Your relative may find this interesting... fish is not the BEST source for omega 3's:

Flaxseeds and walnuts beat out salmon and other marine life.

There is also a supplement from Europe that is a vegan capsule of Omega-3's from algae--the source of the omega-3's in fish! I bought it from this website: www.water4.net but Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe (and maybe others) are trying to import it to the US. It is recommended by Vesanto Melina, a vegan nutrtionist. I'll try to let you know if I notice any differences from taking the supplement.

Hi all, hope you're doing well!

I'm a bit late to this post, but today I got the latest in an ongoing series of e-mails from a relative of mine who is CONVINCED there's no way to be veg and be healthy!

YEARS more research needs to be done, of course, but I'm hoping to get the thoughts of a few more veg-friendly folks.
http://health.msn.com/general/articlepag
e.aspx?cp-documentid=100166680&page=1

The article mentioned a couple of things I found quite interesting. First off, it mentions that fish get the high levels of Omega 3s by eating seaweed, but it never once mentions that I can get mine that way too. I know a lot of folks don't like it, but I happen to really enjoy it. I thought fish oil was foul before I ever quit eating meat...

Another is the imbalance of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids in the typical American diet. Some of the current research seems to show that that imbalance leads to a lot of the inflammatory problems that lead to disease states. I can't help but wonder if the research was controlled for people who use the less healthy cooking oils or eat meat (another source of Omega 6)? It seems to me they would indeed have much higher levels of Omega 6s, and thus possibly more inflammation. I know I noticed a reduction in things like that both when I quit eating meat and when I cut out the unhealthy oils a few months ago.

What do y'all think? I'm thinking I'll stick with my seaweed and flax seeds. I probably won't bother arguing with my relative though! He DOES eat meat and probably the other unhealthy stuff, so fish oil might be the best thing for him. I don't think it's bad in itself, I guess I just get tired of the constant onslaught of "you must eat fish to be healthy, no matter what!!!" especially when I don't preach to him about what HE eats...

emoticon

Peace.

Under revision...

You must have submitted it to SparkPeople recipes, which is wonderful. If you'd like to post it in "Our own Recipe Book". Here is that url...

You might even find a vegetarian recipe you'd like to try. As I was helping an elderly friend move bunches of books...she loaned me a really old Beans cookbook. It sold for only 15 cents! I have been posting the vegetarian friendly ones there. I am a Lacto Ovo Vegetarian, but I believe many of them could be easily made vegan. Have fun!~Peggy

Did you see that we have a recipe board on the team called "Our Own Recipe Book"? It would be wonderful if you would share that there so others can use it.
Thank you, Peggy

Peggy, Thank you. I remembered a long time ago I used flaxseed to make a french toast. It was so delicious.
French Toast
3T. flax seeds
1/2 cup water
1 cup soy milk
8 slices bread
Grind the flaxseeds until powder. Add the water and blend for one min. Beat the flax seed mixture into the soy milk. Dip the bread into this mixture and cook until browned in a non-skillet. Served with syrup or applesauce. . .I think I did put little butter on the skillet.

You are very welcome. You might want to consider using flaxseed. I buy the seed whole (health food store) and grind it in my blender. One tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with three tablespoons water can be sustituted for one egg in baking or pancakes.

Now you must consider that the following is from an article where they sell the product....

"Citing the potential for lower blood lipid levels of omega-3 fatty acids in vegetarians, the American Dietetic Association has advised that, ³it is recommended that vegetarians include a good source of ALA in their diet. ² The ADA goes on to list flaxseed oil as the richest source of ALA. The high amount of omega-3 fatty acid in flaxseed oil will help to balance out the excessive omega-6 fatty acids prevalent in the American diet. The recommended dosage of flaxseed is from one to two tablespoons a day. However, to receive the most benefit, consumers should make a conscious choice to remove extraneous sources of omega-6 fatty acids from the diet, such as refined foods, grocery-store oils and salad dressings high in omega-6 fatty acids. It would be prudent for vegetarians to use flaxseed oil, which has a very high percentage of omega-3 fatty acid as the basis for salad dressings and in baking, instead of sunflower, corn, safflower, and soy which have a poor ratio in comparison."

ga3-deficiency.html

I personally use 2 tablespoons of fresh ground flaxseed daily. That was an interesting article. I recommend you read it entirely. I did not know that other oils interfered with Omega-3.

Hi Diana-
Actually there is not enough research to explain that--it's much more involved that you might think.

I'm not sure which article you read, but check out the explanations in our article "Mega Benefits of Omega-3's" which is located in the Nutrition Resource Center.

Basically, Omega-3's are not created equal--the sources touted for all those benefits are actually from fish (DHA), while plant-based omega-3's (EPA & ALA) are different and need to be converted into this DHA. Our bodies aren't very effecient at that, and not enough research exists to establish recommended levels of daily intake.

Either way, that article will help explain it and give you some ideas.

Hope that helps,

Nicole

Hi I read S.P.'s newsletter recently. It said that we should eat two servings of fish per week for fatty acids. I do not eat fish. We can get some walnuts or flax seeds instead of fish. I would like to know how much walnuts or flax seeds we should eat per week. Hope to get some answers from anyone.
