Congrats Jesse! Just remember that carbs aren't evil, its the quality of the carbs that you need to watch. In phase 2 you'll be adding the good stuff; go slow and you'll find out just how sensitive you are to carbs vs. the sugar, salt and processed starches.

Ok, I said I wasn't going to weigh myself until next week, but I felt like I had a good weekend as far as eating, so I wanted to check...down a pound! So that makes 2 pounds so far, which is great!

I'm feeling so much better too, and realizing how too many carbohydrates have really been making me feel crappy--water logged, bloated, yucky, and IMPOSSIBLE to any get weight off. I've just had some blood tests done to see if hypothyroidism is a possibility. If not, I'm convinced that I'm insulin-resistant (or a combo of the two). We shall see...

By the way...GOOD JOB EVERYONE!

I hate to admit this, but I don't eat before I workout becuz it makes me nauseous. I get out of work and head to Karate class in about an hour. So I don't eat. My last 'meal' on those days is around 1pm. So between 1 & 5 I eat nothing.

Low blood sugar? Sure, that's a possibility but when I get that I also get the shakes.

My reason for the "1 banana a day" is that I work on my feet all day, no carpeting or anything just a hard concrete floor. My legs cramp & ache something FIERCE-I'd wake up at night becuz the pain would be so bad! Bananas are high in potassium and I swear they help alleviate the cramping & achiness.

Unfortuneately I'm not a fan of PB, or nuts, for that matter. I bought a jar of the natural, organic PB last summer & 3/4s of it is STILL in the frig emoticon

I'm trailing a bit behind you guys - started P1 Monday but feeling good so far - no headaches, no cravings just dealing with getting enough calories in, I'm out of practice but promise to do better next week. I'll report in on weigh in Monday.

And I made this amazing mock leek and potato soup using cauliflower instead of the potatoes!

A banana huh - any chance it triggered you? I am curious - what do you eat BEFORE you work out (and how much time prior do you eat)? Is it possible your blood sugar was low (which can give you the same feeling). If you are going for a banana - do it with protein, ie some peanut butter. Help balance you out a bit.

These past couple of days have SUCKED! I've been on a binge. And I swear it came out of no where! It started Friday mrng. I had Karate class Thursday nite and it was INTENSE! Intense warm up(lots of plyo moves) and we did kicks. I seem to crave carbs after class and usually a banana is enough.

I'm digging my way out of the binge. Today was better. But I'm going back to D1 tomorrow.

So I am joining the thread a little late, I hope that's ok. I started SB on Sun 1/2/11 and have fallen in love with the program. The first few days I'll admit were rough but it has gotten much easier to skip the treats. My first week official weigh in is tomorrow morning, but unofficially, I have lost 7 pounds this week!

As of this morning I'm down 4 lbs. Yippee!
So far my appetite & cravings are under control, and my energy level is better. I'm thrilled that I didn't even experience my usual P1 headache.

I held off starting the 28 day bootcamp workout challenge until today. Along with 30 min. on the recumbent bike & 20 min. yoga. Hopefully that won't increase my appetite too much this week.

I can't wait for Phase 1.5 next week, when I can add back mixed berries with my yogurt for breakfast. Which I plan to do, unless I get irregular as sometimes happens, and then I'll need to add 1/2 C. Fiber One cereal instead.

I promise I'll try some new recipes next week to get out of my food rut. I've never tried the Kale chips yet. Have a great weekend all!

This week was more of an easing in or a "Phase 0.5" week for me. I'm struggling with emotional eating and I haven't been good with the social pressure to eat up leftover holiday treats. Next week will be a good "Phase 1", I hope, after using the weekend for some planning. I don't feel like much of a leader right now, but each day -- NO, each meal -- is another opportunity to make a better choice than the last one. Here's to baby steps forward.

