Hello! Can you explain the water counting beads? Thanks! Robin

Time passes either way! I choose to look back one day and be happy I took charge of my mouth instead of looking in the mirror and wishing I had!

I was just searching the internet when I came to a great website called www.topsgoodies.org. when I got to the first page I clicked on the very first thing I saw. when I got to where it took me I clicked on where it said contests and games and another one that said program ideas. there is so much on those things it is unbelievable. so if your team wants to check them out I definitely would recommend doing it. emoticon

I did a program on breathing
Many of us are shallow breathers especially if we are older and not very active
Taking five deep breaths before bedtime will give you a better nights sleep
Also breath with you stomach not your upper torso
We all need the good oxygen to have clear thinking
Our chapter also reads articles from the TOPS magazines how many of us get them and really never read the articles????

We have many incentives and our yes-yes this week is eat two fruits a day and no-no is no sampling, although, if I make something that needs to be tasted before I serve it, that is reasonable. I, also, made out my menu yesterday. We enter our weekly menus (food diary) for a drawing. We pay 50 cents if we gain over the week and get a chance to earn through a drawing if we lose. Also, the person that lost the most over the week, gets $3. and the same if they maintain over 6 weeks.

Our discussion was about apples, very informative, and we tasted different kinds of apples. Apples are sweet and some slightly sour, and when they are crisp and juicy, a wonderful snack.

I did the program tonight
It was about water. I was amazed at how many in our chapter do not drink water or liquids. A few said they have their coffee in the morning and that is it.

Water is so important the water program is perfect at this time of year for a program on it.

I also give out water counting beads that I learned how to make at IRD.

Next week I am going to ask if everyone increased their water.

I also struggle with the presenters just reading articles from newspapers and magazines for the program (usually mispronouncing all the technical or medical terms along the way). Instead of finding them motivational and inspiring, they were downright depressing! One of the programs I did to try and break up this pattern was on the merits of humor as a dieting tool. I did some research which I shared with the group and then I had a "diet joke" for each member to read out.

We recently reminded our group that giving out medical advice or opinions is not permitted and are using the TOPS programs provided.

It always baffles me to hear that chapters don't use the Tops programs, or their Choice Is Mine books. There is such a wealth of information there. And the programs are what a meeting should be all about - that's where we learn about nutrition, healthy eating, obstacles, etc etc. Use the tools that TOPS gives us!

I agree that reading aloud does not work, you need to get your members involved to keep their interest and get them motivated. At the least, take turns reading, ask for comments as you go, and let the discussion happen. Our Open Discussion weeks are always the most appreciated and helpful programs. Bring up a question or topic, get everyone talking about it.
Good luck to all, and a Happy New Tops Year with your new officers!

Agree with many of the posts here about the articles from magazines and newspapers
Today we had our area captain come and give program on SUPER FOODS it was very interesting even if he did have to read every word from his notes but he had projector so it was on the wall too and lots of great information about eating a variety of foods
I like the TOPS programs that have interactive activities with the whole group however it does take some printing off of the activity page am fortunate to have an at home printer
Our chapter received five new members from a disbanded chapter and they bought with them a box of programs from several years so we have a lot to chose from now
Am doing the installation of officers next week and excited to combine different programs for a neat installation and honoring of our KOPS

Our meeting is only a 30 minutes long, so it seems like there is little time to do a program once the business part of the meeting is over. I've been going a few months now and I think there has only been 3-4 programs. Most have been the leader reading an article. I agree with others who have said this dislike this. I find it boring to listen to an article being read to me.

None of the groups I've belonged to (I've moved a lot lately) have used the TOPS programs--at least not very often. I'd be interested to see what they are like.

I've only been a member of my group for a couple months. They tend to mix it up. Tomorrow will be my first program :D. I'm not suuuure what I'm doing, I might do a snacking program from the binder, it's all ready, but I'm not thrilled with it. I kind of like the card game idea :O.

I don't like when people read articles, like someone below me, it bores me to tears.. . and err well my phone has facebook and it's sooo hard to resist! :D. I love all the other programs though.

For Christmas, we had a big trivia game, it was soooo much fun. There were challenges and questions. One lady had a tissue box tied around her waste, resting just above her derriere.. filled with bells. She had 1 minute to shake all the bells out :D.

I am the leader and usually do the programs. Now that they are in the TOPS newsletters anytime I bring one in my group is like.. oh i already read that. so they don't really help us. I try to find articles that are informative and helpful and will ask for help if i need it. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. As someone presenting all the programs its hard to get something everyone likes especially when they don't tell you LOL. I just try to be as diverse and interesting as I can.

