My Chloe gets dog food, chicken, and peanut butter. Not together, but even so, she probably wouldn't mind. :)

We use Diamond- lamb and rice. Whenever she doesnt have this... Juno thinks it is a treat and scarfs it down.

It varies. the "Base" food is Purina One Beyond Lamb and Rice, because it has everything the vet said he needed( omega-3s, omega-6s, glucosamine) in it. If i have a coupon, i'll buy another brand and mix it in. Also, apples, and carrots. Lately, with the overload from my aunt's tree, it's been peaches. He hates green beans, which is what my vet recommended. he'll only eat them cooked with bacon, or fried in ghee, neither of which my vet allows lol. Something else filling to keep his weight down.

In the light of darkness I'll find my way
I've shed my sorrow, at least for today
I have never felt so strong
Life is rushing through my veins
With my heart and mind aligned
I can stand the test of time
I have never felt so proud
Of what I feel and who I am
When life brings me to my knees
Nothing will ever get me down

With 10 dogs, we have a variety of eating habits. 8 of the dogs get a morning bowl of pap that I make up every night. They all sit and wait patiently for their bowls to be set down in a certain place. The other two do not care for it. Then we feed Epol mixed pellets in a 20 liter wash basin. They all have different times they like to eat, so I keep it filled and they eat as they please through out the day. I used to try to keep it in several smaller bowls but that did not work out to well. Some of the dogs got to possessive over a certain bowl. The large basin works very well as no one dog can get that way and they are all getting along very well.

Kestrel is on a weight mnt food from the vet. She was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism so we are trying to get her weight back in line.

Bellie and Lili eat EVO Herring & Salmon. Bellie has to have 3 or 4 pieces of Kestrel's diet food on top like cherries or she refuses to eat her meals, hehe, yes.. she is spoiled.

I feed Cali Evo kibble with meats and vegetables we prepare. The vegetables are raw, like carrots. The meats are beef, chicken, chicken livers, etc. She hardly ever gets table scraps because we use lots of garlic and onions that are both bad for dogs.

The beef is usually a pot roast that is chunked up and frozen in 4 oz. packaged. We defrost so it is just barelyn cooked. The chicken are thighs that are roasted in the oven and when cool, we twist out the bone and freeze in serving sized packages. And so on.

All her treats are no grain, real meat, etc.

Cali is a finicky eater as well, but we do the same as NPR. If she doesn't eat a meat, it gets covered and put in the frig for the next feeding. When I am the giver of food, I have her sit and look me in the eyes before offering the food and telling her it is for her....usually works, but when she isn't hungry, she just isn't hungry.

BTW, I have noticed that if we offer her food when another dog is near, she gobbles it down like there is not tomorrow! LOL

I feed stormylu and shadow blue buffalo lamb and rice and they love it. Now that's not to say they are overly excited to eat it (I was feeding them way too much and got "the lecture" about overweight dogs from my vet). Now that I feed them a set amount at a set time they go nuts over it. I give them about 30 minutes to eat then put the bowls up till the next day. The schedule seemed to be the key to getting them to eat ALL their food.

I did notice that they have less poo on the blue buffalo and their coats look amazing! I also mix in a can of sardines (packed in water) about 1 -2 times per week to help with their coats. It stinks but the dogs love them (yuck!).

Bella is finicky not in what she eats but in when and how. She won't eat if other dogs are around - its all too exciting! She won't eat if I'm moving around the house - its all too exciting! She won't eat if she's in a strange place - too EXCITING! LOL.

I give her certain considerations now, but don't worry about it like I did when she was a puppy and really had trouble gaining weight. Now her food is her food until she eats it. I may take it up so that I can present it at the next meals, but it doesn't get tossed.

One of those considerations is making sure she is given food when my husband and I sit down to eat. We fix our plates, fix her bowl, and go sit down. Sometimes I will hand feed her a couple of pieces to "get her primed." She knows when it is dinner time and she knows that she's going to sit down and eat with us.

When she was a sick little pound puppy, I would sometimes mix green beans with her food to encourage her to eat. I still sometimes do that if I'm feeling generous but its not often enough that she's expect it.

Are the four dogs on a schedule now? My parents' dogs always have food out in the kitchen, and that works for them, but unless I keep my pup on a fairly regularly schedule, she'll run by the food bowl without even a sniff.

And I know that you hear a lot about not feeding dogs people food, but its true. My parents dogs will beg and steal off of your plate because they recognize all food as their food. Its hard to believe but dogs will stop begging for people food if they never (and I mean NEVER) get it.

Mine only begs when we stop by to see a friend of mine who always slips her bits of chicken. She knows that any other time, it will be fruitless.

Also, thanks everyone for the ideas on adding a little oil to the food.

I feed Toby the Blue Buffalo dog food and he does great on it. He is 10 years old and was starting to suffer some from arthritis. I started feeding him Blue Buffalo food, dry with some canned stirred in it each morning, and the change has been dramatic. He no longer needs his bayer aspirin everyday and his coat is glossy and thick. He runs and spins and acts like a puppy. He seems to like the food pretty well, although some canned food stirred in makes him even happier.

