Ugh! Sorry to hear about the car!

Gym is easier for me on work days too. @ home I'm often doing things like mowing the lawn or getting out for walks.

I like to aim for SOME sort of cardio every day and strength training 3 x week.

Keep at it and workouts can build into a wonderful positive "habit!"

As I only hit the gym on the days I work (due to distance) my streak will be hit and miss. My somewhat modified goal is to work out everyday I work.

Last week I only missed one day and that was because my daughter was in a car accident. (She's fine, car's totaled).

Nutritional tracking is a BIGGIE! It is probably THE BIGGEST factor in dropping the pounds. Working out and exercise is super for improving our health and toning our bodies, but watching those calories is #1 for dropping the pounds, in my opinion.

Kudos to YOU!

Phyllis, ditto on the electronic impediments. I just love when I've just gotten started tracking and doing my Other Goals and the system slows to a crawl or goes into maintenance mode. Or when I've tracked some items and they don't appear where they are supposed to be.

Today marks TWO MONTHS of cardio streaking for me!

Woo Hoo!!

Haven't missed any of my 3 x week strength training either...and have been building up the number of reps and sets.

What streaks are others building out there...?

I do fine with my streaks until the world of electronics lets me down. This has happened to me a few times. On Thursday I cheerfully enterd my ticks on my Other Goals page, slowly I might add.
On Friday I went in to check off Friday's and guess what? Thursdays had all gone. I still had my sparkpoints but no ticks.

Hey folks, there's a new article about Spark Streaks if anyone is looking for inspiration:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivat

n_articles.asp?id=988

I've just completed my first week of seven consecutive days of cardio...and am hoping to extend it by a whole bunch!

I remember in my earlier days with SparkPeople being able to go 30, 60 days or more with no interruptions to my daily cardio. Hoping to reclaim such streaking again!

The easiest streak is exercise 30 minutes three times a week. This is because the dogs need two walks a day. The protein and fiber breakfast is not hard because I am a morning person and make wise decisions about food and exercise early in the day. Login is easy because I need sparkpeople every day.

Just want to make sure you don't think I am running. I am not. Just the streak.

I went to my "other goals" and am setting up a list of exercises videos I want to do. I have about 7, so I am only listing them for once per week. I know that some will be more often. I especially did this for stretching videos. I need that as much as anything.

Water is the easiest of my streaks...the streaking I miss which I used to do routinely during my heyday of losses was to go 30-60 or even more days of cardio each day without a break!

Hoping I can find that fire to do this again soon!

I joined Spark People Oct. 2.
I have several streaks being monitored for various teams. One is running for two months.

But for some reason, my 8 glasses of water/day never shows much a streak, even though that should be my most successful streak.

Wonderful job streaking there!! WTG!!

I have allowed myself to be sidetracked lately through traveling, illness and recently having difficulty adjusting to the dark mornings and oversleeping...once I've missed my morning treadmill time there just seems to be no dragging me onto the darned thing! My day just runs away with itself and I'm too wiped to do it later in the evening. Ugh!

Hopefully with the "falling back" of the clock this weekend I'll get better acclimated and reclaim my SPARK! :-)

I guess it depends on how long you've tried without success. Do you drink other things besides water...? If so, perhaps you can try to drink less of those other things to get your thirst for water to increase?

Earlier on in my workout routines I was VERY dedicated and made every effort not to miss ANY cardio sessions all seven days of the week. I would go MONTHS without missing a session. These days I'm less compulsive about it, but still go for 2-3 weeks without missing a session. What drives me is that I know I need to keep this activity level up so that I don't gain weight and hopefully so that I keep losing.

Streaking is such a personal struggle...let us know what you decide to do! :-)

I am beginning to wonder if my streaks are set too high. For example, 5 glasses of water a day doesn't sound like a lot, but for me that's 5 more than usual! What do you guys think? Keep the streaks the same with likely frequent failure, or decrease the streak standard and "achieve" more?

