Sorry I have been out of it again for months. Got in a very low state about my weight loss earlier in the year and having got back on track in June, didn't trust myself not to backslide again. Hoping to keep back in touch again at least once a week now. Hope everyone else is doing well and having a good weekend.

I have found that if you love life, life will love you back.

This quote belongs to Arthur Rubinstein (1887 - 1982).

"GIGO," is an acronym in computer language meaning "Garbage in, Garbage Out." You get what you feed into the computer. Short simple and straightforward. The same is true of life. What is there not to love about life? Imagine all the infinite provisions at your disposal for free, fresh air, intelligence, life, opportunities to improve your lifestyle. Anything you desire in life you’ve within reach now. You want to get more living out life; Arthur couldn’t have put it better - "love life."

Have a nice weekend!

Joyce, glad your deck project is complete . . . we're trying to figure out how to re-do our master bathroom to make it more handicap friendly . . . you know, preparing for our future needs.

1/21 Busy day, had church council meeting today but I did get in exercise. I didn't get quite in as many steps as I wanted but maybe when I get done here I can get on the treadmill and get more steps. Almost made 10,000 yesterday, had 9057.

Had a nice day, bible study in the am, then we went to lunch. Our old deck was really in bad shape and Don took it all apart. He wanted to re-do it himself but I talked him out of it because his skin is very thin and the slightest thing he bruises and if he cuts himself we have to end up in the hospital. We then thought we would concrete instead of replacing the deck. Well last week (we have had no deck in the back yard, torn up back yard we have had for about 5 months) we decided to just have the deck re-done. Today the guys came out and it is done. It looks great.I am so happy. Kayla love its, we let her out in the back (it is safe for her now) and she ran around the deck --had a great time.

No, you weren't dreaming when I said this is Festival Sleep day. But, perhaps you should be. Festival of Sleep Day is today. It is an opportunity to sleep in, snooze, doze, nap, and catch 40 winks.

We feel this is the perfect date for Festival of Sleep Day. The holidays are over...Wow, weren't they exhausting! It's cold and snowy.... time to hibernate. And, why not re-charge the batteries as a new year of school and work begins?

Festival of Sleep Day is a favorite holiday to catch up on a little sleep. Whether its all day, a full 8 hours, or just a power nap, enjoy the day sleeping. Cozy up in bed on the couch, or any other comfortable place. Oh.... don't forget your favorite stuffed animal. It's okay to sleep alone, sleep alone or with someone else. We do not recommend groups sleeps.

Caution: Sleeping at work is not recommended, today, or any day. The only exception is for mattress testers.

Warning #2: The Surgeon General has determined that sleeping is good for your health.

So sorry about the loss of your Siamese. We lost our cat to kidney failure a few weeks ago and it isn't easy. It does get easier though and life moves on - banal though that sounds. Glad you got good news about your health.

This is a sad Christmas season for me, since I lost Mickey, my most loved Siamese cat ever, it has been hard to move on.I did put up a small tree & am going through the motions. I am trying not to overeat of the wrong things, as I have finally gotten down to 125 & I don't want to go back up. I did have some good news at my cardiology check up this month, my 2 year carotid scan showed a small improvement, Yea, for the ETL diet! Hope that all here have a joyous & blessed Christmas...

As I look at the calendar and see it is already December 7th, I realize the month is just speeding forward as it usually does. Soon the month will be over and we'll be facing an entire new year. Some people think of it as a new beginning.

But any time of the year can be a new beginning. It is never to early or too late to try to get yourself in a healthier mode. It may be by eating healthier foods or by getting in more exercise, you would know which it is -- or maybe both. Running around shopping for Christmas presents or extra groceries is exercise in itself. Did you know that grocery shopping (or most any kind) counts as using 72 calories every 30 minutes? No wonder a person gets tired out there doing all that extra shopping. Just don't ruin it by stopping by and indulging in a fattening lunch or drink.

Wishing you all the best month ever. Let's all try to post to our teams at least once a week so we all stay in an "active" mode as far as membership is concerned. All it really takes is just one post to the team each month, but alas very few of us are doing even that.

Here's an early "Merry Christmas" to all of you! emoticon

Just chop into slices - about 1/2 inch thick - and then cook with a little water to prevent it sticking to the pan for jam. For apple pie, I just slice thinly before putting the pie crust on. The proportions for jam are usually 50% fruit, 50% sugar, but I usually reduce the sugar a bit. I use apples with virtually all other fruit i.e. blackcurrants, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries etc, and we also have a recipe for apple ginger jam, which we're going to give a whirl.

