I came across this quote this morning by Daniel Boorstin
"The greatest obstacle to discovering the shape of the earth, the continents and the oceans was not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge"
The more I read this, the more I realized the depth of this quote and how it can apply to so many things in our lives. How many times have you veered off course by the illusion of knowledge? Of course, we're not searching for the earth or continents or oceans, but we're all on a journey in search of something ~ weight loss, health, better habits, quitting smoking and so on. How many times have you gone astray because someone looked like or sounded like they knew what they were talking about or seemed knowledgable and credible?
I have done this to myself countless times. I've been led astray by others. I've even led myself astray. I've wanted to believe something so badly, so strongly that I eventually talked myself into that belief and then somewhere down the road, I had this amazing moment of clarity and realized it was all just an illusion. So of course I got back on track AFTER beating myself up. But that's not necessary. We all make mistakes, we're going to, we're not perfect and perfection is not something we are or we want.
I guess my posting this quote was to share what I thought was a great quote, but to also encourage everyone to be present and consciously engaged in this journey. If you hear something that sounds too good to be true, or something that makes you go "hmmm.... I've never heard that before" do some research and double check it. If the person that gave you that info is offended you're going to double check what they're telling you, then you've met the magician. If they encourage you to double check and are not offended, then chances are they are legitimate, but again, illusionists have mastered the art of deception.
Another phrase keeps going through my mind... the old "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with bull****".
Be strong. You can do it! Be on the lookout for the illusionist and don't be afraid to approach it head-on and challenge it, even if it's you! You'll be better for it!
If it's amazing, it won't be easy. If it's easy it won't be amazing. If it's worth it you won't give up. If you give up you're not worth it.
