I too have been having a little trouble with mine. Very unusual for me to have problems during a workout and I did.

I'm having a tough time with my asthma the past few days. I think my allergies are really affecting me. Haven't been able to work out for a few days and I really want to, so I'm going to use my inhaler and try again. Wish me luck!

I'm just joining this group as I'm need help and support dealing with my exercise and asthma flair-ups. I was doing really well for over 6 weeks, exercising daily and losing weight, but I had a major flair-up last week and it continues to linger. I have been unable to walk since the 19th. I've continued to stick to my nutrition wellness so my weight has remained the same. Any suggestions on ANY type of exercise I can do until my asthma abates?

As for me I am struggling as well. I have been battling the flu these past few days and it's really been hard with my three kids. Luckily my mom helped me by keeping them last night but ready for them to be home with me tonight. Hang in there and we can all make it.

I've been feeling so down because the past month or so I've been ill with walking pneumonia and its been triggering asthma attacks. I took advantage of feeling ill and just ate whatever I wanted to make me feel better. I'm finally starting to feel better now and watching what I'm eating, and my body is anxious to start working out again but I know I haven't recuperated enough yet and its frustrating. I don't want to do too much too soon, but I feel like I really need to work out badly.

I had surgery last Thursday and the RT and nurses were concerned because my O2 sat was so low. They had trouble weaning me off O2. Finally, the doctor released me, I used Proair when I got home and my O2 sat improved. I am glad I have my own O2 sat finger monitor now. I discovered that I had learned a lot about asthma and how to listen to my body. So far so good with the breathing, but the pain...

Going on Two weeks out of the hospital and I still had this pain on my right side. Went to the doc and had some exrays. I have three fractures ribs and probably more hairline fractures, from coughing! Are you kidding me? Oh and there isn't much they can do about fractured ribs except wrap it. Awesome, I have two small children that don't know how to NOT jump up on Mommy.

Good news though. Despite the fractured bones, The Doc approved light yoga. It's not a big calorie burner, but it's a start. I think all this refrain from exercise has put me in a funk. I'm happy to start up again.

I am also dragging around with it myself. I have had the cough and cold symptoms now for over a couple of months due to changes in the weather and I am so sick of it as well. I constantly have a piece of candy in my mouth to help with coughing and keeping my throat wet. It's just about all I can do. Now I am also trying to make sure my baby girl doesn't get any sicker as well because she also now has a runny nose and a slight cough as well. YIKES!

I've had an asthma day. Not acute. But, oh boy, it does drag you down. As often happens, I didn't quite realize what was wrong at first. Just knew that every step was like walking through knee deep mud. I did my workout, and it was a struggle; a struggle to do it, a struggle not to quit in the middle of it; and then a struggle to get my breath after I finished. It was at that point that I recognized what it all was; not enough air because of asthma.

Bleck.

As soon as I was weaned off the prednisone, I had another flare-up and am really having trouble breathing now. I want to keep up my cardio exercise but right now I have trouble walking from room to room in my home. So sick of being sick! My mind says "go" but my body says "whoa".

I am having a tough time with my asthma now. It is hard to get my breathe with basic activities and haven't been to the gym in 2 weeks. It is frustrating to not be able to work out. My painful joints are feeling better on the prednisone!

I don't have that problem because with my asthma and when it gets bad I usually end up in the hospital so I learned real quick to take it easy because I hate the hospitals.

I have this over developed sense of responsibility and I often find myself afraid to stop working out if I need to because of asthma. It's usually in group activities because I'm afraid of giving myself leverage to use as an excuse. I don't want it to lead to me siting out because I'm tired and say it's my asthma. It's kinda problematic because my instuctors often have to tell me to stop doing something. I was wondering if anyone else had a problem with this?

About a week and a half ago, I finally got myself back in the gym. I managed a 30min fast walk/ jog interval workout on the treadmill and was so proud of myself. The next workout two days later was a bit harded, and right thereafter, I had extreme fatigue and what felt like early cold symptoms (including my throat breaking out in spots) for a full week.

So, after sitting out a week, I returned to the gym yesterday, and did an even better interval workout. Lo and behold the next day I'm starting to feel congested and tired all over again. I guess the exercise is causing my asthma to act up.

I'll have to pick my doctor's brain on Thursday about how to deal with this. I already take approximately 5 medications for allergies and asthma, so will not be pleased if another is piled on.

Do you homeschool him Robin?

I invested in the hepafilter vaccum that helped me breath easier in my house. I am more allergy induced with my asthma than exercise. Good luck.

