This is my third day and still learning to navigate the site. I am excited that I found the emoticons but have no clue how to add them to my post; help would be appreciated. I've been trying to loose 40 pounds for 3 years- my problem has been motivation to stick with it, and since I've never posted to a message board before I'm hoping this will help get me moving.
I posted to this message because I don't know how to just throw a message out there without first hitting reply.

Gd mrn fam...I've been faithfully working out and eating healthy for 3 weeks now I've lost 10 lbs but now I've stopped losing!!! Still working out and eating right but not seeing any lose on the scale and it is frustrating but I refuse to give up!!! So can anyone give me some advise on what to do to start my metabolisim to burn so I can start seeing some results PLEASE!!!!

After you enter your stats your nutritional tracker will give you suggested ranges and when you enter your fitness exercises the nutritional tracker will automatically update your nutritional tracker appropriately.

1500 - 1800 seems very high for weight loss. The range is usually 1200 - 1500 calories for most people.

Hi

\I have a question i been wondering for a long time

i lost 67 a c ouple yrs ago and i just gain 30 lbs , not nice

\her is my question, i have such a hard time to losne now

\\\\i am suppose to eat between 1500 and 1850 a day how do i know what is the calories i am suppose to eat

also i want to know if i do exercise and i burn say 350 calories 5 x wks
to i have to up my calories that much more (350 ) if i only eat what they give me to start or do i still eat between 1500 and 1800 calories,

what i really want to know is if i burn 350 calories and i do eat 1500 calories that day i am down to 1150 if i deduct does that mean i only eat 1150 and i am in starving mode

i wonder if that is why i have such a hard time to lose now

Hi. This is my very first post on SP. I joined in October 2011, but just started using it in earnest last Thursday (Apr 19, 2012). My question is: how many SparkTeams should I join? How do people who follow SparkTeams fit that into their lives? How much time do you spend (waste?) in front of the computer on SparkPeople?

I get the idea of a supportive community helping me stay on track; and I love the idea that helping others actually helps yourself in the long run! So I'm tempted to follow and contribute to many SparkTeams - age groups, activity groups, emotional support groups, etc., in addition to using the Nutrition and Fitness Trackers daily and reading the informative articles on various nutrition and fitness topics. I even checked out "The Spark" in eBook form from my local public library (more computer time there!)

At least it keeps me from eating and adds willpower to combat cravings, but doesn't help my fitness goals to add even more time in front of the computer to my already computer-filled existence. So any advice on how many Teams and how you fit SP into your daily life would be welcomed.

When I go to my weight tracker, my "goal" yellow line is set as my starting weight, and even after an entered loss, there is not red tracking line, or movement in any line at all. How do I see progress on my chart?? I have checked to make sure my actual goal weight is correct, and it is. It's just disappointing to have a loss and not see it represented. Can anyone help me please!?

I'm still having a hard time learning how to set up my site, change things, etc. How does everyone get the pretty backgrounds on their pages? Maybe I just need more time to explore the site...I'm not all that good with computers! I did get one picture to post (not one I would have liked to put on my page) & still am not sure how I got it there. Think maybe it was when I used Internet Explorer instead of Firefox...not sure. Well, at least I'm trying....I really love SP! Lots of support on here. I'm now going to check out the "Help and Advice" that I see above. Thanks everyone!!emoticon

1. Go to the SparkPages tab.
2. Click Create a New SparkPage (or View Your SparkPage, then Edit SparkPage if you already have one).
3. Complete the information for the title and description of your SparkPage. Your SparkPage can also be used as a personal homepage to share information about yourself with other members. If you don't want to have your SparkPage available to others, you can check the box to keep your page private (offline).
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the weight loss ticker.
5. Check the box that says "Yes, show my weight loss ticker."
6. Put in your starting weight and goal weight. Please note that your current weight on your ticker will update automatically when you weigh in, but we will not update your ticker starting and goal weight if you change your goals on your program; you'll need to update starting and goal weight on your SparkPage.
7. Select your ticker icon.
8. Select your ticker background.
9. Click "Save Changes" at the bottom or top of the page.

To edit your ticker, scroll down the page to your ticker, make any necessary changes, and click Save Changes at the top or bottom of the page.


To add your profile picture, go to the box at the bottom right of your page labeled “Profile Image.”
Click “change this image”. You can select a picture from your gallery or click “browse” at the bottom of the page to find another picture on your computer to upload.
Click "Save Changes" at the bottom or top of the page.

To enter text for your signature, enter it in the "Personal Signature" box on the right side of the page.

I apologize for taking so long to notice your question.
I think you will be able to make the change you want by going to 'Start' tab and click on the small url under that word that says "Account/Email Preferences" and click on 'Account' tab. Scroll down to 'Reset Your Goals' and follow those prompts.

My weight tracking ticker shows my POUNDS entered, but says KGS... do you know how to change it? I don't weigh 247kgs, I weigh 247 pounds? Thanks! Liz

OK.. I'm back .. still having this issue but on the message board posts the ticker is showing POUNDS, but it's showing double saying that I'm over 500 lbs. Think I'll just turn it off for now.. I had it there for me, but it's just annoying me...

It's not as "in your face" as facebook is. It's more like just "bookmarking" people for future reference. I find more connection through the teams I am part of than through my friends list, honestly. :)

Basically, you visit their SparkPage, and on the page there is a button (in the upper right, I think) to add them as a SparkFriend. There is no "accepting" or "ignoring" people, like on Facebook. It's automatic. They friend you, then you show up as a friend on their SparkPage. End of Story. If you DO want to add them back, it's the same process... visit their SparkPage, and add them from there. They'll show up on your list.