So many of us have the first week under our belts officially today. How did we all do? Personally, I went down a pound which is all I expected. Got my water and tracking back on board. Just got back on the treadmill yesterday emoticon

Take this weekend, and peruse some recipes. It is clear many of us get caught in food ruts. So lets challenge ourselves to try something new. There is a thread just for phase 1 in our recipe section. Or if you are a foodie like me, I have a gazillion food blogs I read so my goal is to find something to inspire me. Let us know what you have tried and if it was a success/flop/etc..

Hi All: I started Phase 1 on 1/1/11, too but just saw this challenge thread today! Hope it's not too late to join in.

Thank goodness, too, I have to say: have been feeling kind of alone in the Phase 1-ing and am so glad to find others going through it, too. Whew. Good luck to us all!

Losing those last 10 lbs. are always slow going, but seem to return really fast.

Your workouts look emoticon
I will be easing my way slowly back into working out at least an hour a day after I'm done with Phase 1. My appetite always increases tremendously as soon as I start strength training.

I am going to choose a "food rut" temporarily. I have been doing some emotional eating lately -- leftover holiday sweets and Bailey's Irish Cream have been my downfall -- and so I am going to resort to making my own frozen meals again like I did when I had to travel for work back in April. This way I can eat safely on-program and put my energy into getting my emotions under control.

We've had a bit of warm weather and so I'm really hoping I can go out for a run this weekend without risking icy sidewalks. If not a run, then I'm going to go swim lanes. That should help, too.

Sometimes a routine is boring, but sometimes it provides stability. The nice thing about making South Beach a lifestyle is that you can do either as need be.

I started Phase One on 1/1/11 too! Like most of you, I'm not new to the South Beach either. Though I try to stick with Phase Three, I have gotten waaay off track...thus my 13 lb (blah) weight gain. I have found it is the most effective diet for me, and I feel the best when I'm following the diet correctly.

I've lost a about a pound so far...weight loss is so hard for me, especially since I don't have much to lose and I'm very active. Oh well...slowly but surely!

Think I'm eating too many nuts (natural PB, almonds...etc.)...too many nuts and cheese seems to always be my problem!

Way to go on resisting the pizza! I am a "food run" kinda gal. I get a hankering for something and eat it everyday till I burn out or something else crosses my path. I do pretty much eat an omelet and a salad everyday since it normally covers all of my veggies. Mind you normal people would call my omelet veggies w/eggs or a fritatta but it rarely looks like a true omelet..lol.

I also cook just for myself 90% of the time so I eat wwhatever I cook until its gone (or freeze half after eating it for 2 days).

I'm a rut dweller, too.

How is everyone doing? Are the cravings getting easier?

Today there was free pizza in the kitchen at work at lunchtime and I walked RIGHT past it to get my healthy food out of the fridge! Wasn't sure I could do it, but I did!

Great idea!

I'm definitely one of those rut dwellers. lol!
I tend to eat the same thing everyday for breakfast, lunch & snacks depending on the season, and changing up only my dinner daily.

It seems that too much variety in my menu stimulates my appetite.

Good morning folks! How is everyone doing?

So as I was NOT sleeping in the middle of the night, I thought that it would be a great idea that we all post our menus (can be daily or weekly/whatever) that we have eaten on this thread:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=-1x318x2295R>6672

It will help new folks and each other to get some ideas. I know that sometimes looking at one's tracker really doesn't help explain what the heck you are eating. This might help some of us get out of a rut and inspire to try to change things up!

Whatcha think?

Phase 1 is a learning experience. With time, you will learn to get back on track much quicker (or manage to resist those temptations totally). Baby steps and progress!

P1 is only the first step on the journey. Take it one baby step at a time and trust in the process. Adaptation is the key in making this way of eating a lifestyle.

Had a bad day yesterday. Didn't go over in my calories, but did have sugar. It was due to not planning ahead (having my dinner made so I could grab it when I got home and take it with me), and emotional eating. I cut and pasted my note from my nutrition tracker below... you don't have to read it (very boring) but I'm back on track today!

