Ran again today - still short of 3 miles, but it was raining. At least I've gotten out there 2 of the past 3 days.

Congrats on getting to week 4. My Sept was so uncoordinated that I likely will start over with OHR when I get back from vacation. But I did get out this morning and run about 30 minutes. Not bad to have not been out in almost 2 weeks.

I am on week 4 of the OHR program. Today called for a mere 29 minutes, but Friday will be 35 minutes. It's already quite cool here, only 45F in the am, but I wear thin gloves.
I look forward to increasing my time with the OHR program. In the meanwhile I noticed when I do other cardio stuff, it doesn't get my HR as up high like before! I don't know if this is good or bad; bad because to burn more calories I have to work harder, but good becuase it shows I'm getting fitter! :-)

I have increased my running to 5.3 miles which takes about an hour. This morning, when I ran, I noticed that I did not struggle. Therefore, I plan to increase my run to 6 miles so I will definitely be running at least one hour. I feel amazing.

OK - I think I'm really a runner now. Last Wed I was nauseous but ran anyway. And noticed that the only time that day I wasn't feeling ill was when I was running.

Then Friday the doctor confirmed I had a bladder infection. The antibiotics worked so well Friday night that I got up and ran on Saturday morning (with a potty break in the middle).

And I was kind of eager to get up this morning and start the week with a run.

Plus - the breathing isn't a struggle the whole time I run so a lot of it was humidity.

Yay - I think I can really call myself a runner now :-)

Yay - I'm glad to hear you didn't have shin issues. I know how it is when some life events get in the way. But we can roll with that and keep moving.

Sidelined with that shin injury last week, and being up till 2am for a U2 concert Sunday, things have not been as consistent as I'd like it to be. Monday was supposed to be a running day but could not get up so early from going to bed at 2 am!!
So today I am redoing week 2, and it went well. No shin problems and did a lot of stretching before and after. I did a lot of shin strengthening exercises last week so hopefully I can roll again!

Welll - I missed my run on Saturday. I was looking forward to it, but my husband and I are riding our bikes in an MS ride in October so we really need to be out there getting in shape for that. I found a ride close to use where he could do the 62 miles and I could do the 31 miles. So, I did a 5k*10!

I needed it, my rear is sore and I need to toughen it up before the ride in October. The good news is I have runs I can enter the next two weekends. I can do the bike on the trainer in the house, maybe watching a movie, so I can get the body used to being on the bike for a few hours at a time.

So much to do, and so little time (and energy).

Did my first ever 7mile run last night - awesome! It was a beautiful evening for running too, sun was shining, what more could you want.
I tried to run on Tuesday could only run 3 miles, was totally whacked from a mad weekend scuba diving in Plymouth :0(.But had another go on Wednesday night and ran the 5 miles need for my programme. Who ever said running was easy?
Have a fab weekend everyone!

Running on the grass is not that fun, u have to keep looking for holes or uneven ground so u won't trip, but like u said, it's still running.
Today my shins did not hurt one bit. I did 45 min on my elliptical and ran around a lot at work w/o any shin problems.
Tomorrow am I plan to run again, I will prob do half and half grass and cement.
That's great u ran in the rain! I agree, walkng is no fun. What I've started doing is, on my running days, I do a hard cardio DVD first for 30 min (Cathe, Turbo Jam, etc) and I'm all hot, sweaty and heart racing by the time I get out there for my run. :0D
Good luck on your 5K on the 12th!

Glad the shins are happy, I've thought about grass or trail running, so it's interesting to hear it made such a difference for you.

And I think any running is better than none, even if it feels slow.

I ran today and it was a very slow time. But I hadn't run since Saturday and it was raining so I get lots of points just for being out there. ;-)
I have learned that running in the rain isn't all that bad (it wasn't a downpour), but walking is no fun at all. Next time I'll warm up on the elliptical and start running out the front door.

