I get frustrated because I seem to have one bite of food that puts me over my range and I gain. I'm now up even more. I workout almost everyday too

I am one year younger than you, now a diabetic and still very overweight. I agree it is not to late to turn it around and I want be down at my real goal weight by my birthday next year. We can both do it. Find one good thing at a time to focus on. It is helping me overcome setbacks. emoticon

Hi and happy belated birthday!

I'm sort of in the same boat - 46 and never heavier, embarrassed and constantly thinking about how big I look in my clothes and what people are thinking of me. It's stressful and depressing and the weight is so much harder to get off but not impossible.

Writing about it definitely can help. Have you tried using the blogging resources?

And remember, baby steps!

I turned 44 last thursday and I've never been heavier.
I've been on SP for a long time but not really using all the resources, but it's time I do something about my health. I'm not really sure how the "community" works, but just writing about it is making me feel better, since I don't really have anyone to talk about all this at home.
I guess I'm a bit depressed since I don't even want to see anyone for embarrassment or maybe fear that they will judge me. I hate how I look, I hate how I feel.
This is my turning point. My next birthday will be a happy, healthy 45!!

Today you are you, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is youer than you!

I DID IT! My daughter wanted to run the route for the 5K she's in tomorrow. So I pulled my bike off the trainer, pumped up the tires, and went for a ride with her! It wasn't a trying ride and I didn't ride hard or fast but it was fun. I love riding my bike and it felt GOOD to ride this evening! emoticon

I GAINED 5 pounds last week. That was not good. That just adds to my frustration with having to lose 40 pounds (according to my doctors) and now adding 5 more on top of it. I've been around 225 pounds for 15 years - losing and gaining 20 pounds now and again. I have to make that loss permanent. That's tough given my current situation (I'd rather not get into details but let's just leave that my episodic depression is made worse by it) but I still need to transcend it.

I don't have much money and my daughter is the first consideration so joining a gym is not feasible, not to mention my summer schedule will be brutal enough without having to schedule a workout. I have a bike and I love to ride it. I bought a bike trainer to ride over winter but honestly, it has not turned out to be a useful purchase. Despite purchasing a front tire block to raise the tire up, the seat still angles downward at an uncomfortable level and I just slide forward and have to keep pushing myself up onto the seat or hang uncomfortably off the back of it a bit and that compresses nerves. There's no seat adjustment that changes that angle much and I've tried. So much for getting my big butt smaller (over 50 inch hips)!!! I considered buying a seat made for larger backsides but that still doesn't solve the downward angle. So I've spent a couple hundred dollars on an item that has done nothing for me all winter. Our weather in Ohio hasn't improved enough yet to move the bike back to the garage to ride it outside on a more regular basis. I'd like to just start riding it for in-town errands (discussed the lack of bike racks with the mayor - just need one in front of city hall) but the lack of bike racks or any place to lock up my bike at my fav grocery store makes that tough. I can't ride my bike to my summer job. That would be nice but it's not feasible with a 25 one-way mile commute.

Riding my bike is my favorite form of exercise. The lousy winter did not allow for it nor do the recent incredibly windy days (although I try but nothing like riding into a 20 -25 mph headwind). I am hoping that the weather will finally find its level and I can start riding again after work, depending on my schedule. I am hoping for the morning schedule even though that means getting up at 4:30am. I've become a morning person - it happens when you become a mom. :) I would eat my "lunch" and go for a ride, even just a short ride in town, a couple of days a week. We'll see how all this works out. Thanks, all! Needed to vent.

Ya I know what you mean. I have the sidewalks around here but they aren't always cleaned up nice and it can be treacherous. I have gotten back into the habit of going to the fitness room after work to hop on the treadmill.

Yup, it is hard here too with peeps in and out but occasionally I do get in 10 min or so. Stairs are always a good option, especially if you can do them for 10 min at a time. . . . . lol
I find I usually have more energy and I am more likely to workout after work, I know I'm weird but I like me that way

Hi Anne,

I do have an office at work but people are often coming in and out, so it makes it hard to do anything cardio related. I'm thinking about bringing resistance bands and 2-lb weights into the office just to work in a little toning while at my desk. I'm sure I'll get a few strange looks, but oh well. lol. I also try to take the stars whenever possible. I figure every little bit helps. ;-)

thanks!
Claire

I was thinking about getting up 20min earlier, and I also try to go up and down the stairs at work more than I need. As soon as got home last night, I got on the elliptical for 25 min before I did anything else (which was hard). Legs are hurting this morning, so I guess that's a good sign. lol. I'll keep at it and see what works best.

