Well I've now completed one full week of phase one and I'm so proud of myself! I didn't wander away from my plan at all and got some great results! I've lost 7 lbs and 2.5 inches. It feels so good, and motivating, so see my hard work pay off! Seeing results also motivates me to keep going and not give up, I love it! :) One more week of phase one, I'm looking forward to 1.5 next week, I do miss my fruit! Just wanted to share my success!

I am doing dairy and meat free. I havn't eat any meat so far today is day#4 and feeling great. No SUGAR cravings. I am going to do some shopping done this weekend and get some fish for me. I am not big fan of meat/egg eater. I know my protein is in low end. I need to keep up with my protein. So far this time around i am doing great with my eating habit. I use to plan cook lots of food but not this time. I am doing it as it goes......it is working for me. I cook enough so that last long whole one day. than left over i eat in next day for breakfast than cook again for the day.

Thank you, Kierae! This is the sort of informed response I was hoping for. I do have 100 pounds to lose, and I'm thinking doing a month-long phase 1 and then an extended phase 1.5 would be right for me.

And yes, what are you saying makes total sense. Thanks! :)

The response from the 6 years of my doing SB has been extending it doesn't net you any better results weight loss wise (which is usually why most folks want to extend it). It's fine to extend it if you have 100 pounds plus to lose (doing p1 up to a month). Otherwise doing what we call a phase 1.5 is more appropriate (and leads to less boredom issues). Quite honestly most of us never go into a "full" phase 2 like it is described in the book. Most of us can't handle eating more than a serving of grains/starch on a daily basis.

The goal is to figure out what you need - you may be able to handle fruits...you may be able to handle one type of starch (ie starchier veggies vs grains) or you may tolerate rice but not wheat.

Going slow is ultimately the goal. If you know from past experience you stall out whenever you add starch - don't add it. Or limit it to special occasions or once a week.

Make sense? emoticon

So does anyone have actual first-hand experience with extending phase one?

I'm now thinking what I may do is an extended phase 1.5, adding in one or two servings of fruit a day and holding off on starches. I know from past experience that adding starch tends to slow or stop my weight loss almost completely, whereas I'm not sensitive in this way to fruit at all.

You will not have the results that you have seen the first two weeks. It is meant to jump start weight loss and eliminate cravings. The problem with staying on it longer than 2 weeks is that you miss out on some vital nutrients and it gets boring.

After doing some research on the topic, and reading Dr. Agatston's advice, I've decided that I would like to try to stay on Phase One for longer than two weeks--closer to three or four. Has anyone here had experience with doing this? Did you find that it got harder? Easier? Did you continue to achieve the Phase One weight loss you were hoping for and expecting?

Dr. Agatston discusses the extended Phase One option here: www.prevention.com/weight-loss/diets

Sneaking pancake batter into someone's eggs is most likely a way to cheap out because eggs are more expensive than pancake batter. It's also a way to make people sick, people like celiacs. I really don't like this kind of thing. When I order eggs I expect to eat eggs, not pancakes.

Yay! Hubby and I lost 7 pounds during week one! Now onto the dreaded week 2! During week 1 it wasn't hard other than I had to travel for work for a few days and also found that people sneak carbs on you when you least expect it. I was at a hotel and having scrambled eggs. I asked the attendance why the eggs tasted different and they were proud of the fact that they do the IHOP method of adding pancake batter to the eggs to make them fluffier. Well, I tried :-)

The new book has updated food lists, has more recipes/food plans/success stories, expanded dining out section, more nutritional info, and a fitness program.

I read the new one from the library. I think they just added a few dietary things like milk is OK. I also remember more emphasis on exercise.

Happy healthy new year everyone! My hubby and I are on phase 1 and we look forward to having a healthier lifestyle. Question, I purchased the South Beach books a few years ago, but there is a few new editions. Is there anything worth reviewing, or is it pretty much the same?

Glad you'll be joining me tomorrow. It helps to not be doing it alone. I just finished my last sip of egg nog before pouring the remainder of the carton down the sink, and my last bite of the best pecan toffee that I've ever tasted.

Yes, I made the cheesecake with Truvia. I don't drink coffee so I don't know about that taste. I have used stevia and it tasted bitter. I have not noticed the same with Truvia unless I use too much.

I want to do ph 1 again too. I forgot and ate some crackers today. So I guess tomorrow it is. I won't be 140 by valentines though.

emoticon Pam for the recipe! Did you make it using Truvia? I've never baked with the stuff, but have recently tried it as a sweetener in my coffee and found it has a bitter after taste.

Anyone else starting the new year off by doing a couple of weeks of Phase 1? I am beginning tomorrow on Jan. 2nd. My first goal in 2013, is to weigh 140 lbs. in 6 weeks - by Valentines Day.

Actually lemon juice is allowed in phase one. The cheese would have to be low fat or fat free.

I am going back to ph 1 tomorrow. I got my grocery shopping done. I do better when I am sugar free. I have let sugar wander into my life. I sure feel better when I eat lower carb. Especially not the treats. I want to avoid most of them during the holidays.

I went to a church party last night. I took a SF almond crusted cheesecake and ate that instead of the other cakes offered.

(I guess I should admit that I ate potatoes and a roll so I wasn't all good.)

I will succeed by living each day with strength and intention.

I actually thought about that too but didn't want to say it. LOL.

That's assuming the Mayan's prediction about the end of the world on Dec. 21st. is wrong!

I'm refusing to permit any holiday goodies to pass my threshold or lips, until after the first day of winter in three weeks.

So far things are working out in my favor as far as overeating. Hubby is sick and he usually is a bad influence so for now I'm safe from the really bad stuff. And it looks like the holiday parties won't be any temptation either.

For a change this year, I'm planning to take a more proactive approach to avoid holiday weight gain in the beginning of Dec., rather than just a reactive one like I usually do in the beginning of Jan. So starting today, I'm doing Phase 1 for at least a week to gain better control on my carb. cravings. With the hope that it will be easier to not over indulge on all those tempting Christmas cookies and chocolate candy, which seem to turn up everywhere this month. Anyone else who's interested in joining the pre-holiday, proactive phase 1 bandwagon -- let's keep in touch for accountability and support.

I think it's important for all of us to come up with some kind of plan to make it through the holidays unscathed. It's too hard to get the weight back off.

emoticon to the team! V8 is only counted as 1/2 cup max (ie no matter how much you drink) of that 4.5 cups required.

Kudos to you Sweetmnthing for starting up SB during the holidays! It really is so much better to be beachy and not slide into the normal 10 pound holiday gain that people tend to put on! emoticon

Starting Phase 1 tomorrow. I have almost everything I need for food in the house, just have to pick up some skim milk. Phase 1 is tough, but it works at helping with the cravings. At least it's only for 14 days. I don't have any plans for Thanksgiving, my family lives in Iowa and I work on Friday. At least hopefully this time of year the scale will be moving down when it's moving up for alot of people.

South Beach is a really healthy diet. Although many people experience symptoms of the low carb flu with headache, fatigue, and malaise as some of the cheif problems, dizziness is not a symptom of being on the South Beach diet. Neither are problems with vision. Are you getting in your 4.5 cups of veggies, your 1/2 cups of beans, your two dairy a day, your two servings of healthy fats, and lean protein? Are you drinking plenty of water?
