Workout Motivation Tips

Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training sent this email about what to do to keep yourself motivated to workout even when you don’t feel like it.

There will be days (everyday?) when you don’t feel like doing your workout.

Sometimes you don’t want to get out of bed.( I MZsassy felt like this today)

Sometimes you don’t want to leave your office because you feel like there are too many deadlines (but this is when you need a workout the most!).

Sometimes you don’t want to end story time with the kids only to head down to the basement gym.

It even happens to me.



But I knew how I’d feel like a million bucks after the workout.

And in the end, I know I can’t let myself become “soft” and start skipping workouts. I have to lead by example.

But if you are set on achieving a goal, then when it’s workout time, come heck or high water you’ve got to bear down and do the job.

Workout Motivation Tips
1) Reward yourself. Finish your workout and treat yourself to a magazine, a TV show, some extra time with your family, some new songs for your IPOD, or even a little extra time for yourself.

2) Or set up a punishment for missing workouts. Skip the workout, put $20 into a jar to spend on home repairs. Make sure your spouse controls the jar.

3) Review your goals everyday and every night. Keeping your goals fresh in your mind will help you stay on track.

4) Realize that the hardest part of the workout is often getting your butt to the gym. Once you get 5 minutes into the workout, you will be over the hump. So tell yourself, “I’ll just go in and do 1 set of the first 2 exercises, then I can go”. Next thing you know, you’ll have done the entire workout.

5) Visualize yourself doing a great workout and finishing strong. Get yourself mentally prepared and you will literally have better workouts each time.

6) Crank the tunes. Seriously, nothing motivates like music.

7) Get social support. If you have a workout partner, you’ll feel like crap if you let them down. Or become accountable to everyone in the Turbulence Training workout forums…if you don’t post your workouts, they’ll track you down and demand to know why you’ve fallen off track! So online or offline, get everyone on your side!

Sometimes getting healthier means making a major investment, whether that means putting in serious time at the gym or buying a bulk supply of bean sprouts. LOL

BUT sometimes you can make the BIGGEST strides toward a healthier lifestyle with the smallest steps. Check out these minor investments now and watch them pay huge dividends in your journey to a healthier you in the future.

1) When you get out of bed stand up and stretch your hamstrings for 30 seconds. Increase flexibility by 27% in 6 weeks.

2) At the office walk to your coworker's offices instead of sending an e-mail. More than 1 pound of weight lost per year from the added calorie burn. Plus, reduce your blood pressure!

3) At lunch swap your ham sandwich for tuna! Reduce the risk of heart disease and help raise your good cholesterol to help clean your arteries.

4) At the gym, pedal the stationary bike with one leg. Sounds hard, but it will tone those hamstrings. Pedal with 1 leg for 60 seconds, then switch. Then spin easily using both legs for 30 seconds. Repeat this 6-8 times.

5) Before dinner have a snack! (who figured?) A 4 pound weight loss in a year. Eat 1/2 oz of a healthy fat, such as nuts or avocado, 8 minutes before a meal. You'll feel full longer and eat less!

Just a few tips that can be done in 60 seconds or less for a total health makeover!

What do you appreciate and what do you ignore? Is any day less precious because, in your mind, “nothing special happened?” For some reason, it’s hard to be impressed with anything these days. Once you take something for granted, you also take the life out of it. When nothing is “special”, boredom and gloom aren’t far behind. Look around where you’re sitting right now, and try to see it for the first time, like a child would. Think about the human potential that created the stuff in the room. We all know how important exercise is to our health. We all know we should be doing it, but we allow ourselves “outs” with what we consider justifiable excuses. You can excuse yourself out of anything if you keep listening to yourself long enough. You can let those rationalizations make sense if you try. But I have come to a personal conclusion, a motto of sorts: I will do what I need to do, in order to do what I want to do. I want to encourage others to do what they need to do to be healthy. I want to encourage you to stay in the fight and not give into the excuses. Nike still has the best excuse-buster I can think of: Just Do It! The fight will be on again tomorrow morning. Same time, same place. Wish me luck—no, wish me determination—and I’ll do the same for you! After all, we are in this fight together.

Have you ever thought about the connection between happiness and good health? Most of us would probably agree that there is a connection, but many of us who feel unhappy don't want to take the time to build a foundation of good health. 1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants..
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy

When you've eaten too much and you can't write it down,

I met this guy and he has a motto he lives by every day. He said,
"Listen carefully and live by these 4 rules:
Drink, Steal, Swear and Lie."

I was shaking my head 'no,' but he then told me to
listen while he explained his four rules. Here they are:

This is so true, and I just love it. I'm also willing to do what it takes to reach my goals. When I first started my lifestyle change, friends & family used to pop up while I was exercising, or right before I started, trying to get me to do what they wanted to do. But now they know better. Because I made it clear, that I'm doing what's healthy and best for me, so they can join me, or wait until I'm finished. I hated to be rude, but people that are not changing their lifestyle, are only supportive when it's convenient for them. So I keep the faith, stay focused, and when I need extra support, I turn to my SPARK FRIENDS.
