Hi Cindy, I'm glad to have you here! I hope you find it helpful.

I am doing pretty well this week...I hope everyone else is too. I like the 5/7 philosophy (always aim for 7 but sometimes...) and I haven't felt too water logged.

I am a bit late for this challenge, with memorial weekend only days away now, but will follow the water, food intake, etc. rules. Even a late start is better than a no start!

Although I think my arms have actually firmed up a bit in the last couple of weeks just from carrying my grandson, it may be the 4th of July before I'm willing to go sleeveless.

Actually that's going to be my next 6 wk. challenge. I'm going to be doing a combination of Slim in 6 & the Firm Wave to tone up all over and hopefully get back to 145 lbs. by Independence Day.

Slimnana, It is wonderful that you get to spend time with your grandchildren. My girls are still in college but look forward to the time when I can enjoy my own.

Agree about the time left before Mem. Day. I checked out my arms out in the mirror today--the definition is getting better but I'm still not sure if it's enough for sleeveless shirt weather (not that it would ever stop me).

Aliegh gives herself the hiccups ALOT. Thank god she will take water (my kids refused) which helped settle it down. I can only imagine how your arms felt. She is only 9 pounds but I know at some point I am going to have major issues due to my shoulder replacements. Cross that bridge when we get there!

Thanks KIERAE, I love having them close by now. It was so hard with the first two when they lived 7 hrs. away. I felt I had missed out on so much of them while they were infants.

I babysat for the two younger ones again today, so the other set of grandparents could go to the 4 yr. olds dance recital.
The little guy will be 8 wks. tomorrow and is probably close to 14 lbs. already! No wonder my arms & shoulders have been sore this week. He just started laughing last week, except each time he does he gives himself the hiccups.

Have a good evening all!

Happy Friday all,

Vacations & weekends are my biggest challenges also. I consider maintaining any weight loss during those times as an achievement in themselves. This weekend my husband is out of town, so I should be able to do well staying on plan to not regain the couple of pounds I lost this week.

I had a fun but exhausting day yesterday watching all three grand kids by myself for the first time. It was my daughter in-laws first attempt back to work since having my grandson 7.5 wks. ago. I've updated my photos of them from yesterday on my page. In the photo my grandson looks almost as big as his 23 lb. 2 yr. old sister. The 4 yr. old is in her first dance recital this weekend, so I posted a photo of her in her costume (minus the black fishnet stockings she has to save for the show). They grow up too fast, don't they?

Only one week left until Memorial Day weekend and the official start of sleeveless tops....Yikes!!! I better get out the hand held weights to tone up these flabby arms of mine and fast.

Have a good weekend all!

Liquorlady - least it was sourdough which is not as offensive as regular white bread. The sourdough component is said to digest slower so therefore not so bad!

I am hanging in there. School is crazy right now and the kids do not want to learn anymore. I am not sure why May triggers this in teenagers. However, my third week of health is going strong.

Hanging in, but nothing's happening. I'm working as hard on not considering myself a failure since I didn't get all the weight off in time for the wedding next weekend, as I am at the gym. On the other hand, I think I'm still lighter than I was three years ago when most of these people last saw me.

And pitfalls lurk. Last night I had dinner with the girls, and the only good news was that I had only one glass of wine. Not a veggie in sight, and I wolfed down this wonderful sourdough as though I hadn't seen bread in...well, however long it's been since I've seen bread. I learned this morning that Saturday night I'll be at an interfaith dinner hosted by the members of the Muslim community, and I'm trying to find out the menu -- while I know there won't be ham, I do know that I could run into some real problems. While there are always great suggestions about bringing your own and all that, not all of that works so well especially in interfaith settings where religious dietary restrictions can reach into not only what things, but how things are prepared, and indeed their sources, and goodness knows what else, not to mention good manners as a guest and accepting very gracious hospitality. I don't even want to think about the desserts, which are likely to be wonderful baked or fried pastries drenched in honey. sigh

Hmmm I googled and went and watched the videos on The Wave. It looks like it could be great exercise as a rocker but not sure about using it as a step.

Hows everyone doing?

I was glad to see my scale start moving in the right direction this morning. I may just get to see 152 for Memorial Day after all!

This morning after a little more practice rocking on the Wave, I thought I would at least preview the workout dvd that is suppose to be primarily rocking rather than stepping. Although it is called "Rock Off", the majority of the 40 min. workout was the usual FIRM workout using the wave upside down as a step or box stepping, bouncing, lunging & leg lifting all around the damn thing, rather than actually rocking on it. I am so disappointed, I don't know whether to send the whole thing back or just try and use it more like a portable elliptical rocker for cardio while holding light hand held weights.

