My HRM is very precise and depending on which class I take its usually around 560 calories per one hour class. Each person is going to be a bit different because it will depend on your age, weight, how much exertion you're using, etc, HRM's are programmed based on your personal info and that is whats used along with your actual heart rate during your exercise sessions.

What food program are you following along with the zumba? How many times per week are you doing a zumba class?

I have been doing Zumba for about 1 year now and I am down 50 lbs. I am addicted. I have used the zumbacalorie counter for Zumba but I am curious how many calories you burn during Zumba Tone.

thise HRM things dont always work specialy if your doing zumba ..zumba is very different from just walking or running whitch is what the HRM moniters are more intended for ...trust in the zumba calorie results i went from 197 pounds to 146 in a short period of time doing nothing but zumba ..you are on the right track :)

I went back and forth between hrm, fitbit, and the nike fuel band. I ended up ordering the fitbit so hopefully when it gets here I will know how hard I am working doing zumba and hopefully keep me motivated.

I used my Timex heart rate monitor (with chest monitor) on both my Zumba Exhilarate DVD and my class at the YMCA. The DVD had me burning 680 calories and the physical class had me burning 920 calories. My Zumba instructor beat Beto! emoticon

I have a pretty intense class. I know I'm burning more than the 382 that it gives me on the fitness calculator. I don't need a HR monitor. My heart rate is fairly low even when I'm exercising hard and I can even sing during the hardest workout. I figure I'm working hard if I'm sweating and I can't get myself to move any faster. If I'm burning more than 382 that it says all the better. I also swim and walk a lot. emoticon

I'd say that sounds pretty accurate. I wear a HR monitor, and I consistently burn about 650 calories doing 45-50 minutes of Zumba 2 on the Wii.

I was truly wondering the same thing. Can it be true that one can burn that many calories doing 45min of cardio. I have been doing zumba2 on the wii lately, and was amazed by the projected calories burned..but..is it accurate? Does anyone know?I am averaging around 500 calories for 50 min of zumba.

In it to win it.

It depends on your intensity. I burn between 500 and 1,000 calories when I do Zumba.

I am struggling just to hit 300 calories in one hour and I am using an HRM. I am 5' 6" and 255lbs. Am I doing something wrong? Is the HRM wrong? I can't imagine hitting 500+ calories in one hour of Zumba.

I tried the calorie calculator at that site www.zumbacalories.com and compared it to what my HRM said it was very close. I think if you have a heart rate monitor that's going to be the most accurate method, but failing that that site looks very good

Hey girls, This is my 1st post to Zumba. I'm new to Zumba. I just started last week and two girls in my class have the watches to tell you how many calories you burn. One day they were from 1100-1200 cal in the 1 hr class. The other day it was 1,000 cal.

I've been back to Zumba for almost a month and a half now.
I consistently burn between 900-1200cals a session. My heart rate is always pretty high during, but I believe it's evening out lately.
Yesterday it was 1067. Definitely pleased :).

The instructors at my gym usually burn between 500-600cals. That's how you know it's a fantastic workout. Despite their bodies being used to frequent activity and their good shape, they still burn a heaping helping!

Hey Zumba fanatics!

The number of calories you burn while zumbaing depends not only on your body size and energy level but the type of class you attend. I've been to classes with different instructors and some of them are WAY more intense than others. This is probably the reason for the big variation (400 to 750 cal an hour).

If any of you are in DC, I highly recomend Zumba Extreme at the YWCA with Sara, she will kick your butt!

Love my Zumba classes at 24hr fitness. However, my bodybugg never shows me burning more than 350 calories. I feel like I am working hard - why am I burning so many fewer calories than other folks? I do agree with the comment that finding something you love is more important than calories burned, but I would like to get the most out of it I can!

good luck for your classes. I know it took me at least 3 times, if not 4, to really get into doing it. It takes time to learn the steps and arm movements - but super great fun. So hang in there for 3 to 4 sessions and you will find it feels great. Take a towel for sure - you sweat plenty - well I do.

I'm excited. I'm going to my first Zumba class on Tuesday. I'm hoping it will help me get to my first goal a little quicker by burning more calories than I am used to. Both of my daughters will be doing it with me (13 & 22) so it should be that much more fun!!

