Does the carb exchange also contain starchy vegs. like potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash?? I like sweet potatoes? Measurments like 1/4 large potato means nothing to me. Sweet potatoes come in so many different sizes. I Iike to know by cups or oz/grams.

I thought I would go through each exchange here.

Carbs
I will list one each week and we can talk about it say how many you had each day.

Starch/Bread Exchange A starch/bread exchange is equal to a 1-oz. slice of bread. Careful—not all slices are equal. A description of serving size or weight is necessary. One starch/bread exchange has 15 gr. Carb. 3 gr. protein, 0 to 1 grams fat, and 80 calories. A 1- oz. serving of bread can be exchanged for any of the following:

1/2 cup cooked cereal, grain, or starchy vegetable
1/3 cup cooked rice or pasta
1 oz bread product, example muffin, bread, bagel ect.
3/4 to 1 oz of most snack foods.

Snack foods such as crackers and foods prepared with added fat such as stuffing or mashed potatoes count as one starch exchange plus one fat exchange.

The starch list includes cereals grains pasta breads crackers, and cooked beans , peas, and lentils. Choose low fat starches when possible.

READ YOUR LABELS.
select whole grains when possible.

Are these exchange cards still available to get? I just joined TOPS last week and didn't see or hear anything about exchange cards. I did buy the book that explains about exchange foods and was given a sheet to write down everything I eat. After reading these posts though I think the exchange cards sound like something that would help me out a lot.

Hi Michelle
The meetings do get hectic sometimes. Pull the leader aside and ask if someone can help you in the next meeting to learn what all is going on. When I was leader I appointed members to be mentors to new members so that they would not be lost in the meeting.
We are all here for you in the meetings and on Sparkpeople.

Wow! Thanks for all the great information. I have joined TOPS and have been going a couple of weeks. The first day I showed up was their christmas party and the next week they did the weigh in/minutes with a bit of business and then we played a christmas bingo. Even though the whole group is wonderfully friendly I was still feeling a bit lost and nervous. Now I feel like I have a small grip on my new journey. Thank you so much for all the efforts! Maybe the group will be business as usual when the holidays pass us.

Yes, the fronts have a colored band and list the total calories for the day. The backs have the nutritional info per serving, sample foods and serving sizes.

I love using the cards. They have really helped get my portions under control!

Hi, I will explain what I have figured out. First you choose how many calories you want to eat each day, 1200, 1500 or 1800. I choose 1500, so I picked all the cards that say 1200 or 1500 on them. If it only says 1800 than I don't use that card.

Each time you eat remove cards from the stack according to the serving size listed on the back. For example, one starch/bread exchange card represents 80 calories of starch (1/3 cup pasta or rice OR 1 slice of bread OR 1/4 large baked potato, etc). When you have no more cards you have reached your calories for the day.

Each group is based on the total grams of carbs, protien and fat for a set number of calories. Now, meat and dairy/milk vary a little in calories per serving because the amount of fat can vary and that affects the total calorie count. If you choose all high fat foods in these groups your calories will be higher.

Note that cheese is in the meat instead of the dairy exchange because cheese has no carbs (like meat) and milk, yogurt, etc have carbs.

There are examples of how many cards you should use for each meal on the website, plus a further explaination of serving sizes and a food listing by group. But the beauty of it is that you can mix the cards up however you want throughout the day, and your entire day is balanced.

Sometimes I have to make some exchanges that are not exactly the right category, but I just make sure the total calorie count is the same. I mean, come on, this is real life. Be prepared to eat a lot of fruits and veggies! Yumm!

I hope some of this helps.

Thank you for this link, I must have missed it when I was checking out the site. My first meeting was last week and they were not expecting anyone new and did not have any materials for us (i joined with my BF step mom) and their explination was very rushed, which left me very confused. I did not go last night as I already had a church dinner to go to with my BF mom. So hopefully when I go next week they will have my materials and explain it to me a little better.

So, I was hoping someone could quickly explain what I am to do with these cards? I am a little confused. Thanks!

~Chrys~

I have been using the cards all week. This is an excellent system! Once I got the hang of things, I found it very easy to understand. It has helped me a LOT with serving sizes. It is much easier than logging everything I eat, and I can use it wherever I am. I know what I am eating is in the proper balance. I have had a little trouble keeping my starch servings down and my fruit and veggie servings up. Most days I had to swap something of equal calories for a card in a different category, but overall I have been able to stick to the system. And at least I know where my total calories were. It has really shown me where my eating habits need change. Excellent! I will try it again this week.

