Well Said!

Crankiness or bitchiness is GOING to happen. I think the best thing you can do is to sit down with your partner and explain to her how important it is to you to quit smoking, let her know the reasons why you want to quit smoking (if that involves having a long future with her, make sure you let her know that), and then explain to her how quitting smoking makes you feel (agitated, angry, focused on only smoking, or whatever you feel). Then tell her that you may get bitchy and that it is not directed toward her and ask her to help you when you get uber bitchy, by maybe drawing you a bath, or giving you a big hug, or helping you relax, or making a dinner. See if there is anything that she can do to help take your mind off of the crave that's causing the bitchiness.

I think the important this is communication and honesty with your partner so that she knows what will happen and ways that she might be able to get through it with you or help you get through it.

Angela this is a real tough one, you have to give yourself time and space in the beginning when you quit smoking. Being cranky is all part of the withdrawal process, my DH and I fought about the dumbest things for a good week and a half but he is understanding enough to know that its not anything he was doing just me going through a rough time. If your partner is caring, patient and loves you she will understand that a little b!tchy-ness is well worth the trouble if it means not losing you to lung cancer, heart disease, and all the rest that comes with smoking just to have you in a pleasant mood.
If it gets really bad you could try some st. johns wart, it's a natural herb used to calm the nerves.

How do you deal with the crankiness that comes with quitting, or did you feel cranky? I feel like I'm being a real B$&! when I try to quit, and that's why I picked it up again after getting through just 24 hrs. I don't want to hurt my partner and mess things up with her. My situation - I'm at home alone all day long and my partner comes home at 5, and I look forward to that all day. I work out and try to stay busy cleaning and things, but I still get cranky with her if I haven't been smoking. What to do??

I was reading some things about what happens when you quit smoking. I am the kind of person that needs to know there is a positive benefit even if I can't recognize it at the moment.

Even though I know quitting is good for me in general, I still like to know when I will start to really see changes. So I read that basically up to week three your body is still going through withdrawal, although it is not as severe as the first 1-5 days. At 3 weeks:

The hair-like cilia lining in your lungs starts to sweep out the build-up of tar and mucus, enabling you to cough it up.

I can NOT wait till I hit this point. I can just imagine how much better my body will feel once it starts to clear out some of the damage!

When I quit for 1 year and a half. I was pregnant. So i quit cold turkey. and I did it. and I did it for a year and a half. Recently I been starting to pick it up again, because Im constantly around smokers, but as of yesterday, I am done again, and again for ME its cold turkey. Allll Or Nothing. For me* if I keep smoking even 1 or 2, it will only go up, it will never go down. Remember to take deep breaths, drink lots of water, every-time you have a craving. I am doing really good even tho its only the second day, I am doing it and doin it well. I am not ever going to pick one up again, its a horrible habit to have and it keeps me from working out! I cant even laugh anymore because I'm coughing over it. SOOo GOOD LUCK to you! i KNOW you can do this! emoticon

I can't tell you how glad I am that I found this team! I truly feel that I can do this this time. My husband has yet to make this decision. We have both tried once before and failed miserably. I was so irritable, cranky, and literally in tears from withdrawals. This helpful info & suggestions are very much appreciated! The comfort of knowing that you are all here & I'm not alone! Just wanted to thank all of you in advance. I plan to do some more reading, going for a walk, and will come back tomorrow with the announcement of my "quit date" I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi. I just quit cigarette smoking today. I am chewing Nicorette gum and so far so good. I used to smoke nearly 20 to 40 cigarettes every day, such a waste of money. I'm having a craving for the smoke element, which is so wierd. But I have opened the window and now I'm breathing in clean air. For a change.
I have to make my list of things to do, but I have to stick to this too, because the habit is just too darn expensive. Thank you for your lists and information.

I'm that much closer to sticking to it!
Joy

TOP 7 SYMPTOMS OF QUITTING THE ICK STICKS!

When you quit smoking, you will experience a number of symptoms, also called the quit smoking symptoms.

It is quite natural because, your body over a longer period has become accustomed to take in poisons in the form of nicotine, tar and the like. When you quit smoking, and thereby no longer lets those toxins into the blood, the body begins a cleansing of the poison, and that is what might be called quit smoking symptoms.

The symptoms you may experience vary significantly from person to person, but it is important that you prepare yourself for the coming internal fight. The quit smoking symptoms you suffer from will give you an excuse to try to justify that you start smoking again. You must fight against this negative process and stick with your decision to stop smoking.

