Hello Team !

I'm new on the team, I'm trying SB for the first time.. (well really second, but last time I lasted only a day...because I thought I was going blind (saw white spots everywhere and couldn't finish my day at work))This time I'm 3 days off work so I thought it was the perfect timing to start:) Day 1 of phase 1 is going well so far... it is almost 5pm and I'm just starting to feel a little dizzy!

I'm getting married next October and I plan on starting dress shopping in January. My goal is to lose and tone up as much as I can before the wedding. By starting now, I know I won't have to do a crash diet 2 weeks prior THE day ! Also I am getting married down south, so I'll be wearing a bikini all week...that means I want to feel good about my body and be proud.

I will need all the support this team can provide :)

Looking forward to chit-chat with you guys,

Marie

I have had Meniere's syndrome before too and once you have it you are prone to getting it back.

Hi, all! Yesterday ended up being an "off" day for me. A few weeks ago I had an inner ear infection which affected my sense of balance and gave me dizzy spells. I woke up to that again yesterday. If it continues through the weekend, I'll call to see if I can get the antibiotics re-filled. Still under the weather today....

Thanks for the link.....

BBL!

I LOVE to cook - clearly...lol. I have been surfing for menu ideas for Thanksgiving dinner along with some ideas for a Xmas dinner party I am cooking for.

You might check out this thread that has some good holiday ideas (some are p2 of course but they are marked usually):

I don't like eating out a lot so I have to cook at home. I have only tried one recipe from the South Beach cookbooks that I didn't like.

emoticon Betty, it's great to have you here! I'm just getting started myself with SB eating. Today is day 8 for me. I know I'm crazy to start something right before the holidays, but earlier this month my eating was just so out of control and sweets were irresistible. I thought if I didn't jump in to do SOMETHING I couldn't imagine what my weight might be like after the holidays. Week 1 has been great for me and my cravings have totally subsided. I haven't suffered hunger pangs either. So welcome aboard. It's great hubby will walk with you. My dh (dear husband) walks with me, too, but I have to admit I can do a quicker pace when he isn't with me. Anyway it's great to have you here!

Ticia, all of you gals must enjoy being in the kitchen a lot more than I do. LOL! It would be great to find a dessert-y recipe that I could prepare for Thanksgiving day though. So I will explore those recipes.

Kierae, how are you doing? Thanks for all the work you've put in with all the different helpful hints, recipes and advice. The nutshell pieces have been tremendously helpful.

Ok....better quit dallying & get this day moving!

Sandy

Good morning team-

I am going to get aquainted with the team reading all the different posts so I can contribute too.

I do have several South Beach diet cookbooks and the regular book as well as Spark people cookbook. So you are thinking like I am thinking too- ARE YOU USING THEM? Quick answer is no but am so looking forward to using them again since I can actually talk to someone that uses them too. I used to enjoy when I was working to plan my meals [believe it or not-for the whole work week ]not weekends as I was taking myself on first. My hubby and I worked opposite shifts for years. And at work got such support too. I was oldest in my department and would tell my co-workers different ways of making foods. Oh and dig this I even got on my wii fit every morning for 183 days straight-- you can tell I can get down to business when I set my mind to it. Hope I am not jumping the gun but hubby and I walked together for first time yesterday for 1 1/2 miles and plan on doing again today. Since he gets up later than I do [both retired by the way] I can use my wii. I think you can tell I am so excited to feel like I am finally connecting with something I am sure can work. Thank you so much emoticon Betty

I've printed out the 1.5 Phase instructions. Great recommendations. Today I've had to battle a mid-week slump, but managed to get in a walk at lunch. It was a longer work day for me. I expect you both are getting weary of looking at my monotonous meal plans, so thought I'd stop sharing them unless I hit a bump in the road.

I didn't know about the cookbook. I wonder if there are some freebie SB recipes on the internet. I'll have to investigate. Now is that 28 year old son the same one who was sick on one of your anniversarys? Man, time flies by doesn't it!

Okay....Just checking in for the day. You all have a good evening!

I should also state the South Beach has a holiday/special occasion cookbook which is really good. I got mine for $4.

I usually make pumpkin fluff because that is what my family prefers but there are a lot of recipes for pumpkin pie that are so much like the real thing you won't know the difference. Most use splenda. My hubby was very opposed to eating healthy and I removed the skin from the chicken for several months before I mention that I was thinking about doing it. LOL. He pitched a fit and then I told him he had been eating it that way for months. Resistance to a healthier way of eating is often psychological. To many people eating healthy means deprivation and if you see Kierae's recipes and the South beach cookbooks you realize that does not have to be the case. My son is 28 and he eats what we eat. It's never too early to introduce the rest of the family to healthy food as well. If your family has a history of chronic diseases, and most do, then you will be doing them a favor. Though they may be healthy now you want to keep them that way and preventing food related illnesses is one of the easiest ways to do that.