Thus far this month I have only missed ONE day of cardio, and that was due to traveling back from MI for 12 hours. On the way out, tho, I DID manage to hop the treadmill after the 12 hour drive!

So it's been a pretty streakin' month. I've been annoyed with myself for not having gotten on my bicycle since getting back from MI on 8/12. Now that the days are getting shorter, I'm really feeling the pinch of getting my outdoor FIX!

I remember earlier on in my recovery being dedicated enough to maintain a streak for 30 days, even longer!

Perhaps all those "easier" pounds being dropped were more motivating...?

Couldn't persuade anyone to go for a walk...mostly retired folks, living up to the old fogie rep...lol!

BUT: managed to hop on the bicycle for a bit after I got home tonight...so the STREAK CONTINUES! :-)

Coming up on a streak hurdle:

Been doing cardio every day since 7/1, but TOMORROW I have to get up @ 4 a.m. to take my son to the airport, and plan to just go on from there to work early. I KNOW I'm going to be WAY to beat to tackle cardio by the time I get home around 5 pm.

If I could only fit my bicycle into my car, I might be able to ride it during the noon hour. On the other hand (this thinking out loud stuff really helps...lol!) since I'm meeting a bunch of old colleagues at the park for a byo lunch, perhaps we can get some walking in together...?

Looks like I have a campaign to wage! :-)

I blew my June streak after only 7 days...grrr!

It was just too darned hot and muggy Sun. / Mon. and even today was a challenge, but I beat myself up too much when I don't workout...so today working out was the lesser of evils...lol!

So...we'll see what I can accomplish THIS time! I haven't had my month-long streaks like I used to...

Dummy me...they DO have a fitness room after all! I guess I was so beat by the end of the day hefting all those paper boxes around that I just didn't look far enough...lol. So did I blow the streak if I worked all day moving paper but didn't pick up dumb bells or get on a treadmill...? Yeah...it really isn't the same. So...been having a super day today using the pool, fitness equipment, whirlpool and drying in the glorious sunshine...woo hoo!

Going to try to soak up some more of this tomorrow before check out time...! :-)

Don

PS... oh YES, BTW folks...my treadmill has been inhabited by electronic gremlins lately, so went treadmill shopping today and found a Sole F63 at Dick's on sale for 50% for $1000. Much less than I feared I would have to spend, but the unit appears to be as sturdy and well-reviewed as a $2000 model I had considered...so the cheapskate in me did the happy-happy dance...lol. It even has a fan, allows my mp3 player to be plugged in and has a built in heart rate monitor on the handgrips...woo hoo!

More Streak Examples from Spark_Guy:

Hello Everyone - hope you are all doing well!

I'm writing to talk about how excited I am about the new SparkStreaks feature!

A streak is one of the reasons that I ended up starting SparkPeople. Many years ago, I started a streak of working out at least 10 minutes every day. I ended up doing this 700 days in a row and it changed my life (the local newspaper even did a small story on this at the time, that was fun). This was both because of the improved fitness AND the confidence I gained from this adventure.

Along the way, a co-worker started something similar. She lost 50 pounds and told me I changed her life. She then went on to start a walking group where people said, "if you can do it, we can do it!" That's when I realized that "Your daily actions and words impact more people than you'll ever realize!"

One of the most important parts about a streak is to only use it as a positive motivator. You aren't allowed to get too upset if you miss a day. That's why we built in the consistency percentage.

I want everyone on the site to know that I am right in here with you working hard to reach goals. So, I'm making a commitment to keep my SparkPoints login streak as close to 100% as I possibly can and making that public - and I'll have one for 10 minutes of fitness as well. Everyone can hold me publicly accountable for this. Maybe we'll have to come up with a fun contest :).

Doubt anyone is splitting hairs around here...lol, but for me I am looking to do cardio everyday...and I've been wanting to post my progress...but I forgot when I last blew it! :-)

I think it was toward the end of April as I know I haven't missed a day in May...so that's 22 days, woo hoo!