One thing that is important to remember before reading further, is that THIS will list the most common quit smoking symptoms, and you will most likely only be able to recognize some of them, but do not worry, it is quite normal.

1. The most normal quit smoking symptom, would be your almost irresistible urge to start smoking again, your body will almost scream for nicotine, and your internal dialogue will be divided between your desire to escape your addiction, and the desire to to stop the unpleasant symptoms.

This symptom is not so hard to get through, a little steadfastness, and you will be over the worst after the first 3-4 days.

2. You'll also find that you are a little under the weather, in the form of more frequent coughing, mild colds, and other lung and breast related symptoms, it is again quite natural, since your body is cleansing, and restoring its natural functions. In addition to your immune system, being hard at work trying to purge the poison from your body.

3. Your bowels may also provide a little sound from within, as a symptom of you quitting smoking, you may even feel constipated. You have to understand that smoking affects many parts of the body, cleaning out the poisons that smoking have added to your body, have meant it has had to relocate a lot of energy that could otherwise have been spent on many other things, therefore many functions in the body will have suffered from smoking.

4. You will most likely also experience an increased appetite, and a greater desire to stuff your mouth, and if you absolutely have to give into the temptation, look for fibrous food, coarse bread, nuts, grains and prunes could be fine eating, and remember during your quit smoking period, to drink plenty of water, all things will help ease your quit smoking symptoms.

5. Headaches can also be a quit smoking symptom, it is often followed by a lack of focus and concentration, and you will find that you easily become irritated.

Experts believe that headache is due to changes in the blood / oxygen ratio simultaneously with a change of blood sugar levels, caused by the lack of nicotine, all changes the brains normal environment. In time, these levels will return to a normal state, so you may simply arm yourself with patience, plenty of water, and take advantage of medication against the pain for a while

6. Nicotine is a stimulant, and it can affect the way your brain works. When you stop smoking, it may cause a number of changes in the way you are as a person and in how you conduct yourself.

You may also experience insomnia as a result of you quitting smoking, and thereby also feel tired during the day.

7. Irritability, depression, lack of concentration, restlessness, boredom, anger, aggression and general discomfort are all potential quit smoking symptoms, you should be aware of. The good news is that you will only suffer from them for a short period of time, perhaps one or two months.

If your quit smoking symptoms are about to take control over you and you feel you are falling back towards smoking, you should try to remember that your stopping smoking is the biggest single step forward in the direction of better health, you can do. You are not losing a friend, when you quit smoking, even though it may feel like a great deprivation in the beginning, you are actually separating yourself from one of your worst enemies.

This enemy slowly but surely works towards sending you earlier in the grave... Remember it, and hold on to your decision to quit smoking, regardless of your quit smoking symptoms

emoticon info! Thanks for sharing Sandi!

Even this late in my quit, I still think I substitute with food when I am stressed. I need to take off with that advice of a 30 minute walk each day!

Why do people gain weight when they quit smoking?

Smoking increases metabolism slightly:
•Smoking burns up to 200 calories a day in a heavy smoker
•Because smoking burns calories, metabolism is boosted (increased) slightly
•Nicotine is an appetite suppressant
When you quit smoking, a gain of between 5 and 10 pounds during the first few months of cessation is normal. If your eating habits have remained the same as they were when you smoked, you can easily shed this small gain with a brisk, 30 minute walk daily.

Why do I want to eat more?
Smoking cessation throws our bodies into shock initially. Increased appetite is a side effect of quitting tobacco for most people. One or more of the following reasons may be at play:
•Cigarettes as an appetite suppressant
Smokers often avoid between meal snacking by lighting up. Nicotine is a stimulant, and may also interfere with the release of the hormone insulin. Insulin controls glucose levels in the blood. When this function is blocked, a person will become slightly hyperglycemic, and as a result, the body and brain may slow down the hormones and other signals that trigger feelings of hunger.
•Food as a replacement for smoking
Early on in a person's quit, the urge to smoke is frequent and uncomfortable. It's natural to look for something to ease the discomfort, and food is often used as a replacement. Not only does it fill the void left by the cigarette, food can be an emotional comfort, easing the pain of withdrawal.
Studies have shown that women are at greater risk than men for returning to smoking as a way to avoid weight gain. Understanding what happens to our bodies when we quit smoking, and what we can do to alleviate discomforts in constructive ways that do not involve weight gain will help you stay on track.