Back to add that my firm "Wave" arrived today already from QVC! I opened it right up and put in the 10 min. instructional dvd and I think I'm going to grow to love this thing. Sorta like the old saying "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger". First things first though, I'm planning to ease myself into a few practice sessions this week to really get my balance perfected and loosen up the old joints, so I don't injure myself. I think I'm going to sit it in front of the T.V. and just practice rocking back and forth on it slowly while watching American Idol tonight.

I'll let you know how it goes.

emoticon on your focus!

Even though AF arrived this morning, I'm feeling great since being back on plan this month. I didn't experience any of my usual PMS bloat and my TOM actually snuck up on me. I only realized it was this week after double checking the calender this past Sunday, because I was wearing white capris to the baby shower. (some habits never die)

I hope to have things well under control with my weight once and for all before I start the menopause craziness. Something to look forward to just in case being hypothyroid for the last five years wasn't a difficult enough challenge for me to deal with.

Have a good day staying focused!

Thanks for your nice wishes! I did run with the Girls and felt a bit like a girl myself. It was a really nice day.

I splurged on Saturday (cake included) and was able to hop right back to the Beach on Sunday. Our Mother's Day cookout was mostly grilled meat and lots of veggies.

Today has been good too and my weight and stomach are already going back in the right direction ;) I am so impressed by my focus this month. Thanks!

Hope you all had a happy Mother's Day!

It's hard to believe there are only two weeks left until Memorial Day. At this point, I'll be happy if I can get back to 155 by then with TOM being this week.

I'm curious about Wave-let me know how you like it. I have one FIRM DVD (Supercardio) and like it for occasional use when I have to work out at home but do modify some of the exercises because it pounds a bit on my knees.

I don't think I added enough coffee to make it taste enough of mocha but is was still very good--I am going to make it stronger next time. I did try the Frappuccino with the vanilla whey and some strong coffee yesterday and that was really great too. I sprinkled cinnamon on top. Mmmmm.

I turn 50 tomorrow and am getting a tree for my yard, not a car ;) I plan to have a little cake (not very Phase 1 of me!) at dinner but plan to eat in a focused SB way for the rest and hope to keep things steady enough that I'm not struggling again by Sunday. The week has gone very well.

I did EFX at the gym today wearing my heart monitor (keeps me honest about making sure I stay in the right zone--tend to get lazy otherwise!). I am doing the Run For The Girls tomorrow. (400 girls age 8-14 trained for their first 5k)

KIERAE, the "Wave" may not be good for you with your foot issues. Foot pain was the one negative that concerned me the most in reading the reviews. The only other negative comments came from experienced and advanced Firm users, because it wasn't a difficult enough workout for them. Which is why I thought is sounds like it should be perfect for me! I always found the Firm's other step workouts too hard on my knees. I'll let you know how I like the "Wave" after I receive it the end of next week.

MYMARMEE, Thanks for your kind words. I was totally surprised by my husband with the present. Funny thing was my first response was, "Where are the grandkids going to sit?"

Did the chocolate whey make it taste like a mocha frozen frap?

It sounds like you've been on track since starting back. Good for you. It looks like you have a very active lifestyle as a hiker from your page. I've been pretty much a sloth this year.

I just ordered the Firm's "Wave" from QVC last night. It looks like it should be a fun workout. It's suppose to be a great cardio, core, butt & thigh workout that you can hold hand held weights with for an upper body workout. I just hope I don't kill myself if I lose my balance.

Slimnana--Love your spark page and your birthday present! I modified the frappuccino a little bit and made it with chocolate whey. It was good and satisfying and just what I needed. Thank you.

The week has been good so far (My week 1 but week 2 for everyone else). It takes focus to be completely successful--the Sunday prep idea helped. I was starting to let things slide after a couple years of SB so it helps to renew my commitment.

Did a walk/run this morning and the recumbent bike.

No kidding, you probably look better than the average teenager these days! You have the tiniest waist and butt of any grandma I've ever seen in a two piece before.

What an inspiration you are for this formally slim Nana to get her butt back in shape again also. That was one thing I did notice when I was faithfully doing the program last year and down to 138 the end of April, my butt did just about disappear like never before.

Unfortunately my husband is a butt man, and he actually started nagging me to firm it up because it was too flat. At my son's wedding last end of May, I was back up to 145 already and my butt still looked completely flat in all the side photos. Not so anymore that's for sure! The last 15 lbs. that I regained this year has gone straight to my butt and thighs.

Healthier fat or not, I've got to get if off again.

Yummo on the frappaccino! That sounds great - will have to try that. I am with you - I like my fruit in my yogurt. Although I do make my smoothies with 1/2 cup of the yogurt to boost up the protein count but I also use the crystal light packet for flavoring.