Thanks for all the input!

It's hard to get workouts in. Personally I know that if I don't get up and do it in the morning I will make excuses at night. I'm to tired, I had a long day...... I get up at 3:30 everyday just so I can get a workout in because I know after a 13+ hour day I won't do it at night. I don't recommend getting up that early, but maybe a 1/2 hour earlier wouldn't hurt? It helps to get your blood flowing and wake you up to start your day. Everyone is different. You need to see what works best for you.

Can you do anything at work? I try to do (but often don't) 10 min before, during and after work. If you can do a video during a break, they are usually 10 min or more. Or walking during the day. I'm not an early person so I don't usually get up early to do 10 min.

Question… I have a very busy schedule, as do a lot of you I'm sure. I have an office job with a looong commute and often I am just beat by the time I get home. I also get up early (6am). I've managed to drop almost 15lbs in about 9 weeks, but I still have a long way to go. I want to start adding cardio to my routine and want to know... do people find it generally easier to work out in the morning or afternoon? Neither will be easy with my schedule, but I have to make the time if I want to achieve my desired results. Thanks for your input!

That's a hard one, I try to figure out a schedule but it always gets messed up. It gets screwy with the BF trying to occupy all my free time and me trying to get cleaning at my place, my laundry and errands done on my days off plus being so tired on work days that I just sleep away any extra hours.

Great job, I'm very impressed. If you put sweets in front of me, forget it but I can avoid them at the store. I don't really feel cravings but I did notice that I don't let myself get hungry. I tend to eat when I think I should but when necessarily when I should. Does that make sense?

Okay. I have eaten very well today, in fact I have not had any sweets in over 3 weeks and have been eating more fruits, veggies, beans, and nuts. Had an early dinner because we were at my in-laws but now I have that feeling in my stomach that I have always associated with hunger and often satisfied with sugary treats. I think I will just go to be early. What do you do when you get that feeling/craving.

Started off the New Year with 3 hours yard work. Day was very nice. Me and Hubby cleaned up the back yard of all the ice damage yuck. Poor Trees. I raked leaves and twigs till I got blisters on both hands. Yes, wear gloves. We burned the limb pile and leaves. Now when the guy comes to cut the larger limbs with his chainsaw he will be able to see what he needs to do and have a clean place to work. I also fired up the grilled and grilled mushrooms, zukes, onions, peppers and eggplant. The mushrooms were the best. Also grilled small beef steaks and some pork steaks for supper the rest of the week. Ate our black-eyed peas too.
No walking at work today, was 14degrees with 20mile winds. Brrrrr, for Arkansas.

Every day is a GIFT!

I have made wheat bread and you have to add white to it to make it come out right so they probably will figure out a way to make it taste better. If you grow up eating it though I bet it taste just right.

I take a D3 all year round even when I spend time in the sun. I take calcium and the doctor said you need D to absorb calcium so there you go. I take mine at night as I am going to bed. I use to take a prescription that interacted with calcium so I always took my 'other' pills at night and it just stuck with me.

Do you all take Vitamin D in the winter months? I was out for a walk today, with my little grandson all bundled up in his stroller. I was glad we were getting fresh air, but I doubt we got much Vitamin D from the 2" bridges of noses and cheeks we had open to the sun.

I have to remember to pick up some D3 this week.

I too have come to love whole wheat/grains, but I can't for the life of me figure out why wheat pasta is so...so...YUCKY. I don't touch the stuff. lol

No idea what that emoticon I just pasted in is supposed to be but it looks like something getting chucked out the window...which is what I recommend you do with your whole wheat pasta. Problem solved!

who else is struggling so hard to get finally used to whole grain pasta?? I usually are always pro whole grain, i love to eat really dark grainy breads (i hate those white gummy airfilled things ^^), i love whole grain / brown rice, i love to munch on whole grain bars or just a handfull of seeds etc. etc., i always did. But this whole grain pasta is for me like chewing on some treebork *lol* and i can't get any taste at all in it, no matter what i am trying... white pasta is a no no anyway so i feel like i got chopped of from pasta at all and i so love this italian (pasta) kitchen ... what's your magic to get brown pasta down without being almost disgusted by it??