I am NOT a fan of people bringing in articles and reading them for a program. I find it boring and repetitive. I don't get much out of those programs.

Our group gets tired of the same old contests too, but we just finished one that worked well. We lost over 4 lbs per person over the last 6 weeks, and we had been in a rut for quite a while, gaining more than losing.
We used the Scavenger Hunt from the recent Tops News. In teams we had to do the usual exercise, nutrition etc, but also visit a historic site, try a new type of exercise, and some different things. People really liked it. The winning team got free dues for the month, which was a good motivator too!

Last week I asked each member to bring in a food item that she uses often ,I brought in a digital food scale and we measured out the exact amount of fat, salt, and sugar that was in a serving. It was really eye opening.
I love the card game idea and will use it soon.

My group dosen't care for contest. We do have the challenge food for the week. I'm making an afghan for the BL of the year. Each week the BL of the week picks a color of yarn from my scrap bag and I crochet it into the afghan during the week.

What we just did.. and it motivated us was:
We had 2 jars.. one was filled with marbles and one was empty. Every week if you lost weight you would move a marble over. We have a small group and it took us 5 months but we moved all of the marbles over. For our reward we had a luai! We had a blast! Maybe this would help to motivate you guys. Contest will always motivate! Have a great week!

HELP!!
We only had 7 at our meeting yesterday and all gained except the two KOPS. The acting leader said she needed some help to be held accountable - and had each of us pick a buddy to call and encourage some time this week.

I think we really need a kick start. I had the idea to start something with teams and challenges.(Some of the members watch "The biggest Loser") Does anyone have a program or contest that can get us motivated. Maybe working as a team would help-so we wouldn't let someone else down. I wasn't thinking of challenges for the hugh pounds lost like they do. Maybe team challenges-like trying new recipes or exercising so many days that week and getting extra points for these challenges as well as any weight loss we would have.
Thanks for any ideas someone might have!!

Thanks Pat, thats a good idea.
I had thought of asking them to just open the book at random and read something, and that would lead to discussion, or have them look for something specific, like what a certain exchange is, or an exercise or something.
There's so much good information, but just reading out of it does not get people's attention.

Our leader wants me to use The Choice is Mine for some programs, also. I find it very informative. I sometimes take a sentence or two out of it and send a sparkmail to our group about it. It gets the conversation going.

I am a member of TOPS. I've been going to meetings for about 2 years now and I enjoy them very very much. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The KOPS are very supportive.
The TOPS leader and the members follows the rules very closely and they make them fun to do.

Tip to reduce weight: First turn your head to the right and then turn it to the left. Repeat this exercise every time you are offered something to eat.

Sorry its too late to help you out for last night, but how did it go?
As a leader, I always keep an 'instant program' with me for emergencies like that. Tops.org has links, or your state Tops website, with lots of ideas for programs. Our chapter always likes an Open Discussion night - what are your obstacles/questions/suggestions/recipes etc.

We find we get more out of simple sharing of ideas than a prescribed 'program'.
Hope this helps....

This is a late request but last week my TOPS leader went into the hospitol. The other members are looking to me to be the temp leader and I don't know what to do. Tomorrow is our meeting day and I haven't planned anything. We all just got The Choice is Mine so I think I'll use that, maybe talk over the exchang system.

ive been in two tops chapters and both the programs were done by volunteers. no one had to do one but if we wanted we let the person in charge of keeping up with who did the programs know we wanted to. the one im in now is especially all about tops being a group not just a panal of people sitting in front. so someone diff is always doing a program and it makes it alot more interesting, we are really trying to make our programs fun and interesting, the last tops i went to most programs were very boring lol. i do programs that have visuals or are just different, i hate hearing someone just read something off in a monotone so mine are orginal, i speak from expeirence and do as least statics and scientific findings as i can because everyones heard it so many times already and its so boring. if u look at my album or gallery on here u can see a collage i made and it was about finding things you love and doing things that make u happy and the name of the program was "A Healthy Mentality for a Healthy Life" my point was you have to be mentally happy before u can be physcially happy. im working on a program now called "body Image" about how the way we see ourselves is important, not the way others see us but our selves and about being realistic about how we are gonna look because so many woman compare their selves to models that have been digitally altered. im also working on a program about support and how important it is that we have support in all aspects of life. also on the body image im taking body and face pics of women at different sizes and body shapes and showing them to the ladies so they can see what a huge difference is made when they just wear cloths that fit instead of things that are way too big and then a face shot of how simple things like just brushing your hair and applying some make up can make a huge difference! i cant wait to present it! :)
P.S. i forgot to say that the pictures are all going to be before and afters, ive already done one of my friend Myra who is our co-leader and i took a pic of her in her comfort cloths a black hoodie and black jogging type pants and then a pic of her in capri type pants in a fitting tshirt and she looked 20 pounds lighter at least! then she did her makeup and i took a pic of her before make up and after and she looks so much happier and her and she looks very nice! :)

