cookbook'.

http://nomilk.com/cheese1.txt

I want to try some also :)

Aw yeah!!!!! I've been looking all over for a "cheese" recipe that used nutritional yeast. I had some "nacho cheese" dip at a raw food restaurant, and it was to die for - I asked them what was in it and they explained. The only ingredient I remembered was the nutritional yeast (not exactly raw, but that's fine with me!). Thank you so much Winters!