What can I do to avoid gaining weight when I quit smoking?
There are a number of choices you can make to minimize weight gain:
Exercise
Because quitting smoking slows the metabolism, getting some form of daily exercise is very important. To combat excess weight, shoot for at least a half hour of exercise, 5 days a week. It doesn't have to be a high intensity aerobic workout - a brisk 30 minute walk around your neighborhood will work wonders. Exercise is also a great way to beat cravings to smoke. If you're having a bad day, get out for a walk. It'll clear your mind and improve your attitude.

Healthy Snacks
Put snacks together ahead of time so that when the munchies hit, you've got good food choices within easy reach:

Mikal....guard that quit with your life, that nicodemon would love you to lose the war. Drink tons of ice water, go for walks...write a list of things you will do when the craves hit. Once you are through the 1st 72 hours, you are done with the physical withdrawal. After that it is all MENTAL. Believe me sometimes you feel mental too, lol!!! Today is my quit date. I'm going cold turkey and have to do it. I have smoked for 17 years and I know it is killing me. I feel it everywhere and I know I have to quit now! Just wanted to say that this seems like a very helpful team. This is the first time I have posted anything anywhere on here too! Hoping I can figure out how to navigate through this and use all of the great information that people seem to post. Thanks for being so helpful and supportive. I know I need this group and I'm looking forward to the positive interaction!

July 15, 2010 was my quit date but I slipped up Friday night and had a couple of drags off of a friends cigarette but no more smoking since. Would you consider that enough of a slip where I should change my new quit date? I don't really think so but I wanted your opinions?

I have tried the patch in the past but it gave me a rash within a couple hours no matter where I stuck it. I think I will invest in either the gum or lozengers to keep my mouth busy..LOL Wish me luck and I will go look for that link on the easy way to do it.

Hi Babsy...it is hard to resist because us smokers are addicts. Plain and simple we are addicted to nicotine and this is our drug of choice. I have quit a hundred times. I am hoping this is my forever quit!!! Read the links on the team page. There is a ton of information there. There is also an e-book "Quit smoking the easy way" by Alan carr link. I also frecommend you be active on the team. I was active for about 6 months before my quit. I had a plan in place and set a date and I did it. I have been quit for over a year now. I used the patch and a ton of cinnamon candy!! The first 3 days ar ethe hardest and that is because those are the days that your body goes through withdrawal. After that it is a head game. Take it one day at a time!!!! This is a very supportive, fun and intimate team. You CAN do this! emoticonemoticonemoticonemoticonemoticonemoticonemoticon

Stop smoking for you & no on else. Keep the promise you've made to yourself. Reward yourself along the way, because each step taken toward quitting is a big accomplishment.

Fight the urge whenever it comes. Turn your attention to the positive reasons you quit in the first place. Nicodemon will try to keep your attention. Don't give in, don't cave to the crave!!!!!

QuitTipofTheDay!

It's YOUR Quit

Once an addict, always an addict, they say. This means abstinence is the only effective treatment for smoking addiction. Remember that nicotine replacement methods such as the patch, Wellbutrin, etc can help you to quit, but they can't KEEP you quit. They are simply one part of the quitting process- the beginning. There is no 'cure' for smoking, just abstinence, one day at a time. We continue our treatment on the mental, emotional, and behavioral levels for the rest our lives.

9 Ways to Reduce Stress

Stress is unavoidable and it may be more common for workers in today's uncertain economic climate. It's your natural response to the challenges and changes of life. You do have a choice in how you deal with stress, though.

1.)Keep your sense of humor. There's usually something to laugh about no matter how bad things are.
2.)Get regular exercise. This will improve your fitness for dealing with all of life's physical and mental challenges. It is also a good way to shift your focus away from things which upset you or make you angry.
3.)Eat right to maintain your health.
4.)Get enough sleep.
5.)Be aware that alcohol and caffeine add to your stress level over the long run, so cut back or quit.
6.)Do the most important things first.
7.)Talk to a trusted person about your problems.
8.)Learn some relaxation techniques
9.)Look on the bright side. Optimism is a good antidote for stress.

Hi LaDonna~I will try to answer these questions the best I can, most of all I will answer them honestly!

1.)Personally, I think all of the first three days are equally hard. It is after the 3rd day that you are officially physically withdrawn from the drug! Maybe day 3 is more difficult because most of us know after that it is all habit that we need to change! Habits are incredibly difficult to change. They can be changed though!!

2.)The day you actually quit is day one! Count your hours for your official withdrawal time. I'm sure none of it is exact but pretty close!

