I was surprised to find Tempeh at Meijer this past weekend. We tried it for dinner last night following a recipe from the products website. It was called Asian Sweet & Sour Tempeh bowl made with rice noodles, chopped bell pepper, carrots, and a vinegar based sauce. The texture of the Tempeh was quite different but it took some time getting used to tofu so I'm sure that after trying it a few more ways I'll learn to like it.

Keeps about a week. If you need to keep it longer you can freeze it, with some loss of texture.

Try The Farm Vegetarian cookbook for a tempeh recipe.
It also has great recipes for making tofu, seitan, and
soy milk.

Thanks, I might try making it. How long does homemade tempeh keep in the fridge? I'm handy in the kitchen, but also very busy, so making a batch needs to be worthwhile.

I make my own tempeh, seitan and vegan sausage. I found the recipes by doing a google search for vegan meat. They do take time to make but so worth the effort. I adjust the spices I use to make different flavors - Italian, Mexican, etc.

Another vote for making your own. Extraordinarily delicious it can be. It does take time but it is mightily worth it. The pasteurized stuff sold in the shops I have always found to be difficult to eat. Tempeh needs to be refrigerated.

Yes, it is usually either in the produce section (smaller stores) or in a refrigerated section where non-cheese & meat substitutes are sold (larger health food stores). It is frequently near where the tofu is on display. You can also make your own if you are handy in the kitchen. There is no doubt that Whole Foods will have it. Good Luck!!

I've been reading a lot of vegetarian cookbooks lately, and see many recipes that use tempeh, but I can't recall seeing it in the store. I rotate through a few different grocery stores, from warehouse type, supermarket, and more upscale supermarket with a health food section, and haven't found it. Wouldn't it be next to the tofu? We do have a food co-op across town that I could check out, but with the frequency that I see it in recipes, I'm surprised that it's not more readily available. We're supposed to be getting a Whole Foods this year too, and I imagine they would have it, but it's taking them forever to get the store built.