Do you just dice up the apples? Slice them? Or what. How does it work when you are doing blackberry/apple jam? When I make blackberry jam I use my vitamix (a high-end blender) and bring them down to like juice, but I leave the seeds in, I don't really mind them. And then I just follow the instructions on Sure Jell or one of the thickeners used to make jams & jellies. I don't know if it would be the same brand where you are.

With all the apples we get when our trees are bearing, which by next year they will be, I make a lot of applesauce, and in many of my recipes I substitute half applesauce for the butter or shortening it calls for. I also found that when I make my protein smoothie I like putting in 1/2 cup or more of applesauce, especially if I am using vanilla or almost anything except the chocolate protein powder. I don't care for plain, I only like the flavored.

Hmmm! Never thought of combining apples and blackberries. I'll have to try it next year. We just planted several bushes of 'thornless' blackberries. I know we will have too many, but my DH wanted the plants to block the view in one area as the neighbor put up an ugly shed. Now what am I supposed to do with all those blackberries?

Arghhh! The weather is driving me crazy, it's too cold to go out walking and it's hard to keep walking consistently inside the house. So my weight is at a standstill, and it had already gone up a bit from the stress a few days ago.

However, I am told something will happen in a couple of weeks that will bring a smile to my face! Something to look forward to.

I know we can't have ALL our days be good ones, but gee whiz, when is my turn coming?

You could actually join now, Rosa. It is very easy challenges, so easy to achieve. And by doing what you are already doing you could answer "yes" to the challenge each day. So go ahead and join now -- gives you more spark points.

I have been stressed the last couple of days and eating lots of the wrong things. I just can't seem to stop myself. Hopefully this week will be better.

Have to run down to the post office -- I have a package there, and our mail is not delivered here in the mountains, the town is just to small to offer delivery of mail services. Guess we are lucky to even have a post office -- we don't have a bank or a grocery store. Not even a gas station. I told you it is out in the boonies! lol

I know what you mean, it is 10 minute exercise a day. Some I think I will substitute for something I can do, but I just would really like to make myself move more. If you check on challenge page, you can see what they require each day. Hugs

What type of a challenge is it? I need more of a description. There are many things I can't keep up with at my age, I find I am not nearly as limber as I used to be. I need to start doing more of the softer, stretching exercises to loosen up my joints.

Yes, it has been. However, I am not working much this morning because I wasn't sure if the floor would be dry. I've stuck felt onto the feet of the chairs so they don't scratch the floor and I've brought bits and pieces back so I can teach a few of my pupils. It looks very bare!

Sorry to have been MIA for the last week or so. We have had visitors from Germany this last week who need teaching English in the mornings and then taking out and about on sightseeing trips in the afternoons and at the weekend. It was great fun, but very hard work because I was on the go from 7 in the morning till 10 at night for a full 8 days. I took them back to the airport yesterday. I cam back and spent the afternoon and evening teaching before clearing the music room of cupboards, computer desk, chairs and the table so the floor in there and the hall could be sanded, oiled and waxed. It's having a second coat tomorrow so Sunday I'll be getting all the furniture back in on Sunday evening as it takes well over 12 hours to dry fully.
Hope you all have a great weekend. emoticon

Made the decision the Christmas tree will go in the mountain home as it is so much bigger, and I am in the process of cleaning and rearranging the great room right now. The tree itself of course will go in the bay window where it can be enjoyed by all walking or driving by.

So next trip down to Sun City will bring up the tree and whichever ornaments I need. I think this year the theme will be teddy bears as all my wooden furniture is natural oak. Should look good and I'll buy some new red Christmas pills to put on the sofa and loveseat.

Can't wait to get myself engrossed in this!

Wow, you really must have had a lot of books, Rosa -- but you are doing a great job of getting the clutter cleaned away.

I am going to start doing that with clothing again soon. Some will just be thrown out as I see a little hole or two, no one wants or needs them. And if I wait until the last week-end of the month I can go to the local Thrift Store and for $4 can fill up a huge garbage bag with all the clothing it will hold. It's a good time to stock up on different tops, and as they are used mostly for gardening and such, why spend hundreds of dollars for a few new tops when I can get them for $4

Have a nice Sunday everyone!

Had a great weekend, with work yesterday and a lot of clearing out achieved. I've filled 4 big boxes of books ready for collection by Sue Ryder Charity on Tuesday and I will go in to their shop tomorrow to pick up 6 more boxes. I'm also packing up boxes of games which hopefully will find a good home. It'll be great to reduce some of the clutter which we've lived with for years.

