Thanks Kierae! I will follow your advice in the airport.
I love shopping just the outskirts of the grocery store. Problem is, I forget I have non-SB eaters in my house and often come home with nothing for them! What a pain to have to think two menus for two sets of eaters!

@KIERAE--yeah, the fat free was bought on another fat phobic plan. I eat eggs. The whole thing. :) If I eat a decent amount of fat, I stop eating within reason. Go figure!

Thatllpreach: better to overdo the nuts than grabbing something carby/sugary. On the airport, Starbucks has salads, boiled eggs/cheese/fruit...if there is a subway, you can have any "sandwich" as a salad or you can go for the 6 inch wheat sub if you are on phase 2.

Dawnsyogarflow - yup I am not a fan of the fat free half and half just for that exact reason (along with the sugar free flavored creamers). If you want something for your coffee, just go for the half and half or even heavy cream. The fat isn't going to kill ya....

How was everyone's weekend? Reviewing the week - how do you think you did? Did you learn or notice anything about you & your relationship with food?

It was funny when I was walking thru the store the other day I realized just how much easier (&quicker) I made it thru the store when I have eliminated grains. I basically hit the butcher, the fruits & veggies and grabbed dairy and was out of there. I didn't venture into the multiple aisles....

My goal this week is to check out the new abdominal torture machine the gym has gotten to see if I can actually do it (with shoulder replacements/multiple joint replacements =most weight machines off limits). Sure would be nice if I could! Also am trying to find a zumba dvd so I can check it out - any one have any suggestions (has to be a dvd and not for a Wii).

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie

Starting Phase 1 today...
You learn a lot from reading labels! Corn is in pretty much everything in one form or another! My son was diagnosed with corn and soy allergies about 10 months ago and we are gluten free. So we have to make pretty much everything we eat. Not a lot of processed food. My biggest challenges while going through phase 1 will be not eating what I am baking and making sure my teenage son gets enough carbs (for a skinny teen hockey player) while I control my own. My husband is doing phase 1 with me so that will help. Have a great week!

Starting Phase 1 today.
I noticed over the weekend, when looking at the carton, that Land O Lakes half and half has corn syrup in it???? 5 grams of carb per 2 tablespoon! When did THAT happen? Yuck!
I'll have to check the store brand, I think that is my only other option. Or just cut it out, I don't really need it.

Rough weekend. Unplanned events left me with no snacks when I needed them. Went a little overboard on nuts, but however they kept me from the bad stuff I was craving. One more week on Ph1 and then we go to Florida for the first week of Ph2. Definitely looking forward to fresh fruit and more fish. The days we fly will be the challenge. What's good to eat for dinner at an airport? We will take appropriate snacks, water bottles to fill once we get past security, etc.

Get in 4 1/2 cups of veggies, get in up to 2 cups of dairy (ie milk or plain yogurt - NOT cheese)...get in 1/2 cup of beans or increase your hummus to like 4 tbsp - and that should bring your calories up. Oh also don't be afraid of "fat" - ie use your olive oil or whatever fat to saute with (ie eggs) which will help satiate you and add calories. Your calories are low which as long as the average over the week come up to the "minimum" then it's fine but you really should NEVER be hungry on this diet.

looks like you're not getting enough food - calories are low - I have that same problem when starting out. Could be why you are so hungry

Day 4 - Scale was nice emoticon but for the first time - I was hungry! Forced myself to pace out my snacks and drink instead of go to food. Stomach was growling. No huge alterations from the first three days. Any thoughts?

Congestion sounds more like a cold and not typical of phase 1 detox. Might take in some EmergenC and a multivit!

emoticon It will pass - some folks hit the "low carb flu" symptoms from day 3 to 5. Push the water and make sure you are getting in some beans in the diet. Their carb factor helps push us thru.

Phase 1 Day 2: Down 3 pounds. Had the shakes yesterday and a headache most of the day but I worked through it. I suppose my body was going through sugar/carb withdrawls. LOL! Maybe today will be better. Felt full most of the day...just sort of "off" with the shakes and headache.

Thank you for starting this. I am like a lot of you on this string. Been there, did well, gained back and now back for a new lifestyle. My husband and I are finishing day 2 of Phase 1. If it goes to plan, I should start feeling shaky tomorrow and will need to get over the hump. I also seem to get a cold or illness during phase 1. I am taking a multi-vite and hoping to sleep well to help mitigate this. Thanks for your support!

