Losing weight ( 40 pounds ) certainly has helped. Exercise also helps. I also take 4 Aleve a day plus use Biofreeze linament several times a day and during the night. Sleeping on my back is the best, but wake up in pain when I change position during sleep.

I do notice that a lot of sugar will cause my joints to flare up. Other than that I have not found any relief until my doctor prescribed Cataflam. It's been a miracle drug for me. When I started Cataflam I was using a walker to get around and in so much pain. 3 days after starting cataflam I went from using a walker and cane sometimes to mild jogging. For me it's been a miracle.

I get my knees x-rayed next week. They are pretty much okay unless I rub the sides of them, the petallar tendon on my right knee hurts when I do that but not when I don't (so stop doing that! :-) My left knee hurts no matter where you touch it and the one round spot where I actually fell on it/hit it when I was 26 and then again Christmas Eve 2010, is still slightly numb, only a bit of echo feeling at all so that has to be all scar something.

That knee can hurt when I'm trying to climb stairs or walking to much and weather aggravates it. I must have meniscus and ligament damage. I am constantly surprised that my knees work as well as they do. Weight has a bit to do with that; the more you weigh the stronger your legs have to be to support that weight, but, of course, that can be a tremendous strain too. I love my body though for doing as well as it can!

I'm trying to a better diet again, calcium, magnesium, potassium; more/better exercise and weigh loss.

GLUCOSEMINE AND CHONDROITIN DIDN'T WORK FOR ME EITHER. I FIND ON RAINY DAYS MY KNEES EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ARTIFICIAL STILL GIVE ME SOME PAIN. IT'S ALOT LESS THAN BEFORE I HAD THEM REPLACED THOUGH. THIS PAIN IS EASIER TO HANDLE.

I ride my recumbant bike for 1and 1/2 hours each day. Suprising this really does help. I was actually able to climb 2 flights of steps the other day without hestitating ...what a surprise that was to me. Apparently muscles develop in the legs to support the knees.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin didn't do anything for me. I am back on fish oil and vitamin D3. hoping for a change. i am willing to try the tart cherry stuff. For now, I am relying on pharmaceuticals– tramadol and a topical NSAID

I've tried the Glucosamine and Chondroitin combinations but they did not seem to do much for me and were so expensive.

Pam, I know how hard it is and as we age, (I am 71) our metabolism slows down. I was told by a very wise WW leader to limit my sodium to 1500 mg a day and when I did that, I lost 7 lbs. It is very difficult to do because everything and I mean everything has sodium in it. I didn't have a salt shaker in my house so it was a shock to me. The first day I monitored my sodium, it was at 4500mg and that blew me away. By the end of the week I had it down to 1500-1700mg and that was when I lost the 7 lbs. I read every darn label and I think I have become a sodium guru of sorts. LOL Heinz now has a no salt ketchup. It creeps up on you and you don't even know it. My friend was on BP meds and I told her to watch her sodium intake, she felt as long as she was taking the meds she could eat anything she wanted. wrong. She started watching her sodium and is now off her BP meds. She thanks me all the time. I just know it works for me. Drinking tons of water doesn't deter me from eating what I want, when I want it I just eat it, but lately I am not eating all of it,. Bev

Bev, I too need to lose pounds, but other than exercising (which I have never done and not sure I want to, except "natural" exercising), the pounds don't seem to want to come off. I have NEVER been overweight all my life, nor have I ever been "unhealthy" or in pain before. Up to 9 years ago, I was slim and healthy (5'7" 130 lb), and then I did something "for my health" that finished me off and I doubt I can undo it now. I quit smoking. Within 5 months, I was 70 pounds heavier (and NOT from overeating - I made sure of that!) and developed almost instant arthritis in my knees and feet. I stopped gaining at 215 pounds, and have simply gone up and down a few pounds here and there every few weeks. I have tried everything, and I've discovered by using the Food Tracker, that I can lose pounds only if I keep my calories to 1200 or less. That's no way to live. Any more (even 1500) and I stop losing. That's why I know exercising will probably do the trick. I'm 62 now and getting cranky - LOL - with the pain in my knees and feet, I have a hard time imaging myself exercising very hard, and even walking tends to seize my feet up after a short while. Ah well - I need to stop moaning and whining and just get on with it. I say that constantly and have never actually DONE it yet! Maybe one day.

God bless,
Pam

Hi Pam, That crunchy you hear is bone on bone and I have the same thing when I bend down and then try to get up. Stairs are a chore. I found when I go down the stairs backwards it helps the pressure on the joints. I am like you I will try all the OTC med before anything else. I too tried the Tart Cherry Juice and it did nothing for me. I have OA and my knees will freeze up on me if I stand for very long or sit a long time. What I am trying now is SAMe, jury still out. It is supposed to enhance the cartilage not for pain. I am sure that the only recourse for me is to lose weight and that is a day by day thing for me. But we can do this. Bev

I haven't post very often in this forum, and I don't know if most people on this forum have Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis? I'm not even sure which arthritis I have! LOL! But my knees were so painful and "crunchy" that I couldn't make it up my 16 stairs of my house without wanting to cry. Some days it took me forever to get up there.

I live in SW Ontario, Canada. I was in a local pharmacy in a city near me and I found a bottle of Osteomove. It was glucosamine, chondroitin (sp?) and Instaflam - all kinds of natural stuff. I took one a day for a while, and it helped a bit, but didn't have a huge effect. Then I started taking two per day and after a couple of weeks, it was wonderful! I can now walk up and down the stairs without knee pain. My hands still hurt a lot, but I think that's because I play games on the computer, and I seize them up after awhile. But I found a supplement that works! It $30 per bottle, a bit expensive, but I'd rather pay that than get a prescription from the doctor. I'm one of those who don't trust most drug companies, and I'll find my own cures before I'll take something from a prescription pad.

Has anyone found any other supplements that work well for them? I tried concentrated tart cherry juice - that did nothing for me.

God bless,
Pam

I might try the tart cherry but looks like you have to take a goodly amount if you do the actual cherries or juice:

I tried the Tart Cherry Juice and Green Tea, neither one did much for me. I think losing major weight is my only other option. Taking one day at a time. Back to wearing my pedometer and pushing for more steps every day is really helping me.

I have had plenty of luck with tart cherry capsules. They help with inflammation. You can also get it in liquid form, but you have to make sure you are getting enough of the tart cherry in whatever you buy.

There's a lot of hype out there that drinking more/special water, taking this or that nutrient or following different diets will help with arthritis pain. What have you tried? Check out this slide show from a medical perspective on various possibilities and see if you want to do your own personal test on any. I'm going to try the green tea one:

I'll let you know how it goes.