How do you get your goal or whatever under you posting? When I post anything it is blank except for what i wrote. Do you now what I am talking about? Example under suebees there is the line and then her favorite quote and her goal.

And as we speak I've read a few more of the posts. I do not have to log on every time I use SP, much to my surprise emoticon happy surprise. I log on once in the morning and even if I log off and shut down the machine, I get back on later in the day and SP comes up along with my general "aol welcome screen". It's wonderful! And I had nothing to do with it. I hope you all out there can get the same thing going on.

Oh you mean the virtual model? You need to download the picture from the MVM site (right click on it), and then put it in your photo gallery on your spark page. :)

At the drop down menu under "MY TOOLS" you can click on "other goals" and add or remove goals....I am uncertain about what you mean by quick tracking these. Hope that helps.

I am relatively new to Spark people too..and I am wondering if I have done something wrong that I have to log in to my account so often in one day? I will log in and then if I get a email from Spark people I will go to it and have to log in again. I have checked the "remember me" button several times and this does not help the problem. Any suggestions?

The hardest part of any journey is the first step..and we did that when we joined Spark People...we are on our way!

Do you mean the ticker at the bottom, or the little imaginary people?

The ticker can be set by creating a SparkPage. The settings are further down the page. :)

The little people are created on a different site - mvm.com (mvm = my virtual model). You can save them, put them in your Spark gallery, and then set them as your avatar.

Hello!

No. If you read the 101 article explains it fully. The gist of it is that it takes into account the amount of cals you need to perform basic functions, the amount you would burn on average from exercise (based on what you say in the goal set-up) and the amount of weight you say you would like to lose per week. It ensures the burned vs consumed ratio is at a safe level and then gives your suggested intake. You should ideally vary what you take, too. It's tempting to stick at the low end of your range all the time, but by varying the amount of calories you take in, you can trick the body into burning more cals.

You will still lose weight. One of the things I have learned here is that the mathematics of weight loss aren't as straight forward as you think! It isn't a simple case of "eat less, lose more" as there are so many other factors to take into account!

Eating too little will have your body store what it has as fat rather than muscle. The fat stores are considered essential, so when it comes to burning off it's the muscle that goes first. As you get into a workout routine, you may find that you will need to increase your intake further. It's pretty much a trial and error thing, though, as everyone is so different. That's what works about sparkpeople... that we aren't all herded into a pen and told that we must eat x and do y, we are simply given the tools and information we need and left to find our own way to make it work.

Thanks for the info. My doctor did a full blood work-up before I went on the diet. Everything was fine. I asked her if 1100 cals were good for me to loose 32lb she said yes. There is no other reason I am on 1100 cals. Maybe I should just follow SP goals. It would make things easier for me. But if I do will I still loose weight? I have lost 1 lb so far and it's only been a week. :)

The SparkPeople program will NOT allow any female to eat less than 1,200 calories daily or any male to eat less than 1,500 calories daily.

When calories drop too low (usually below 1,200 calories for women and 1,500 calories for men), your body’s protection mechanism switches on because the body thinks it is starving. In order to conserve energy, the body lowers your metabolism and you will not burn calories as quickly. This results in a slower weight loss rate, or sometimes prohibits any weight loss from occurring.

At SparkPeople we call this “Starvation Mode”. When your caloric intake falls below these levels, it is also extremely difficult to obtain all the nutrients that your body needs for health and survival. These very low calorie intakes can also lead to other health problems such as eating disorders, gout, gallstones, and heart complications.

I would not suggest going against your dr's advice, though... he will be well aware of these factors and will be checking for them. I am sure there is a good reason he will have told you to have the number of cals he has.

There is a full explaination somewhere on the site, I'll dig it out and post it in a moment.

The long and short of it is that no-one should be below 1,250 cals (unless, of course, they are under medical advice as you are) You aren't going to be able to over-ride that unfortunately, as it's written into the programme as a safety net against people using the site to promote destructive eating habits.

To answer your earlier question about not reaching your target... how far short are you?

If it's only 100 or so and just once in a while, then don't worry too much. If it's a regular occurance though or you find you are immensely short, maybe take a look at the article "Calorie Boosting Tips" www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_art

That article was a great help to me in my first weeks here... I was regularly at around 500/600 cals so needed all the help I could get!!

My calorie goal is 1100-1200 a day. When I enter food it says I should have 1200-1500 cals a day. I have to keep changing it...WHY? I know SP recommend 1200-1500 but advice from my DR said 1100-1200 was a good goal for me. I can't get the goal to stay that way. :(

Sometimes it depends on how the item was originally entered. Many items give you a choice of weight measurements, but not all of them.

Another question please? I tried to enter food today but the data base won't let me change the portion to what I actually ate. What can I do?

Example: I wanted to put in 75g of meatballs.
The data base only let me put in oz. I can't convert that.

Please help!

That's one of the major drawbacks I see to the meal plans... they throw a bunch of random ingredients at you, and expect you to figure out how to make them into something edible. I had to turn them off on day one. :(

I just recorded what I actually ate, and made changes to make things healthier. It really taught me how to still enjoy the foods I love, but prepare them in a way that is much better for me. :D

Hi there.

I don't use the meal plans myself, but I am pretty sure that there aren't recipes as such, it's just assumed that you know how to cook the things listed on the plan.

Actually, there's another way, as well. :)

Go to your Start page (click on "My Tools" above). I actually keep this page as my SparkPeople bookmark for even easier access. :D

In the green column on your Start page (Community), the top section has two links -- one to view your SparkPage, and one to Create a Blog Entry. The latter will take you to your blog, and you can add an entry from that page (click on the "Add a Blog Entry" button in the upper right).