I promised someone a while ago that I would send details of the card game I made up to use as a program in my chapter once. I cut up sheets of card stock to make a bunch of cards. I used two different colors and had one color for the questions and one for the answers. How many you need depends on how many members in your group. I planned it so that each person started with about 6 cards. Deal out the answer cards so that each person starts with the same number. The first person draws a question card from the stack and reads it aloud. If anyone has the answer card in their hand, they lay it down on the table in front of them. I made up more than one card with the answer to some questions, and some questions have multiple answers, so more than one person may have the answer to some of the questions. Members take turns drawing a question until someone has laid down all their cards. The first person to get rid of all their cards is the winner and should be given a small prize.

Here are the questions I used, and the answers:

An intake of more than 3000 mg per day of this can increase the risk of high blood pressure and kidney problems. Sodium

How many calories are in one fruit exchange? 60 calories

What mineral found in dairy products helps keep our bones healthy? calcium

If you plan to follow the 1200 calorie exchange diet, how many meat exchanges can you have per day? 5 exchanges

Are there more health risks caused by being apple-shaped or pear-shaped? Apple-shaped

One gram of fat provides how many calories? 9 calories

What two things can we do to lose weight? Exercise more or eat less (I put these on two different cards)

How many calories does it take to equal one pound? 3500 calories

How much peanut butter is there in one fat exchange? 2 teaspoons

If I have one English muffins for breakfast, how many starch exchanges have I eaten? 2

If I choose to have white rice as one of my starch exchanges, how much can I have?
1/3 cup

A BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than what is associated with increased health risks? 30

One medium sweet potato is equal to what exchange or exchanges? 2 starch

Ideally, not more than what percent of your daily food intake should be from fat calories? 25%

A tablespoon of regular mayonnaise has about how many calories? 100 calories

The U.S. RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of Vitamin C is 60 mg. How much orange juice would you need to drink to satisfy this requirement? 6 ounces

Which type of exercise helps to strengthen the bones? Resistance exercise

Which type of exercise is designed to benefit the heart and lungs? Aerobic exercise

Yoga is an example of what type of exercise? Flexibility exercise

One cup of 2% milk has how many calories? 120 calories

The average plain bagel from the deli contains how many calories? 500 calories

A 3-oz serving of meat is about the size of what? A deck of cards

A cup of rice, pasta, or potatoes is about the size of what? A tennis ball

An ounce of cheese is about the size of what? A domino

About how many calories are burned by riding a bicycle for 30 minutes? 270 calories

The U.S. RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of calcium is 1000 mg. How many 8-oz glasses of milk would you need to drink to satisfy the requirement? 3 4 glasses

The words glucose, sucrose, and fructose on a food label indicate it contains what type of ingredient? Sugar

The human body derives energy from what nutrients? Carbohydrates, Protein, & Fat (again I put them on separate cards)

What foods are good sources of fiber? Whole-grain breads, cereals, & pasta

This takes a while to put together, but my chapter enjoyed doing it, and I kept the cards for future use. Also, I am an area captain and I did this program on one of my chapter visits and they too enjoyed it. I hope someone can use it, but you might want to make up different questions that I used.

This isn't a program, but this is what we did in my club and it was so well received that I'm doing it again this hyear. I corchet and have lots of bits and peices of left over yarn. Each week the biggest looser picks a ball of yarn from the yarn bag and I add it to an afghan. At the end of the year the afghan is given to the yaer's biggest looser.

I'm doing a program the first week in Feb. for my group. It's on soy foods. Our leader asked me to do it because, as a pescatarian I use a lot of soy in my cooking and there have been a lot of questions in the group about how to cook with it. I'll be talking about tofu (both Japanese and Chinese style), tempeh, edamame, and miso.

I'm really looking forward to it.

I know I'm coming into this conversation late- but I thought I would share 2 programs we've done this year.

We started a scrapbook for each person in our chapter (small chapter- I donated books/materials, found books at Target for 1$) Took pictures, and stamped calendars, and it's for the year 2008. It was a hit!

Last night we did a program on stability balls. Seems no one had used them but me, and everyonehad wondered about it. My husband did demo's while I explained about it. Everyone had a great time trying to figure it out!!