The exchange plan is a balance diet of pre-counted calories....it was the first WW plan many moons ago and it still works.
here is the info for your milk card:

Dairy/Milk card
12g carbs,8g protein, 0-8 g fats
90-150 calories
Milk (90..120..150).....1 cup
soy milk................1 cup
Yogurt, low fat.........6 oz (no sugar added)
Yogurt, regular.........8oz
evaporated whole milk...1/2 cup
Goat's milk.............1 cup
dry milk................1/3 cup powder

You should have 2 milk servings daily...but you see your calorie intake could range from 180--300 calories daily..so measure carefully and choose wisely....I have a glass that I know is 8 oz for milk and a glass that is 4oz for juice...makes life easier..make your cards and have fun.

Great idea...the tops cards had a picture of fruit in front and amounts of fruit on the back...
FRUITS for example
60 calories,15g carbs
list:
apple, small.............1
applesauce...............1/2 cup
banana, small............1 or 1/2 med
berries------------------3/4 cup
cantaloupe...............1 cup cubed
cherries-----------------12
orange,small-------------1
raisins..................2 Tbsp
orange juice.............1/2 cup

By doing your own cards you can put the fruit that you most often eat...this will require you to look up the 60 calorie values of each fruit...but you will only need to do it once and write it on the card...and soon you will know the size servings of your favorite things. I used a old checkbook holder and moved 1 card for every fruit I ate.. if you do 3 fruit cards...you could plan ahead one fruit for breakfast, one for afternoon snack and the last fruit for evening snack.. example used one small frozen banana and 1/2 cup skim milk...1 sweetener and blend with submersible blender stick for a fab milk shake. count as 1 fruit, 1/2 milk exchange.
You really are still counting calories...but you are sure to balance you food intake.

In the spirit of keeping this as simple as possible for myself I think I will make my own cards. I remember the Richard Simmons Card System. Good idea, thanks! I could even type out on the cards the amounts that equal one exchange which is what I'm using the book for now.
Most important I need to keep this easy and quick and to keep my momentum up.
Thanks.

No....I do not think there is a way to track exchanges with SP....But you can go to www.tops.org and print a diary sheet. You would write your food choices and check the boxes for each exchange... Then at the end of the day go to spark and load your food choices in the tracker to see how many calories you have eaten.
I use the SP calorie tracker...keeping in mind I need:
2 dairy servings (90-150 calories)
3 fruits (60 calories)
4 starches (80 calories)
5-6 oz protein (35-100 calories)
at least 2-4 veggies 25 calories (more if I am hungry)
2-3 fat 45 calories
3-4 free foods must be less than 20 calories
All this daily.

TOPS had a "FOOD exchange Card system" that was an insert in a TOPS magazine once. I removed it and had mine laminated. You could use them like the Richard Simmons card system when you ate a bread exchange you moved the bread card to the other side of the folder. So you could see what food choices you have left for the day. I called TOPS headquarters and suggested they make them available to members, but apparently I was not convincing enough or did not get the right person.

Hi, I'm a new member to TOPS but have been using Sparks for over a year (well obviously not been using it enough : )
I understand the exchange system but I'm trying to figure out a way to track exchanges in Sparkpeople like i've been doing with calories. Is there a setting to change to exchanges?

The exchange system is really a simplified way to count your calories while eating a balanced diet. TOPS has always promoted the exchange system.

If you simply counted calories with no thought to the food groups you were eating from, you would not get all of the nutrients that your body requires to be healthy.
..This also happens with the point system at WW. If all you think about is how many points you just ate you may not feel satisfied with your food, and if you are diebetic you blood sugar will run up and down.

The exchange system ask you to eat certain amounts from each food group...you can exchange inside of each group because the servings have been adjusted to be equal in calories. So when you eat a 2" diameter apple you are consuming the same number of calories if you eat a cup of cantaloupe cubes, 2 TBsp of raisins or half of a med (7-1/2")banana.
All about 60 calories and every meal plan calls for at least 3 fruit exchanges daily. You really should try not to think of apple pie as a fruit.