I've gotten a terrible shin splint in my right leg, so I had to take yesterday off. Luckily it was a non-running day. It's frustrating b/c I stretch, and I've been running for a while now.

So today was day 2 of week 2, so I ran on the field nearby. I could not run as fast, but my shins were very happy on the grass (not to mention soaked shoes/socks from the dew). I did plenty of stretching afterwards and put ice on my shin on the way to work.

Hi Lovely OHR Buddies!

Sorry about the quietness here for a while! Had lots going on in my life. Today I ran 2.75 miles in 33 minutes. I'm slooo-oooo---owwww, but that's okay! I'm going to keep it up until I get faster. I'm currently trying to do the run 10, walk 30 secs-1 minute method, so my mileage was a bit down compared to what I'd been doing.

I do hope you're all doing fantastic! Congrats on the 6k Laura!

I did it! I ran my 6K. I started near the back so I didn't get passed by too many folks, I just watched the backs of the folks in front of me get farther and farther away. :-)

But hey - they must all be super duper runners (I like that reasoning!) and they've probably been doing this for years. I passed a mother / daughter (probably 17) duo near the end and the daughter was complaining that her feet hurt and she couldn't keep going. Then as I am approaching the finish line she sprints past me ;-)
Guess her feet didn't hurt that much.

It was fun to be on a different course and surrounded by great volunteers encouraging me along. But I look forward to my own route again next week.

On my 3rd day of week one of OHR. It was def easier this am, because I had done 30 min of a turbo jam cardio DVD prior, and was all warmed up.
Good luck on your first 6K this saturday! It will be fun!

Hi there everyone, I haven't posted for a while - holidays and other things got in the way. But through it all I have kept on running! Last night I did a 6 mile run in 1 hour 5 mins, on Tuesday I ran 5 miles in 55mins (fastest 5 miler yet!). Next week I have a 7 miler scheduled.

However, I still get passed by EVERYONE out running....Not once have I overtaken someone. The only thing I can assume is that everyone that runs in my patch is a super dooper runner! emoticon

Yeah - life happens and we can't stress over it. Just work it as best we can.

I haven't done much so far this week, but finally got out for a run this morning. I didn't want Saturday's race to be the first time I had run in a week. It was very slow going compared to my last few times out, but I ran a good distance.

It's certainly cooler here now, which is a good thing.

Hello everyone. I'm taking this week off. Everyone is getting ready to go back to school. Since the gym won't let my 11yr old do much of anything besides sit in the daycare room with the kids, I haven't been going. It's been too late at night to go out running the last couple of days, so I haven't made it. Next week I'll be able to get back to the gym :D Going to try and get some running in this week, but if I don't I'm not going to sweat it :D

It is a different (and harder) run without the music. But congrats on running the entire 30 minutes - that's a great achievement.

And congrats on your first 5K on the 22nd. My first real 5K (it's actually a 6K) is this coming Saturday. I'm looking forward to it.

I began Day 1 of OHR this am. I was tired! I didn't cover as much distance as I wanted to, but I ran all 30 minutes. Not having my iPod really sucked! (battery was dead, oops)
Then I came back and did 15 min of Turbo Jam cardio party remix which was fun.

I got out today, it wasn't a great run, but I did better than I thought so no real complaints.

Got out again today and did 30 minutes (burp and traffic at the school, I could have handled one or the other, but both brought me to a halt). I have devised a different route for next week so I don't get caught up in school traffic.

I'm finally running enough distance that I am struggling to find a route that doesn't take me along a busy road with lots of exhaust. I may stick with the Tues/Thurs/Sat schedule so I can do my longest run on non-school days so I don't hit that traffic.

How exciting GoMomma! And congrats on the progress Vicki.

I am a believer in morning and evening people. I have finally learned to do my yoga in the evening and can whip out a strength training session at any time of the day, but I much prefer to run in the morning.

