I've pretty much decided not to go to the one on Weds. That one costs $8 a shot, or you can get 12 swims for $65. That's a summer price, and it will all change after August. I can't justify that cost on top of the money I already spent. So yes, Heather, I think I'll probably wait till Fall. The other one hasn't called me back yet, but I'm pretty sure you have to be a member there to swim with their Masters club, on top of the Masters fee, so my hunch is that one will be out too.

On the upside, I found out the pool where I have my pass offers private lessons for $30 for a half hour. Not exactly cheap, but I could probably swing one of those over the summer and another in the fall. But I have to find out exactly what they do during that half hour. I need to be evaluated and given tips on improving my stroke.

Don't feel bad about the free workouts. That's their marketing plan and it's built into the group structure.

Laurie, I hear ya on the money. My suggestion would be to use your pass this summer and then see if master's fits in your schedule in the fall. If not, school will end soon and then you'll have a bit better control over your schedule. Set yourself up for success!

It's funny; money is holding me back too. I feel a little guilty because I've gotten two free workouts at two different clubs (first one is free)...but even if I don't sign up now, I know I will in the future.

Okay, called two different teams, left a voicemail with one, and will try to go watch a practice this Wednesday evening.

Problem -- I have no money. This costs money. And I already spent $74 that I really couldn't afford on my pool pass for the summer. No masters team at this pool. Argh...

I have to try this. I am writing down the contact person's phone number as we speak and I will call him tomorrow.

I will call him tomorrow.

Will someone please hold me accountable?

Experience #2.
Today I tried out another masterís swim program. I am lucky that there are many nearby programs.

Before I get to my comments about the program, a question to any early master swimmer out there that might be reading:

How do you manage your life when you go swimming at 5 in the morning? Does it impact your social engagements in the evenings? Is it difficult to get to sleep early so you can wake up early?

Now, my experience:

This program has a ĎMasters 101í clinic that was suggested for me when I inquired about the program. It was a very easy swim, but the coach offered a variety of suggestions to improve our swimming. He even video taped us. All this for the cost of FREE!

Some of the coachís suggestions go counter to what you typically hear, but I liked him. He said try it and if it doesnít help, go back to your original methods. One impressive thing about this club is that many of the coaches have Olympic experience, even collecting a medal or two. I know that doesnít mean it will help me, but it still is encouraging.

He showed us how to swim against the clock. That is something we donít do in my current community swim class. What I liked best is that he tailored some of his pointers to the swimmerís ability. A couple of swimmers were much faster than me, and for once I wasnít the slowest person in the pool. It was an interesting perspective and I found myself rooting for her. I guess thatís what other swimmers feel for me, when they see me struggling or pushing and not going fast.

The best thing about these two experiences is that both the coaches and the swimmers are very welcoming. The coaches offer suggestions that could help me improve and perhaps move from the slow lane into a faster lane. However, my goal is really to improve my form and get more comfortable in my ability and increase my endurance and get more fit.

The bottom line is that the programs seem to be able to accommodate both the novice swimmer and the more experienced swimmer and both can benefit.

There are still a couple more programs to try and Iím also considering going at it alone for a bit, but Iíll figure it out by the time June rolls out.

Goriana-YEAH on getting to the masters class. I love mine and I'm one of the slowest in pool and at 58 all that matters it that I'm in the pool. I've improved over the last 3 year and even have learned flip turns and butterfly.

I've also been in a few meets. Our team holds one every August and the first year I didn't participate. Then the next year, after having mastered turns, coach said just do the 50 free, so I did both the 50 (52.43 seconds) and the 100 (2 min. 2 seconds) free. Do I have a fast time NO, did I have a great time, YES. And we all got a great laugh at me swimming with my goggles on my chin for the 50. I'm still working on the dive off the blocks. Last year I did the 50 (50 seconds) and 100 (1min. 56 seconds)free again and improved my times. I also went with the team to another meet and did the 50 (50 seconds) free, 50 (1 min.) back and 2 relays. So I'll be swimming in our meet again this summer and maybe another.

So anyone who is hesitant about a meet just do it!

I just came home from my first master class and I was lucky that the first person I talked to called herself the slowest swimmer and learned how to swim in the masters class. Then I met the lady that runs the program and teaches the kids that use the pool before us. The coach was very encouraging and told me my fly was a valiant effort emoticon

I am also considering another program, but this one is so convenient as it is right by office.