Drat on the chocolate pudding powder! I hope it hasn't set me back too much. Today is my WI day & the scale was down 3 lbs. That is GREAT for me!

Thanks for the input on holidays. You've made some great adjustments - like the crustless dessert. Is you pumpkin dessert still pie like? We, too, have the traditional meal which I would adapt if it were just me and d/h. Our traditional includes a lot of starchy foods. It used to include broccoli casserole, which was a recipe that diminished the healthiness of it being a vegetable dish. Now that the boys are older - Grant especially is very picky, but he does like steamed broccoli. Little does he know that he's helping me out with his choice.

I'm going to go read about the 1.5 phase. Today is day 7 for me, so tomorrow begins week 2 of phase 1. It looks like I need to review that snack chart a little closer, too, since I missed the pudding powder being in phase 2.

BBL!!!

Still crazy here. LOL.

I think each of us has to come to some kind of compromise on holidays like Thanksgiving. I think Kierae calls them lifestyle decisions. Each of us has their own way of coping. Some people make their own Beachy recipes so that they have something to eat. Other people use the 2 bite rule. They allow themselves a couple of bites of whatever they really want while passing on the stuff that really isn't that appealing.

It's important to my family that we have our traditional meal. We have turkey breast, gravy, dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, relish tray, rolls, apple dessert, pumpkin dessert. I make everything from scratch and as healthy as I can by substituting. We have nixed the mashed potatoes because we really didn't need another starch. We have nixed the pie crust. I use splenda as I am not sensitive to artificial sweeteners. I use portion control. I'm not triggered by the meal.

In phase 1, aim for 3 meals and 3 snacks. The rationale is to get the metabolism kicked into action. Also for future reference, the pudding powder is phase 2 due to the thickening agents.

Ticia, sounds like you have your hands full helping hubby with your MIL's estate. It is GREAT that you are resorting to emotional eating.

Okay, nothing yet to report for today. I have been feeling really great, which I am attributing to the increase in protein that I've been getting. However, I have an internal dialogue going on about Thanksgiving day. Thanksgiving day will be day 14 of phase 1 - and I could technically slide into either phase 1.5 or phase 2. I plan to read the notes on that over the next few days that I see here on the team page. My dialogue is whether or not to indulge in all the starchy foods like dressing, dumplings, potatoes on the grand feast day - or to be stricter with myself.

So far, I've really not missed the breads and such. My meals were getting a little monotonous the other day, but I've been varying my selections a bit more and that has helped. The only time I miss bread is like yesterday when I had the natural PB at lunch.

Another dialogue is in my head is: "Wow, phase 1 has been fantastic. Why not stretch it out into a third week."

By the way I did a sneak peek this a.m. for tomorrow's WI & the scale was encouraging. Hope it holds out or gets even better for tomorrow.

Ticia.....Kierae ~ You two have a wonderful day. Remember: "Don't let people drive you crazy when it's within walking distance."

Yep, South Beach is great!

I am trying to get my own work down today while dealing with the idiots who are supposed to be helping my hubby settle his mother's estate. I have had it. At least I don't eat too much when this happens as I have no time to eat. LOL. Patience, yes, remain calm. Hsssss. LOL.

Good morning, Mentors!!

Today started off on the right foot. I woke up early enough to get about 20 minutes on the recumbent bike before work. I wear a pedometer (actually a Fitbit) and I was a little disappointed on the low step count so I must not have had it positioned properly. Still it is good to know a little bit of today's exercise is under my belt.

Food started off right as well:

B - Gk. yogurt, 1 HBE, 3 slices Canadian bacon & 1 srv. V-8 juice

You know I haven't had craving or hunger pangs with this plan. It's kind of amazing to me. I'll come back later to report on my other meals & exercise.

What you gals up to today? I hope you have a positive and uplifting day!

Checking in again to report:

L - 2.5 C Salad greens, FF dressing, Red pepper scoops, 2 T. natural PB

D - Smoothie made with: 1 C - FF Milk, 2 T. SF choc. pudding powder, 2 T natural PB, WW protein powder, ice

Planned snack - fudgsicle

Exercise: 25 min/outdoor walk

It sounds like you are doing great. Kierae is a very adventurous cook and has excellent recipes but I usually have minimal time so I have to keep it fairly simple compared to many people. I hope to have more time soon to devote to some of her great recipes. Wait until you are able to do some phase 2!! LOL. More ideas, more great recipes. I have all the cookbooks and love them.