The bodybugg is amazing. I ordered mine thru Costco. Got is for $179 with a year subscription. I had an issue with my first bugg, when I called Apex to exchange it, they wanted me to wait 3 days to get an email authorizing me to exchange it, then ship it back, then they would ship me another! Costco took my return no questions asked and I just ordered another one through them. If you guys check out the bodybugg forum, they list a couple other bodybugg like options. Good luck all!

I'm thinking of getting the body bugg to accurately count calories being burned. Just did my first Zumba class and was alot of fun but more difficult to jump into compared to other classes.
Anyway, question, when you save 40 min, 60 min, 20 min of Zumba...are you countingthe class as a whole including cool down and warm up or just the Zumba part. For the most part of the class that I took, it was pretty much Zumba from the start.
Thanks

I just did about 30 minutes of the basic steps, and started to do the basic 20 min workout but got a side cramp. Guess I need to do some serious stretching tonight and have a go again tomorrow! It's fun, and I love learning new dance moves!

Hi Mo! I got my Bodybugg from 24hrfitness.com and I paid $199 for it. That sale is good through the 31st of January, and right now it comes with a free watch digital display (which is normally $100) and 6 months of free online support and one coaching session. I LOVE my BB I use it everyday. It is so informative, really makes you concious about what you are eating and how much you are moving thats for sure. Let me know if you want more info about it.

I'm in Houston and go to the "Latin Impact" class at LA Fitness--which is very similar to Zumba. I would think all the big gyms offer it.

Another great thing about Zumba is the calories burned, but if you really like an exercise, you make it a routine. That's the long term benefit!

This is so true! Everytime I do Zumba I burned 600-700 calories and loving it because I don't feel that I am exercising at all! Does anyone who lives in Houston can recommend a Zumba class somewhere? What if I buy the DVD would that work the same?

Hi Everyone......

I was wondering for the Polar measurement is this something you wear all day long or just for your workouts?

I am interested in purchasing one but i would love it to be optional that i can wear all day if i want to see how many calories i burn that day plus the work out.

I absolutly love Zumba. I love the fact that I can do it at home with my little one. She is only two and gets so excited when I say, "Do you want to do Zumba?" I feel so energized after the workout. I really love the Zumba live and flat abs workout. I only do it every other day, but I feel a huge difference. emoticon

Consistency will also burn more calories. So if you find something you love, you are more likely to stick with it and do it more often, thus burning more calories. WooHoo! Zumba baby!

I consistently burn between 4-500. I weigh 120-something (depending), but I REALLY CRANK IT OUT in Zumba. I think folks who do more than 500 are ALSO really cranking it out & are probably a lot bigger (see more weight, more calories burned principle).

I have to agree. It all depends on how much you weigh for the calories you burn. The more you weigh the more you burn.

I think the calories burned are highly individual depending on weight and what kind of shape you are in. Wow, 1000+, you must have worked really hard!

I was thinking about how far we have come from Jane Fonda. I showed Zumba to my mother who is in her 70s and she told me that she used to go to the gym and the teacher would lead them through exercises and no one even thought of putting music on.

Thanks, that is what I thought, I could be a lot more graceful if I didn't have those clunkers on. Think I'll go down to DSW and see what they have.

Welcome to the team! I started out with cross trainers also and found they didn't work - too hard to pivot which killed my knees and ankles. I picked up a pair of Nike Shox dance sneakers - they have a smooth bottom with a pivot point and also provide great support. I know several people wear Capezio dance sneakers and like them a lot. There was a thread about shoes either on this board or at the other zumba team and it gave lots of great footwear suggestions. Welcome!

Hi guys, I just joined this team. I got my Zumba DVDs yesterday, did the intro one and this am did the Cardio Party. It was fun! I burned 321 cals which is about what I burn in 40 mins of treadmill or elliptical, but so much more fun! I can imagine that I would burn more in a class in front of a mirror. I have to bug my YMCA to add zumba classes. But I got the basic set and then the extra 4 DVDs so I won't get bored. I did not find them cheaper anywhere, I ended up buying them from the Zumba site. They were asking for more on Ebay and Amazon! Also, on the website you can return them and pay in monthly payments so it doesn't feel so bad.