My daily struggles is getting my housework done and my son's school lesson finished.

I have a really hard time getting motivated to do either. The housework is the worst. I know that as soon as I turn on the vaccum, I am going to be out of breath and close to passing out before I even get one small area done. I don't mind do housework, but it just takes so much out of me. KWIM?

Then there is my son. He is 7 and he hates to sit and do "school". This too takes a lot our of me. But at least I can breath.

Love that prednisone! I'm right in the middle of a 20 day taper and I hate this stuff, I'm irritable, crabby, bloated, depressed - Oh, yeah, but I can breathe!!!!
So, my DH said to me that the prednisone takes the wrinkles away! YIPPIEE that's kind of a back handed compliment.
Anyway, Everybody make sure you bundle your nose and mouth when ever you go out in the cold and stay healthy and wash wash wash your hands! I've been in and out of E.R.s 3 times in the past 6 weeks, they finally kept me for a couple days this last visit, I just got out Friday.
Praise for my Asthma Dr! He gave me over $500 in treatments, tests and meds at no charge because I'm a self pay patient.
Have a great Holiday to everyone and lets start the new year off on a healthy foot! or LUNG!

I couldn't agree more. the changing weather is the pits. I really wish we'd get a good rain and just clean the air but not yet. It is colder so the house is closed up tight and that helps me some. The first time the furnace goes on this season, I'll be out shopping. LOL. I think the best plan for exercise with asthma is always to do what you are able to do. If you can't work out long, work out often. Prednisone is the wonderful drug I can't live without but that I hate. I hate what it does to my appetite and my body shape but you gotta love what it does for your breathing.
I hope you feel better with that cold.

I had a major asthma attack this week and had to call (well a friend called while I couldn't breathe) my doctor for pregisone (sp?). It's been a rough week for me for breathing and for a long list of life things---the stresses are probably setting off the physical troubles I'm guessing....

It's getting cold outside and we have turned on our gas heat. I have been having a hard time breathing well enough to do long sessions of cardio. I have been trying to get in little spurts, but have been using my nebulizer after...ick...I hate cold weather.

I can tell fall is right around the corner, yesterday I noticed that horrid rattle in my chest. I'm still going to try to work out today but I may skip the cardio and just do some strength training. Need to call my dr and get a new script for my advair.

I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum: two days ago was the most difficult breathing 'session' / asthma attack I've ever had.

There was a break in the humidity today, and that helped.

Today was the first day I can ever remember having to use my relief during an exercise and at that is was the strength training part. It rained this morning and is now muggy and humid so that might be why but I was still inside with the a/c so not for sure.

AlJarvis - that's no fun. I hope you are feeling better soon. There are so many factors that we don't know, though - When was the last time you talked to the dr? Are you still on all the meds? How bad is the cough?

I would stay on top of it though - a friend of mine had walking pnuemonia for quite a while, but he recovered with antibiotics - but then it took a couple of months after that for him to heal completely.

I have a pretty chronic cough right now that has lasted for about 2 months now. I cough all the time, not just when exercising. It's driving me crazy! I went to the doctor and she gave me an inhaler, allergy medicine, nose spray, and cough syrup so I can sleep at night. It was getting better for awhile, but now it seems like it's coming back. Does anyone else have a cough like this... and could it be asthma related?

Somewhat. I still have the bloated feeling and am very tired. I am finishing up with the eye doc first and still if I am feeling bad I will hit the medical doctor. It gets very costly. I had to order new contacts and with my insurance I still pay 48 dollars. Man everything has went up in price so bad. Last year I only paid 30 dollars.

I am suffering from bloatedness and headaches pretty bad right now for some reason. My asthma is not acting up at all. I am very tired and retaining fluid for some reason also. I am getting my eyes finally better after finding out my contacts were fitting to tight and had cut off the oxygen to the eye. I am getting that straightened out first then will work on the rest. Take care team and have a great week.

Yes very well. Today it was so bad with sinuses from the allergies that I have had a headache all day almost turning to a migraine. The humidity is very hard on me here in Arkansas.

They're done with my house! PTL I am slowly cleaning up the mess and have vacuumed and dusted every room. Now to clean the closets out so I can begin to put things away. Everyone was right. I hated the 10 day process but I'm tickled with the result. Have a good weekend everyone.

I wouldn't go that far Sue but I hope to be lighter. Still doing fairly well but had to use relief on Sunday but making it now. Maybe they will get your ceilings put in quickly for you. Good luck.

