It was Christmas 2009, we had a bad lightening storm that knocked out the power in our entire neighborhood. Dinner (rib roast) was in the oven cooking and was almost done when the power went out. Unfortunately, the oven cooled off before the roast finished cooking. Once the storm was over, we started the grill up and finished cooking the rib roast on the grill. After dinner (yes...the power was STILL out), we decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. Many of our neighbors were out walking too! Everybody took the time to stop and chat with one another and talk about how their meals were being cooked or what they were planning as a back up. Some overheard conversations and offered to share their fully cooked meals with those who had not finished cooking. Everyone was laughing and telling about their favorite Christmas stories as we stood there in the streets and we all agreed that THIS one would be in all of our favorites forever. Still is one of our favorites of all time because people were out and about, talking to each other and sharing with one another on such a special day. One of the men we admired so much for his work in the community and in his work passed away soon after but we have such sweet memories of him laughing with us and sharing in our holiday. Well, yesterday being 4th of July (the holiday thread actually works)...I have some good memories of 4th of July(s) watching the fireworks on the hill with my son...or on a beach or at a baseball game...down by the water with someone I loved when I was young...
This year, eh. It rained on and off and we did only a few fireworks, but it was ok. The best thing about this year is it is the first year it wasn't about food for me. I've never meant to make holidays about food, but I did...the grilling, the desserts, making dishes that are family traditions...this year I made egg salad and I had yummy fresh juice and a protein drink...so good, but not "about the food" and I rode my bike and listened to music and spend time with the kids and actually relaxed...
I can't remember the last time I relaxed and did nice things for me on a holiday. Usually it is cooking the food and cleaning the house and shopping etc...and the holiday is secondary to making it all happen.
2. We celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. I remember the grown up always playing cards while us kids would try to fall asleep. We would wake up with Santa's bells ringing on top of the floor with the reindeer.
