hi Lori............i use the treadmill all the time........i don't run or walk fast...........my pace is around 2.2/2.6 and having done this for a while now have been able to build up to moving the treadmill up high (uphill ) to the highest level 15.............it have taken 4 yrs to get there........the elliptical has caused myself and many others much grief to my knees so after trying many many varieties of that machine i have given up trying them out.......... the recumbant bike is the best for your knees that is what i started on in physio........ ask the physio to show you and then tell her what bothers your knees when on it....she may be able to shed some light as to why this causes you problems.........sometimes the setting need to be re-adjusted to suit you???? hope this helps....have you tried the pool yet???? the pool by far is the best place for your knees............they will thank you for it...

Does anyone use a treadmill for exercise? I've heard/read mixed reviews - some say it's good low impact exercise (as long as you don't jog/run on it), but my physical therapy said it was too harsh and was better to walk on ground. Seems like the treadmill has more "give" and flexibility than walking on a solid hard surface. My doc said it was OK, and I've been doing it at the gym with no problems or pain. The recumbent bike has actually bothered my knee more, and that's what PT said was best for me. Any thoughts?

Replaced knee is also hurting worse than bad knee. Having back problems when walking so did as friend suggested and put insole in left shoe (bad knee). Helping lots. Apparently when they replaced right knee that leg became longer. I was bow legged on that side and knock kneed on other. Maybe problem will be solved when replace left knee.

Lori..................so sorry this is happening to you.......so funny you should bring this up as i am having a similar problem the other knee is causing some grief these days.... way to go with your workouts and also being able to recognize your limits.....keep on keeping on..............small steps will lead to bigger ones and soon you will be reaching your goals...... hoping your knees start to be more co-operative etc....... you can do this...............believe you can............ and you will......... blessings and hugs..............lita

A little sore from my workout this morning, but doing better overall. Arthro surgery knee from September is doing well and getting stronger, but my "good knee" (which has had surgery as well) is crunching terribly and hurts more if I workout too much. I am happy to be going to the gym 4 times a week, doing bike, treadmill and recumbent elliptical and strength training. I can't believe my good knee is hurting more - this stinks! Instead of looking at how many lbs. I have to lose, I'm focusing on each lb. as 3 lbs. pressure off my knees :)

Well the bottom prosthesis is loose on one side and that part has to be replaced as they cannot just put it back on. I will be having surgery in two weeks and hopefully this will ease the pain. Don't know what caused it to loosen, can be a number of things.

My right knee is getting sore from hopping on it to get around. My left knee is sore from carrying around a cast for my broken foot. I can't put any weight on it for another month. Uggh!

I have to second strength training. Although I've always included strength training as part of my plan, it was usually the first thing to get skipped. I've been lifting weights consistently for two months now and I'm pain free for the first time in over a year. My weight is coming off too.

This weekend saw my knees being pretty stiff but I got on my stationary bike and it has helped in stretching the leg. My knee feels better. We did have some thunderstorms which moved in yesterday and that might have been my knees reacting to the weather.

Two weeks ago when I had my knee flare up, swimming laps really helped get me going again. When I'm in pain, it's a nasty cycle. It hurts to move, but movement helps long term. Swimming helps get out of the cycle of not moving and making the pain worse over time.
So far I've been pain free this week.

could be better..........
“There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.”
When you get to a plateau, think of it as a landing on the stairway to your goal. And maintenance is a lifelong plateau, so a bit of "rehearsal" for maintenance isn't the worst thing in the world

I so hope you are able to get there. It was so much fun. I was very hesitant so many times afraid my ankle and/or knees would give but they didn't. I've been doing ST now 3Xweek and I do get twingy pains in my knees sometimes and also when working out, but it goes away when I'm done. Anytime something hurts I stop. I think my legs are a lot stronger and that has helped takes some of the strain off my knees I think.

Yay! Jennifer! It's great that you were able to trust your knees. I went hiking recently and couldn't trust mine. I missed out on a nice hike and took a skyrail down the mountain instead. Sad that I couldn't hike with the family. I just knew I'd be in pain. Congrats to you. Hopefully I will be there soon, too!

I had to share. We went hiking a lot over the course of 3 days on rugged and very rugged trails. I was afraid my knees would give out or just plain hurt terribly later on and that we be the end of that. They didn't! I was sooooo happy! After years of issues and therapy and learning better how to handle my issues, I'm finally doing things! Pain free! I have been working out consistently now for better than 6 months. I think I have strengthened my legs and knees and this has a lot to do with my success. I'm just so thrilled. I wanted to share. I'm sorry for those that are hurting. It so stinks.