I got my Spark Tracker today ... yeah. Now i will know, what i really walk and burn, with those 3 munchkins it's hard to do a really continue workout, but my day has 16 - 18 hrs constantly on my feet with them and it must count at least a little bit as kind of exercise for me. ;o)

i have discovered that those weight scales do not show accurate readings day to day. i have weighed 7 pounds different in a 4 hour span before.. i bet it wasn't a gain but a miscalibration

you did not hear of me for a bit but i did not give up and now i am back to full 100 %, We just had some really struggling months this year, my husband had a stroke what left everything on me with 3 little ones including taking care for him - believe it, it is a really struggle if you have nobody with you like family or friends etc., and if its even to have someone to watch the little rascals for 10 min while you jump to pick in the pharmacy (no you dress them 40 min, pack them in the car 10 in, 5 min out and another 10 in at the store etc.... ;o) ) With this we just got hit like on a daily base with new struggles like dog in the hospital for days until putting her down, losing my wallet with literally all my ID and card documents, both cars broken down, just fixed broken window on the car and it kept going and going and going and going ... September i was on the edge to throw all towels *lol* ... but we sticked together and slowly the light seems to be getting brighter lately ;o) I was not able to really work on my diet and loose weight but i did hold my last weight in even through all that struggles and i am damn proud of my self. ;o) So here i am back to continue my life long fight. ^^

TREADING i couldn't agree any more with your words. Our life isn't that perfect each day as we would like to, what ever is coming up accept it and do the best you can do out of it.

First, I am re-introducing myself:-) I have been here before, quite a while back, and then gained back the weight and then some. This year I re-committed myself in December and have lost 43 pounds. I am now happy to say I would be thrilled to lose 25-49 more pounds (rather than the 50-99 that I was aimingat a few months ago). But, of course, it is getting slower and harder now that I am not as heavy. But I will keep working at it no matter what.

My advice to people is to take one day at a time. When you have a very busy time at work, realize that you might only be able to do a little less than usual but that is better than not at all. Try to take care of yourself in any way possible and just get back at it as soon as you can. NEVER throw in the towel. I figured that out for myself this year that if I miss a day or two due to work or family commitments, I have to just accept that and get back at it the next day.

short and mid-term goal:
stay consistent and keep losing weight.
long-term goal:
feel better about myself and not have weight be something I think about on a daily basis.

So I have made alot of progress on my new mostly healthy lifestyle. I am making a priority of taking time to exercise and eat right. I thought I was doing really well and then wokr got crazy. I am now at a place where I can let my family know that I need to take care of me, but I haven't figured out how to take care of myself when work ramps up. Last week I don't think I even got to 5K steps anf by the weekend I was so tired I just sat and watched tv.
I have always known I was an emotional eater, but I realized last week that being stressed and tired is really dangerous for me. For two nights I ate potato chips and some salami slices for dinner.
I am not sure how to strike any kind of reasonable balalnce during the really stressful times at work. But I don't want to say that I will just give up.
anybody have any suggestions?

I find that I can have a 5 pound fluctuation just based on what part of my cycle I am in, and how much salt has been in my diet the last few days.

Good morning, all. Is anyone besides me afraid of the scale? I have been doing Spark for about 2 weeks now, the first week I weighed was right after Labor Day (and a several meals of bad choices). The scale showed a gain of 2 lbs and it was a huge shock/disappointment for me. I have been walking/running and for the most part keeping my food choices in check and I have felt great about everything. I want to be encouraged by the numbers on the scale not derailed. Part of me just says to not weigh in and keep doing what I know is right, but the other part just wants quantitative confirmation on results. Help! My weigh in day is Wednesday, and I need some advice.

I am so used to seeing the chat forum at the top of the team pages that I just found this one here at the bottom...I will try to jump in when I am around on the weekends as for now I am out at the farm during the majority of the week to get it cleaned up and repaired and livable for my family. Read my blogs to find out more.

Brightest Blessings!