Anyway, I am going to rotate (according to their suggestion) cardio party and the sculpt one and see how it goes. I did it in my kid's bedroom in sneakers but that is carpeted so it wasn't great so I moved to my dining room which is hard wood. Tomorrow I will do it on the ceramic tile in my entrance. I know that they say to wear sneakers but I think a lite pair of work out shoes would be even better. Puma and Sketchers have something out that is not as stiff and heavy as a cross trainer. Anyone have suggestion. Thoughts? I love to dance and this was great! Now to sell the Core Rhythms DVD that I bought before I discovered Zumba!!!!!!

I have a Mio & I consistently burn between 450 - 500 calories -- but then, I started counting AFTER I got very fit by doing Zumba -- so someone who is un-fit or heavy or a man will be higher than 500 -- also your HRM cannot detect subtle things that probably influence calorie burn significantly! My Mio also says I work almost the whole hour between 85 - 90% of my max heart rate . . . so I'm just not so sure how accurate those things are (although I LURVE my Mio -- bought it for $30 @ Costco!)

At first I was burning a lot of calories on it, and I was just doing the basic learning CD. Now that I have "moved on" I seem to be burning steadily around 350/400.
I have wondered, if that has to do with the timing (when I work out/ after eating etc) or if I just don't burn as many calories.
I have a friend that burns 800 calories on the elliptical and I only burn about 300 there.

So, I think maybe I am either not putting enough effort into it, or just don't burn much????

SpecialK - I was wondering the same thing. I know that if I jump around more, shake my hips more, or shimmy more I seem to burn more calories. The Zumba ads say that Zumba burns 700 or more calories. So I can't help but feel that there's something wrong with me.

What all causes the change in calories burned? Sometimes I think I should burn more, but I dont....

Normally on Sunday I get really lazy. But today I decided to try the Zumba toning and sculpting DVD. I burned 337 calories for the 43 minutes. That's pretty good considering, I thought it would be just toning. It turned out to be cardio too. I imagine that once I get more familiar with the routine, I can burn more.

In class yesterday I burned 500 calories instead of my usual 450 calories. I was standing near the front, watching myself in the mirror, and putting a lot of effort/energy into it!

Hi Christi!!!!

Yes a live Zumba class is so great!!!! but the DVD's are also great! - in my opinion, I burn more calories in a live class :)

Filming the video was super fun, but lots of people.

I did the Zumba Live DVD today for the first time and burned 450 calories. I have to say that I prefer going to my zumba class, but the DVD is a good option when I can't make it to class.

I saw Dorie on the video...Yay!!! I'm sure it must have been fun making the video.

I am still a Zumba beginner. But, I have been burning between 300-600 calories in my sessions. And, I am still only doing the basic steps and/or hte 20 min workout.

Anyone else using a heart rate monitor, how many calories burned are you seeing?

I just got the Polar F4 watch a week ago and I've started playing around with it. Last Friday I went to a 45 minute zumba class and burned 450 calories. About a week ago on March 31, I went to a 1 hour 50 min Master Zumba class and burned 1047 calories.

I went to Jazzercise aerobics on Saturday, which was 30 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of strength training, and I burned a total of 388 calories.

Next I plan to do the Zumba DVDs and see how many calories I burn with each of those.

I don't know if Polar is the only accurate one. But I did research on HRM a few months ago and the polar came very highly recommended from several sources. And it automatically syncs with the machines in my gym.

My husband got me the F11 for Christmas and I have loved it! My friend went out and bought one after and we both are very happy with ours.

I want to buy a watch to determine how many calories I'm burning through Zumba and other activities. I don't know anything about these heart rate devices. Do you recommend Polar F4? I want something as small as possible and accurate. Is Polar the only accurate one?

Yes, indeed doing the Zumba workout you can burn between 500-900 calories, just by dancing for one hour. This workout is fun and easy to do. So, did you just come from a Zumba class or do your video at home? Then, post your calories burned here ...sort of a healthy competition, one would say...and by "one" I mean me. LOL.

Note, you will need to track your calories burned by using a heart rate monitor, such as Polar.
