To Lose Weight, Eat Like a Kid Again
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, start eating like a child.
Before you conclude that I'm insane, consider these scenarios: a three-year-old child walking down the street with ice cream running down his arm from the half-eaten cone clutched in his sticky little fist; a two-year-old playing with (but not eating) a piece of her own birthday cake; a six-year-old who'd rather go out and play with his friends after dinner than wait for dessert.

What these children have in common is that they're paying attention to what their bodies, not their minds, are telling them. They've had ENOUGH ice cream, cake, and dinner to fill them up, and now they want to go do other things. On the other hand, when adults have had enough to eat, instead of listening to their tummies, they tune in to the insidious tape loops in their heads that say things like "Food is money don't waste it" and "Birthdays only come once a year."

If this sounds like you, my advice is to replace your self-destructive tape loop with one that's more positive. For example, remind yourself that the treat you push away today will be available to you tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day so why not save it for when you really want it?

Turkey & Squash Soup
PREP TIME
35 minutes COOK TIME

You can also make this with diced cooked turkey, adding it near the end. Serve with lime wedges for squeezing into each bowl.
Ingredients:

2 teaspoons canola oil
2 leeks, trimmed, thoroughly cleaned and chopped (3 1/2 cups)
1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded and chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 1/2 pounds butternut squash (2 medium), peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 pound turkey cutlets, cut into 1/2-by-2-inch strips
2 cups frozen corn kernels
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
Salt & freshly ground pepper

Preparation:
Heat oil in a large heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add leeks and pepper; cook, stirring often until the vegetables begin to soften, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute more.
Stir in broth, squash, thyme and cumin; cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes.
Add turkey and corn; return the broth to a simmer. Simmer until the turkey is just cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. Add lime juice and crushed red pepper. Gently warm the soup until heated through. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Hungarian Apple Soup

This savory apple soup for two gets body from Yukon Gold potatoes and a touch of heat from paprika. Float some cocktail shrimp or a mound of lump crabmeat in each bowl to make it a main course.

Makes 2 servings, about 1 1/2 cups each

ACTIVE TIME: 20 minutes

TOTAL TIME: 35 minutes

EASE OF PREPARATION: Easy

2 teaspoons canola oil
1 medium tart apple, peeled and finely chopped
3/4 cup diced peeled Yukon Gold potato
1/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion
1/4 cup thinly sliced celery, plus leaves for garnish
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon dried sage
Pinch of paprika, preferably hot Hungarian
Freshly ground pepper to taste
1 14-ounce can reduced-sodium chicken broth
3 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream

1. Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add apple, potato, onion and celery; cook, stirring often, until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in salt, sage, paprika and pepper; cook for 30 seconds. Pour in broth and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat, cover, and gently simmer until the potato is tender when pierced with a fork, 10 to 15 minutes.
2. Transfer the soup to a large blender or food processor, add sour cream and process until smooth. (Use caution when pureeing hot liquids.) Garnish with celery leaves, if desired.

Berry Dessert Nachos
Bake cinnamon tortilla chips until crispy, then top with berries and low-fat cream topping.

3 8-inch plain or whole wheat flour tortillas
1 tablespoon butter, melted

3/4 cup fat-free or light dairy sour cream
3/4 cup frozen light whipped dessert topping, thawed
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 cups fresh raspberries and/or blackberries
2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted
1 tablespoon grated semisweet chocolate

1. Preheat oven to 400 degree F. In a small bowl, stir together sour cream, dessert topping, vanilla, and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon. Cover and chill while preparing tortillas.

2. Lightly brush both sides of each tortilla with melted butter. In a small bowl, stir together sugar and 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon; sprinkle over tortillas. Cut each tortilla into 8 wedges; arrange on two ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until crisp. Cool completely.


3. To serve, divide tortilla wedges among six dessert plates. Top with raspberries and/or blackberries and sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with almonds and grated chocolate. Makes 6 servings.

Angel Wings

At the ending of the day when I'm weary
After a waterfall of tears have all been cried
And I'm feeling like the skies will always be dreary
Nothing's there to fill the emptiness inside.

I lay my head upon my favourite pillow
Just close my eyes to block all the sorrow
wonderin' where I'll ever find the strength inside-
to do it all again- tomorrow.

And then I feel it-
inside me.
I feel it-
around me.
Like a gentle hand, just wiped away the tears-
and held me close to wash away my fears.

It's you, my angel, watching over me.
And I know no matter what tomorrow brings,
You'll be here to wrap me in your angel wings-
your lovin' angel wings.

The sun comes up, it's time to face the day
and I think that things are going to be all right-
But, as the day wears on my nerves begin to fray-
I feel the hollowness that creeps in every night.

And like clockwork all the tears begin to fall
As I look at my reflection in the glass-
the eyes looking back at me make me feel small-
