I have read 2 books on diabetes specifically & have achieved the results both books promised. My hbA1c went from 72 (8.5), down to 36 (5.4) in 3 months, and I lost 12kgs in 5 weeks by combining the low carb approach that both books talk about, with P90X (exercise program). These books are:
1) Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution - Dr. Richard K. Bernstein
2) Atkins Diabetes Revolution: the groundbreaking approach to preventing and controlling type 2 diabetes - Dr. Robert Atkins
The following books were recommended in both these books, so I picked them up as well:
1) Gary Taubes - Good Calories, Bad Calories
2) Dr's Eades - Protein Power
All these books have been very beneficial for me in being able to achieve tight blood sugar control through low carb dieting, supplementation and exercise. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the information! I almost bought Diabetes For Dummies - but I just wasn't sure it had good "stuff" in it.

"The First Year Type 2 Diabetes: The Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" by Gretchen Becker
Diabetes for Dummies
"Dr. Berstein's Diabetic Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars" by Richard K. Berstein

I've read several books on Diabetes. My absolute favorite for thorough information that was actually understandable is "The Canadian Type 2 Diabetes Sourcebook" by Sara Rosenthal. (Available on amazon.com)

DLife.com is a great site and has a good tv program on TV every Sunday evening on CNBC. They always lead with great motivational segment(s), a segment featuring diabetic friendly cooking with Chef Michele and the last segment is usually a humorous approach. Very good stuff I just received a book titled Complete Diabetes Lifestyle by Donna Kay but have not had time to get into it.

This book is not specifically about diabetes, but I wanted to mention it anyway: Master Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels. It's not specifically a "diet" book but contains a plethora of information on eating a healthy diet and how certain foods can negatively impact health. I have read so much on nutrition and diabetes, and I learned a lot from MYM. I highly recommend it and have referenced it many times after reading it. It has changed my way of looking at many foods.

Got a new book on controlling diabetes. It was a Reader's Digest "Special" that my DH ordered for me. It was ok but I would like to have something a little more motivating. Anyone know of literature that can do that - specific to diabetes? Maybe we should write one as a team?

I agree with you about Diabetes Management. There is a lot for you to look at. I have some nice cookbooks and also go to the website for Joslin Hospital - they have a fantastic recipe page and lots of good information.

I have read the small Diabetes for Dummies, subscribe to Diabetic Living Magazine, read one of Prevention's Outsmart Diabetes mags, own half a dozen or more cookbooks for Diabetes; three of which are from Diabetic Living.

I like read a lot of magazine such as Health, Everyday food, Prevention and Weight Watchers. All have a lot of great resources and recipes that are simple and good for you. I also have read all the Biggest Loser books. They are very informational but just keep in mind these people have doctors, trainers, and all other supportive staff 24/7 but some of their tips can really help keep you on track. Hope everyone is doing great with their daily goals!

i live about 10 miles from vanderbilt..i got my tonsils out there when i was seven and i did my internship there as a radiographer what did i love about diabetes for dummies it is a layman's book very understandable and you come away from it knowing what the rules are and asking the right questions for the answers you need..if everyone who has diabetes read it and asked the questions and did the stuff in it we would be a bunch of happier people and in control..i am one of the more fortunate people having the great and wonderful endo i have but then he feels the same way about me because so few people that come through the cliinic work as hard as i do to maintain that blod sugar and the a1c down in the fives..he is always on the other end of the computer for me and i am connected always the lady mary

WOWEETOO, Do you live close to Vanderbilt University? If not, are you living in Tennessee? I live in West Virginia (Almost Heaven!!).
What did you like best about the "Diabetes for Dummies" book? Was it written on the most simple basis where you could understand it or was it the illustrations that worked for you? Let us know your opinion of what worked for you with the book.

I like to keep up on new information on diabetes and recently found one at my local library. The book's title is "A Life of Control" by Dr. Alan Graber. Both he and the two nurse practitioners who co-authored the book, Anne W. Brown and Kathleen Wolff, have been in practice at the Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Center.
The book is based on stories by their patients on different situations, but all of the stories show what we know, in order to live with diabetes successfully, we must keep it "under control" and that is easier said than done. If you are interested in the book, it is published by Vanderbilt University Press (www.VanderbiltUniversityPress.com).
Let us know if you have read anything recently. Sometimes we have to "school" ourselves, and we can always use references to new material, sort of like a book club.
