I have to take enzymes to digest beans but they really help. Phase one is 2 weeks unless you have more than 100 pounds to use. You might check out phase 1.5 in the sticky threads. I usually start with one fruit at a time and eat it for a couple days and if it doesn't cause weight gain, stall, or a trigger I try another.

emoticon Thanks for your encouragement it is greatly appreciated.
204 (-3) pounds for the week and 5.5 for first half June
Breaking 200 will end the obesity status and I am thrilled to move past the BMI milestone.

The beans (slow digesting carbs+protein) are making the difference this time. I tried beans in the past but gave up with the gas. I am using canned beans, rinsed to reduce sodium and cook with unsalted vegetable broth. After my body adjusts to can I will make my own beans esp pinto. Eating right is cheap! What I save on beans I can buy expensive proteins and organic F & V.

Oh I miss fruit even with adding beans the magical fruit.

Does Phase 1 last a month then add fruit ?

emoticon It was hard to get started on this SB plan. On Wednesday June 8th, & the past 5 days I did well on the plan. I have lost weight and will post the weekly tally here 6/15.
I am tied but I don't mind going to bed early. Every morning it has been nice weather for a walk with Dh.

growing up with my 5 bro & sis and cousins, there were 23 of us kids, we all lived right around my Grandparents who had a small farm. we used to play football, soccer, baseball(with my Gram pitching). she also taught us how to box, she would go to yard sales and pick up sports equipment. in the winter we would go sledding out in the back of my house now, back then it was just a hill and also ice skating on the pond. life was great then, we grew up, when I went to work at my first job out of high school, I worked in an office and listening to some of the women who worked there they weren't close with their brothers, and I would just say that's a shame I have cousins who are like my brothers and sisters.

ROFLMBO!!!! That is sooooooooooooooo funny!! Made my day! At least you were being smart and safe! We lived in a small town and our parents would tell us to avoid certain "weirdos" but we didn't have a clue why we were avoiding them. We didn't ask for particulars and they didn't tell us. You would have been great friends for my female first cousin and me. I think we drove both of our mom's insane.

even back then we had to watch out for the weirdo's, one night my two cousins and me were walking the one that lived the farthest(3 blocks?? lived in the country)back to her house and it was dark out, a car was coming up the road real slow so we jumped in the ditch so not to be seen and when we peeked out as the car went by, it was my mother out looking for us.it was funny to us, not to my mother though. I totally agree. When I was young we never wanted to come inside and would drink out of the hose rather than have to risk our parents noticing that we were available for work and filthy. It seems like there are a lot more perverts these days. A little girl was raped and murdered in our area and we are very rural. The murderer was a mile away from my home the night he killed her. Scary.

Play outside? How boring! Where's my "electronics"?

Kids don't know HOW to play anymore! No imagination. Besides, children mustn't go outside without mommy watching every second or someone will call child protective services because the children are being neglected and endangered.

Those of us "of a certain age" did indeed grow up in a golden age.

I understand, i felt the fatigue and did not exercise much back in when I first went low carb. This time I'm okay and i had 1/2 cup of beans the past three days. Must help, thanks. We had a light rain and I wanted to try out my new waterproof jacket. Refreshing 3 mile walk woke me up for evening sparking.

The low carb flu is a period that usually occurs during the first week or so when you initially start a low carb diet. Your body is adjusting to switching from burning carbs to burning fat and you have symptoms similar to the flu like headache, fatigue, malaise, etc. It usually only lasts a few days at most. Any beans are fine. Sounds like you are doing great!

What is the "Low carb flu" ? Are some beans better than others?

So far---so good re-starting Phase one.

I was on a similar low carb plan Feb., March, & April down 35 pounds at WW and was steady 2-3 per week. Then I switched back to Tops, it cost less $4 vs $40 per month. I was worried it would be an adjustment and weight fluctuated in May but I lost 6 pounds total.

Thanks easy to write down and post on fridge. emoticon I went for it today by noon I had 1/2 gallon of water, 2 cups of mixed dark greens, raw asparagus stalks, 3oz turkey & one Brazil nut for my thyroid. I am going to will power through that emoticon
By seeing emoticon everyday in the fridge I will not buy another one. My Dh will be eating so much he won't buy one either.

Today I will change my ticker to re-start giving up sugary & starchy foods. Cravings are so devious emoticon I forgot that I was able to control them for 120 days and felt defeated.
I can and I will... kick the habit emoticon emoticon

That is it, pretty much. To repeat

No starchy veggies or grains or fruit in phase one.
You need 4.5 cups of veggies a day.
You need 2 dairy a day.
You need one half cup of beans every day.
You need 2 servings of healthy fats daily.
As much protein as you need to be satisfied. Start with 3 ounces.
3 snacks a day in phase one, you can go to 2 in phase two
No more than one serving of nuts a day and no more than 2 servings of cheese in phase one, one in phase two.
Dessert isn't required but most people try the ricotta creams.

The watermelon I have is huge and so good. DH thinks its the best. I will take a couple of days to finish off and start phase 1. I'm getting set-up and found this short list.