Thanks, Ticia, for the suggestion about checking out the recipes. I did find & print out the snack ideas. For the most part I don't mind some repetition - and it really makes it easier on work days. Kierae's suggestion about using the SF jello to flavor FF-cottage cheese has been a great help.

Day 4 Report:

B - Canadian bacon, Greek yogurt, and coffee with SF Creamer

L - Tuna, 1/4 C. grated FF cheese, salad greens, sweet peppers, 1/2 C. steamed broccoli

D - 1/2 C great northern beans, 2 light beef franks, 1/2 C. FF-CC, 1 HBE, 1 c. steamed broccoli.

Snacks - Coffee with SF creamer, fudgsicle.

Right now my calories are a little under 1200 for the day, so I may add something else to snacks or dinner. I don't mind being slightly under, but it's just over 1000 which is low for the day. So....

Exercise: 40 min/treadmill & 20 min/recumbent bike.

Sandy

You are doing great but if you are bored with your menu then check out the recipe threads on the team. There are lots of great recipes there. The first couple of weeks are the most challenging.

If you are okay with eating the same thing for a while that's okay too. I have read a lot of Dr. Oz and Roizen's books and though I don't always agree with them I do think they are right about some things such as: variety isn't always our friend. I followed their advice and chose to eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day and it made it easier during the initial change to eating healthy. Like you, I found it easier to eat a main dish salad for lunch every day and I have carried that tradition on. Salads are always a healthy option. I had never eaten breakfast before so I had to start with no track record. I now eat the same thing for breakfast almost every day too. But I do vary my supper and snacks. Though you may not want to do this keep in mind that most thin people are filling their tank. Over weight people tend to eat for reasons other than hunger - to comfort themselves, relieve boredom, reward themselves, etc. By adapting your recipes and trying new ones you can usually find a way to be satisfied with a healthy diet but it involves changing our attitude and expectations about food. I'm still working on that as it is the hardest part of eating healthy. LOL.

If you need any help or suggestions let us know. Did I give you my phase one snack list?

Today is Day 4 & it is the first day that I've felt a little wompsey about my food. I'm not having any cravings, but I think I'm being too repetitive with my food choices & find myself wanting something else. It's a little difficult to switch it up (since those were my grocery purchases this week). I find a daily salad helps a lot toward the 4.5 cups of veggies per day. Anyway I've been OP. I'll be back to report later on my meals today. (Like I said - they are pretty repetitive).

Hope you all are having a good Monday!

Dinner (packed to go with me)-1 C. salad greens, 1/4 C. grated cheese, 2 LF-ham slices with FF-cheese slice rolled up in each, HBE, FF-salad dressing.

Excellent on the exercise! It will help you to meet your goal.

Day 3 has gotten off to a good beginning by getting the exercise out of the way early. Today was 47 minutes/treadmill & 13 minutes/recumbent bike. I probably won't be able to keep up an hour of exercise during the work week, but am psyching myself to strive for 30-45 minutes at least.

Day 2

B - 2 egg omelet with 1 C. spinach/Gk. yogurt
L - Salad greens, spinach, 7 pecans, 1/4 C. grated FF cheese, 1 HBE, 2 T. bacon bits & FF Poppyseed Dressing
S - V-8 Spicy Hot juice & 1 string cheese
D - 4 oz. roast, 3/4 C green beans, 1/2 C. northern beans, 1/2 C. FF cottage cheese

Calories are good for the day & I could have a SF fudgsicle or something like that if I need it this evening.

My BIG push today was to get in exercise. I did 42 minutes on the treadmill & 18 minutes on the recumbent bike.

I haven't had any problems with hunger or cravings thus far.

I am positive that I have gotten in a little more than 4.5 cups of veggies today. Not as sure about yesterday though - so am keeping an eye on that.

Day 1 went well.

We picked my little grandson Cade up from Kindergarten yesterday. When my daughter came by to get him, she asked us to meet her at Cracker Barrel for dinner. After she left, I thought why did we agree to do that???? But all went well - I had 4 little grilled chicken tenders, 1/2 cup pinto beans and 1/2 cup cottage cheese.

So for day 1 I stayed on track with food - got in 5 servings of veggies. But I didn't get "official" exercise in. So today will be the grand push to get started with a walking program.

I'll be back later to report on Day 2 & to stay accountable.

We try to stay subscribed to all of the current threads. Once you are out of phase one you may want to switch to the South Beach Lounge.

Feel free to post wherever and whatever you are comfortable with.