Gratefulwyo, it is hard sometimes to plan our meals as we get overwhelmed with everything else including our jobs. But I know you've been exercising and walking all this time. The metabolism continues to burn calories so if you've already consumed too many calories try to eat in moderation for the rest of the evening. I don't recommend that you skip any meals though but try to eat reasonably. Every so often I want to 'cheat' as my body craves (more like demands) for certain type of food. I don't deny the food but eat in moderation for the rest of the week.
So, if you overate today, try not to stress over it. Just plan ahead for the rest of the week and exercise as you usually do. At the end of the week, by making wiser choices, you should be fine. Baby steps. Make one or two changes at a time and work on those choices towards healthier goals. Otherwise it gets overwhelming and we get burnt out. My only concern with fast food is it's not just the calories but a lot of sodium. All fast food and restaurants include a lot of sodium than it's necessary. Next time you have the urge to cheat, maybe go to a grocery store as they carry a lot of lunch items.

Today, for the first time, I feel like giving up for the day and just eating everything I want. I decided to get a fast food lunch with my husband and ended up eating over 900 calories. That alone puts me toward the high end of my calorie range for the day. I cannot really get more exercise today as I have to work until 10pm and be back at 8am the next day. I know I cannot just skip dinner and not eat for the rest of the day.
My brain says "It happens, aim to make mostly sensible choices" but my reactive brain says "You always fail just give up."

I wear a BodyMedia armband. It's supposed to be worn 23 hours a day but can't get wet. I put it on after I get out of the shower in the morning and take it off when I'm down for the night. I don't sleep well to begin with so I don't see the point of tracking my sleep. I've gotten so used to wearing the band that I feel naked if I don't have it on.

I totally understand as Fitbit can be very addicting because not only you get the benefits of it counting the steps but also how well you sleep. Well, one of these months (not wks or days..haha) I'll get used to wearing it 24/7. Until then, every time I pick it up, it makes an encouraging and funny remark.

I wear my Fitbit 24/7 at this point with my "foot" hurting I need those steps I take in the middle of the night to "powder my nose" to add to my daily step count. No, seriously (well I was being serious) I do wear my Fitbit 24/7 I'm hooked and love it!

emoticon Thank goodness you found your pedometer. I think everyone wears their Fitbit 24/7 as it's more than just a pedometer. It will also let you record your sleep and let you know how well you're sleeping. I don't encourage it as it's not a requirement of our team. I'm also lazy and only wear it if I actually go for my walks or our hiking trips. Yes, I'm losing on my steps but then I get to workout more. Maybe find a certain spot for your pedometer and keep re-using it until it becomes a habit. Oh, and also select join our '5,000 steps per day' challenge so you can keep pushing yourself. You're really going to get addicted is all I can say.

Your hike sounded great! I lost my pedometer yesterday morning. Bummer. I also didn't do a ton of walking, although I did get in one 2.25 mile walk. Everything else was relatively short. I will estimate my steps with 2,000=1 mile for the next few days.

emoticon Jana! 18k steps is quite a lot. You must had a busy day on Friday. emoticon

I saw on Fitbit that Tulip got her first 10k steps today. emoticon And she beat me today.
It was supposed to be a relaxing weekend and most of it was until evening hubby and I decided to go hiking. I ate kind of spicy foods and couldn't decide if I should take alka-seltzer. Finally decided to go hiking and just walk it off. Walk vs alka-seltzer. Walking/hiking definitely helped a lot. Strenuous going up but finally made it and trying not to laugh as going back down was totally awesome as we joked around. It was fun! Had a nice dinner and finally got home really late. Next thing I knew it's mid-night and not allowed to do anymore steps as on Fitbit you have until 11:59pm to wrap up your steps and resets to zero for the next day. I can't remember but I think the data is stored before you sync about 12 days. I think.
Let's see what Sunday brings. emoticon emoticon

Have lots of fun on your trip, Lucy! And try not to think about us. Haha! I'm also taking off in a couple of hours and enjoy rest of my day and possibly morning. Love long drives, relaxing with friends/family and unwind.Trying to do some steppin' before I take off to make my Fitbit happy so wish me luck.

Have a wonderful day everyone! emoticon emoticon

I could never do a Disney cruise. WAY too much "Happiest place on Earth" for me!!! My husband and kids would love it, but I would go crazy!! I haven't been to Vegas in a long time. I'd like to go again soon.

Only time I've thought about doing a cruise was when I saw the Theme Park Review people on a Disney cruise. I'm not sure whether we'd like it or not.

We always have to fly anyway so I guess we're used to the airport thing now. Our next trip is 10 nights in Vegas for our anniversary in February. We've decided to fly in via San Fran for that because the wait time between flights is way less than LAX.