Some Humor:

There comes a time when a woman just has to trust her husband
For example

A wife comes home late at night, and quietly opens the door to her bedroom.
From under the blanket she sees four legs instead of two.
She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can.
Leaving the covered bodies groaning, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink.
As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine.
"Hi Darling", he says,
"Your parents have come to visit us, so l let them stay in our bedroom.
Did you say "hello"?

Sounds like us, Rosa -- we planted six plants of blackberries. We didn't think to make sure they were thornless, but they were excellent producers. I was gone much of the summer to Florida to help with my future son-in-law, and the ladies in the neighborhood got to pick them. But while I was home I got enough to make about 12 pints of blackberry jam, plus loads of them that I ate plus putting them in my smoothies.

But the point is, they had thorns and they spread out shoots far and wide, a thorny mess. So we are having them all taken out and have new THORNLESS blackberries ordered that should arrive the beginning of November.

I got my new dog last night and I guess I should not be such a warrior for the underdog. He doesn't like me and has already bit me in the ankle, making it bleed. Then I was in the other room and heard him bark so I came out to see if anyone was outside, and he came rushing up to me snapping. I thought I was going to get bitten again, but he stopped before he got to me. He is deaf and blind in one eye, so I guess it was a very bad choice. I just felt sorry for him to have no home when I saw him. But he's no fun at all, I can't even touch him. He will go for walks with me, but I'd like a little more than that.

Another lovely sunny day, so I got in a couple of hours in the garden again, weeding and chopped down a couple of buddlieas. They were supposed to be dwarf, but not much dwarf about them. I'll put the branches through the shredder and add them to the composter on Friday and we'll dig them up and put something a bit better size in their place for next year.

You should have the cataracts taken care of Kurtzie. There is nothing to it at all, and it will make your life soooooo much easier. Just do it. By the time you get to our age there are very few people who have not had it done.

If you are skeptical, have one eye done at a time.

NIce day, mopped floors, got a halloween manicure, will take a picture of nails and post it here.
Also got an eye exam, left eye has gotten a little less but not worth changing prescription. Cataracts staying about the same. I did tell him I can't see up close as well as I did, have to keep getting stronger reading glasses. My left eye was stronger then my right eye but dr said it it trying to catch up to right eye and that is why I maybe seeing the difference. Will check in in year and see how cataracts are doing unless I complain and my eyes get worse.

Have a great week. Hugs all

Sorry not to have been very active lately. Life just seems to have taken over since August. We had our daughter and grandchildren over for 5 weeks during July and August which was a very busy and chaotic time for us, with several big family get togethers, a holiday in Cornwall and having to reorganise all the bedrooms. Since they left, all the bedrooms had to be put back to rights, and I've been redecorating with the help of my son's partner. I am still trying to get the house sorted after moving so much furniture from room to room. Now I am catching up on the gardening, as there is so much to do - weeding, picking and storing apples, harvesting the potatoes and runner beans which are still gong strong. I will try and be more active now.

I don't know what to do about the inactivity on this team. I know summer time sees some of us busier than usual, it's usually a nicer to time to take our vacations, but folks, if we don't check into our favorite teams more often, what is the sense in even belonging to them?

Would any of you out there like to have a little challenge? Let's see how many of us can accumulate a total of 465 minutes of exercise for the month of August. I will start a separate posting on it, and we can go on their daily, or once a week or whenever you want and post your minutes. I usually get about 60 to 90 minutes in on the days I take a walk, so even for those of us who have problems, 15 minutes a day should be something we can accomplish.

Yes, 15 minutes x 31 days in August = 465 minutes of exercise. Your choice of what it is to be. Walking, ironing, housework, yoga, pilates, gardening -- you name it, it all counts. Be sure to enter it on your fitness tracker so it will be easy to remember. I'll give out a goodie to all of those who make the 465 minutes this month. Next month we'll think of something else.

Just though I'd share my latest acrylic painting with you since our home burned down, and I had to buy all new supplies. This is my first one since then.

I call this one "Bare Trees" and I love sunsets -- somehow the photo doesn't look quite as good as the original.

I know what you mean, Eve...I also ended the year eating the wrong things & I know I have gained, just have been afraid to get on the scale, but I vow to do it tomorrow. I have to see where i am & how much I need to get rid of...as always, so easy to put on, so hard to take off!
Hope the New Year is good to you!

I know, each year it's basically the same thing. We make resolutions and swear we will do better in the new year. But as the very same thing seems to happen each year it makes you wonder how well we will stick to our new resolutions. I seem to always hit my peak for losing weight about mid-summer. Last summer it was 136.6 then after several catastrophes I found myself more like a yo-yo, and then with the holidays I did really bad and ended up at 142. It's not good to end the year on such a sour note.