Carbs are not restricted in South Beach. The diet just recommends good carbs.

I make my own salad dressings but there are many commercial dressings that are okay as long as they have 3gms or less of sugar per 2 tbsp serving. Canola oil or olive oil is preferred. Many fall into this category.

Kierae & Morticia, WOW! That's a LOT of miles in a day!! Good for you!

Is THIS the best thread for keeping communication going with the two of you? I wanted to let you know......

Today is Day 1 of Phase 1 for me. So far, so good. I want to do a food report here for a bit. I saw what you all advised about the public nutrition tracker - but I don't know that I want everyone to be able to see it. Do you mind if I just share that here for a bit? If it gets too time consuming for me, I'll consider the other.

So far today:

B - Gk. yogurt, hard-boiled egg & 1 C. lettuce with FF bleu cheese dressing

L - 3 oz. 97% FF-ham, salad greens, hard-boiled egg, 1/4 C. FF-shredded cheese, FF- Thousand Island dressing

I know on one of the threads here I saw where someone asked about how many grams of carbs each day....I want to go back and find that again.

Anyway I think I'm off to a decent start. I tried to purchase NSA (no sugar added) items this a.m. but noticed my FF dressing has corn-syrup in the ingredients list so...drat!

Also, do you all have a weigh-in thread here or is that totally individual? My WI on Thursday, 11/8 was 176.6......

Thanks for all your help!

Sandy

I also have R.A. but have not had an acute flare up in years ( aka wheelchair bound). I try to walk between 5 and 6 miles a day. I garden, dance, swim, do qigong, yoga, and modified strength training. (I don't need to increase my muscle mass).

Exercise varies per individual - what do you like to do? I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so when I started I was doing short walks and Walking Away the Pounds dvds. Now I walk 4 miles and/or do an hour on the treadmill...sometimes break out the dvds...etc. Bottom line is doing SOMETHING will help with toning and weight loss and overall better health. Some folks have lower energy in phase 1 so they keep things at a slower pace but again that varies too.

If you follow the diet as ordered the cravings will be resolved. That is what phase one is designed to do. Get rid of cravings. Be sure and get your snacks in. If you are hungry then eat something that is on plan.

Usually during p1, you can break that cycle of sugar cravings since it's eliminated from your diet. BUT some folks do react to sugar alcohols too so just be aware of this. Otherwise while in phase 1, try finding something that will satiate that sweet tooth such as plain greek yogurt mixed with a crystal light or tbsp of sugar free jello powder. If you add a dollop of sf cool whip, it can feel quite decadent for a dessert. emoticon I would go that option before going for a 100 calories of sf candy since that just tends to be a slippery slope sometimes.

One BIG concern I have is that I have an incredible sweet tooth & my cravings have been terrible lately. Instead of losing, I've been gaining since starting on SP. I must get that under control. Today I'll make a grocery list & read over what Kierae wrote up about cravings. I'm very hopeful that SBD will help me break out of that cycle. It's a terrible time to start something new right before the holidays! But I'm game......

Be sure and get all you veggies in and your beans and drink plenty of water. It helps relieve the symptoms of the low carb flu which usually occurs in the first few days.

The last two mornings I've added Greek yogurt to my breakfast, which has helped hugely with my protein intake. I've printed out the nutshell guide for Phase 1 - and I'm so pleased to see that the list has been revised since the initial printing of the book. So.....two and a half days to count down before it's all systems go.

It's a great diet, especially for people with certain conditions and "apple" shaped people who tend to put on weight around the middle.

Hi, I am new here & kind of, sort of accidentally joined this team. I had come into the forum to investigate & see what SBD was all about. I've been reading through some of your posts & I've gotten interested in sticking around and giving it a shot. I especially like what I'm reading about the 4.5 veggie servings. I somehow had in mind eating only protein with this plan. I will continue to look around the next couple of days. Friday is grocery day & I will plan to begin Phase 1 in earnest at that point.

I went into one of the threads to see where Keirae had posted Phase 1 in a nutshell & I know that will be helpful to me.

Thanks so much for the guidance & help as I started.

It's sad to say but I haven't been on here for over a year. Sept. 30th 2011 was the last time I logged on...I have gained back all 30 pounds I lost before I threw out my back and got out of my routine of both exercise and South Beach. I've thought over and over about getting back on track...so yesterday I logged back in and went to a few team pages. I didn't want to commit back to anything because I've tried a few times over this year and just could never stick to it like I did before my back injury. I wasn't sure but when I woke up this morning I said "I'm going to do this". Started back on day one and I am in!!! Wish me luck!!!

I can do this!!!!