Flaxseed oil is also good -- it prevents swelling and is a good oil for the pet's heart. Sometimes the dry food is too dry, but dogs don't like mushy or damp food too much -- the oil adds just enough flavor to tempt them to eat it. Skin problems can be slight itching all the way to rashes, loss of hair, open sores, and redness around the eyes. Dogs are sensitive to weather changes and levels of pollen in the air and even changes in their bedding materials. There are dog-allergists, but they are rather expensive! It takes some detective work to discover what is causing your dog to scratch/itch.

Purina foods are very good and we usually buy that brand for the cats and the dogs. During allergy season (spring/fall), we have to try the more expensive kinds -- otherwise we end up spending a fortune on skin care products. PetSmart carries a wide variety of brands and they are a good resource for any particular type of problem your pet may have with foods.

When we got Belle from the rescue she was on Nurto Ultra Puppy, so we did that for a while but she hadely ate. and for a puppy that was surprising. We have always fed out cats Purina so we slowly mixes Purina puppy in hers and she eats more now and seems to like it and shes going great!
My sister uses natural. Her puppy always has gas, not sure if its the food or not, but the price was enough to stop me!
As for people food, tiny bits here and there but we are careful as to what to give her.

For those of you who prefer "natural foods" for your pets, the February issue of The Whole Dog Journal lists the 2010 approved dry foods. The natural foods segment of the pet manufacturing market has grown almost 25% in the last seven years, with the "organic" segment up 48%. As an owner of dogs that have had various skin ailments, we opt to pay a higher price for foods that don't have so many "fillers and chemicals". First and foremost, (just as you would with foods you eat) look at the ingredients panel of any food you are considering to purchase for your pet. Buy a small supply to try it out -- not only should your pooch or cat like it, he/she shouldn't develop digestive, skin, or other health problems. Nutrition experts agree that all animals enjoy the best health when given a balanced and varying diet of fresh, species-appropriate foods. Animal protein should be at the top of the ingredients list. There should be a named animal protein source (i.e., chicken, lamb, beef -- not "chicken, etc. meal"). Pets also need whole vegetables, fruits, and grains. The food should be stored and processed properly -- kept clean/dry/cold. Watch out for added sweeteners -- as with human food, these are added to entice a pet to eat them, but are often there due to a lack of healthy ingredients. Check for artificial preservatives and artificial coloring -- the pets don't need these and many are harmful. Here is a listing of approved dry foods by the journal -- Artemis Pet Foods, Back to Basics, and Bench and Field Pet Foods. The article emphasizes that any food that you find is just as good as the companies on the list if you do your reading and careful selection. Per the many dangerous situations in the last few years, the pet food industry has become a convenient place for the human food industry to dispose of its waste products and even a dumping ground for totally inedible ingredients. Many of the best companies aren't the pet food giants -- they are companies that buy their ingredients from local farms, ranches, and fishermen. They also track their product from the company to the stores and insist on proper packaging and storing. Consumers are responding to the positive changes in their pets on improved diets -- ask your veterinarians about their choices of foods and products (some even sell them in their offices). You can also check the company's website or call the toll free phone numbers if you doubt the advertising or want to ask questions about the various varieties the company may have in its line.

If it was just one dog holding out on food, I might think he was a picky eater. With 4 of them not eating a variety of brands, that does tell me they're just waiting you out for the good stuff.

If I were in your position, I would first try what NPR said. The more you fixate on them not eating, the more they'll sense your anxiety about food. Maybe mix the kibble with wet food and gradually reduce the amount you add. I tried the all natural kibble like Blue Buffalo before and Wilson didn't like it any better or worse. It did make him intolerably gassy, though!

Best of luck! Let us know if you find something that works.

Do you give them food scraps? They may be waiting for something better. If nothing better comes, maybe they will eat the dog food.

I know that sometimes dogs don't eat because they are NOT hungry, they do a kind of fast. However, when they skip 2-3 days of eating and it is very obvious that they are hungry because they are scrounging around looking for food scraps, I can't not be concerned. They are my first priority, they are like my kids (because I don't have any), so I worry. I have tried recommendations that I have gotten from veterinarians, but still sometimes don't have success. I am wits end. Thanks for your thoughts though!

I use the Costco/Kirkland brand of dog food. I am of the mind that if they don't eat, they don't eat. Pick up the food and give it to them at the next meal time. If they don't eat again, pick it up and give it to them the next meal time. When they are hungry, they will eat. Sorry, I guess I am heartless.

I have 4 dogs who are extremely picky eaters. Many times, I will set their food out in front of them, and they turn up their noses and walk away. We seem to waste so much food in our house because they just won't eat it.

I have been doing alot of research on the brand Blue Buffalo lately. Does anyone use this brand, and what results have you had? If anyone has other suggestions, they would also be appreciated.