Now that the weather is warming up a bit here, I will start my day having vanilla whey protein mixed in a blender with coffee, splenda & ice. It tastes just like a Starbucks frozen frappuccino. (I would have never guessed that's how it's spelled)

I know a lot of people like to add fruit to their protein shakes, but I'd rather save my one allowed fruit to have with my yogurt.

I'm finally feeling back in control of my cravings after my birthday/anniversary celebrations in April.

I did pretty well this last weekend even with celebrating my younger son's 28th birthday on Sunday. I'm hoping that If I do P1 through the rest of this week, I can drop at least a couple of pounds before this weekend, when I will be attending his wife's baby shower. She's expecting a boy in July, which will make me Nana of two girls & two boys.

If for nothing else, I need to get back in shape to keep up with the four of them.

Thanks KIERAE. I'm opting for a protein shake that is very low glycemic to start the day...I will switch off to some others non-traditional breakfast choices if I get bored. I like oats with a little no-sugar peanut butter and will return to it once Phase 1 is done.

Thank you for the motivation. I'm doing well so far and especially good with the water. It is amazing when I am focused that I can feel my tummy shrinking within only a couple days (I'm an 'apple'). My little black composition book is working pretty well to record stuff. If I had to enter online I would have given up the first day.

I did the efx and rower today and afterward, my Tai Chi teacher showed up at the gym unexpectedly, so I did Tai Chi too. It was a nice to be off work today so I could do this.

Have a great day!

Mary

Mymarmee - that link was from the p1 team. All the recipes are p1. I know some do have eggs but there were other options. Remember you can eat non traditional breakfast foods - don't lock yourself in to it has to be "breakfast". And it is only 2 weeks!

Kierae--Thank you for the link. I took a look and still need a little hand-holding. They all seem more Phase II to me and most include eggs as an ingredient (except maybe the blast drink with low sugar soy milk) and think I must be missing something. I don't mind lowfat cottage cheese as an option but was hoping for another idea or two.

I did a half marathon yesterday so did an easy walk and used the recumbent bike at the gym today.

Week 2 -- Starting this week off kinda rocky. Messed up my hand last week, and messed up my shoulder yesterday giving my Lab a bath. But last week was good! Lots of zumba at the gym : ) I think I'll spend today trying to plan for the rest of the week, and let my shoulder recover

So today is WEEK 2! How is everyone doing? This week, let's try to push the exercise component. How about we make a lofty goal of burn a pound this week. Can you exercise 3500 calories this week? It sounds daunting for some folks (including myself..lol) but hey - no matter what we do end up with at the end of the week will be beneficial!

So continue with the tracking, the water and let's get physical! (Don't worry - I won't launch into Olivia Newton John's song but I do now have the thing stuck in my head!). emoticon

I have my log started (it is a tiny composition book I keep in my purse)--the easiest to make sure everything gets tracked.

Things are going well so far--it helped to focus my menu for the week (thanks to the ongoing reminders throughout the SB threads to prepare on Sunday).
Logging in today I realize I'm already behind on my water and will get cracking on it!

I would appreciate non-egg or non-tofu breadfast ideas you have for Phase I. Thanks.

Mary

Are you up for a new member in this challenge? Looks like I'm not too far behind for the 4 week challenge. I wrote in my journal just last week that my goal for May is to refocus my healthy eating and the message board in this challenge looks helpful.

I started using SB in about 2005 and think I may need to start at Phase 1 again. You are right, it is time to get out the tape measure and the food log.

Not great with water, but the day's not over yet. Everything else quite okay. No exercise...not feeling physically up to it.

Odd pressure in the chest...anyone ever have that? No heart or respiratory stuff - already checked off the list. Very strange....

You can use canola oil instead of EVOO if you want to scramble/fry your eggs. Or if you like flax oil - you can do that as a supplement. Just getting in the healthy oils will help boost the calories and provide you the good fats we all need. And I wouldn't worry about your carb numbers as long as they are the "good SB" ones. I would expect a vegetarian's carbs to be higher. emoticon

I too will add olive oil to my eggs. Well, I will try it. You mean just fry them in it?
I am not a huge fan of EVOO, but I will keep trying...more so for health reasons.
I did great with water and exercise, but am a little over on carbs.
Hard for me when I don't eat meat.

I'm in for the challenge... sorry I didn't know about it sooner.

I'm definitely getting my water in today... not my food. Bad choice day.

Tomorrow I will have to make better choices though and get back on track!!

Oh I'm definitely going to add olive oil to my omelettes in the morning... because I have a hard time getting in all my calories.

I'm still hoping to lose 10-15 pounds by the end of this challenge, but we'll see!!

KIERAE, hadn't heard about the magic 4 week number before it's an official plateau. Sounds logical, however, the way you describe it.