But as to whether it's cardio or strength training...anything goes! So long as we're MOVING every day!

I've recently upped my strength-training where I'm working up a nice sweat by the end of 40 minutes or so...figure I get a two-fer...strength AND cardio benefit!

So YES! Everyone get Streaking out there!

Now...I think this idea has caught on in other venues...check out what our Coaches are saying about a NEW FEATURE offered by SparkPeople related to streaking:
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal.asp?id=sparkguy_spteam

Also here's what Spark_Coach Jen has to say about the new Streaking feature:

We launched a new feature today called SparkStreaks, where you can challenge yourself to reach certain goals every day (or week or month if you'd like). We know that members track streaks on their own, so we wanted to create this feature to make it easier to track. Streaks are a great way to give you extra motivation to reach your goals.

You can view and manage your SparkStreaks by clicking on My Home/Start, then finding a link to SparkStreaks in the "myTools" section on the left of the page. When you click to your Streaks page, you'll see all the Streaks you are tracking. We made it so everyone has a Streak for logging in to the site and spinning the SparkPoints wheel and for drinking 8 cups of water a day. You can click the "Start/Manage Streaks" button to decide what goals you want to track a Streak, and to choose if you want to share your Streaks publicly. You can share Streaks on your SparkPage, and for SparkTeam goals you can share your Streak on your SparkTeam goal page. When you share on your SparkPage, your Streaks will appear on left side of your SparkPage under your main pictures.

To track your Streak you simply track your goals as your normally would. You can click the "See More SparkStreaks" link on your Start page to see details of your streaks, including:
- Your current streak length for the goal.
- The longest streak you ever had for the goal.
- A consistency percentage for the goal. Even if you drop off a streak, you can still see how often you did the goal. So, if you did the goal 9 of 10 days, you'd have a 90% consistency rate. If you want to re-start this counting to today, just click the "reset" link in the Consistency section.

We hope you like this feature and that it can help keep you motivated to reach some amazing goals!

I like the "streaking" idea!!! I'll try it.
What defines a streak? Is it doing cardio everyday or just doing either Cardio or Weight training everyday?
I did notice that I get better results with everyday activity of some sort! emoticon

I like the sound of this streak. I am in. It means working out on days when I am on-call, and (even harder) the days when I am post-call. I am a resident, so "on-call" means 30-hours straight in the hospital, admitting patients, taking care of patients, doing procedures, etc. It happens every 4th day for me, and usually I take off the on-call days, and have a hard time motivating when I post-call and tired.

It'll be tough, but I need a little added boost to get me going again.

Good luck, everyone!!

Don, thanks for setting this up!

I'm with you Don and I hear everything you are saying. Not taking care of myself the way I should has definitely impacted my ability to stay on track and be consistent. It's so aggravating.

I think it is great that you can identify what is holding you back. Now you can attack those things and change it around. Of course, how do you change the fact that there is only one Don with an expanding practice???

Just do the best you can. You are such a great team leader. So inspirational. And we appreciate you sharing all that you do with us.

I have had the hardest time lately sticking with my streaks! I started my latest streak on 4/12, but broke it this past Saturday on 4/26. Better than my last streak, but I remember going MONTHS without missing a single day.

PLUS my workouts have been much harder lately, despite my not changing anything...same time, same intensity / speed...just MUCH more effort required to complete it. My momentum has been really flagging.

I think I know the culprits, however this has been a problem all along...just think it is catching up with me:

Culprit #1: Not getting EIGHT hours of sleep each night.

Culprit #2: My private practice has been increasing, less "down" time for myself. My work week totals around 55-60 hours these days.

I know I HAVE to get focused on rabidly guarding my sleep and getting more of it! This past Sunday I slept in for 10 hours and felt SOOOOO much better!

I'll wager there are many out there who struggle with this also...what do folks do to insure enough sleep for yourselves?