Having the popcorn ceilings removed here at home and thus the house is wide open to the elements. Not the best for my asthma but I'm managing but staying on pred for a few days longer just in case. Makes me tired and cranky and HUNGRY but it does work, thank God. Back on track with my eating and healthy lifestyle choices so expect good things when I weigh in tomorrow. Glad to hear you are doing well again Cherly. Keep up the good work and you'll be posing for pictures by the pool by August!

Cherly,
Rather than deal with the stress of fighting by eating, I give you some suggestions to reduce the fighting.
When my kids used to fight with one another, I'd go out of my way to make it difficult for them to continue. If they fought over a toy, I'd tell them that the problem must be that the toy doesn't play well and needed to be removed from sight to the top of the refrigerator. Before long they learned to stop fighting or at least keep it down. I remember hearing them say "if you don't stop she'll take it away from us."
If they were mean with one another, we'd all take a time out together. For every nasty thing said about someone they had to say 3 nice things about them. Again they didn't like how much time that took so they learned not to fight as often or as loudly.
Just some ideas for you.

Dawn, many people have allergies and asthma. It's worth a conversation with your doctor. Sometimes they suggest you just use your rescue inhaler prior to exercising to avoid symptoms than can lead to wheezing. My daughter has exercise induced asthma and cold weather exposure induced asthma. She just can't exercise when it's cold outside but can in warmer weather if she uses her inhaler. I have problems in May and October and just avoid much outdoor activity during those months to reduce my medication needs. We all have to find what works best for us on this one because it is so individual. Good luck on your plan. Let us know how it goes.

I hope to try the Pilates. I have heard it is very good to do also. I hope to get me a new treadmill sometime where I can watch TV and walk at the same time with my asthma. Sounds like you've got a plan Dawn. I don't have many in my family who will help me so it's just me and my kids.

Thanks Cherly for the reply. I have Leslie's Sansone DVD's and have done them in the past. I might go back to doing them. I sometimes get bored that's why I like walking outside so much.
I'm not sure if my asthma is allergy related or not. I use to think so, still do but it seems to hang on all year. But I also know that it's gotten worse in the last few years, especially since I added 30 pounds which didn't help.
It seems like a never ending circle but I'm going to start exercising with my niece which will help alot. She is also on SP and has 6 or 7 different machines in her basement. I thought I would do that along with the walking. I just know that I feel better when I move.
Thanks again for the reply, have a good weekend.

Hello Dawn and glad to have you. I have asthma that is induced by my allergies. As for me right now it is also very tough for me to be outside due to being allergic to most tree pollen and grass pollen which is high around where I live in Arkansas. If I walk outside I do it mostly around 7:00 p.m. and night and it doesn't bother me as bad. Mostly I do the Walk Away the Pounds tapes by Leslie Sansone inside and it's a great workout to do. You might try them. I know alot of people on SP use them also. If you think yours is allergy related you might check into allergy shots like I take which do help me out. Hope you get to doing better and always here if you need me.

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting but I have a question about my asthma.
This time of year is my favorite. I love when the flowers are blooming, the grass is green...it's also the time of year where my asthma is the worse.
Last spring and summer I was stuck inside all of the time and I love being outside. I don't want that to happen this year.
My question is if I start walking outside will my body eventually adapt. I've taken walks and I love it but I start coughing when I first start, in the middle and sometimes at the end.
My walking is one of my favorite and main exercises especially outside. I just don't want to be stuck inside, it was very depressing.
Thanks for all the advice.
Dawn

Cherly, if you think it is an allergic reaction, ask your doctor for some allergy eye drops. The work fantastic and give immediate and long lasting relief from symptoms. The one I got is prescription and works so much better than the over the counter kinds I have tried. I have eye allergic reactions very rarely and have some on hand and it stops the itch and runny eyes that leads excess moisture in my nose which gives me post-nasal drip and triggers my asthma. It's really worth it. Good luck.

Sue I really wonder if mine is not allergy pink eye. It comes around everytime my sinuses go to acting up. My eyelid is swelled up and it really hurts when I go outside. It is very sensitive so I am taking benadryl every 4 hours to help with drying up the sinus congestion.

Cherly, Pink eye is either caused by a bacteria or a virus. To prevent a repeat bouts, try throwing out any eye make-up you use, wash all your towels and pillowcases and frequently wash your hands. There are some eye drops for allergic eye symptoms that may make it more comfortable. Good luck. You live among little people and they bring all of this home and every surface they touch can be a source of reinfection for you. This to shall pass....