Today was great...finally got to a new restaurant in town that had a great reputation for good food (and veggie) but horrible service. Well, now the service is great, too! Had a chickpea salad on spinach that was to die for! Just that there was wayyy too much of it. I swear there was a full cup of chickpeas plus at least another 3/4 to full cup of black beans. Holy protein, Batman!! Had to leave some of it, after all.

At least now I know there's a place in town that serves Beachy food!! Hurray!!

And got my 8th glass of water in at lunch! Way ahead of the game. Yay!

Amy:

Dear girl - get the 4 1/2 cups of veggies in. You have undoubtedly stalled out your metabolism just by looking at your tracker. Breakfast is more than 2 eggs - cook those eggs in a tsp of olive oil. Add 1/2 cup of veggies to them and boost up your breakfast calories.

Actually cooking with olive oil on any meal where you can will help boost. Add another cup of dairy - you can have up to 3 cups on phase 2. Add PROTEIN - increase the portion sizes or add it to your breakfast routine if you are doing eggs.

Add a half cup of beans - will add some fiber to your diet.

You NEED to be eating 3 meals and 2 snacks in phase 2. Wake up your metabolism because otherwise it will work against you.

Doing good so far.. getting in water and exercise. Coming up on a month full of celebrations; cinco de mayo, parents anniversary, sisters bday, grandmas 80th bday, sisters graduation, and friends coming to visit who love to drink, and the house is full of crap food and its so hot mom has turned to take out so we don't heat up the house cooking......... SO I am focusing on what I can control, portions, and getting to the gym. Hopefully thats enough : )

k lets not call it a plateau yet...lol. Plateau is 4 weeks. Anything less may be your metabolism settling in. Another reason to take measurements because some folks see tape measure losses when the scale quits moving - its like the body has to catch up to the weight loss.

Well, day 1 (yesterday) was really good. Had to force myself to eat enough cals for the day, but enjoyed a bit of yogurt, and some almonds and that did the trick! All in all a good day. Got the water, and almost done same for today. Eating has been excellent. Trying to be VERY mindful. And it's working! Yay!

Speaking of plateaus, I have hit one... I stalled in my weight loss as I approached the end of P1, so I'm being extremely careful in how I add stuff back in through the initial stages of P2 for obvious reasons. So far so good.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 25th,

On the measurements: just track them for yourself. It is really good to keep a set so if you hit a plateau on weight, you can see if the tape measure is changing. If you go to My Tools/Start/ you will see where you can record your measurements.

I'm in! I will have to get my measurements later! My goal is to lose 15 pounds by Memorial Day! With the first 10 by the 12th of May!
It's huge I know, but with me just starting Phase 1 if I work really hard it may be doable!

Ugh day one was not good. The only plus was a worked out! but I only got in a little over half my water...and then the family decided we should go have sushi how was I to say no? and I don't like sashimi..I like my raw fish in small portions and surrouned by other stuff like rice and nori lol.

I feel like poo today...exhausted even though I got in 7 hrs of sleep. I think it may be dehydration because not only did I not get in all my water but we went in the hot tub for an hour or so and i've heard the heat can dehydrate you as well. I'm at work today so my lunch is packed and the plus side is I can't leave so there no eating anything but what I brought.

I will cook one of my healthy SB meals I have planned for the week and make sure I'm good all day. An occasional cheat meal or day is going to happen from time to time so I need to not beat myself up. I'll learn from it and move on.

I'm in, too, but what measurements are we taking? Or does it matter? I guess my hps and waist are of the greatest concern.

And here's another question for you: When IS Memorial Day?? I'm in Canada and we don't celebrate that holiday. LOL

Alright so those who are going for weight loss should have weighed themselves to establish their starting point. You also need to take a set of measurements so break out that tape measure! Sometimes we don't see scale results and you may see it on the tape measure.

So the Mini Challenge for this week:

CHALLENGE #1

TRACK THE FOOD YOU EAT. RECORD OR LOG EVERY THING YOU EAT. STAY IN YOUR CALORIE RANGE 5/7 DAYS. Even better is to WORK that calorie range - shake up that metabolism!

Give yourself a emoticon every day you stay in your calorie range.

Remember to add in those condiments, small pieces of candy, that one taste. Those calories can add up fast.

It it passes the lips it is recorded on the hips and hopefully on paper/computer.

CHALLENGE #2

The second challenge is let's see if we can get in our eight glasses minimum.

4 cups between breakfast & lunch emoticon
4 cups between lunch & dinner emoticon

Water is very important to us getting fit (and for our joints), so people let's get water logged!!!

You can use this thread on a daily basis to post on. I will still be posting daily challenges so those will help supplement!

Let's do it!

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie
