LOL!!!!!!!!!!! How did I KNOW that you were still subscribed to this thread!?!?!
Green, red and blue? Christmas colors!
Mine I've left natural - don't want to draw attention to them yet. I have used a pearlized white and pearlized pink, though! Whenever I do go with color, I usually go with bronzes or pearls. I actually had to clip my toenails AGAIN this weekend. If only my fingernails would grow as quickly!
I have actually had to use a DREMEL to file down my toenails - those suckers are just as hard as HORSE hooves!!!

Okay, don't know if anyone is still subscribed to this thread or not, but I had to BRAG.
I haven't bitten my nails now in TEN WEEKS!
Granted, they aren't LONG, but DD informed me that us ladies with "pudgy" fingers should box off the tips instead of tapering them, so I've been diligently filing straight across. STILL not to the tips of my fingers, but they would have been if I'd not been filing! LOL
AND, they're starting to "get in the way" of things like typing, opening boxes and cutting veggies! YIKES! I'll have to learn how to do things WITH NAILS!

I HAVE NOT GOT AROUND TO GIVING MYSELF A PEDICURE YET. THINGS ARE SO BUSY WITH THE KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL. I DID PUT SOME VASELINE ON MY FEET TO KEEP THEM SOFT. I PLACED SOCKS ON TO HELP THE OIL PENETRATE INTO THE SKIN. THIS HELP WITH DRY SKIN ON THE FEET.

Yeah, I have a friend who use to get her fingernails and toenails done. Although she had nice nails of her own, she'd get the artificial ones put on to eliminate breakage, and ended up getting a horrible fungal infection. And she ended up with some bad plantar warts on her feet as well! YIKES! And they claimed to 'sterilize' their equipment ... in a microwave?!?!

So, this morning I popped one of the gel vitamin E capsules open and rubbed my cuticles, then after work washed up really good and painted my nails! They aren't very attractive yet because they still don't reach the end of the finger, but HEY! They're getting there! And, I notice, I'm typing differently already! LOL

I never get them done professionally. There is a question of utensil being not cleaned properly. Germs!!! Bad for diabetes. My sister used to do nails and told of how she ran into someone with fungun on her feet. NOT ME!! At any rate she had to stop cause of the fumes with doing the artifical nails stuff. I saw on tv a women who got her feet done and got some kind of rash and ended up dying from infection. I want to accent my beauty but I do not want to die to get it done.

LOL Do2Heal! I agree though! It's one thing doing your own and QUITE another doing someone elses!!! I don't like going for pedicures because they always seem to cut my nails too low and into the quick!
I don't do designs, but today I did buy my first nail polish to put on the morning - my 'reward' for not biting them for a month! I got that pearlized pink color. ooooooh! Subtle, as the nails not only aren't long enough to do bright, but I don't really care for bright colors.

It's been 15 days since I quit gnawing my fingers to the bone - and the nails are JUST starting to show a bit of white under the tips. My thumbs are the longest! Although my nails still aren't to the ends of the fingers, they're looking SO much better/healthier.
I think I'll do a vitamin E rub on the cuticles tonight.

That was an easy challenge for me as I get my nails done every other week and I try treat myself to a pedicure once a month. I'm past due on the pedi, but my nails are always done. Since I play a lot of sports (volleyball especially) I have to keep them nice or they'll get broken.

Well, with just SOME conscious effort now, I'm NOT BITING MY NAILS! I caught myself ONE TIME today, the finger just slipping between the lips and NOPE! I pulled back and RESTRAINED myself! YEAH!
I'm not 'into' those claws, just nice nails to the ends of the fingers. I don't want some bright 'ho polish' as my DD calls it - maybe just clear or pearl.
But last night I used cocoa butter on my hands as I felt they were SO dry - and besides, it smells GOOOOD! :)
Oh, did myself a quickie pedi this morning as well. I'm gonna have to cut those bad-boys back a little very soon!

Oh my - is it really - Saturday? Fred's son and daughter in law left yesterday. His daughter and her son are still here - as is he. And surprise - my oldest sister popped in on her way back home to Michigan from Arkansas! I realized this morning I still had that horrible polish on. So while DH had his tea and cereal I got to it. I laughed to think how busy this week has been and yet I felt I had committed to this so had to do it. Mrs C you are powerful!
Anyway - I have clean toenails right now!
DH leaves today and his kids tomorrow. Then Sis and I will have some time - maybe for a pedicure!!

To God be all glory!

Mary

Hi Darlin - haven't seen you before so WELCOME to the team! And GOOD JOB on taking the time to tend to your hands! SO overworked and neglected!

Wow Linda - sounds nice!

Me, in the meantime, I've really been concentrating on NOT biting these things and found myself PICKING at them yesterday. NOT ACCEPTABLE to replace one bad habit with another. I'm actually seeing some growth already - figure they've GOT to grow fast with as much nibbling I do/did on them! I will have NICE NAILS by Christmas! I WILL! I WILL! I WILL!!!

This is a great challenge! I type all day and hardly ever do anything for my nails except trim and maybe file once in a blue moon. I think I will dust off the manicure set and see about doing something about these nails.

Hmm. This one's interesting.

When I was a kid (maybe 6 years old?), I watched some older girl chew on her nails. For some reason, I decided that would be a GREAT new habit to learn, so I diligently chewed my nails for about 2 weeks. Then I got bored, so I stopped. Never bothered doing it again. :)

I never do more to my nails than just trimming them occasionally, and filing down the rough edges. I type all day, so definitely don't have them really long, but I don't bother with the cuticles or any of that. The nails themselves are fine, so I guess I've never really focused on them.

But a manicure would be nice, and maybe a pedicure. So, okay, you're on. I'll let you know on Monday whether I actually did spend a half hour on them and got them all buffed and polished or not.

For the nail-biters: get your significant other to French kiss you every time they catch you biting your nails. :) I know it works - it stopped my ex from chewing his fingers (yes, not just the nails) for a whole 3 or 4 years. The fact that he restarted after that should have told me something was up. :)

Cheers,
Maya

this afternoon I push my cutiles back scrubbed finger nails, and painted them an oplique color. It reflects in light. For my toes I spend two hours on them. So I will do them this weekend. That is one of my rewards. I buy different colors of nail polish. I have my eye on some lime colored polish I want to try out. I need some more base color (clear) I'll get that too.

I stopped biting my nails when I was 16 because I chewed them off so low, they would hurt.
Now I get my nails done every 2 weeks. Tomorrow is the day~

I always forget about my nails, until they are so long that they are slidding on the keyboard or cutting through my socks. My hands get dry, so I am always chasing lotion, but I do not have a lot of nail issues often. However, I have a bad habit that my nails are involved in and that is picking at the skin of my upper lip - just as gross as chewing on them. It gets really bad when I am under high stress, and it is subconsicous so most of the time I don't realize I am doing it until I do something stupid. I actually tore my lip open and made it bleed yesterday.

So I stopped and chopped off all my nails, filed them down, and made sure the cuticals were pushed down off the nail. Then I gave myself a nice lotioned hand/foot rub. Outside of the ongoing battle with dry skin, my nails look fabulous minus a few torn cuticle edges.

Oh and RetracMJ - try vaseline. After you finish up dinner dishes, just use a bit of vaseline on the dried up things (yeah, mine are looking rather peak-id as well!) Not that YOUR'S are dried up - MINE are! And I KNOW I'm getting in enough water!!

I remember THE day I started chewing my nails. I was three years old. My mother was cleaning under the nail (I was always in the dirt ...) and she went JUST a little too far and it began to bleed. Well, hellOooooooooo - if you don't HAVE nails then they can't be cleaned under, RIGHT?!?!
I was also a thumb-sucker, to my mothers dismay!
My parents tried EVERYthing - from telling me I'd get buck-teeth (THAT's a LIE!) to putting what was called "No Bite" all over my thumb and nails.
NOTHING WORKED.
I finally quit sucking my thumb when I got married. I can't put what was said on here as SOMEONE will find it INAPPROPRIATE, but suffice to say that DH said something that kept that OUT of my mouth for (most) of our marriage. YES, I ADMIT IT! I SUCKED MY THUMB when I was pregnant ... LOL
SO, as in every facet of my choices/decisions, I know that I can beat this, but I have to "WANT" it badly enough. I don't believe in crutches - I believe in pure Desire, Determination and Willpower!

SO how'd I do today? Well, pretty good ... until I got in the CAR! As soon as I realized I was nibbling, I stuck my hand under my leg! I caught myself SIX TIMES (with 6 stops I had to make) sticking my fingers in my mouth and STOPPING myself. And, just now reading this thread, so make that 7.
I'm HOPING by next Monday I'll have something other than stubbies on my hands ...

Finally a challenge I can do......and only because I get my nails done every two weeks...LOL. I bite my nails and cuticles something awful. At least until I had acrylic nails put on. I have them done in the french manicure style and they aren't real long 'cause I type all day. My nails are very healthy underneath which is surprising 'cause acrylics tend to soften your nails. So far so good.

Yeah..........

I have to file or clip my nails at least once a week or they snag and tear! I used to bite my nails years ago, and one day I just decided to quit! I think I put fingernail polish remover on my nails for about a week to help me stop...it worked really well! :) Anyway, I'm glad I was able to stop that nasty habit, because now my nails are very healthy and long. :D If you want healthier nails don't get fake nails, don't use fingernail polish, and file them frequently!

When I was a kid if I had a hang nail on my toenails I just pulled it up and bit it off! One of the 4 yo twins does that now!

I noticed yesterday both hands and feet - my nails look awful!

So - tonight or tomorrow I will do something to them to make them look better.
After tomorrow all these kids come in and I will have no time - but I needed this prompt cuz mine look bad!

To God be all glory!

MrsH have you ever tried a clear nail polish or a strengthener? That is how I stopped bitting mine. I have to be careful with what I use because I have a framadyhide allergy that makes my eye swell up if I put my hands anywhere near my face before they are totally dry. But the clear strengtheners work pretty good and allows them to grow back quicker.

OH, I hate seeing those women with those 'claws' - I'm constantly wondering how they use the bathroom!?!?! EW, YUCK and GROSS!
I have had nice nails not too far in the past, about 3 years ago, actually. They weren't 'long', just to the ends of my fingers. But NOW, as they have been most of my life, they are SO mutilated it is NOT funny.
I think that is an issue to work on, a habit to overcome, because like EE it is a form of punishment to my SELF. Hm, so philisophical! But it really is. There are so many ways we hurt ourselves if we can actually focus and see that we are doing it!
I think I will have to commit to NOT biting the nails. That means NO MOVIES because that is when I'm unconsciously chewing away! That is SUCH a conscious effort, too! You've GOT to pay attention.

When I did have the nails, I didn't care for paint, either. I like 'the natural' look.
Oh, I've got some SEXY toenails, though! LOL Although I COULD if I wanted to, I don't think I'll entertain the thought of chewing THOSE. EW, EW, EEWW!!!

Hate to say this but diabetes has caused to me pay special attention to my nails, feet, hands and skin. I don't bite my nails. But since I have a small child and I do a lot of house keeping I do not paint my finger nails it is too much trouble. Besides long nails carry germs. Really gross in the kitchen so I keep them cut short purposely. I do clean them and keep the cutiles pushed back. Cutting the cutiles are not recommended. I do paint and do pedicures on my toes. I love make to designs on my toe nails. I take special care of my nails. I have a great website called toeriffic that has some real nice nail designing. Even has demonstrations, You can also see this on youtube.com.

Okay, I have the bad habit of 'nail biting', and I'll bet there are many others out there with this bad habit as well.

There are variations in the texture or color -- a touch of white here, a rosy tinge there, perhaps some rippling or bumps in the surface. It's important to maintain healthy fingernails. The nails can provide valuable clues about your overall health.

Warning signs for many other conditions, from hepatitis to heart disease, can appear when previously healthy fingernails undergo changes.

Pale, whitish nail beds may indicate a low red blood cell count consistent with anemia.

An iron deficiency can cause the nail bed to be thin and concave and have raised ridges.

Lupus patients get quirky, angular blood vessels in their nail folds.

Psoriasis starts in the nails up to 10% of the time and causes splitting and pitting of the nail bed.

Heart disease can turn the nail beds red.

Thyroid disease can cause abnormalities in the nail beds, producing dry, brittle nails that crack and split easily.

White nails - Liver diseases such as hepatitis

Yellowish, thickened, slow-growing nails - Lung diseases such as emphysema

Yellowish nails with a slight blush at the base - Diabetes

Half-white, half-pink nails - Kidney disease

Pitting or rippling of the nail surface - Psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis

"Clubbing," a painless increase in tissue around the ends of the fingers, or inversion of the nail - Lung diseases

Irregular red lines at the base of the nail fold - Lupus or connective tissue disease

Dark lines beneath the nail - Melanoma

When healthy fingernails begin to change color or texture, one of the most common underlying causes is fingernail fungus, which can cause the nails to crack, peel, and change color and texture.

Here's a good website on how to care for your nails:

The easiest way to 'tend' to the nail bed is during or right after your shower/bath when the tissues are softer. It is easier to gently push back the cuticle and to trim the nail. My mother had a thing about 'pushing back the cuticles' so that we could see 'the moon'.

SO, I challenge you to educate yourself on the NAILS and to take proper care of them THIS WEEK, through the holiday. Report back next Monday - DECEMBER 1st!
