I checked my cold frames yesterday. Collards look good, cabbages are droopy. The winter rye is coming up.

I got the cold frames up late this year and the tops are not completed. They are covered with tarps. The sides are old windows. This year is only a preliminary experiment.

I am trimming back my perennials, mostly because we get a lot of wind and it protects them. we have had light front, and have pruned the apple and maple tree. Flowering crab and some shrubs still to be done. Houseplants which summer outside have been in for several weeks now.

A friend of mine with a greenhouse grows hops vines, an annual, over her greenhouse each year. The shade from them keeps it from getting too hot but still allows enough light in for any plants she has in there during the summer. In the fall she sells them to people who brew beer. They will come and harvest the vines off of the greenhouse and pay her for them. Sounds like a win/win situation to me.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds located near Mansfield, Mo. has a huge variety of heirloom seeds. Their catalog is a thing of beauty with all the great pictures. It also contains lots of good recipes. My brother and his wife took me there when I visited him last fall. Its not just a seed store but is in a small reproduction of a late 1800's town with lots of heirloom flowers and food growing all around it
Here is a linkk to their home page, you can order a catalog or shop online

Hi I'm Sandra. Much as I would love to be planting, I am at the planning stage of a brand new garden. We did plant potatoes last year but it used to be a field so very ruff and hoeing every day. We had a spectacular crop of weeds. Oddly enough, we had lots of potatoes too.
Right now though, we have about 4ft of snow in the back yard. So maybe I'm at the dreaming stage. I envy you your warmer weather sometimes.

I was hoping to get out today and plant some broccoli, cauliflower and some others in the greenhouse to get them started. But a trip to urgent care yesterday with a bad candy burn on my arm cancelled those plans! Tomorrow is not likely and I'll probably be set back for a few weeks as my arm heals. I do still have some strawberries and sweet potatoes that I put in the greenhouse to overwinter but it's still to early here to put them out.

Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow this morning, though, so we'd better get ready for an early spring!

Just got strawberries today! :) Yum!

I've been spraypainting the outsides of several old and new flower pots too. Lots of fun and satisfaction seeing the results. Much more exciting and different than the boring old terracotta color, especially if the pots have faded in the sun.

While visiting my brother & his wife in Arkansas last October, they took me to the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed store. Know how little room I have for my garden I tried to be good, LOL. I only spend $40 on lots of new things and some onld favorites. Bought some really cool melon seeds to try out. I'll let you know how these work out this summer.

I sure am hoping for more rain this year---last year my veggie bed did not do well, even with watering. Dh said we are definitely going to add some compost this year to this bed. Definitely going to do the tomatoberry plant again---they were tasty. And going back to regular cucumber plants. Saw on one sight corn to plant in containers and I just might try them, too. I still will be doing a lot more flowers----always trying new ones--at least one new one--LOL---more planning to do on other plants.

Last fall I added a small 4x8 raised bed which I will be revising this year. Also putting in a 4x4 bed for the wild blackberry/raspberry bushes I've been collecting from other parts of the yard and get them out of the corner of my flower bed where they have been doing well but even with tying back still manage to "attack" people. I've been working on the hubby to let me put a raised bed along the deck (the one area we get full sun) and make it taller so I can grow root veggies. I'm saving up to add 2 rain barrels.

Yes, I was under medical care last summer and my garden died. I did a little work in fall, but looking forward to more work this spring. :) I've also got compost tumblers on my to-buy-sometime-in-the-future-list. They're way cool.

Will try if things go better for husband but right now things are looking bad for him

Dorothy

If you tell God no because He won't explain the reason He wants you to do something, you are actually hindering His blessing. But when you say yes to Him, all of heaven opens to pour out His goodness and reward your obedience. What matters more than material blessings are the things He is teaching us in our spirit.
