Hippiegurl, It is intereseting that you bring that up. One of the Reumatologist I used to have told me that when you take Calcium to take D3 also to absorb the Calcium. But it goes beyond that. Zinc and magnesium work with calcium to form and maintain bones and vitamin K plays a role in bone formation and bone health, and is required for the proper use of calcium in bones

Sometimes it's the small things like that, that make the big differences. You can be taking big doses of Vitamin D, but if you're not taking it properly(with a meal that includes fats and calcium) your body won't absorb it and it's just money down the drain.

Good thing to remember, Hippiegurl! I am glad you posted as i had forgotten about that. I have been on it for so long it is just habit to take with dinner.

An important thing to remember is that when you are supplementing with Vitamin D, your body absorbs it better if you take it with a big meal that includes fats and calcium!

Wow, lots of info here. I had no idea that lack of D3 could affect us so much. I do try to walk in the morning to get vitamin D (from the sun) and supplement with about 4000 units. I'll have to check into this more. B-12 is a key one tho. Good luck figuring all of this out!

I really had no idea that vitamin D was even associated with fibromyalgia symptoms...

I have what my doctor called a "profound deficiency"... I have been on 50,000 iu twice a week for a couple of years, and my D levels were actually dropping. I started on D3, with 4000 iu daily, and it made very little difference--but I should maybe clarify my situation a bit. That doctor who prescribes this stuff for me? A nephrologist, or kidney specialist.

I have chronic kidney disease, and the kidneys are actually involved in a process that makes vitamin D bioavailable by turning it into a certain hormone, which is what our bodies need vitamin D for... And since my kidneys don't work right... well, there it is.

I am now taking 2000 iu vitamin D3 daily, PLUS the hormone calcitriol, (the processed form of vitamin D, only available by prescription) three times a week. Hasn't really changed the pain level that I can tell, but I do have a bit more energy... I'm waiting for August, when I get to have more labwork to find out how well it's working....

Of course, I have a similar problem with a vitamin B12... A whole different subject... LOL

If you are able to get outside everyday, it's a great way for adding to what you're doing. Ten minutes of exposure to early morning sun (the safest time of day to get it) can give most people all the vitamin D they need. It's called the sunshine vitamin for very good reason--the way they add vitamin D to foods? They irradiate it with LIGHT! LOL Look it up, you'll see...

I was diagnosed with low vitamin D and was put on D3 many months a go. My levels are in the normal range now, but I'm still taking it daily and I don't feel any different pain-wise.

Wow, that's helpful to know about the 5,000. I was a bit concerned on the 150,000 units per week. I haven't had the D levels checked for a out two years now because it's so expensive and my insurance has changed. Thanks!

I take D3 as well. My blood levels are within the low normal range but an ER DR. that I worked with has training in Holistic training and said anyone with Fibro, needs to be on at least 5,000U a day of the D3. She has done some studies on the syndrome and it is felt that D3 can help alleviate some of the pain for us.

My levels were also low. I was on 50,000 units 3x a week for about a year. My levels were still not up enough. I stopped on my own and now take 2,000 d3 units each day. I also started Savella about six months ago.. The high dose was too much for me, but the 25 mg seems to be working. My pain levels have decreased considerably, unless I get really stressed and have a flare. Hang in there. . . fibro truly is the pits, though.

If you're on prescription Vit D,it's D2, which is the less desirable form of D. It has a shorter shelf life, and its metabolites bind with protein poorly, making it less effective. Studies have even concluded that vitamin D2 should no longer be regarded as a nutrient appropriate for supplementation, even though it continues to be used. The better form for supplementation is Vit D3, which can be found at any drugstore and most discount stores(walmart. kmart, etc). I live in New York State and have been taking 10,000 IU daily for at least the last 2 or 3 years. My last bloodwork showed I was in the optimal range(finally) at between 60-65.
Here's a good article on the subject:

My count is INCREDIBLY low, the lowest my doctor has ever seen in his 30 years of practice. I started out on an even higher dosage than 50,000/week because my levels were that low. And I'm still taking a ton of vitamin D supplements. It hasn't helped me so far, but I'm still not in a "healthy" range. But hopefully it will help you!

Has anyone else been diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiancy? My level is low and my doctor prescribed 50,000 units/week. I looked up the symptoms and they sound just like fibro. I am hoping the high dose D helps the pain in my spine, hips, and legs. emoticon
