I'm hit and miss at tracking. I do okay somewhat because I usually eat the same thing for 2 meals. LOL.

I find that since I am eating mostly SBD foods, I am eating more often than I normally would throughout the day and I am not as hungry.

And so of course I've been entering my foods for several weeks now. And I know that if I am not doing that, the only person I am hurting is myself.

Also, it lets me see whether or not I need to switch things around and it makes me MINDFUL of what I am eating.

I do take a Women's 1 A Day vitamin pill now as well. I think it's vital to get all the nutrients that I can.

Now that the refined sugars are out of my system, I don't have the cravings that I used to. And if I am really hungry, I will eat some protein and/or some fruit. That generally does the trick.

I would tend to say that the serving size would be 1 1/4 cup to 2 cups. South Beach actually doesn't require calorie counting so they do have recipes that don't list the nutritional info. You could put it into the recipe section of sprarkpeople and give your serving size and it would give you the nutritional info.

Just read this whole thread. Interesting! I have a question about the soup recipes in the SB Supercharged Diet book. There is no listing for quantity or number of servings. The Chock-Full-Of Veggies serving size is two cups and there are 4 servings in the recipe. The page of soup recipes doesn't list anything. Any ideas? I am particularly interested in the black bean soup recipe but I imagine they are all the same. I divided this soup into one cup portions and it satisfied my for my lunches. Probably the two cup chili portions will be too much for me.

The protein in the egg is in the white. So you would need 4 egg whites to get 4 ounces of protein.

I am trying to eat 2-4oz of protein at every meal so it makes sense that a half a cup of yogurt is 4oz
but i was not sure how many eggs would be 4oz. So your saying after i boil the egg or scramble them weight them

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. 4 ounces of eggs would have to be weighed in order to be accurate. In general a large egg is a little over 2 ounces.

I try my best to track everything, and if i'm not sure, i over-estimate my portion size so I don't overdo it.

So far this has helped me when I look back on my nutrition tracker and my weight tracker, to know what foods are best for me to lose.

What kind of meat is it? If it "meat for stew" on the package, it usually is just chuck roast cut up.

If its in your recipe then yes you add it to the recipe. If you cooked with the olive oil or whatever, you add it to your tracker. Quite honestly the only thing I dont bother to add to my daily tracker is plaiin mustard (since its clean, neglible calories for the aamount actually used).

If you arent tracking everything, it can be the difference or partially the issue in losing the last bit of weight and/or seeing the scale move.

With soup you will need to measure it all out. What I usually do is when I transfer my soup to the tupperware (or whatever storage), I measure it out. If it is 4 cups of soup, you then enter in 4 servings to your recipe. You decide whats the true serving is though - for example I make soup and list it as 1 cup serving size on the recipe. But I decide that 1.5 cups what I want to eat today. All you are doing then is going to your recipe file and entering 1.5 servings.

Bottom line is you have to measure out the initial recipe and that sets it up for your tracker in he future. I know personally most my soups I make are like 16 cups total and I mark it as 2 cup servings which is what size I normally eat.

Alovebeam - go to Sparkrecipes.com and enter in all the ingredients. Then your serving size would be 1 cup servings and how many servings/baggies you did. Then ya got the calorie count! BAM DONE...lol.

No what I am saying is to be consistent...stick to one way of measuring! If you measured raw, ie you had 8 ounces of raw shrimp which you then cooked up and divided into two meals - the shrimp you would enter into your tracker would be the 4 ounces of raw shrimp. Raw 4 ounces does not equal cooked 4 ounces due to water loss/shrinkage.

On the cabbage, if you started out with 1 cup of raw cabbage and it cooked down to 1/2 cup, then you can enter the 1 cup of raw cabbage into your tracker.

I measure and enter all my veggies raw state. If I am batch cooking I enter all the raw stuff into my recipe book and then save it with the amount of servings it makes - much easier than reentering stuff. Especially if this is something you make more than once.

Ok i have to cook my food in batches so i can pull fro it during the week. So your saying 4oz cooked and 4oz raw have the same amount of calories?
I really dont want to me anal but i am rethinking what i am doign cuz i did not lose any weight so i may be eating more than i though.
Also does this apply t veggies.
For example: I had .5cup of cooked cabbage so i would enter this as 1cup of resh cabbage in spark?
then again i cooked it in a little evoo and onions so i wont be perfect but i am trying to get it in there.

oops. I got confused. For some reason I saw the 2 and thought she only wanted to eat 2 ounces for some reason. That would be a nibble for me. LOL. With shrimp I would probably eat the entire 8 ounces. LOL.