Of course I have learned so much during the years I've been on SparkPeople. It's good to know which fruits are the most healthy, and which veggies provide which nutrients. It is motivating to see what so many of the members have accomplished. It's sad that we can so easily be tempted by various foods and by whatever season it is. I know it is human nature, but it is probably one of the reasons why so many Americans suffer from obesity.

As December is speeding its way to the 25th -- just wondering as we are all 'active seniors' how many of us still decorate our home completely? Or have you downsized to just doing the inside? Maybe further downsized to just a tree? Or skip the tree and just put up a few other touches of the Christmas spirit?

I seriously thought of NOT putting up a tree this year -- it's been years since I have not put up a tree, and it only happened one December because my house was up for sale, and the Real Estate Agent said it would be "distracting." But then I learned that I will have company off and on through most of the month! Out came the Christmas tree and a few other things. I love the feeling it brings to the home!

Let's hear from some of you as to how you handle Christmas now that you are retired.

That is great news that ya'll will have a trailer to stay in while your house is being built..always nice to be able to supervise, plus the added bonus of being cooler. We just got back from lunch out & several errands & I am exhausted, going to crash in front of the TV & eat watermelon for dessert!

One of the Spark Streaks I have no trouble keeping is the 8 glasses of water. But when it comes to walking my mile or two, I'll have to admit I haven't done as well. When it is 111F to 120F you melt the minute you go out the door. And unless I decide to "drive" my dog over to the park, much to hot for her to walk on the sidewalk. No wonder my feet are burning by the time we get home.

There is always the gym, but with all the errands we've had lately, I'm exhausted and don't think it would do me a lot of good to go to the gym at that point. Not excuses, but reasons. I am looking forward to all that changing next week when we go back to Yarnell.

WooHoo...Today I completed 365 days of my "Spark Streaks"! Now, I gues I'll go for 2 years!
I'm having a bad summer physically, have osteochrondrtis in my ankles & my right knee is inflamed, haven't been able to exercise in weeks now & I miss it! I refuse to become a couch potato, so I'm going to start lifting weights this week to get some movement going..

Eve, I'm sorry about your troubles & losses...Sometimes life really throws us a curve, doesn't it?
Weight wise, I still have 8 pounds to go to get back where I was...

Made it to the gym today, so I did good today. Exercise + the right food!

Also heard from the insurance people, and miracle of miracles, they are going to put a travel trailer on the empty lot next to where our home burned and we can stay in it free until our new home is built. It will be a one bedroom with a King-sized bed in a slide out. Also a slide out in the living room, so that sounds nice. We have to bring our own kitchen stuff, like dishes, pots and pans, silverware, bathroom stuff, bed covers, etc. And of course our clothing and food. But it even has a TV, so it will be sooooo nice to get back to the cooler weather and we'll be right there to watch and answer questions when things come up during the build.

I'm getting excited! emoticon

I know we're not big on "chatting" here on 'Active Seniors' but it would be nice to hear from more of you about what's going on in your daily lives, or at least have you check in once a week or so, to let us know how you're doing.

As many of you know, the last week was pretty bad (and good) for DH and I. Our summer home was one of those totally burned to the ground in the Yarnell Fire. The worst part is that 19 brave, young firemen lost their lives when the wind shifted suddenly and they were trapped with the fire all around them.

The last part of the week was kind exciting for us, but very exhausting. I'm the type of person who usually plans no more than one major thing to do each day -- keeping the rest of the day open for things I may want to do (like my daily nap - lol). Suddenly we found ourselves busy all day as we explored companies who build manufactured homes. One appointment was made by mistake when we found out he was a regular contractor who does stick-built homes. We didn't think with our insurance coverage we could afford to go with stick built. And, as all of our clothing and furniture -- everything in fact was gone, we needed to shop for clothing and other personal things as well.

I don't want to write a whole 'book' here, and I covered bits and pieces of it in my blogs, but you can see the last 12 days have been pretty hectic for us.

I hope others will take the time to let us know more about their lives, and let me get to know you a little better.

Hugs to all, Eve

I don't know who was the most excited about me coming home after 2 weeks in Mexico an Belize -- me or my dog, Amber! She jumps on the sofa next to me, then runs wildly through the house, jumps back on the sofa -- repeating this time after time until she is exhausted. I'm so exhausted from the vacation I don't think I could muster up that much energy to show her I'm happy to see her too!

It's great to be back! Eve

I have just gone through our entire "My Birthday Is ----- list" and have eliminated all persons who have dropped out of our Team. If your name is not on the list, please copy the entire post and add your name and birthday in. If you don't know how, send me a note to let me know when your birthday is, and I will do it for you.
