I was hoping to clean out my veggie bed today and rake leaves---but my mom being unable to be alone nixed that----and the sad thing is that my flowers are still thriving--we have yet to have a frost---the rate it is going I will be pulling up blooming flowers when we put out Christmas lights---actually, my fall decor looks a little funny with summer flowers.

Since I am expanding my raised veggie bed for next year, I have built the frame and I am puting a lot of my plants and other garden waste into the frame along with shredded leaves so that it all can compost right there. In the spring I will add some top soil, turn it all in and be ready to go.

Finally cut down the tomato plants and put them on the compost pile along with the last bell pepper plant. We have already harvested the last off of them, ate the peppers and will fry up the last of the green tomatoes that I harvested and hoping the cherry tomatoes I brought in will ripen for the grandchildren b/c they love them so much! So then I went ahead and cleaned out the pots and set them in the sun to dry so I can put them up for use next year! Took some puffin' but I got it done. Tomorrow I have more pots containing plants (flowers) that have given their all. Hoping to get some pansies to pot up! I have seen advertised a "wave pansy"!!! Ever hear of it? I'll plant them if I can find them. If not, I'll get regular pansies. I just love them!!
Later, gardening buddies!!! emoticon emoticon

I have one outdoor plant to bring in---it looks lovely right now---and most of my plants up front are doing lovely due to this hot spell---hoping the cool snap coming for next week will start to end them so that I can plant the pansies. And make me want to go outside!

To help keep weeds down, and kill off many of them, cover the beds with about 1" of newspapers. I wet them as I lay them down so they don't fly away. When you have all the layers you want, cover with a layer of topsoil, or mulch to keep them in place. Come spring, most of the paper has decomposed and can be dug right into the soil, but most of the weeds have not been able to sprout.

So far, the only thing that I have gotten done was to bring all of my houseplants back into the greenhouse. I still have the hanging baskets and the bigger plants to bring in. I will get this done before Sunday, since it sounds like it is going to get fairly cold by then. I am waiting for the plants to finish blooming for the season, and then I will do major cleanup. Lots of work.

Never thought about putting plastic there to keep the weeds down for the winter---might have to do that with the veggie bed.
It has turned to weather just like summer here and no way can I do much outside in it---hard to breathe out there and I don't have breathing issues. Still need to put the pansies in the ground but that will wait til the weekend now when it is supposed to get cooler again.

I let my garden planters and most of my floral planters sit fallow this year. The weather was too hot emoticon and I was just too busy to grow / tend anything.

Had planned to clean up and prep for Fall planting but that window is closing. . .it's still in the low 100's here emoticon - way too hot to be bent over planters turning dirt and repairing water lines!

If it ever cools down a bit, I will be planting a winter grass and cleaning out the garden planters. The plan:
1. Cover with plastc to 'scorch' any weeds
2. Remove & sift dirt to clear roots, hard dirt clogs, etc.
3. Amend soil as I return it to the garden planters
4. Refresh and re-arrange water lines

I think that should occupy my winter right up to time for spring planting. emoticon

So, my onions never bulbed......again, and my watermelon would have really liked more sun. Didn't do anything but make a weak little vine. That's all. Lots of garden work to do, huh? hehe
Flowers are powering down, but still a bit of warm left, so we'll see. I'll play it day by day. Harvested 4 nice green bell peppers on Sunday and DH made "stuffed peppers" with plenty of "porcupine balls" since 4 peppers sure ain't much!! haha!
So there are a few more peppers on the plant, but I don't think they'll get very big and the teeny ones seem to be rotting on the plant! I guess they don't like the cooler nights? Tomatoes are no longer producing, but there are several there (small) and just awaiting them ripening!! Tons of cherry tomatoes ( one plant). Ripening by the handfull!! They are soooo good! The DGDs love them!! Carrots (tops) looking really good. If I could get to them, I'd give one a pull to see if any carrots are actually there! Anyway, I guess I'm not ready to start cleaning up much! But I'm sure it will be coming soon!

I think the heat this summer took a lot of umphh out of us gardeners---just too darn hot and dry---and I can't figure out how we had so many mosquitos when we had so little water---but I think the ones that survived were even more nasty and attacked more because of that.

I have a section of my vegetable garden to clean out since that veggie is done. I may be able to get something else into that one real quick for the fall garden since we have another month or two of warm weather.

Me and hubby need to get rid of weeds and trim overgrown plants in the back yard. I've been wanting to clean it out for a while but with illness and the summer heat I have completely ignored the back yard and front flower beds. I've barely made it into my summer vegetable garden much this summer.

My petunias did horrible this year---and they were wave ones---good thing I did not pay for them and I have already pulled them out of the containers they were in.

So far most things are going strong in my gardens. I think they are making up for the hot dry summer. So I have had very little clean up to be doing, which is a good thing since due to the excessive heat IO did't get alot of the big projects I have started finished yet.

Picked up nine buckets of apples this past weekend. Weeding along the outside of neighbor's fence is done.

Pulled petunias out as they looked raggy, but have been picking heads of the marigolds. My garden still looks pretty good. The elderly neighbor across the street enjoys looking at my garden. Need to keep it up for her.

Winter is coming soon enough. Depressing!

Most of my flowers are still blooming so they will stay in the ground as long as possible---but do want to plant some bulbs and leaves need to be stayed on top of.

I've done a lot of cleaning and trimming. Cut back a bunch of sword ferns, so they'll be fresh and pretty in the Spring. Plan to do a lot more trimming, move some bulbs, clean up lots of leaves, but it's already chilly and I'm having a hard time making myself go outside emoticon It's a little embarrassing, as temp is usually not an issue for me!

Okay, most of us are now in the Autumn season and have lots of leaves falling and beds to clean out so that we are ready for next spring. Some of us will plant bulbs, winter pansies, and mums. Some will be decorating for fun. And those down under are just starting out their gardens for their Spring. Post how you are coming along with these activities here.