I put in 38 minutes today and covered 3.5 miles. That's the longest yet! It was also the first day of school so I saw a lot more cars and people out and about. Made it interesting.

Hello everyone :D

I finished wk2d3 today, finally. It was soo hot and humid out it was a tough run. I'm trying to do 10 and 1's. So you run 10min and then walk 1. I had to walk a bit more than I liked. Oh well, it is what it is I guess. At least I did 5.8k and it feels good :D Now to rest it up until Thursday evening.

Hey all! Well I just finished week 7 of spark your way to a 10k. Tuesday was day 1 with 5 miles on the schedule. That run went great! We ran around 7 at night and it was humid but I felt good. No stops and we finished 5 miles in 57 min. Thursday I ran 4 miles. The humidity was thick and I just felt HOT! I finished that run in 46 min. This morning was another 5 mile run. I've decided that I don't like running in the morning so much. I didn't really feel like getting up but forced myself to. I ate a little, drank a little water and off I went. I struggled. I just was not into it mentally at all. I finally called it quits at 4.4 mi with ALOT of walk stops. I was annoyed with myself but at least I got out there. Next up is a 6 mile run which I want to do Tuesday early evening. I hope it's a good one. I need to keep my head "in the game" and focus to get it done. Wish me luck!

Congrats C25k Grad! Wahoooo!!!

Yes, I would suggest starting with week 1. The point of the first three is to work on your distance while still ensuring you can run the whole 30 minutes. Just my two cents, though, do whatever your body is telling you to!

OK guys I'm offically now a C25K graduate, just did my first 5K today in 31 minutes so I am ready to start the OHR program!

Do we start with week 1, even though we are already running 30 minutes?

Woo hoo! Way to go, GoMamma! Can't wait to hear about your experience after your race! That's very exciting! Are you running the whole thing now?

I was supposed to do W3D2 tonight of OHR, but my rear end and thighs are too sore from strength training yesterday! Oops! Guess I pushed it a little bit too hard! I went for a 30 minute walk instead.

I'll probably get to D2 on Monday, as tomorrow is my one rest day of the week and I'ma try to pull my hubby up to the mountains for a hike on Sunday.

Hiya Running Mates!

Just got done with W3D1 today. I ran 2.75 miles (so it seems) in 33 minutes. Apparently the calibration on my Nike+ is off since I got a new clip for the sensor. It didn't tell me when to quit, so I kept running until I finally checked it and stopped at 33 minutes. It also said I ran 2.6 miles, but when I logged it on fitness maps, it said I did 2.75. I trust the fitness maps more than I do the Nike+ right now. Next time I go out I'll have to try re-calibrating it and see if that helps.

Still! 2.75 miles! Wahoo! It feels so awesome to make new accomplishments every time I run (so it seems). I will say, too, that I now know how much I despise the treadmill! Running outside is sooooo much better!

Good job on getting out there. Don't get discouraged Gomamma, just get out when you can.

I looked it up on wikipedia, and a 10 minute mile or better is running, anything slower is jogging. So, I'm still a jogger ;-)

I got out there today and that darn stitch started up again, at minute 5. I pressed on it and it came and went through the run, but at least it didn't come up into the ribcage like Monday so I was able to do 3.2 miles.

Now I'm whipped and could really use a nap ;-)

Hi everyone! Just checking in! Moving along in my second week of OHR and still loving it. It is nice to take my time and see how much distance I can get in rather than upping my time like I was used to with C25K. Hope everyone is enjoying their runs and the heat isn't too bad!

Hello! Just checkin' in with you gals.

Today I did W2D3 of OHR. I did 2.60 miles in 31 minutes (my best so far! woo hoo!) on the treadmill. Once again I upped my speed every time I got to 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25. I ran at 5.6 for a minute when I got to those spots. I hope to keep up with OHR on a more regular schedule this week now that I'm in the second week of school and it's not quite as crazy as the first when students come!

Keep running, running, running!