I have measured before and after and it's shocking how much you pay for water.

psst she only started out with 8 oz of shrimp (4 ounces a serving)

This is why I only measure mine in raw. Then after cooking IF I have to divide it up into servings (along with the rest of the ingredients/sauce/etc), I do it with the container on the scale deal (or guestimate since ultimately its just me eating it all anyways..lol).

Bottom line is figuring out which way you want to do it (raw or cooked) and sticking to it. I eliminate most these issues because I freeze all my meats and seafood into one serving sizes usually (except fish since I eat more like 6 ounces).

You could weigh the entire amount and then divide that by 8 which will give you a single serving and then double that amount.

There are all kinds of problems in weighing before and after cooking. For one, different manufacturers insert more water and brine into their products than others and depending on the degree you cook it some of the fat will be rendered out with the water if it is well done. If it is rare then the fat and a lot of the water stays. The fat content is different in some cuts of meat. I think they did some studies on this with bacon and the results were all over the place. Basically it isn't that accurate.

just divide it in half! If you started out with 8 oz...you still have 8 oz of shrimp. You can do this by eyeing it OR you can stick a bowl/plate/tupperware on the scale and THEN turn on the scale (so it doesn't count your container weight) and then you add your cooked meal into it. It will give you the measurement of your meal and then you can serve yourself half of it and refrigerate the other half. So depends on how anal you are....you could also do this prior to actually cooking and not cook the second half until the next day (which with shrimp may be a better thing since it can get rubbery if you cook/microwave it a second time).

most of the spark entries will say raw (usually). Just be consistent - personally I measure my meat in the raw state and consider the entries from sparks to be raw unless it states cooked/braised/broiled.

Depending on the weight that is about correct. If you are using sparks data vs other folks input data then it is based on the usda nutritional database. As you can see for yourself the 1 cup (has the gram weight) for an orange is 21 gms of carbs: nutritiondata.self.com/facts/fruits-

I am begging to doubt if these spark calories are right. 22 carbs for one orange??

A lot of us get sloppy with this from time to time and have to get back to basics. It really does help.

OOk I need to do better. I took out a packet of chicken dozen and dumped in the Crockpot so I don't weigh the chicken. I made green beans with smoked turkey wing but I did not weigh the greens or wing and add as a recipe. And figure out the serving. I just took a cup and ate with the chicken. I have been measuring salad dressing, dairy and nuts

When I don't track I consume more and more calories. Same with not weighing my food.

Tracking and measuring could be the difference in losing that last 10 lbs for many folks.

I weigh/measure everything and when I don't, is when I gain weight.

I HATE tracking, but I do keep up with what I eat to some degree. I don't eat much meat or poultry and when I do I make sure it's the palm of my hand or smaller. I measure my fish because I can under-eye a serving (fish is lightweight). I tend to weight/measure foods I eat regularly, like seafood/fish, soy milk, and bean. So I may not track, but I do weight/measure. I don't measure my veggies, except salad or raw spinach because I can under estimate a serving. When I eat grains (2-3 times a week), I measure it. Again, I don't track, I do measure and try to eat really clean and set healthy weekly goals for myself (like not eating between meals). So it's a balance for me.

I am not anal about it, but I think I should be. My problem is all the little bites that I take add up, and sabotage my weight loss. If I tracked everything I would no longer be battling the same 10 pounds. lol

Yeah when I was losing (versus maintaining), I would track everything BUT things like mustard (freebie in my book) and ketchup (since I rarely use it), I STILL measure everything - mayo...meats/veggies/etc all go on my food scale prior to eating or cooking with. It doesn't take that long if doing things like stir fries and since many of us are creatures of habit, you can make up food groupings, such as a stir fry veggie group (onion, mushroom, peppers) so it's less time intensive. Recipes I either enter my own in or find one close to what I am making and calling it good.

Weighing/measuring really is critical considering our eyes start to supersize and all it takes is one day to be FAMISHED while cooking and bam, you have added an extra couple hundred calories without thinking.

I think it's important to track everything, including condiments, etc. I actually weigh my food as it's more accurate. It is a lot of work at first but once you have entered the foods in, you can recall them later easily. You can put them in the recipe section or use a recipe already entered which would make it easier as well as the nutritional information is already there.

FFor example I love tuna, stirfry, meatloaf...this are matures of meat, veggies and fats. R u measuring everything then figuring out the portions? That is so tedious and takes time when I am ready to eat?