Looks similar to the Dr. Oz one day off diet I have been on since Feb. I have been doing without cheese or salad dressing for 4 months. Its just that darn good watermelon that has triggered cravings.

Here is the SBD Phase 1 in a nutshell:
* Breakfast--1/2 cup veggies (may be V8 Juice), and protein (like egg beater, eggs, or Canadian bacon)
* Snack--protein (nuts, cheese, beans, meat) may include veggies like sweet pepper scoop or celery sticks with peanut butter or Laughing Cow
* Lunch--2 cups veggies and protein (like chicken, beef, fish, lean pork) Snack--same as the morning (cottage cheese and cheese count as protein not as milk)
* Dinner--2 cups veggies and protein
* Dessert/snack--ricotta cream or something similar not just a sugar free jello (something with protein is best)

I didn't enjoy phase one but found it was really helpful for me at getting rid of cravings. I followed it to the letter and my son did too. He lost 13 pounds and I lost 10. I lost almost all of mine in the first week and he lost his in the second. He went on to lose 120 pounds and reach goal but he didn't stay there. He was actually too thin and had a body fat percentage of 15 and some of that was loose skin. I do okay with fruits but stall and gain with grains.

I'm starting Phase 1 tomorrow June 1st, after we finish the holiday watermelon emoticon

I have been eating low carb/fat & lean protein for the past 4 months, losing weight and controlling cravings. Exercise was regular but not intense until my DH and I stated power walking 10k/6.2 miles. I like the SP Map Route and after 4 times we increased trail to 7.5 miles. We are sticking to a plan of walking every other day and lifting weights 2-3x / week

The past 2 weeks I had small gains and thought I was gaining muscle. Until today I realized it was...watermelon, which is fine by itself but I found DH's stash of sweets.

Fruit sneaks up on me slowly but it does cause cravings. A few berries in my protein shake was okay but for the Phase 1 I'm avoiding fruit + cravings at the same time!

It sounds like you may have to use your days off to do some prep time. As far as wanting to eat at night this snack list might help you.

Today is day 4 for me on phase 1 and so far i am down 4.6 pounds. I had to cheat a bit yesterday due to donating blood. So now I am back on track. My only issue that I am having is making sure that I eat enough food in the day and to find time to prep the food for the following day. I work 2 jobs most days and that leaves limited time to cook since I am so tired. Does anyone have any suggestions for me. Also when I work an overnight shift I end up wanting to eat something sweet and I eat because I am bored. Any suggestions for that as well.

230 pounds: Get a pedicure

220 pounds: Get a new pair of pants

210 pounds: Get a new Hot Hula shirt

200 pounds: Buy a new series of books

190 pounds: Get a massage

180 pounds: Spend $250 on clothes

Bread is not allowed in phase one because almost all bread contains some kind of starch and or sugar. Check the ingredients. I have seen some unusual bread recipes and if it was made from something like eggs and cheese it would be allowed. Phase one is meant to jump start your weight loss and break your dependence on sugar and starch. You can post the ingredients if you want and I will look at them. If it contains things like wheat, rice, potato flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, etc. it's not allowed.

As long as it doesn't have sugar, like honey ham and brown sugar ham. A lot of Virginia Cured and Smoked Hams don't have sugar added.

It helps to have healthy foods on hand.

Fresh, frozen, or canned beans and veggies are allowed, as long as they don't have added sugar. Mushrooms are fine. You might rinse the foods though as you will take a hit on salt which can cause you to retain fluid.

Oh, its one of the salad dressing that my church sisters taught me that taste nice. Maybe i need to find alternate dressing that i can make at home.
Seems like i need to do daily marketing to prevent circumstances like today where i have no ingredient for salad..

Can i just check with all of you if canned food are allowed? i was thinking of adding can mushrooms into my salad. seeing that all varieties of mushroom are allowed..

Phase one is meant to wean you off of your dependence on sugar. Why do you feel you need sweet salad dressing? Even in phase 2 honey is something to avoid or eat rarely. You need dressings that have 3gms of sugar or less per 2 tbs serving of salad dressing and they should be made with canola or olive oil. A lot of commercial dressings fit in that area. Does your homemade dressing fall into that category? If you don't know you can plug it into a recipe base like sparkpeople and pull up the nutritional info. The less you cheat the better your weight loss.

The subsequent books had updated food lists. Pickles are just basically processed small cucumbers and water. You will take a hit on salt but some don't have added sugars and those are the ones to look for. What you generally are trying to avoid in phase one are sugar and starches.

It is to stay on plan during the eating holidays.

dill pickles are allowed or artificially sweetened pickles. Pickles with sugar added to them are not allowed - like sweet pickles. There are a couple of brands of artificially sweetened sweet pickles though.

Those childhood comfort foods really are tempting. I think it might be a good idea for you to do some research on those to find ways to make them as healthy as possible and make them yourself from time to time. It shouldn't take much to make them Beach friendly as they sound fairly Beachy already. That is what I have done with most of my family comfort foods. Life is too short to live it in deprivation. I hope you have a good phase one. Let us know how you do!