Oh! BTW! My hubby did day 1 of C25k today! Wahoo! I think I inspired him. emoticon

Gomamma, hope you find the time to get out. It is harder to block out 45 - 60 minutes sometimes. I forced myself to get out on Saturday late afternoon because I wanted Sunday to rest. I had 5 miles on the schedule. I did ok but did not feel as good as when we ran the 4 miles on Thursday. I took a few brief walk stops..breathing was good, but I just felt tired. I finished the 5 though finally after 58 min. That's about 3 minutes slower than the first time I ran 5. I want to run another 5 tonight or tomorrow. First day of school is tomorrow so I don't know which would work better schedule wise. Guess I'll just have to go with the flow......
Happy running...

Ugh, another horrible week for running last week. I got only one day in. Then a series of things interrupted, including my knee bothering me. The kids are nuts this last week too. I need to find something to do with them. It's been raining for three weeks and they are restless and not sleeping, so they are keeping the whole house up. This leads to a house full of cranky people. My husband is home for the next two weeks, so hopefully we can find something. Hoping I'll get to run tonight. I'd go now while the baby is sleeping, but I'm exhausted and need a nap. We'll see, if I'm too restless I'll go, if not, see you when I wake up.

Oh yeah, in response to a question on running so many times per week. I read that for health, only three times a week is really needed. For performance you want to run four to five times a week. I talked to my aunt whose done several runs in the last few years and she says, even in training running three times a week is good enough. Remember your muscles need a rest time in between. If you feel you need to do something on your "rest" days, pick something else. Like swimming, or biking, or weights. Anything to work your other muscles. muscle strengthening and toning actually helps your performance as well. (I've done tons of reading and getting as much information as I can to help myself, just haven't had the opportunity to implement it yet).

It's getting harder to fit it in, but I'm glad we all seem to be finding a way to make it happen.

I didn't get out this weekend, as expected. But I was looking forward to today. I planed another 35 minutes, maybe even hit the 3.2 miles - just like Thursday. Best laid plans, of course.

I had some slight knee and shin pain when I started but I was going slow and let it warm up. Then I got a stitch in my stomach (not the side, right in the middle), it wasn't too bad so I was able to ignore it and keep going. Right at 30 minutes, the stitch moved up to the ribcage and brought me to a screeching halt. I walked it off on the way home. Oh well, I cannot complain about making it "only" 30 minutes! Wednesday is another day.

I was finally able to run again last night. I had not run since Sunday due to travel, getting my kids ready for school/college, etc. So I said I HAVE to get out there! And it was raining pretty good during dinner so I wasn't sure if I would be able to after all. But it finally slowed down long enough and since my husband offered to go along, I didn't mind waiting until almost 8 pm and the prospect of finishing in the dark. We did 4 miles in a light rain in 44 min. I have found that I feel so much better running in the evening than I do when I get up early. I don't know if it's because I've been able to hydrate well during the day as opposed to no water while sleeping or what the deal is, but my breathing and endurance have seemed so much better the last two weeks, despite continued humidity. On deck to do 5 miles tomorrow and I hope I feel as good then as I did last night. That should put me close to the one hour mark!
Keep up all the great running!

Great job ladies! Keep it up! You all are so inspiring!

I ran 2.48 miles tonight in 32 minutes. I should be on W2D2 and only running 30 minutes, but I was feeling great so I kept going. Once again, I think I could have done more, but I don't want to push it and end up injuring myself. For the next week and a half, then, I'll do no more than 32 minutes.

Running this evening made me feel pretty dang good! I was really, really exhausted before I went, but I missed it yesterday and didn't want to miss another day. Afterwards, I walked .65 miles and am now feeling so much better! Who would have thought that I'd ever say that? It's crazy!

Karen - yeah, when it's that hot I figure that's a sure sign I'm not meant to run. I take that gimme. But isn't it great that you really wanted to do it and got out there.

Ziggymc - feel free to track your progress here. Congrats on the 5 miles!!

I ran much better today - at least able to take a deep breath without stopping. I ran a little bit slower, but longer and farther and I'm happy with that. I did 3.2 miles - so I've run my first 5k!!! Not bad for someone who has never been a runner.

I spent the last 1/2 mile scraping off the remains of a spider web I ran through.

Pattie - Since I started my jogging career (oh, you know, 3 months ago) I've only run 2 or 3 times a week, every other day. One week I did run 3 days in a row and I didn't have any problems.

I'm going for a 10K race in October, I ran my first 5k in July at 35mins. Since then I've built up to (just) run 5 miles in 55mins. To be honest I'm pretty impressed with myself, I never thought I could run that far, I keep having to tell everyone about it!
Anyway if its Ok with everyone I'd like to post my progress here, I'm not really following the 1 hour program but a training plan from runnersworld.com. Of which I'm on week 5 of 13.

Friday I'm due to run a long run of 6 miles! Another record if I can do it!

Ugh I didn't get time to run today since I'm busy trying to get my son ready to leave for college and tomorrow we travel, so my every other day thing isn't working this week. I did run 4 miles Sunday in 46 minutes...with just a couple of brief stops. Got to get back at it Thursday!

I was doing so well, then I had a rather blah workout last night. I had to walk twice. I was really discouraged, but I know I need to get back at it. Do any of you run every day, rather than every other day? I'm not sure if trying again tonight may be too much. It's way too hot for me, so I'm running on the treadmill.

Great progress everyone. I missed yesterday so I got out and ran this morning. My speed is good, but I still get so winded. I think it's gotten worse since I started wearing the new bra, so that will change when I run next time.

It's taking longer each morning to get light, too. I am usually done about the time I had to start today.

Keep up the great work everyone, getting out there is over half the battle.

wtg Vicki.. keep up the good work :D

Thanks Diva :D My first instinct is to say no I'm not amazing. Have to remind myself to graciously take a compliment and maybe start believing something positive about myself. We'll work on the second half of that at a later date lol

Today I went to the gym and did W3D1. I am working on my speed as I said. I averaged 6.0 for speed. I was just shy of 3miles in the 30 minutes. Was doing ten and ones. Run 10minutes, walk one minute. It's supposed to help you run better and faster. I have to say the minute walks definitely helped since I upped my speed. I think I'll be keeping it at 6 for a bit. However, if I do, and can run this outside I will run the 10K in an hour which I really want to do.

Hi ladies! After work today I ran 2.55 miles on the treadmill in 31 minutes to complete Week 2, Day 1. Woo hoo! Last time I only ran for 2.37 miles. It's not much, but I still think it's progress. :)

I did some sprints in with my training today. I only run at about 4.9-5.0 and today at every 5 minute mark (5, 10, 15, 20, & 25), I bumped it up to 5.5. I'm still trying!

Good luck this week!

Last night I did w5d3 of spark your way to 10k which was 4 miles. I did it in just over 45 minutes with no walk breaks. And my breathing was really good again. The last two runs I've felt really good despite the heat and humidity which is so great! The fall and cooler temps will only make things better. Plan to run another 4 miles tomorrow.
Keep up the good work girls!

Annekathleen: Thank you. Haha, I'm not sure about ambitious. It's just that I noticed running 3miles now seems like I'm doing nothing. Typically when I'm just getting into the groove and zoning the 5k is done and over with. So, the 10k is definitely a challenge. Weird, because about a month ago the 5k was a challenge lol I want to start working on time though now that I see I can complete 10k. maybe knock off those 8minutes by race time in about 2wks?? we'll see. but it's a good goal and it'll help me through the OHR program :D

I also noticed that I take much longer to get to 3miles on the tread too. maybe we need to up the speed on it. take shorter strides. I know I take shorter strides outside than I do on the tread. I was reading for distance you should shorten your stride anyways.
