I love buckwheat pancakes
Speaking of sprouts, I have never given much thought to the fact that they are just little plants right? Has anyone had broccoli sprouts? I picked them up in the store yesterday.

I cook buckwheat in my rice cooker..........for cereal or side dish. But for pancakes, I buy my buckwheat flour already ground and go from there. DELICIOUS in pancakes and breads....
Oops, I see when I looked back at their site that the free shipping for orders over $25 in only for vitacost brand items; however, if you spend $49 you do get free shipping on anything... with my list, I could probably hit that price! Just have to hide the receipt from the husband, LOL!
I think I'm going to try kamut soon... it sounds delish! I found this morning a site that looks great for buying grains that you may not be able to find in your local grocery:
It appears that if you order more than $25 worth of products from their site, shipping is free! Can't beat that! So, I've made myself a little wish list (hemp seeds, amaranth, kamut, raw cashews, adzuki and mung beans, millet) and when I have a little cash to splurge, I'm going to place an order. The great thing about grains too is I can make a big order like this and they will stay good for a long time as long as I keep them in a cool dry place. Yay!

Terry, depending on the recipe, it can take a good 20 minutes or so. Check your Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Bob's Red Mill Buck Wheat is carried there. Thats where I have gotten mine. Talk to the store manager. They cycle foods in and out all the time.

Will, how long does it take buckwheat to cook? I'm not even sure buckwheat is sold in this area in whole form. I'd probably have to order it on-line. All I've ever seen it here in in ground form.

Will, when I was a kid my dad took me to a school fund raiser and they were serving buckwheat pancakes with sausage gravy---I loved it! I had never had pancakes with gravy on them, because the usual southern way in this area of serving them was just with syrup. I realized I prefered gravy on them.
One of the first things I did when I became vegan was to make a vegan version of it--it turned out pretty good, even my meat eating parents loved it! But it's rather complex to make, so I don't often do it. I'll have to try your way of simply the buckwheat with gravy on it. I'm sure I'd love it!

Hi Karen, What are examples of raw and sprouted grains and where can they be purchased?

If you're tired of eating the same old things for your whole grains, check out this site with suggestions for some others that you may have never tried or heard of before. My new favorite is Buckwheat. I served it with some vegan gravy served over it, along with some baked tofu and a spinach salad. Check this out: www.drmirkin.com/goodfood/wholegrains.html
