i found that the only way i could manage to get my required amounts of omegas (and make sure i was properly digesting it and getting the right stuff to aid the absorption into my system) was to take fish oils, 2 capsules a day. i got a great brand recommended by my naturopath. it's worth getting the extra calories, since the oils are so vital to your health.

I'm not sure. I take the algae oil supplements. You can buy algae at health food stores and at Asian markets, but I personally don't like the taste. It's very fishy. I'm also not 100% sure that all kinds of algae are high in DHA's. Maybe someone else knows?

Any tips on a good brand for algae? How do you eat it - mix it up with something?

Yes, a coffee grinder works well. Once you gind the seed you should keep it in the fridge or freezer. I add it to oatmeal or a salad.

oh! Well thanks so much for the pointers! I just discovered this ground flax thing and figured I would put it in oatmeal and stuff like that along the way.
How do you grind your flax? Would a coffee bean grinder work?
Algae - interesting! I haave Omega supplements but I don't know how fabulous they are.
Thanks again for your tips! I appreciate them!

No you can't get the same effects from vitamins. Flax is great, but it's not a complete Omega 3 fatty acid. You also need DHA's which are usually found in fish. The only vegetarian source (that I know of) is algae. I take supplements called Neuromins. They are expensive, but definitely worth it. I'm 45 years old and my skin is as soft as it was when I was 20, without the breakouts.

I also get enough fiber in my diet, so I take flax oil supplements also. I have some flax seed at home in the freezer. I don't buy the ground flax because it doesn't last long. I grind it as I need it.

I just bought ground flax seed and haven't looked at the calories - but from what you said I am assuming there are a lot of calories in it? Yikes... but it's sooooo good for us!! Can we get the same effect from vitamins?

I guess I'll eat more. Fiber isn't a problem for me, I'm eating more than 40 g a day. I just hate giving that many calories to flax.

I buy the flaxseed oil from the refrigerated section at the healthfood store, and add a tsp a day to salads or veggies. I actually like the taste of it, kind of adds a nutty taste to salads.

I was told by my Doctor to have 2 tablespoons per day. Gradually add it to your diet so you don't get a stomach ache from too much fiber all at once.

I know we vegheads need to get our omega 3's from plant sources such as olive oil and flax. I've been grinding flax seeds into flour and mixing 14 g in my oatmeal in the morning. How much is enough to get the proper amount of omega 3's? It's quite high in calories, and I want to eat exactly what I need and no more.