Since our chapter is small, 10 people, about 6-7 showing up, I do most of the programs. But what I like is that we all talk waiting for everyone to show up. It gets the ideas in my head about what would make a great program, and what they are interested in!

I will do that, but I haven't had time to dig it out yet. What do you want to know? I was going to get it out and give you a list of the questions and answers I used. I did this two or three years ago, so I certainly don't remember them all. I'm sure you would want to change some of them.

Another thing that is sometimes fun is word puzzles using words related to nutrition, diet, and exercise. Here is a great website where you can put in your own list of words and tell it the size word search puzzle you want and it creates the puzzle for you.

It takes a while to make up the cards, but once it is done, you can use the game more than once. By the time a few months go by, people don't remember all the answers. I am an area captain and I even used it on a couple of my chapter visits one year.

In our chapter, the leader tends to be the one who does programs most often. I am not currently the leader, but I have been several times in the past, and the leader knows she can always count on me to help out if she needs it. We do use the TOPS programs some, but also a lot of material that comes from other sources. Personally, I don't find the TOPS programs to be interactive enough. The new ones are better than some of the older ones, but in general I don't find them FUN. We try to plan it so that the program and any related discussion takes up about half of the meeting.

I once did a program on portion sizes too, and I chose the bread exchange to focus on because I think it is where many of us have problems (I know I do). I brought in various foods (cooked rice, cooked pasta, cereal, crackers, etc. that I had previously measured) on paper plates and asked the group how many servings each was. In some cases the amount on the plate was three servings, yet almost everyone guessed it was one. It was an eye-opener for many of us.

Another of my favorites is a game I made up called Weight Loss is in the Cards. I made two sets of cards- one with questions relating to exchanges, calories, exercise, etc., and the other set has the answers. For some of the questions, I made more than one card with the answer and for some there is more than one answer. To play the game, all the answer cards are dealt out evenly among the members. If it doesn't come out even, simply leave out the extras. We usually have no more than a dozen or so in attendance so I made about 75 cards so we can each have 6. They should pick up the cards and look at them. I take turns asking each member to draw a card from the stack of question cards. We read the question and if someone thinks they have a card with the answer they call it out. If they are correct, they get to put the card down on the table. Anyone else who has the same card may also lay it down. As mentioned, in some cases there may be more than one answer to the question. The first person to get rid of all their cards is the winner. This is a fun way to learn.

We always have a program after the business meeting, but I don't think we've ever used the TOPS programs. Our leader does all of the programs--usually they are things she has printed off of the internet and they usually comprise a little less than half of our meeting. Lately we've been doing a lot of Tai Chi. I enjoy most of the programs, but because our leader is low-carb some of the things are very contrary to what I have researched. All in all, though, I find just attending the group to be beneficial because knowing I have that weekly weigh-in helps keep me motivated throughout the week. And, the contests are very, very motivating for me.

I am the leader in my chapter. Occasionally I will send around a calendar and ask members to sign up to do a program. I tell them if they are not comfortable presenting the information, put it together and I or one of the other officers will do it for them. I encourage them to go through the program binder and choose one of them. Articles from the paper or a magazine are fine occasionally, but TOPS Headquarters puts a lot of time and effort into those programs and I feel they should be utilized frequently.

The favorite program we have done is the one on fat! One of the girls brought in jars of fat to show how much there is in certain foods that we eat regularly. Or the sugar program is a good one!

We try to rotate, but I often end up doing the program. (I used to be a teacher, so I seem to be able to come up with stuff of the top of my head! lol) The best one we have ever done was one on serving/portion sizes. They were amazed at some of the small amounts of "serving sizes", especially on the not-so-good for you foods. I just brought in my food scale and some measuring cups, and then put the servings in what I would normally eat them out of (cereal bowls worked really well). It was a good program, interactive and really eye-opening.

Any other really good ideas out there?

Karen

Our leader does the programs and we seldom ever use the TOPS programs. She gets articles from magazines and newspapers. It is the main part of our meeting. Sometimes we get off on discussions from something that has been said and I really like that.

The TOPS that I go to does do all those things. I do enjoy them and I do find that it can be very useful in your diet. We each do a program and or the leader or co-leader will do the program. The program could be the main part of the meeting or somebody will bring up a good discussion on dieting or eating and BANG time has gone by rather quickly and the meeting is over. There was a couple of times the group use the TOPS info to provide a program also. I'm actually due up for a program. I back in September acquired a trainer and the ladies would like for me to do a program on things we've been doing and eating not to mention.

TOPS Programs are done by TOPS members.

Do you do programs?
Do you enjoy your groups programs?
Does your group use the programs TOPS provides?
Is the program the main part of your meeting?

Let's chat about it!!