Wow. You can see what happened, I caved to some peppermint bark that was in the kitchen at work. Then when I got home, the ex had picked up the boy after his work, then dropped him off at my house when I got home from work, about 2 minutes before karate. Boy started having a meltdown, did not want to go to karate. I thought he might be hungry, but his dad said he had a PB & honey sandwich. We were in the car but I knew I couldn't take him to karate in that state. Driving around, we went to pinkberry. I had the original (greek yogurt), but it had sugar in it. Then once I had sugar, I wanted more: yum, a coffee from Starbucks. I got a tall skinny caramel macchiato. I was tempted by the pumpkin scone; luckily I didn't get it, and my boy would not share his choc chip cookie w/me b/c I'm on a diet! (good boy). Upset w/myself that I had sugar while on day 4 of P1 South Beach. I can see how it happened though... I can't even have a little nibble, then I want more.

ps - I had 2 pieces of peppermint bark. I have no idea how many ounces that was, just stuck in 4 oz. I hope it was not more! emoticon

I have found in easing back in that I'm still struggling with enough calories so that is what I will work on for the remaining days on P1 - if I had that problem all the time I wouldn't be here would I? LOL

You can also increase your protein size - right now you are doing 3 ounces and you can easily increase it to 4 ounces. Between doing that and cooking with olive oil, it will help boost the calories.

Same thing here. I usually lose my appetite along with my cravings by day 3.

1st make sure and eat all the necessary servings of the Phase 1 allowed foods such as; protein, vegs, dairy spread out over the day with 3 meals & 2 snacks. Then if you're not already doing so, add 1 oz. of nuts or 2 TBS. nut butter & 1/3 - 1/2 C. beans to one or two of your meals or snacks, plus add some additional olive oil to cook your vegs., on your salads or to cook your eggs in.

Also don't forget that you can have up to 100 calories of sugar free sweet treats daily too.

That should be enough to do the trick to keep you within your required calorie range of at least 1200 calories and out of starvation mode while still losing weight.

Best Wishes!

Never thought I'd say this, but having trouble getting enough calories in.

First of all I'm surprised I'm sticking with this (I know, it's only day 4!). But usually if I'm hungry I will go downstairs at work and get a cookie and a coffee. I have not been hungry on South Beach.

But, I am concerned about the calories because I don't want my body to go into starvation mode. It's hard for me to fit my veggies in, but even if I add more veggies it doesn't add very many calories.

Maybe I should just be quiet since it's working for me... and be thankful!

Thanks for your help guys

It seems all the additional members in the New Year are bogging down the site today and it is moving incredibly slow. Also I'm having issues trying to save items to my tracker to update it.

Luckily that's the only headache that I'm experiencing so far in Phase 1.

Best Wishes to you all as we continue on together!

Remember: check the ingredients, not the nutritional data. Both yougurts use tapioca in minute amounts but that is pretty standard amongst many of the flavored yogurts. The vanilla looks fine but thevstrawberry isn't due to the fruit.

Yesterday I made a BIG pot of Chock Full Of Veggies Chili (pg 224 of SuperCharged). I LOVE that chili!

I like the Oikos plain yogurt. I've tried the others (Fage, etc) and they were just too bitter. Oikos is good, tho.

I have a question about yogurt. I also eat the Dannon Light N Fit Carb & Sugar Control yogurt.
4 0z cups
45 cals
1.5g fat
10mg chol
25mg sod
75mg pot
3g carbs
1g sugar
5g protein
It comes in vanilla & strawberry. I prefer the vanilla, tho. Is this yogurt OK? I'm hoping it is becuz I REALLY like it as a sweet treat, a couple days a week.

Day 3 today!

Yogurt options: crystal light, sf jello powder (about 1 tbsp), diet cocoa, sf syrups, cinnamon/splenda/vanilla, sf jelly (not jam) or you can go savory and make a dip for your veggies (mix with dry ranch dressing or herbs/seasonings)

I love plain yogurt but you can mix in grated cucumber, some dill and walnuts. Or crystal light powder. Or unsweetened cocoa, Splenda and some slivered almonds. There are oodles of options.
