Undoubtedly. My primary care doctor actually told me once upon a time, that if doctors could prescribe exercise and relaxation like they do pills, 90% of their patients would be buying it--AND the doctors would be a lot poorer--and the health insurance companies would probably go out of business! LOL

My life is bascially the same---no wonder I still suffer so badly!
I am still a perfectionist, always trying to do better.
Since I still suffer badly, I am unable to achieve my goals, that makes for a vivious cycle.
Having additional health issues doesn't help.
I wonder if some of the other issues could also be predisposed!
What do you all think?

hi, i'm in absolute agreement with you folks. when i was first (finally) dx with fibro/cfs, it was by an immunologist who was the ONLY dr. i'd been to who felt it was a legitimate illness, this was back in in early 90's, no one took it seriously then.interestingly enough, one of the things he told me was that he felt certain people were pre-disposed by their high achievment, type-A, lives, usually in a state of chronic stress that just seemed normal to them. the more i've improved over the years, and the clearer my hindsight becomes, the more i agree with him. my life is totally different now, and i don't think i'd have improved w/out all the changes.

Im Magic,

"The thing is, I'm grateful in an odd way. I've had to slow down and take things one at a time--and it's been a learning experience. I have a greater appreciation for the little things that make life worth all the hassles..."

That sums it up for me too! It's allowed me to enjoy more of the simple things in life instead of going at break-neck speed all of the time. Life is meant to be enjoyed and savored. I didn't do any of that for the first 28 yrs of my life. Now in my 29th, I'm making it a lifestyle to go with the flow and slow down and enjoy the dance we call Life!

Clean Eating is like a bad religion- full of obsession and accult thinking.

Well I definitely agree with both of those! I was also informed that women that have a history of PTSD, which I do, have an increased risk of Fibro. My Doctors think that I had a Juvenile form and most of the symptoms I've had since early teens, including IC. I went to both High School and College at the same time during my Senior Year and helped to raise my Sibs. I held down 2-3 jobs while trying to attend college, which I eventually had to drop out of. Add that to PTSD and viola!

I was diagnosed back in Jan 2011 and I have yet to tell my mother bc she believes both of those myths. She calls people with Fibro "Hypochondriacs" and that they'd feel better if "...they stopped making excuses and got off of their fat asses".

SO yeah. Thankfully, my DH is very supportive!

I had a doctor tell me that fibro is a waste basket diagnosis, so he would not say I had it, and doubted even after I went to a rheumatologist. With proper testing and process of elimination, fibro is more common than I think he realizes.
My fibro was brought on by trauma to the body through a car accident, unlike the second myth. But I do have to be careful to not let myself get too stressed at work, which can lead to flare-ups.

Thanks, Martha, for this post. I knew the first myth and suspected the second. I've heard of more type-A personality people having fibromyalgia than calm, laid-back people. And the only way I've found to somewhat control my symptoms is to control the stress in my life - as much as I can.

I was on my own by the time I was 18... three part-time jobs, full-time college student with a 4.0 GPA... My Last long term job was 7 yrs in customer service/reception at a $71Mil corporation, where I was nominated for employee of the year... yes, I'm bragging. Why not, I'm proud of that BUT... Fibromyalgia was right around the corner, and when the company was merged with a conglomerate with out of state headquarters, they decided they didn't need my division anymore. With no insurance to deal with multiple medical issues, the fibro became a demon too--and here I am now, almost twelve years later...

The thing is, I'm grateful in an odd way. I've had to slow down and take things one at a time--and it's been a learning experience. I have a greater appreciation for the little things that make life worth all the hassles...

And this team has taught me SO much... Thanks, MARTHAMBRYCE, for confirming that this PHYSICAL ailment has it's roots in something other than our minds!

My problems started years ago. I worked one full-time job, and a part time job. Three teenagers which I took to activities as hubby worked 2 or 3rd shift. I warn my younger daughter. I ask her if she wants to end up like me.

Great post! Both are great facts, but the second one really hits home with me. I've never had a job that I didn't go above and beyond the call of duty. I've always blamed my fibromyalgia on my last job, as a lead housekeeper at a hotel. My motto was "If it's not clean enough for the President, then it's not done." And I always helped everybody on my team. Long days, hard work, and no breaks did a number on me.

What is new to me is the point about driven people. It worked 2 jobs for 2 1/2yrs, sometimes working 20 hrs. in a day. Ended up with high blood pressure and a couple other things to where I had to go to part time at one job or I would end up killing myself. So this fact may be the start of the Fibro.

Slow & steady makes a winner of us. Even if we hit pitfalls, get up. Know that a new day is right around the corner.
Try to be all that you can be. Work at it a day at a time.

From our friends at Real Age:
MYTH: It's All in Your Head
Truth: Fibromyalgia is a real medical condition, which includes specific medical criteria for diagnosis. And researchers are learning more and more about it. In fact, we now know that the nervous systems of people with fibromyalgia process pain signals differently than people who don't have the condition.

MYTH: Only Lazy, Inactive People Get Fibromyalgia
Truth: Researchers actually suspect that many people who develop fibromyalgia are driven people, and that the stress of that drive may play a role in wearing away a person's defenses against fibro symptoms.
