If we are in town on Fathers Day we will do Man Up. My DD and I went to visit my dad in Florida last year and may do the same this year. Have to figure logistics with DH.

We are doing the MS Walk this Sunday - is anyone else going to be there?

Just posted a number of races/walks in the Pittsburgh area. Will continue to post more as I find them. Let me know if you are aware of anything we should post.

If you sign up for anything, let us know here, so we can meet up with fellow Sparkers!

We have 2 events set up on SparkPittsburgh.

Just a Short Run - March 26th - there is a fee to register. There are a number of different options - walking and running and various distances. We have a SparkTeam set up for this event and are planning a get together afterward.

Walk MS - April 10th - no fee to register for this walk. We have a 'Spark Team' set up in honor of fellow Sparker LYNNANN43, who has MS. Join our team and walk to raise funds for a great cause.

I just signed up for the Race for Joe 5K Run/Walk in Franklin Park this Saturday, April 3rd.

The info about it was in the race pack from Just a Short Race. I figure this will be my last running event for a while because of my surgery next Wednesday.

Another walk/run for those in the Fayette County area is the Mount Summit Challenge. You walk/run up the Summit. I did it 2 years ago. It was quite invigorating.

I'm also going to run as many 5k's as I can fit into my training. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up with some fellow Sparkers along the way. The half marathon is really a stretch for me, but I decided I needed the challenge. Worse case...I'll be more fit. Best case, I will also be on my way to my ultimate goal...the full marathon.

This is a great idea. I was a member of this Pittsburgh group before but moved away so I unjoined. Now I'm back and just checked out your thread.
I too am interested in walk/running and eventually running a bunch of 5K's this year. I've never done the race for the cure but I hope to this year. I don't have a team yet. I ran a 5k in my 20's but now I'm 50 so its gonna be totally different so you could say I'm a beginner. I currently live near Saxonburg.
There's a few 5K's I want to do before the race for the cure. One is the Boyce Park 5k. April 25th.

Here is a link I found for many others in the area. Not sure if you are familiar with this group.

For the slightly less ambitious, there's the MS Walk on April 26 that starts at Point State Park. I know it's not a run, but a 5 mile walk or a 1 mile accessible route. I'd certainly appreciate the support since I've been diagnosed with MS 5 years ago. Thanks all!

Good luck and have fun ladies! My daughter will be there with my MIL and SILs. This is the 2nd year for them to go.

I just wanted to mention that I signed up to do a 5K on Memorial Day. It's in Greensburg that starts/ends at Lynch Field. My whole family will be doing this with me so I'm getting pumped. I've tried a 5K a few times on the treadmill last week. I just hope I can run it. There are a ton of hills in Greensburg!!

The Race for the Cure is a huge event, they said something about 30,000 people this year! That's insane! But I would still like to maybe meet up with you both at some point. I'm not sure what our shirts look like this year, but I will let you know. I know our team usually meets by the gazebo across from Phipps.

Yay!

Okay, so I hope to be able to meet you two even if briefly at the event. It's a big event and I've never been there, so I don't know about crowds. But I know what I'm wearing--a bright green DISboards W.I.S.H. shirt--so I should be easy to find!

Celina: I'm doing the Cleveland 1/2, but it looks like I might be doing a RW again. Right now I have shin splints, so I'm not sure what kind of stress I want to put on my legs at this point.

And Courtney, I understand totally about the knees. My DH and I have wonky knees, and it makes training difficult. I figure I'll be a walker again in my long-term future (and I enjoy walking events very much).

I'll be at the Race for the Cure as well, as an untimed 5k walker with my work team. Hooray! I'm not a runner, I envy those of you that are. I'd like to get into it, but I'm so nervous about my knee. I injured it in elementary school playing basketball, and it's never been the same...it definitely tells me when it's going to rain!

I was planning on running all sorts of races this year, and I"m really bummed that I have been injured. However, I'm in for Race for the Cure, as a walker. I'l walk fast for the Cure! I'm doing it as part of a team through my husband's job.

I'm also in for the Cleveland 1/2 marathon, but unfortunately I won't be running that one either. I've changed my status to walk the 10K, while my husband runs the 10K and my friend runs the 1/2. I'll be the designated driver since I won't be as tired/sore in proportion to those guys.

There certainly are a lot of outdoor training events here in PGH to keep us all busy!

Just didn't want Heather to think I was ignoring the race/walk challenge.

These aren't local races, but I thought some people might like to know that I've registered for the Cleveland 1/2 Marathon in May and the Disney Full Marathon in January. The Cleveland race has a 5K, 10K, 1/2 and full, and at least some of these events are open to walkers, if you're interested.I believe most if not all events are still open. The Disney marathon is still open, as I registered last night, but the 1/2 is nearing capacity; it's a great event with lots of spectacle and a slow sweep time (16 minute miles) if you a walker.

As soon as I work out the details I'll be signing up for the Race for the Cure as a non-timed walker. If there's anyone who'd like to join me (and possibly my family) feel free to post or email me!

I intend to sign up for some other local events once I figure out how those events will work, or not, with my training.

The challenge is this: Sign up for one, just one, any one of the races listed under the Events thread. Whether you are an avid runner, a beginner or a walker...WE WANT YOU!! Once you have signed up post what race you have registered for here. If you are interested in more than one that is great!!

Once we find out who is registered for what we can get groups together, if interested, to meet at the race events.

On the banister of life, may all the splinters be pointing the other way!
