I don't usually use recipes - just cook the grains in some kind of salt-free broth, fat free broth with transfat free margarine, and herbs/seasonings like pepper, onion powder, garlic, saffron, etc. and add whatever kinds of cooked veggies I have.

My favorites are probably whole wheat couscous and quinoa.

I don't like millet either and even some birds don't. Some brands of Kashi I've tried have too much millet in them and it ruins it.

I'm not sure if its the millet or something else, but my "Ancient Grains" bread with it in it is a bit bitter. My grandparents lived in a town called Millet, but I'm not sure if its actually grown around here or not.

The only one I didn't care for was millet - it just is too much like bird seed (because HELLO - it is used for bird seed..haha).

Some of the whole grains listed here are ones I haven't tried such as
* whole rye
* bulgar
* amaranth (except in bread)
* millet (except in bread)
* quinoa (except in bread)

I'm going to challenge myself to try new whole grains. Thanks, Kierae!

Happy Thursday to you!

We hear that whole grains are great for our bodies. Do you know why? Here are some things to consider:

*Most of us know that fruits and vegetables contain beneficial phytochemicals and antioxidants, but many do not realize that whole grains are often an even better source of these key nutrients.

*Whole grains are a good source of B vitamins, Vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and fiber, as well as other valuable antioxidants not found in some fruits and vegetables.

*Whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by decreasing cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood coagulation.

*Whole grains may also help regulate blood glucose in people living with diabetes.

*Other studies have also shown that people who consume more whole grains consistently weigh less than those who consumed less whole grain products.

Where can you find whole grains? Try some of these:

* wild rice
* brown rice
* whole wheat
* oatmeal
* whole oats
* barley
* whole rye
* bulgar
* popcorn
* amaranth
* millet
* quinoa

In gearing up for Ch National Red Day, your challenge is to try to EAT WHOLE GRAINS today. I know some folks dieting can not tolerate many "carbs" but getting in whole grains (versus processed foods) for those carbs you can do is important for your heart.

Have a FIBER FILLED Thursday!