Well, I have to 'fess up...I took a day off the day after I returned from NYC (blog on that to follow). I had gotten into bed around 1 a.m., up next morning for work @ 6 a.m. and just couldn't drag myself onto the 'mill...had hoped to later in evening but was too whupped. At least it was a ten day streak.

Back at it today tho!

Grrrr...this is a tough one for me. As of late, the weather has been a bit dreary, and I am overloaded at work. I don't feel like doing anything, let alone cardio every day. BUT...I will try, starting today, to get a streak of say 14 days of cardio. That is a lofty goal, but if you guys can do it, then I am in! emoticon

I'm in for the streak. I went all of March without missing a day (due to the challenge) and so far this month so I guess that would put me on day 38.

Hey guys. Is there any way to download some of the songs onto my MP3 player through the Sparksounds web site? I would love to have them while working out!

I have been through PT. I am also a Massage therapist and have worked as a PT Assistant in the past.

I think my main problem is that I used to be a triathlete/dancer/hiker. I was obviously very active then after an accident I was left with several injuries. I want to be back to where I was and when I try to exercise I end up pushing myself harder than I should.

Water aerobics doesn't hurt but it is annoying because everyone is much older than me and I lap then several times in the pool with very little effort. I was thinking of trying Deep water aerobics but not sure how that would feel. I have done spinning as well and sometimes it is okay other times the bike sends spasms through my back or sometimes my leg.

It is funny that you mention yoga because I was just asking my chiro about that. He said I should take it easy and don't do anything that hurts and if I find something that hurts then modify it so that it doesn't. I also have a friend that works as a pilates instructor so I may try that. I am just not sure if pilates will hurt or not because of use of the core. But many of the exercises would be similar to what the PT would do.

I guess it will be trial and error. : ) But I will be watching you guys and making sure you stick to your "streaking" I need some motivation! : )

Ugh...tough spot to be in!

Have you worked with a physical therapist...? They can sometimes be quite ingenious in their recommendations.

Also possibly some of the gentler forms of Tai Chi or yoga...?

Also, another point to point out too with exercise every day that you don't need to run a marathon. It is basic exercise that you do to keep yourself fit. You can have hard days and light days as well. Which is what a lot of advanced people do. GOod LUck!

On another note. I have been unable to exercise due to back problems. WHat would you guys suggest? Bike hurts. Walking is out (although I walk my dog)(I also have an old leg injury that hasn't healed). Swimming is out (A shoulder injury) : ) Maybe I am a little rough! : ) But any way I have tried everything that I can think of. My chiro says relax and do what feels right. None of it does.

With strength-building rests are important, however when it comes to cardio us humans can be regular ol' Energizer bunnies! Even strength-building can occur daily if one rotates through different muscle groups.

However, your mileage may certainly vary! This is intended to be a very personal, individualized challenge to just kick it up a notch with our workouts and see how it goes.

I wouldn't want anyone to push themselves to a point where working out is painful or it becomes so unenjoyable that we avoid our workouts! So each of us try what works for you.

thanks for the reminder.............i thought your body needed as rest day in there somewhere???

Don't Look Ethel! (for all of us old farts who remember the song...lol!)

No, no, no...I'm NOT challenging us to do THAT kind of streaking...! :-)

Instead, I thought it would be fun to set up yet one MORE type of challenge: A streak is when we have several days or more of working out without ANY skipped days. We've all streaked to some degree or another...as little as two days in a row, and some of us have gone for MONTHS without interruption!

For me the big culprits for breaking my streaks have been my BLASTED FEET! Also traveling and vacationing have worked against me. Sometimes illness will grind things to a halt...unavoidably, of course!

This is another ongoing challenge, similar to the Weigh-In, where we continue to prod ourselves forward and see how many days in a row we can STREAK our workouts and reap those rewards!!

I recently began my current streak at the beginning of the month and am on Day Seven of this streak. I am aiming to reach the end of the month without interruption.

Let's get streaking folks!

Post our goals and how we're doing. Share your successes and setbacks as well as tips for how one sticks with your streak!