I've learned that I'm great on short term dieting but have never gone for the long haul (can you say yo-yo dieter?). So this time, as I set out to lose the whole 100+ pounds I've come up with this to remind myself that this is going to be for the long haul: "Two days of self-control under my belt, 363 to go". I hope I find this encouraging as I count through the days with each morning sunrise.

Most folks follow calories since eating too little can just as easily backfire on you as eating too much. You can overeat ANYTHING and gain, regardless how good it is for you. Calories tends to be an issue in phase 1 - normally it can be harder for some folks (depending on your food choices) to meet their minimum calories. You don't have to hit 1200 every day but it is the average over the week that does matter. Of course once you can add in a grain or starchy veggie and/or fruit - the calories are easier to hit.

I def. don't follow to the "T" as well! Mostly it's with my coffee! I make regular coffee and add skimmed milk in it, but here in England (I'm an American expat in England) they don't sell the carnation coffee flavorings (I can't drink it black or with just milk and substitute sugar) so I do use a syrup that's flavored with a little bit of sugar in it. I have to change a few other things they don't have here, but I go for the "lesser evil" if I absolutely have to have the item. LOL! Phase one is hard enough if your sticking to the "T", so I try to make it as easy as possible just sticking to a couple of my own recipes with the approved ingredient. I do have the cookbook for ideas if I get bored or stuck, but mostly I make my own way with the approved to eat list and make minor changes here and there.

My problem area is phase 2, I tend to want to add in too much too fast! emoticon

I personally don't follow the plan to the "T". We all need to figure out what works for us. The book is more of a template. And lord knows I don't follow the menu plan - heck I don't ever follow a darn recipe! emoticon

I know for me, I do more fat, less processed/chemicals - I use butter, coconut oil, half & half etc. This works for me and I feel better. The only thing I hold fast to is the veggie count - 4 1/2 cups of veggies every day is GOOD for all of us.

Perfect timing. I restarted on Phase One today. I went grocery shopping on Saturday to be prepared for today's start!!! It worked for me before so I know I can do it again!!!

One question....do you follow the Plan in the book to the letter or do you make substitutions???

Good luck to everyone

I am beginning to think that it is no longer for me b/c I try and later... stop. I tried WW in the process and didnt feel that was in my mind to follow through on but with SB my desire and intentions are good and I know this is the best for me but why can't I sustain for more than 2 wks. I really need help. My goal is to lose b4 I turn 40. In 2012, I will be the beautiful 40. HEEEELLLLPPPPP

Hi everyone!! I have started the South Beach diet several times, but for one reason or another always got sidetracked by events and other things and fell off the bandwagon. But the past 6 month have been brutal for me, and the over-indulging has caught up to me! So I am hopping on the new-years-resolution train and doing Phase 1 starting today, except this time I will have no cheating in these first 14 days. Good luck to everyone who is starting now too!

My go to lunch/dinner is basically the same although I have traveled with deli rollups too. These days if I know I am going to be on the road during dinner or lunch, I do a bigger breakfast (calorie wise) and then make my evening snack solid. My calories for the day kinda looks like breakfast 400 calories/lunch 250/dinner 250/day snack 100/eve snack 250.

I have also done celery w/peanut butter & celery w/laughing cow cheese - the protein and fat holds me and it travels easily.

Kierae, do you have go to lunches and dinner? Like the Go to breakfast you were talking about. I like to have Go To meals for when I'm super hungry or something comes up.

I'm on Phase 1.5 most of the time. I eat 1 starch (bread, cereal, starchy veg) and 1 fruit per day. It works better for me and I don't get hungry.

Phase 1.5 is a term coined by the SB community to describe a slowed down version of phase 2. The way the book describes phase 2 has folks adding in too much too quickly and most folks cannot tolerate more than one serving of starchs/grains per day for example. So when someone says they are doing phase 1.5, it usually means they are still limiting grain servings (or fruit - although most folks don't have issue with fruit).

Thanks, Kierae. I'm afraid to step onto the scale. I know it's bad news. I'm going onto Ph 1 tomorrow. I forgot and ate cereal today.

Actually, I'll do 1.5 today and got to phase 1 tomorrow. That way it won't be a total loss.
