Please update it on your talley sheet by using the edit key and not on a separate thread. You can't keep track that way

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much

I'm in. Sounds like a wonderful idea.
For those who do not want to sign up on the spreadsheet on the website, but would like to see if they can destash, I am setting up the points system here for participation. I am going to do it for the entire year so you can copy and paste to your box and then update your box each month or time you finish a project. Also adding a separate block for those who purchased yarn to figure the purchase out and hopefully during the year, the new yarn will be used up

This was my New Year's resolution. I've only purchased 2 skeins of yarn while on trips. But while using stash to make a shawl, I had to buy more to complete it. I'm still knitting it, so don't know if I'm over or not...I'm also going to try to destash my fabric with quilt making!

I'm still in positive points, but May is going to sink me. i'm going to maryland Sheep and wool and hope to kit up a sweater or 2. I'm the type of stasher who never buys enough to make an actual garment!

If you acquire more yarn yes you do as it is adding to your stash

I purchased so much yarn last month I will be negative for a long time. That is why I am now knitting very quickly to get rid of it.

Do I have to subtract points if I don't buy any yarn and people just give it to me? If so, I am in some serious negative territory!

Gosh! This should be the challenge for mr, but it looks very scary! My last two garments were knitted from my stash. The one in the pic was 20+ year old wool originally bought to knit my son a cricket sweater when he was at school. He's now 32!

A-ha! So you're the culprit!

Just kidding - but I am having a terrible time not buying yarn....lots of sales this time of year to make way for Spring yarns, and I feel as though the stores do it ON PURPOSE because they know we've all vowed not to buy more.....

ZB it looks like she copied my tally sheet with the two purchases for Jan instead of the totallly blank one and then removed my worked numbers, inserting her own, but did not remove my purchases.

Ellen - almost, but I think you are supposed to subtract points for purchased balls of yarns - does that say you bought 10 balls?

Excellent! Thanks SO much for the clarification. I love this....I finished a 3 skein project in January, but might have put myself into the negative with a new yarn purchase on the 31st. :) I'm really close to finishing some projects though...this could be fun!

you know its good if you use more of your existing stash and finishing projects, what than doing that and also adding more yarn to your stash

You do not go through your entire stash and add up points. for me and a lot of others that would be I have close to a million points. That itself would take away from serious knitting time.

You start off your points as your pull out out your stash and using it up.

example. you start out with your existing stash of 20 balls of 5 oz which is 50 x 20 or 1000 points
you use them all which gives you 1000 stash points plus 50 points for finishing a project

total 1050 point
but then you go out and purchase 10 balls of yarn at 25 points each or 250 points

you substract the 250 from the 1050 which leaves 800 positive points

Same month you finish another project using up 2 14 oz balls from your stash which is 2000 stash points plus the 50 finished object points

So you have the 800 points plus the 2050 points for a total of 2850 that month

which could look at this
Using the point system
Yarn Ball Size Points
2 oz 25
5 oz 50 1000 points
8-12 oz 100
14 oz (and up) 1000 laphan 2 balls 2000
Finish a project? 50 laphan and sweater 100 points
Bought a ball of yarn? subtract appropriate amount of points
2 oz 25 10 x 25 250 points
5 oz 50
8-12 oz 100
14 oz (and up) 1000

Everybody tells me that they would love to knit, but they don't have time. I look at people's lives and I can see opportunity and time for knitting all over the place. The time spent riding the bus each day? That's a pair of socks over a month. Waiting in line? Mittens. Watching TV? Buckets of wasted time that could be an exquisite lace shawl. ~Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, At Knit's End: Meditations for Women Who Knit Too Much

But if you total up all points, how do you know what's good and what's bad? I simply need someone to explain the system to me - I know how to edit a post. Does one have to add up all ounces of yarn in their stash - and then give themselves points for that? I understand you get 50 points for finishing and abject -but that is all I get so far.
Can anyone explain i?

If you get rid of yarn and finish a project points are good but if you add stash to your existing stash, points are bad

After the way the link is set up that is why I did this block below so you could keep your numbers here and edit simply by hitting the edit key on your thread. THEn, you can take your final numbers for that month back to the website and post them there.

Okay people...you're going to have to help me because I'm feeling a bit slow today. I do not get it. Are points good or bad? How do you get a point for a ball of yarn - do you add up everything IN your stash (I do have a food scale....) or just what you use up? I love the idea of points for de-stashing, but for some reason I'm sketchy on the instructions. I followed the original link, but still feeling dim....

Did you count any January projects before the 16th? I saw the challenge officially started on the 16th, but I didn't know if it counted the whole month or just from the 16th on. :)

“Do not let your fire go out spark by irreplaceable spark... Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real…. It is possible…. It’s yours. “

That challenge uses your skeins gone and projects completed but also adds back points for yarn purchased