In short (because I am w/o a proper keyboard this moment) I had a great time and I did not feel out of place at all.

There's a masters team practice about 10 minutes up the street from me. Every masters team in my area has practices on Monday and Wednesday nights and I've never been able to go because I'm always in class at those times. However, this fall I will be free on Monday nights and this team has a Saturday morning practice as well.

Is this someone's idea of kicking me in the butt?

GORIANA....What is the latest? Have you watched or gone to a practice yet? I can't recommend Masters Swimming enough! I joined one 5 years ago and you should have seen me! I was dying! But the coach was wonderful. She took me and another new guy with similar BAD swimming technique and put us at the end lane where she could walk along our swimming and give us pointers and drills while the others were swimming her program.

I AM THE SLOWEST SWIMMER ON OUR TEAM EVEN NOW! And let me tell you...no one cares! So long as you are swimming on your side, doing your thing, you will not affect anyone else's swimming at all. Occasionally, we will do sprints as a group. This can be intimidating for a slow swimmer like me. Again...any coach worth their weight in gold will be encouraging and mine (different coach now than from when I started) tells me to skip an interval here or there while the others go. All the other swimmers are very supportive of me and one another. No one looks at me as a detriment to their practice at all. I probably make them feel faster! LOL!

So here it is 5 years later and I'm the unofficial team captain of sorts. I started a facebook page for our team and am the main communicator for upcoming events and plan open water swims for our team in the summertime. They are most appreciative because no one, not even the coaches, have tied the group together with communication and fun events before. I love my teammates and we are like a big family.

I do not do the races either. Most of us don't, actually. About 2-4 will go to races. Our coach said his goal was to get us all in at least one race next season. I just may take him up on it. What the heck? I'm 56 years old and at the age where I don't care what anyone thinks anymore. LOL The ones that race said there are lots of people at the races who don't swim fast. They told me from what they've seen, there's no way I'd be the slowest either. And even if I was....I really wouldn't care.

Point is....Have fun. Meet new people. Get great swim tips, good exercise. And did I say fun? I hope you join and have a GREAT experience! You will improve. I sure did, even though I'm the slowest, I'm still better than I was!

Thanks. The team I am considering lets me have one free workout, so I need to try it. I just came back from the gym and that pool always frustrates me because the other swimmers do not know how to share lanes and too often I am surprised by someone crossing across my lane right in front of me. Whatever I find at the masters' pool, it will not be lane crossers!

I joined a master's team 3 years ago with no competitive swimming experience. I've always been able to do a lot of laps, I just don't challenge myself and I can make excuses for not swimming. At the time our team let you have 3 trial swims before having to pay to join (that's changed due to the arrangement with the pool where we swim). So see if that's a possibility along with Laurie's suggestion about visiting and talking to the coach(es). We have 3 different practice times with 3 different coaches. It's also interesting that in the morning I'm in the slowest lane and at noon or evening swims I'm about 2-3 lanes faster. So each group is different. I love out team because they are so accepting and encouraging. The coaches give you as much or as little attention as you want. There's a woman who started swimming with us since May 1st, in my lane in the morning who, as the way she put it, just learned how "sloppy" her stroke is and the coach has been working with her each day. She started with a kick board and fins and yesterday she swam the whole 60 minutes at her pace without fins or kick board. So go find a masters team.

I would also like to try masters, also for conditioning and learning, not for competing. I have this same problem too. I'm worried about making a fool of myself. Unfortunately, I haven't even had a chance to try because all the masters practices around me are at times when I can't go.

What I would do though, (will do, if I ever find a practice time when I'm available) is start by talking to the coach and maybe watching a practice or two to get a feel for the team's personality. The coach will want to know exactly where you are and what your goals are anyway, and may even want to do an assessment before he/she sticks you in the water with a bunch of people you can't keep up with. At least that is what I would hope and expect for myself.

How about Kourtney and Kelly? They have lots of experience with masters swimming.

I want to give masters swimming a try.

I don't want to compete. I just want to condition. I've only been swimming a year and I have a lot of things to improve.

I'm afraid I'll make the regulars unhappy because I'm going in slow motion while they speed around me.

Any advice on how to fit in with the people in the pool? What can I expect?

I feel the anxiety of always being picked last in P.E. whenever I do anything athletic... (though I've been making steady progress in my swimming ability, it's still infantile compared to some of the others in my current swimming for fitness class that competed as kids)