The starch exchange is worth 80 calories. So if you eat a new york bagel that is 310 calories you have not just had a bread....you have eaten almost 4 servings of bread (4x80=320 calories). These plans range from 4-8 servings of bread daily, all depending on which plan you have chosen.

You can go to the meal section of the TOPS books.(Nutrition Monograph (1992), Choice is Mine, Choice is Yours) where you choose a daily calorie intake plan (1200,1500,1800. )You will see how many exchanges of each food group are allowed for the calorie plan needed to lose weight. You should never eat less than 1200 calories daily on a regular basis.

The books also suggest the numbers of each exchange group per meal. Until you are very familiar with the exchange groups you should take your Tops book with you grocery shopping and maybe even out to eat.....you can do it...and before your know it...you will understand the exchange program and even figure out your own little short cuts.

Remember a krispy kreme glaze donut is 200 calories and 12grams of fat. It is not just a starch exchange on you meal planner. Count it as 1 starch(80C) and 2 1/2 (112.5c)exchanges of fat and 1 (10c)free.
and no plan lets you have more than 4 fats a day.

So do not eat krispy kreme donuts if you want to lose
weight...just try to think of them as Krispy-Krack and run for your life......the more you use the system the easier it will get. But remember you must eat from all,the food groups daily.

the exchange system is very easy to understand. it is simply trading one food for another.we have all learned that we can have 5 oz. of protein for example. each ounce of protein is one exchange. so you can have it all at once or break it up during the day but you only get five ounces daily
1/2 cup of cooked vegetables are one exchange so you can either have 2 servings (1/2)cup or 1 full cup for 2 exchanges. www.gov.org/nutrition is an excellent place to learn the system very easily. also you can download lists of foods on the site i hope this will help those who are having trouble with it

Friends with one more weigh in after tomorrow before we leave for SRD I've decided to give the exchanges one more try. I have a little notebook and my purse sized exchange book to try and keep track of everything.

I've been trying to work with the exchange system. I get a bit confused when you have a casserole for a meal. Its tough trying to figure out the exact exchanges. What do you do in this case? (example: tuna casserole, goulash, etc.) Thanks for any info.

I have talked to our leader about the exchange system and see if we can have a program about it or several programs about it.

I think it is worth learning. I am a diabetic and have been trying to get it all going on the exchange system for a while. Stick with it and you will get it all figured out.

I am going to study my book again and see if I can figure it out. I have been counting calories mostly. Our group talks about the exchange system some but I haven't quite "got it" yet.

I have the revised version and just LOVE it and found a software that helps with understanding the exchanges it is called NutriBase. TOPS sells a version on their site but it isn't a new one. Message me if anyone wants the link to try it for 10 days before you buy it. I think the trial is 10 days.

I don't "get" the exchange thing, but I ordered the new Choice is Mine book. I am simply doing calories on here.

I basically follow the exchange diet, but I also count calories using SP. Even after reading The Choice is Yours (the old TOPS book), I didn't really understand the system. Then I tried Nutrisystem (while still going to TOPS, of course) and was surprised to learn that it is basically an exchange diet, with their food. I only stayed on NS for a few months, but it really helped me learn how to eat.

I've done every diet in the book, and learned a bit from each. (Though most of what I've learned is how to CHEAT on each diet.) But the exchange system really shows you what to eat and when to eat it, while still being very flexible.

The new book, "The Choice is Mine", has some great information in it, and I think explains the meal plan a bit better.

I use the Exchange System but I've been a little lax about following it as of late. I have a book the is called The Diabetic Brand Name Food Exchange Handbook that I use to look up my food and the exchanges for them and I also have a book for my purse called The Official Pocket Guide to Diabetic Exchanges. I bought both of these books from Amazon.com and I think they are more helpful that the TOPS book but I have that one also. I got started using the Exchange Plan with the help of a couple of online friends.

Hi Tina,
Does you group have the TOPS books? It is in all of them old and new.
There are also programs that have been sent to your group that explain the exchange system. You could ask to see them. It is your yearly dues that pay for your group to get these materials and it should be available to all.

The exchange program is also the AHA diet and the Diabetic diet. You should be able to find it on line.

Happy hunting!!

I need to learn about the exchange system. Our group does not seem to have info on the exchange system. I guess I will have to order from the main site.