Thanks, Morticia. Yes, this weekend was probably not the best time to start. I had a stuffed cabbage, braised cabbage and Polish stew at the festival, the most healthy options there. I just couldn't pass up having some foods from my childhood that I only have a chance to eat once a year at most. So I don't think I did too badly today (except for the 2 lemon vodka shots!). Altho I could only estimate my calories, I think I kept within my range.

For the next 2 weeks, I don't have any social commitments that could get me into trouble, so I'll just add 2 days to my 2 weeks and I should be good to go.

It sounds like you will encounter a lot of challenges along the way. You might try eating before you go and take along some healthy snacks with you. Try to eat on plan as much as possible on phase 1 as it's only 2 weeks and is designed to get rid of cravings and jump start the weight loss. The rewards can be substantial. I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. My son lost 13. Good luck!

Well, I started Phase 1 yesterday and immediately veered off plan. After work, my husband wanted to go to a rib cookoff. Wonderful. The good news is that the samplers were so expensive, I refused to buy any. I had 1 small rib only, then insisted on going to a real restaurant and had broiled fish and asparagus. Yum! The bad news is that I had 2 alcoholic beverages. The OK news is that I was well within my calorie range for the day.

So.... today I am committed to going to a Polish food festival tonight. I know there will be little if anything beach-worthy there. I will do my best to make the best choices possible, and will not have any alcohol at all.

It seems like this may be the worst possible time to start phase 1, but my thinking is that there is always something that will come up to derail us. So I've decided to stick to the plan and if there are bumps in the road I will not let them derail me. Since this is a lifestyle, not a diet, I need to learn how to actually do it in real life with all its temptations!

The updated lists are on the sticky threads including the lists for the gluten free book which is the latest diet book and where they allow agave. The books change over the years as he writes new ones.He is less thrilled with grains now than he originally was but then more and more doctors are who keep up with the latest scientific info. We recommend that you count calories as you will still need to have a deficit to lose.

Thank you ... and I LOVE agave ... I have the book from 20 or so years ago ... and probably should borrow the updated book from so the library so I could 'check out' some of the 'newer' items that may be on the list. On Sunday, I can start Phase II.

Weight loss is not tremendous - but steady - so I'm happy(ish) ... was hoping for more weight loss, but I'll take what I can get.

Phase one is deigned to get rid of cravings and to break your dependence on sugar. Have you tried all of the sweeteners? You can have acesulfame k, agave 1tbs a day, aspartame, monk fruit no calorie sweetener, saccharin, stevia, truvia, sucralose. You can also have sugar alcohols but they can cause G.I distress.

Other allowable treats are sugar free candies, no sugar added chocolate powder, sugar free chocolate syrup, unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar free drink mix, sugar free frozen pops, no sugar added fudge pops, sugar free gelatin, sugar free gum, sugar free jams and jellies, sugar free syrup.

I'm not especially fond of the taste of artificial sweeteners either and my solution is to keep them to a minimum and get my sweet fix from fruit - in phase 2, of course. Phase one is only 2 weeks and if you follow the plan you most likely will be in for a significant weight loss. It is worth the sacrifice.

Hi everyone. . .I'm Heidi. This is the 2nd time I did South Beach - first time was years and years ago. I'm doing well, but would like to make the 'dessert' with the Ricotta, but I absolutely HATE the taste of ANY artificial sweetener. Is there any sweetener I might be able to use to eat this dessert?

I really wanted a little something the other night and tried this with ricotta and vanilla (no sweetener) - ... it just wasn't good.

After Saturday, I can/will begin eating fruit again. I'm REALLY looking forward to that.

Sorry to hear that you are not looking forward to the move! Moving is stressful but hopefully things will be looking up for you soon.

This is Day One of Phase One for me. So far so good. I feel great getting back on track. I was on vacation for a couple of days so I welcome being able to eat more healthy. I know the first 2 weeks are challenging but I CAN do it! I didn't weigh myself because I KNOW I gained. I don't want to plummet emotionally. Next week I may have the courage to weigh.

Losing weight is hard.
Maintaining weight is hard.

That is probably true, too. Only add that to the news we received last week that a my husband's company will relocate us has brought about some emo eating. I am too old to be relocated, again, or so I thought.

It's not uncommon for this to happen. You may have encountered a trigger. A lot of us found we were triggered. For me it was grains. I can't eat bread nor pasta.

Well, we got through the first two weeks, but we found out, last week, that adding a little bit back turns in to more and more slip ups. I enjoyed a 12 pound loss the first to weeks but a 1.5 pound gain from our first week of Phase 2. Checking our habits this week. Still having 1 fruit or 1 grain, but no more fudging!

Be sure your daughter is getting in her 1/2 cup of beans a day. Many people miss that this is part of the diet but it helps the low carb flu symptoms. So does getting in lots of fluids. We should be eating 4.5 cups of veggies a day, 2 low fat dairy, 2 servings of healthy fats, 2-3 snacks, and lean protein.

Your dessert sounded delicious. It really helps to try new South beach recipes. Kierae has put a lot of really great ones in the sticky threads if you need any inspiration.