Sign up on quit net! They will send you daily e-mails, keep track of your quit days, how much money yoiu have saved, how much time you have added to you life, etc.!!!

Hope I have helped a little LaDonna, I think everyones quit is unique! Anyone can quit if they want to quit more than anything else! I smoked for 35 yrs. and have been quit now for 7 moths.....226 days to be exact, but who's counting? emoticonemoticonemoticon

I'm new here and I have a couple of questions.
1. I have read a couple of different places that the 3rd day is the worst? If this is true, why?
2. How do you count your quit day? I had my last smoke on April 19 at 9:30 p.m but my first full day quit was April 20th which should I count? Thanks alot for your help and support. SO FAR SO GOOD (most of the time, the last evening was pretty rough but I made it through, a little worried about this evening.

Thanks again

Be kind to yourself, yet be tough with yourself. No excuses allowed. Believe that you will accomplish this goal because you choose to. Choice is everything. Think before you act.

Say to yourself every morning "I choose not to smoke today" and carry that thought with you all day.

Thanks Roni and Sandi,

This is great advice! I am going to try the candy and gum today while driving. I don't really want to smoke then, but I keep finding myself reaching for icksticks out of habit.

Hi Dawn

You did the best thing you changed your habit. I just changed my habits and I found I didn't get very many cravings, but when I did get a craving I did deep breathing, drank ice water and sucked on hard candy. I liked to smoke while I was driving, so now while I am driving I chew gum. After dinner or any meal I stay seated for a while so the urge you have to smoke after you eat wouldn't turn into a craving. Hang in there you are doing great and I have faith in you. Hugs Roni

Hi Dawn~
I totally changed my morning routine around. I was actually even afraid to have coffee because that is when i enjoyed my first ickstick!!! Substitute the old habit with a new one. that is what I found worked the best for me. I also started each morning with an ice cold bottle of water. I sucked on hard cinnamon candy and stayed clear of anything that reminded me of smoking. When the crave hits, take a deep breath, drink water or juice and find something to divert your attention away. Remember the crave only lasts 3 minutes usually! Hope this helps you!emoticon

Hi all! This morning was a little tough, as I usually enjoyed my first puff of the day the most, but I changed my schedule to not stay outside with the dogs. I just hopped back inside after letting them out. Does anyone have any morning tips that have worked for them? Now that I am over that hurdle, I am back to feeling great, though. Patches are giving me strength!

Most of you will find that there aren't very many cravings. Mistaking habit for craving happens a great deal of the time. Break the habit, change some things that you usually did like after dinner stay seated for a while. When you are driving chew gum. We all had times when we smoked every day, change the way you do things and I bet alot of you will realize that they weren't cravings at all, it was just habit. Hugs Roni

Quit Tip Of The Day

Will Smoking Change That Situation?

Sometimes former smokers will feel a strong urge to have a cigarette. Often the trigger will be a difficult emotional time. If that should ever happen to you, ask yourself, "Will smoking change the situation? What's happened in the past when I allowed myself to smoke just one? Especially when things are emotional, it's easy to slip back to smoking your usual amount. Remind yourself of the things you've managed to go through without a cigarette. Don't risk your new smoke-free life by giving in to temptation.

Since you are stuck where you are during your cravings try visualizing the craving getting smaller and smaller and each time a new one comes, KNOW that it is weaker than the last one. They only last about 3 minutes.
You can do this. YOU are stronger than this. You can last 3 minutes until the craqving passes. And when it does..You'll feel amazing! This really strengthens your will and resolve and makes it a lot harder to pick up smoking again. You won't want to have to fight the good fight again if you do!

I don't know where you smoked outside, but what if....you made that spot something different, like planted some beautiful flowers or hung a bird feeder so it looks a little different? I used to go out on my deck out back. First thing I did was get rid of the ashtrays and hung plants and bird feeders. At first I just walked right down the stairs but now I enjoy it, only I enjoy it differently! Being outside is so healthy and you'll be able to do that soon!!!! Good luck to you!

When I have an urge to smoke I definitely do not go outside as that was where I smoked, but it does help to just walk into another room. Usually I can find something there, no matter how small that can or needs to be done. Right now I am in a dilema as I taking an online class for work and it is very involved. It requires alot of printing which means I have to stay right there. I get bored with this process so I am tempted to go out, but because I do have to stay put am kind of held hostage by the machine. I am between a rock and a hard place, but I won't go out as that is giving into temptation.
